In this paper, we provide a generalized version of the Voiculescu theorem for normal operators by showing that, in a von Neumann algebra with separable pre-dual and a faithful normal semifinite tracial weight $τ$, a normal operator is an arbitrarily small $(\max\{\|\cdot\|, \Vert\cdot\Vert_{2}\})$-norm perturbation of a diagonal operator. Furthermore, in a countably decomposable, properly infinite von Neumann algebra with a faithful normal semifinite tracial weight, we prove that each self-adjoint operator can be diagonalized modulo norm ideals satisfying a natural condition.
In the current paper, we generalize the "compact operator" part of the Voiculescu's non-commutative Weyl-von Neumann theorem on approximate equivalence of unital $*$-homomorphisms of an commutative C$^*$ algebra $\mathcal{A}$ into a semifinite von Neumann algebra. A result of D. Hadwin for approximate summands of representations into a finite von Neumann factor $\mathcal{R}$ is also extended.
In this paper we describe the amalgamated free product of finite and semifinite hyperfinite von Neumann algebras over atomic type I subalgebras. To do this we extend the notions of free dimension and standard embeddings used in the related results for finite von Neumann algebras to ones which work better for the semifinite case. We also define classes R3 (of finite von Neumann algebras) and R4 (of semifinite von Neumann algebras) which are closed under such amalgamated free products.
In this paper, we prove a non-commutative version of the Weyl-von Neumann theorem for representations of unital, separable AH algebras into countably decomposable, semifinite, properly infinite, von Neumann factors, where an AH algebra means an approximately homogeneous ${\rm C}^{\ast}$-algebra. We also prove a result for approximate summands of representations of unital, separable AH algebras into finite von Neumann factors.
This paper formulates Young-type inequalities for singular values (or $s$-numbers) and traces in the context of von Neumann algebras. In particular, it shown that if $\t(\cdot)$ is a faithful semifinite normal trace on a semifinite von Neumann algebra $M$ and if $p$ and $q$ are positive real numbers for which $p^{-1}+q^{-1}=1$, then, for all positive operators $a,b\in M$, $\t(|ab|)\le p^{-1}\t(a^p)+ q^{-1}\t(b^q)$, with equality holding (in the cases where $p^{-1}\t(a^p)+ q^{-1}\t(b^q)<\infty$) if and only if $b^q=a^p$.
We introduce a class of unitarily invariant, locally $\|\cdot\|_1$-dominating, mutually continuous norms with repect to $τ$ on a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a faithful, normal, semifinite tracial weight $τ$. We prove a Beurling-Chen-Hadwin-Shen theorem for $H^\infty$-invariant spaces of $L^α(\mathcal{M},τ)$, where $α$ is a unitarily invariant, locally $\|\cdot\|_1$-dominating, mutually continuous norm with respect to $τ$, and $H^\infty$ is an extension of Arveson's noncommutative Hardy space. We use our main result to characterize the $H^\infty$-invariant subspaces of a noncommutati…
In the paper, we prove an analogue of the Kato-Rosenblum theorem in a semifinite von Neumann algebra. Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a countably decomposable, properly infinite, semifinite von Neumann algebra acting on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and let $τ$ be a faithful normal semifinite tracial weight of $\mathcal M$. Suppose that $H$ and $H_1$ are self-adjoint operators affiliated with $\mathcal{M}$. We show that if $H-H_1$ is in $\mathcal{M}\cap L^{1}\left(\mathcal{M},τ\right)$, then the ${norm}$ absolutely continuous parts of $H$ and $H_1$ are unitarily equivalent. This implies that the real par…
In this paper we extend the Pietsch correspondence for ideals of compact operators and traces on them to the semifinite setting. We prove that a shift-monotone space $E(\Z)$ of sequences indexed by $\Z$ defines a Calkin space $E(\cM,τ)$ of $τ$-measurable operators affiliated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra $\cM$ equipped with a faithful normal semifinite trace $τ$. Furthermore, we show that shift-invariant functionals on $E(\Z)$ generate symmetric functionals on $E(\cM,τ)$. In the special case, when the algebra $\cM$ is atomless or atomic with atoms of equal trace, the converse also hold…
In 2008, Blecher and Labuschagne extended Beurling's classical theorem to $H^\infty$-invariant subspaces of $L^p(\mathcal{M},τ)$ for a finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a finite, faithful, normal tracial state $τ$ when $1\le p\le \infty$. In this paper, using Arveson's non-commutative Hardy space $H^\infty$ in relation to a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with a semifinite, faithful, normal tracial weight $τ$, we prove a Beurling-Blecher-Labuschagne theorem for $H^\infty$-invariant spaces of $L^p(\mathcal{M},τ)$ when $0<p\leq\infty$. The proof of the main result relies on proofs …
We studied complex interpolation noncommutative Hardy space associated with semi-finite von Neumann algebra and extend Pisier's interpolation theorem for this case.
We extend Gour et al's characterization of quantum majorization via conditional min-entropy to the context of semifinite von Neumann algebras. Our method relies on a connection between conditional min-entropy and operator space projective tensor norm for injective von Neumann algebras. This approach also connects the tracial Hahn-Banach theorem of Helton, Klep and McCullough to noncommutative vector-valued $L_1$-space.
We present a definition of spectral flow relative to any norm closed ideal J in any von Neumann algebra N. Given a path D(t) of selfadjoint operators in N which are invertible in N/J, the spectral flow produces a class in K_0(J). In the case when N is semifinite, the numerical spectral flow of the path coincides with the value of trace on the associated K-class. Given a semifinite spectral triple (A,H,D) relative to a semifinite von Neumann algebra N, we construct a class [D] in KK^1(A,N') such that, for a unitary u in A, the von Neumann spectral flow between D and u*Du is equal to the Kasparo…
We generalise the even local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra \A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. The proof is a variant of that for the odd case which appears in Part I. To allow for algebras with a non-trivial centre we have to establish a theory of unbounded Fredholm operators in a general semifinite von Neumann algebra and in particular prove a generalised McKean-Singer formula.
In [10], Halmos proved an interesting result that the set of irreducible operators is dense in $\mathcal B(\mathcal H)$ in the sense of Hilbert-Schmidt approximation. In a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$ with separable predual, an operator $a\in \mathcal M$ is said to be {irreducible in} $\mathcal M$ if $W^*(a)$ is an irreducible subfactor of $\mathcal M$, i.e., $W^*(a)'\cap \mathcal M={\mathbb C} \cdot I$. In this paper, let $Φ(\cdot)$ be a $\Vert\cdot\Vert$-dominating, unitarily invariant norm (see Definition 2.1), where by $\Vert\cdot\Vert$ we denote the operator norm. We prove that in eve…
Utilizing the notion of uniform equicontinuity for sequences of functions with the values in the space of measurable operators, we present a non-commutative version of the Banach Principle for $L^\infty$.
Recently Kosaki proved an uncertainty principle for matrices, related to Wigner-Yanase-Dyson information, and asked if a similar inequality could be proved in the von Neumann algebra setting. In this paper we prove such an uncertainty principle in the semifinite case.
We generalise the local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra \A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. In this setting it gives a formula for spectral flow along a path joining an unbounded self adjoint Breuer-Fredholm operator, affiliated to the von Neumann algebra, to a unitarily equivalent operator. Our proof is novel even in the setting of the original theorem and relies on the introduction of a function valued cocycle which is `almost' a (b,B)-cocycle in the cyclic cohomology of \A.
We show that Voiculescu's circular operator and, more generally, each circular free Poisson operator has a continuous family of invariant subspaces relative to the von Neumann algebra it generates. The proof relies on upper triangular random matrix models and consequent realizations of these operators as upper triangular matrices of free random variables.
Assume $\N$ is a von Neumann algebra of type II$_1$ with a tracial state $τ_{\N}$, and $\M$ is the von Neumann algebra of the $n\times n$ matrices over $\N$ with the canonical tracial state $τ_{\M}$. Let $\mathcal D_n$ be the subalgebra of $\M$ consisting of scalar diagonal matrices in $\M$. In this article, we study the properties of semicircular elements in $\M$ that are free from $\mathcal D_n$ with respect to $τ_{\M}$. Then we define a new concept "matricial distance" of two elements in $\M$ and compute the matricial distance between two free semicircular elements in $\M$.
We present some results concerning the relative modular operator in semifinite von Neumann algebras. These results allow one to prove some basic formula for trace, to obtain equivalence between Araki's relative entropy and Umegaki's information as well as to derive some formulae for quasi-entropies, and Rényi's relative entropy known in finite dimension.
We study the index theory for actions of compact Lie groups on C*-algebras with an emphasis on principal actions. Given an invariant semifinite trace on the C*-algebra we obtain semifinite spectral triples. For circle actions we consider the relation to the dual Pimsner-Voiculescu sequence. On the way we show that the notions ``saturated'' and ``principal'' are equivalent for actions by compact Lie groups.
It is known that, for a positive Dunford-Schwartz operator in a noncommutative $L^p$-space, $1\leq p<\infty$, or, more generally, in a noncommutative Orlicz space with order continuous norm, the corresponding ergodic averages converge bilaterally almost uniformly. We show that these averages converge almost uniformly in each noncommutative symmetric space $E$ such that $μ_t(x)\to 0$ as $t\to\infty$ for every $x\in E$, where $μ_t(x)$ is the non-increasing rearrangement of $x$. Noncommutative Dunford-Schwartz-type multiparameter ergodic theorems are studied. A wide range of noncommutative symmet…
We prove some structure results for isometries between noncommutative Lp spaces associated to von Neumann algebras. We find that an isometry T: Lp(M_1) to Lp(M_2) (1 le p < infty, p not 2) can be canonically expressed in a certain simple form whenever M_1 has variants of Watanabe's extension property. Conversely, this form always defines an isometry provided that M_1 is "approximately semifinite" (defined below). Although neither of these properties is fully understood, we show that they are enjoyed by all semifinite algebras and hyperfinite algebras (with no summand of type I_2), plus others.…

We prove that Voiculescu's noncommutative version of the Weyl-von Neumann theorem can be extended to all (not necessarily separable) unital, separably representable C*-algebras whose density character is strictly smaller than $\mathfrak{p}$. We show moreover that Voiculescu's theorem consistently does not generalize to C*-algebras of larger density character.
Let $E=E(0,\infty)$ be a symmetric function space and $E(\mathcal{M},τ)$ be a symmetric operator space associated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra with a faithful normal semifinite trace. Our main result identifies the class of spaces $E$ for which every derivation $δ:\mathcal{A}\to E(\mathcal{M},τ)$ is necessarily inner for each $C^*$-subalgebra $\mathcal{A}$ in the class of all semifinite von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}$ as those with the Levi property.
The main result of this paper is a characterization of properly infinite injective von Neumann algebras and of nuclear C*-algebras by using a uniqueness theorem, based on generalizations of Voiculescu's famous Weyl-von Neumann theorem.
In his study of amenable unitary representations, M. E. B. Bekka asked if there is an analogue for such representations of the remarkable fixed-point property for amenable groups. In this paper, we prove such a fixed-point theorem in the more general context of a $G$-amenable von Neumann algebra $M$, where $G$ is a locally compact group acting on $M$. The Følner conditions of Connes and Bekka are extended to the case where $M$ is semifinite and admits a faithful, semifinite, normal trace which is invariant under the action of $G$.

In this paper we generalize Brown's spectral distribution measure to a large class of unbounded operators affiliated with a finite von Neumann algebra. Moreover, we compute the Brown measure of all unbounded R-diagonal operators in this class. As a particular case, we determine the Brown measure of z=xy^{-1}, where (x,y) is a circular system in the sense of Voiculescu, and we prove that for all positive integers n, z^n is in L^p(M) iff 0<p< 2/(n+1).
Let $\mathcal{M}\subseteq\mathcal{B}\left( \mathcal{H}\right) $ be a countable decomposable properly infinite von Neumann algebra with a faithful normal semifinite tracial weight $τ$ where $\mathcal{B}\left( \mathcal{H}\right) $ is the set of all bounded linear operators on Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}.$ The main purpose of this article is to introduce generalized weak wave operators $\widetilde{W}_{\pm}$, generalized weak abelian wave operators $\widetilde{\mathfrak{U}}_{\pm}$ and generalized stationary wave operators $\mathcal{U}_{\pm}$ in $\mathcal{M}$ and then to explore the relation among $…
We prove the version of interpolation theorem for non-commutative vector-valued fully symmetric spaces associated with fully symmetric Banach function spaces and a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful semifinite normal trace.
In the sequel we establish the Banach Principle for semifinite JW-algebras without direct summand of type I sub 2, which extends the recent results of Chilin and Litvinov on the Banach Principle for semifinite von Neumann algebras to the case of JW-algebras.
In previous work we generalised both the odd and even local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra \A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. Our proofs are novel even in the setting of the original theorem and rely on the introduction of a function valued cocycle (called the resolvent cocycle) which is `almost' a (b,B)-cocycle in the cyclic cohomology of \A. In this paper we show that this resolvent cocycle `almost' represents the Chern character, and assuming analytic continuation properties for zeta functions, we show that the associate…
Random matrices have their roots in multivariate analysis in statistics, and since Wigner's pioneering work in 1955, they have been a very important tool in mathematical physics. In functional analysis, random matrices and random structures have in the last two decades been used to construct Banach spaces with surprising properties. After Voiculescu in 1990--1991 used random matrices to classification problems for von Neumann algebras, they have played a key role in von Neumann algebra theory. In this lecture we will discuss some new applications of random matrices to operator algebra theory, …
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a countable decomposable properly infinite semifinite von Neumann algebra acting on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}.$ An analogue of the Kato-Rosenblum theorem in $\mathcal{M}$ has been proved in [9] by showing the existence of generalized wave operators. It is well-known that there are two typical approaches to show the existence of wave operators in the scattering theory. One is called time-dependent approach and another is called stationary approach. The main purpose of this article is to introduce a stationary approach in $\mathcal{M}$ and then to obtain the Kato-Rosenblu…
In this paper we suggest an approach for constructing an L1-type space for a positive selfadjoint operator affiliated with von Neumann algebra. For such operator we intro- duce a seminorm, and prove that it is a norm if and only if the operator is injective. For this norm we construct an L1 -type space as the complition of the space of hermitian ultraweakly continuous linear functionals on von Neumann algebra, and represent L1- type space as a space of continuous linear functionals on the space of special sesquilinear forms. Also, we prove that L1 -type space is isometrically isomorphic to the…
We extend the noncommutative L1-maximal ergodic inequality for semifinite von Neumann algebras established by Yeadon in 1977 to the framework of noncommutative L1-spaces associated with sigma-finite von Neumann algebras. Since the semifnite case of this result is one of the two essential parts in the proof of noncommutative maximal ergodic inequality for tracial Lp-spaces (1<p<infinity) by Junge-Xu in 2007, we hope our result will be helpful to establish a complete noncommutative maximal ergodic inequality for non-tracial Lp-spaces in the future.
Suppose M is a hyperfinite von Neumann algebra with a tracial state $ϕ$ and $\{a_1,...,a_n\}$ is a set of selfadjoint generators for M. We calculate $δ_0(a_1,...,a_n)$, the modified free entropy dimension of $\{a_1,...,a_n\}$. Moreover we show that $δ_0(a_1,...,a_n)$ depends only on M and $ϕ$. Consequently $δ_0(a_1,...,a_n)$ is independent of the choice of generators for M. In the course of the argument we show that if $\{b_1,...,b_n\}$ is a set of selfadjoint generators for a von Neumann algebra R with a tracial state and $\{b_1,...,b_n\}$ has finite dimensional approximants, then for any $b\…
The notion of the Haagerup approximation property, originally introduced for von Neumann algebras equipped with a faithful normal tracial state, is generalized to arbitrary von Neumann algebras. We discuss two equivalent characterisations, one in terms of the standard form and the other in terms of the approximating maps with respect to a fixed faithful normal semifinite weight. Several stability properties, in particular regarding the crossed product construction are established and certain examples are introduced.
Suppose $N$ is a diffuse, property T von Neumann algebra and X is an arbitrary finite generating set of selfadjoint elements for N. By using rigidity/deformation arguments applied to representations of N in full matrix algebras, we deduce that the microstate spaces of X are asymptotically discrete up to unitary conjugacy. We use this description to show that the free entropy dimension of X, $δ_0(X)$, is less than or equal to 1. It follows that when N embeds into the ultraproduct of the hyperfinite $\mathrm{II}_1$-factor, then $δ_0(X)=1$ and otherwise, $δ_0(X)=-\infinity$. This generalizes the …
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be an atomless semifinite von Neumann algebra (or an atomic von Neumann algebra with all atoms having the same trace) acting on a (not necessarily separable) Hilbert space $H$ equipped with a semifinite faithful normal trace $τ$. Let $E(\mathcal{M},τ) $ be a symmetric operator space affiliated with $ \mathcal{M} $, whose norm is order continuous and is not proportional to the Hilbertian norm $\left\|\cdot\right\|_2$ on $L_2(\mathcal{M},τ)$. We obtain general description of all bounded hermitian operators on $E(\mathcal{M},τ)$. This is the first time that the description of he…
We study 2-cabled analogs of Voiculescu's trace and free Gibbs states on Jones planar algebras. These states are traces on a tower of graded algebras associated to a Jones planar algebra. Among our results is that, with a suitable definition, finiteness of free Fisher information for planar algebra traces implies that the associated tower of von Neumann algebras consists of factors, and that the standard invariant of the associated inclusion is exactly the original planar algebra. We also give conditions that imply that the associated von Neumann algebras are non-$Γ$ non-$L^2$ rigid factors.
We prove that the predual of any von Neumann algebra is $1$-Plichko, i.e., it has a countably $1$-norming Markushevich basis. This answers a question of the third author who proved the same for preduals of semifinite von Neumann algebras. As a corollary we obtain an easier proof of a result of U.~Haagerup that the predual of any von Neumann algebra enjoys the separable complementation property. We further prove that the self-adjoint part of the predual is $1$-Plichko as well.
