The $p$-set, which is in a simple analytic form, is well distributed in unit cubes. The well-known Weil's exponential sum theorem presents an upper bound of the exponential sum over the $p$-set. Based on the result, one shows that the $p$-set performs well in numerical integration, in compressed sensing as well as in UQ. However, $p$-set is somewhat rigid since the cardinality of the $p$-set is a prime $p$ and the set only depends on the prime number $p$. The purpose of this paper is to present generalizations of $p$-sets, say $\mathcal{P}_{d,p}^{{\mathbf a},ε}$, which is more flexible. Particularly, when a prime number $p$ is given, we have many different choices of the new $p$-sets. Under the assumption that Goldbach conjecture holds, for any even number $m$, we present a point set, say ${\mathcal L}_{p,q}$, with cardinality $m-1$ by combining two different new $p$-sets, which overcomes a major bottleneck of the $p$-set. We also present the upper bounds of the exponential sums over $\mathcal{P}_{d,p}^{{\mathbf a},ε}$ and ${\mathcal L}_{p,q}$, which imply these sets have many potential applications.
Considering Ramanujan primes and the symmetric to them so-called Labos primes, we study their parallel properties, we study all primes with these properties (generalized Ramanujan and Labos primes) and construct two kinds of sieves for them. Finally, we give a further natural generalization of these constructions and pose some conjectures and open problems.
We introduce the notion of saturated sets of primes of an algebraic number field and prove an analogue of Riemann's existence theorem for the decomposition groups of infinite stably saturated sets of primes.
In this paper, we study the hybrid problem of Hua's theorem and the Piatetski-Shapiro prime number theorem, and obtain results in this direction of the nonhomogeneous case $k=3$, which deepen the classical result of Hua.
The main result is a generalization of Keller's recursion equation for finding a prime number given the previous primes. We also examine the convergence of the limit in Keller's equation and the convergence of the limit in the general equation. The latter is dependent on the choice of L-function.
We investigate sumset decompositions of quite general sets with restricted prime factors. We manage to handle certain sets, such as the smooth numbers, even though they have little sieve amenability, and conclude that these sets cannot be written as a ternary sumset. This proves a conjecture by Sárközy. We also clean up and sharpen existing results on sumset decompositions of the prime numbers.
We investigate the problem of r almost-primes represented by sets of quadratic forms and give upper bounds for r. Our results extend work of Diamond and Halberstam in which they investigated the corresponding problem for polynomials.
Let $x$ be a positive integer. We give an asymptotic formula for the number of primes in the set $\{\fl{x/n}, 1 \le n \le x\}$ and give some related results.
I present a new property of prime numbers that leads to a generalization of Cramer's conjecture. The study of the gap between consecutive primes is treated as a special case of the gap between consecutive terms of sequences having a certain property called pseudo equidistribution. Both rigorous as well as heuristic arguments are given in support of the generalized Cramer's conjectures.
Let [t] be the integral part of the real number t and let 1 P be the characteristic function of the primes. Denote by $π$ G (x) the number of primes in the floor function set G(x) := {[ x n ] : 1 n x} and by S 1 P (x) the number of primes in the sequence {[ x n ]} n 1. Very recently, Heyman proves
When investigating the distribution of the Euler totient function, one encounters sets of primes P where if p is in P then r is in P for all r|(p-1). While it is easy to construct finite sets of such primes, the only infinite set known is the set of all primes. We translate this problem into the function field setting and construct an infinite such set in F_p[x] whenever p is equivalent to 2 or 5 modulo 9.
We show that if A is a subset of {1, ..., n} such that it has no pairs of elements whose difference is equal to p-1 with p a prime number, then the size of A is O(n(loglog n)^(-clogloglogloglog n)) for some positive constant c.
Suppose P is a set of primes, such that for every p in P, every prime factor of p-1 is also in P. If P does not contain all primes, we apply a new sieve method to show that the counting function of P is O(x^{1-c}) for some c>0, where c depends only on the smallest prime not in P. Our proof makes use of results connected with Artin's primitive root conjecture.
In 1982, Erdös and van Lint showed an estimate for the average of the ratio of the smallest and largest prime divisor of $n$. In this note, we apply C.H. Jia's method to give an estimate for the average of positive integer power of the ratio.
Suppose that P is an infinite set of primes such that P = A + B + C, where A,B,C are sets with at least two elements. We show that if P(x) > c x/log^d x (where P(x) = the number of elements of P that are <= x), and if A,B,C is a "regular" triple of sets, then either |A+B| <= d, or |B+C| <= d, or |A+C| <= d.
A celebrated and deep result of Green and Tao states that the primes contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. In this note I provide a straightforward argument demonstrating that the primes get arbitrarily close to arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. The argument also applies to `large sets' in the sense of Erdős-Turán. The proof is short, completely self-contained, and aims to give a heuristic explanation of why the primes, and other large sets, possess arithmetic structure.
A new and exciting breakthrough due to Maynard establishes that there exist infinitely many pairs of distinct primes $p_1,p_2$ with $|p_1-p_2|\leq 600$ as a consequence of the Bombieri-Vinogradov Theorem. In this paper, we apply his general method to the setting of Chebotarev sets of primes. We study applications of these bounded gaps with an emphasis on ranks of prime quadratic twists of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, congruence properties of the Fourier coefficients of normalized Hecke eigenforms, and representations of primes by binary quadratic forms.
Suppose that A is a subset of {1,...,N} such that the difference between any two elements of A is never one less than a prime. We show that |A| = O(N exp(-c(log N)^{1/4})) for some absolute c>0.
We show that if the difference of two elements of a set $A \subseteq [N]$ is never one less than a prime number, then $|A| = O (N \exp (-c (\log N)^{1/3}))$ for some absolute constant $c>0$.
Let ψ(x) be a polynomial with rational coefficients. Suppose that ψhas the positive leading coefficient and zero constant term. Let A be a set of positive integers with the positive upper density. Then there exist x,y\in A and a prime p such that x-y=ψ(p-1). Furthermore, if P be a set of primes with the positive relative upper density, then there exist x,y\in P and a prime p such that x-y=ψ(p-1).
We generalize results of Alladi, Dawsey, and Sweeting and Woo for Chebotarev densities to general densities of sets of primes. We show that if $K$ is a number field and $S$ is any set of prime ideals with natural density $δ(S)$ within the primes, then \[ -\lim_{X \to \infty}\sum_{\substack{2 \le \operatorname{N}(\mathfrak{a})\le X\\ \mathfrak{a} \in D(K,S)}}\frac{μ(\mathfrak{a})}{\operatorname{N}(\mathfrak{a})} = δ(S), \] where $μ(\mathfrak{a})$ is the generalized Möbius function and $D(K,S)$ is the set of integral ideals $ \mathfrak{a} \subseteq \mathcal{O}_K$ with unique prime divisor of min…
Improving upon earlier results of Freiman and the present authors, we show that if $p$ is a sufficiently large prime and $A$ is a sum-free subset of the group of order $p$, such that $n:=|A|>0.318p$, then $A$ is contained in a dilation of the interval $[n,p-n]\pmod p$.
We define a new class of sets -- stable sets -- of primes in number fields. For example, Chebotarev sets $P_{M/K}(σ)$, with $M/K$ Galois and $σ\in \Gal(M/K)$, are very often stable. These sets have positive (but arbitrary small) Dirichlet density and generalize sets with density 1 in the sense that arithmetic theorems like certain Hasse principles, the Grunwald-Wang theorem, the Riemann's existence theorem, etc. hold for them. Geometrically this allows to give examples of infinite sets $S$ with arbitrary small positive density such that $\Spec \mathcal{O}_{K,S}$ is algebraic $K(π,1)$ (for all …
Let $F_p$ be the field of a prime order $p$. Then for any positive integer $n>1$, for any $ε>0$, and for any subset $A$ of $F_p$, every element of $F_p$ can be represented as a sum of $N$ elements, each of them is a product of $n$ elements from $A$, where $N$ depends on $n$ and $\espilon$.
We show that the number of positive integers $n\leq N$ such that $\mathbb{Z}/(n^2+n+1)\mathbb{Z}$ contains a perfect difference set is asymptotically $N/\log{N}$.
We establish an analog of the Hardy-Ramanujan inequality for counting members of sifted sets with a given number of distinct prime factors. In particular, we establish a bound for the number of shifted primes p+a below x with k distinct prime factors, uniformly for all positive integers k.
Let $f(x_1,\ldots,x_s)$ be a translation invariant indefinite quadratic form of integer coefficients with $s\ge 10$. Let $\mathcal{A}\subseteq \mathcal{P}\cap \{1,2,\ldots,X\}$. Let $X$ be sufficiently large. Subject to a rank condition, we prove that there exist distinct primes $p_1,\ldots,p_s\in \mathcal{A}$ such that $f(p_1,\ldots,p_s)=0$ as soon as $|\mathcal{A}|\ge \frac{X}{\log X} (\log\log X)^{-\frac{1}{80}}.$

Let p be an odd prime number and let S be a finite set of prime numbers congruent to 1 modulo p. We prove that the group G_S(Q)(p) has cohomological dimension 2 if the linking diagram attached to S and p satisfies a certain technical condition, and we show that G_S(Q)(p) is a duality group in these cases. Furthermore, we investigate the decomposition behaviour of primes in the extension Q_S(p)/Q and we relate the cohomology of G_S(Q)(p) to the etale cohomology of the scheme Spec(Z)-S. Finally, we calculate the dualizing module.
Four functions counting the number of subsets of $\{1, 2, ..., n\}$ having particular properties are defined by Nathanson and generalized by many authors. They derive explicit formulas for all four functions. In this paper, we point out that we need to compute only one of them as the others will follow as a consequence. Moreover, our method is simpler and leads to more general results than those in the literature.
In this paper we show that if $A$ is a subset of the primes with positive relative density $δ$, then $A+A$ must have positive upper density $C_1δe^{-C_2(\log(1/δ))^{2/3}(\log\log(1/δ))^{1/3}}$ in $\mathbb{N}$. Our argument applies the techniques developed by Green and Green-Tao used to find arithmetic progressions in the primes, in combination with a result on sums of subsets of the multiplicative subgroup of the integers modulo $M$.
We study tiling and spectral sets in vector spaces over prime fields. The classical Fuglede conjecture in locally compact abelian groups says that a set is spectral if and only if it tiles by translation. This conjecture was disproved by T. Tao in Euclidean spaces of dimensions 5 and higher, using constructions over prime fields (in vector spaces over finite fields of prime order) and lifting them to the Euclidean setting. Over prime fields, when the dimension of the vector space is less than or equal to $2$ it has recently been proven that the Fuglede conjecture holds (see \cite{IMP15}). In t…
The problem of N-digit sets all permutations of which give primes is discussed. Such sets may include only digits 1, 3, 7 and 9, and none of 0, 2, 5, 4, 6, 8. Direct calculations show that such full-permutation digit sets occur at N = 1, 2, 3 and are absent in the 4 - 10 interval of N. On the other hand the formal full permutation at N = 19, 23, 317 and 1031 (as well at N = 2) cases is provided by repunits (integers all digits of which are 1). The existence/nonexistence of other (not repunits) full-permutation digit sets for arbitrary large N is an open question with probable negative answer. …
We consider the problem of determining whether a set of primes, or, more generally, prime ideals in a number field, can be realized as a finite union of residue classes, or of Frobenius conjugacy classes. We give criteria for a set to be realized in this manner, and show that the subset of primes consisting of every other prime cannot be expressed in this way, even if we allow a finite number of exceptions.
Let $\mathcal{P}$ denote the set of all primes. $P_{1},P_{2},P_{3}$ are three subsets of $\mathcal{P}$. Let $\underlineδ(P_{i})$ $(i=1,2,3)$ denote the lower density of $P_{i}$ in $\mathcal{P}$, respectively. It is proved that if $\underlineδ(P_{1})>5/8$, $\underlineδ(P_{2})\geq5/8$, and $\underlineδ(P_{3})\geq5/8$, then for every sufficiently large odd integer n, there exist $p_{i} \in P_{i}$ such that $n=p_{1}+p_{2}+p_{3}$. The condition is the best possible.
Let $P$ and $T$ be disjoint sets of prime numbers with $T$ finite. A simple formula is given for the natural density of the set of square-free numbers which are divisible by all of the primes in $T$ and by none of the primes in $P$. If $P$ is the set of primes congruent to $r$ modulo $m$ (where $m$ and $r$ are relatively prime numbers), then this natural density is shown to be $0$.
Given disjoint subsets $T_1,\ldots,T_m$ of "not too large" primes up to $x$, we establish that for a random integer $n$ drawn from $[1,x]$, the $m$-dimensional vector enumerating the number of prime factors of $n$ from $T_1,\ldots,T_m$ converges to a vector of $m$ independent Poisson random variables. We give a specific rate of convergence using the Kubilius model of prime factors. We also show a universal upper bound of Poisson type when $T_1,\ldots,T_m$ are unrestricted, and apply this to the distribution of the number of prime factors from a set $T$ given that $n$ has $k$ total prime factor…
In [10] the third author of this paper presented two conjectures on the additive decomposability of the sequence of ''smooth'' (or ''friable'') numbers. Elsholtz and Harper [4] proved (by using sieve methods) the second (less demanding) conjecture. The goal of this paper is to extend and sharpen their result in three directions by using a different approach (based on the theory of $S$-unit equations).
The transference principle of Green and Tao enabled various authors to transfer Szemerédi's theorem on long arithmetic progressions in dense sets to various sparse sets of integers, mostly sparse sets of primes. In this paper, we provide a transference principle which applies to general affine-linear configurations of finite complexity. We illustrate the broad applicability of our transference principle with the case of almost twin primes, by which we mean either Chen primes or "bounded gap primes", as well as with the case of primes of the form $x^2+y^2+1$. Thus, we show that in these sets of…
Jacob's ladders, point of contact of the remainder in the prime-number law with the Fermat-Wiles theorem and multiplicative puzzles on some sets of integrals
In part I of this paper we studied additive decomposability of the set $\F_y$ of th $y$-smooth numbers and the multiplicative decomposability of the shifted set $\g_y=\F_y+\{1\}$. In this paper, focusing on the case of 'large' functions $y$, we continue the study of these problems. Further, we also investigate a problem related to the m-decomposability of $k$-term sumsets, for arbitrary $k$.
From varying Egyptian fraction equations we obtain generalizations of primary pseudoperfect numbers and Giuga numbers which we call prime power psuedoperfect numbers and prime power Giuga numbers respectively. We show that a sequence of Amarnath Murthy in the OEIS is a subsequence of the sequence of prime power psuedoperfect numbers. Prime factorization conditions sufficient to imply a number is a prime power pseudoperfect number or a prime power Giuga number are given. The conditions on prime factorizations naturally give rise to a generalization of Fermat primes which we call extended Fermat…
We prove the theorems which are equivalent to the Roland's results such that a new form of them allows to consider some generalizations. In particular, we give generators of primes more than a fixed prime.
Let $A$ be a set in an abelian group $G$. For integers $h,r \geq 1$ the generalized $h$-fold sumset, denoted by $h^{(r)}A$, is the set of sums of $h$ elements of $A$, where each element appears in the sum at most $r$ times. If $G=\mathbb{Z}$ lower bounds for $|h^{(r)}A|$ are known, as well as the structure of the sets of integers for which $|h^{(r)}A|$ is minimal. In this paper we generalize this result by giving a lower bound for $|h^{(r)}A|$ when $G=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ for a prime $p$, and show new proofs for the direct and inverse problems in $\mathbb{Z}$.
In this paper we establish a generalization of Bombieri-Vinogradov theorem for primes represented by a fixed positive definite binary quadratic form. Then we apply this theorem to generalize a result of Vatwani on bounded gap between Gaussian primes.
We prove congruences between cuspidal newforms and Eisenstein series of prime level, which generalize Ramanujan's congruence. Such congruences were recently found by Billerey and Menares, and we refine them by specifying the Atkin-Lehner eigenvalue of the newform involved. We show that similar refinements hold for the level raising congruences between cuspidal newforms of different levels, due to Ribet and Diamond. The proof relies on studying the new subspace and the Eisenstein subspace of the space of period polynomials for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$, and on a version of Ihara's lemma.
In this paper we formulate two generalizations of Agoh's conjecture. We also formulate conjectures involving congruence modulo primes about hyperbolic secant, hyperbolic tangent, Nörlund numbers, as well as about coefficients of expansions in powers of other analytic functions. We formulate a thesis about combinatorial objects that do not produce fake primes.
