We develop a lower bound sieve for primes under the (unlikely) assumption of infinitely many exceptional characters. Compared with the illusory sieve due to Friedlander and Iwaniec which produces asymptotic formulas, we show that less arithmetic information is required to prove non-trivial lower bounds. As an application of our method, assuming the existence of infinitely many exceptional characters we show that there are infinitely many primes of the form $a^2+b^8$.
A classification of twin primes implies special twin primes. When applied to triplets, it yields exceptional prime number triplets. These generalize yielding exceptional prime number multiplets.
We estimate the number of primes represented by a general quadratic polynomial with discriminant $Δ$, assuming that the corresponding real character is exceptional.
New exceptional (i.e. non-repeating) prime number multiplets are given and formulated in terms of arithmetic progressions, along with laws governing them. Accompanying repeating prime number multiplets are pointed out. Prime number multiplets with less regular distances are studied.
We give an account of the arguments that lead from the assumption of the existence of exceptional characters to the asymptotics in related ranges for the counting function of twin primes.
In this paper we construct families of Hilbert modular newforms without exceptional primes. This is achieved by generalizing the notion of good-dihedral primes, introduced by Khare and Wintenberger in their proof of Serre's modularity conjecture, to totally real fields.
We consider the exceptional set in the binary Goldbach problem for sums of two almost twin primes. Our main result is a power-saving bound for the exceptional set in the problem of representing $m=p_1+p_2$ where $p_1+2$ has at most $2$ prime divisors and $p_2+2$ has at most $3$ prime divisors. There are three main ingredients in the proof: a new transference principle like approach for sieves, a combination of the level of distribution estimates of Bombieri--Friedlander--Iwaniec and Maynard with ideas of Drappeau to produce power savings, and a generalisation of the circle method arguments of …
Numerical evidence suggests that for only about $2\%$ of pairs $p,p+2$ of twin primes, $p+2$ has more primitive roots than does $p$. If this occurs, we say that $p$ is exceptional (there are only two exceptional pairs with $5 \leq p \leq 10{,}000$). Assuming the Bateman-Horn conjecture, we prove that at least $0.47\%$ of twin prime pairs are exceptional and at least $65.13\%$ are not exceptional. We also conjecture a precise formula for the proportion of exceptional twin primes.
A result of Dieulefait-Wiese proves the existence of modular eigenforms of weight 2 for which the image of every associated residual Galois representation is as large as possible. We generalize this result to eigenforms of general even weight k $\geq$ 2.
Improving earlier estimates of several authors we show that the number E(X) of Goldbach exceptional even integers (that is, even integers which cannot be written as the sum of two primesw) below X satisfies tho bound E(X) < X^0.72 for sufficiently large X. In the proof crucial role is played by the explicit formula for the contribution of the major arcs proved in Part I of this series (arXiv:1804.05561). In this new version some misprints are corrected and an explanatory sentence is added to the common proof of theorems C and D.
We prove that the existence of exceptional real zeroes of Dirichlet $L$-functions would lead to cancellations in the sum $\sum_{p\leq x} \Kl(1, p)$ of Kloosterman sums over primes, and also to sign changes of $\Kl(1, n)$, where $n$ runs over integers with exactly two prime factors. Our arguments involve a variant of Bombieri's sieve, bounds for twisted sums of Kloosterman sums, and work of Fouvry and Michel on sums of $\left| \Kl(1, n)\right|$.
In this paper we continue our study, begun in part I, of the exceptional set of integers, not restricted by elementary congruence conditions, which cannot be represented as sums of three or four squares of primes. We correct a serious oversight in our first paper, but make further progress on the exponential sums estimates needed, together with an embellishment of the previous sieve technique employed. This leads to an improvement in our bounds for the maximal size of the exceptional sets.
Given an elliptic curve $E$ over a number field $K$, the $\ell$-torsion points $E[\ell]$ of $E$ define a Galois representation $\gal(\bar{K}/K) \to \gl_2(\ff_\ell)$. A famous theorem of Serre states that as long as $E$ has no Complex Multiplication (CM), the map $\gal(\bar{K}/K) \to \gl_2(\ff_\ell)$ is surjective for all but finitely many $\ell$. We say that a prime number $\ell$ is exceptional (relative to the pair $(E,K)$) if this map is not surjective. Here we give a new bound on the largest exceptional prime, as well as on the product of all exceptional primes of $E$. We show in particular…
Let $q$ be an odd prime power and $n$ be a positive integer. Let $\ell\in \mathbb F_{q^n}[x]$ be a $q$-linearised $t$-scattered polynomial of linearized degree $r$. Let $d=\max\{t,r\}$ be an odd prime number. In this paper we show that under these assumptions it follows that $\ell=x$. Our technique involves a Galois theoretical characterization of $t$-scattered polynomials combined with the classification of transitive subgroups of the general linear group over the finite field $\mathbb F_q$.
Let F be a number field, p a prime number. We construct the (multi-variable) p-adic L-function of an automorphic representation of $GL_2(A_F)$ (with certain conditions at places above p and $\infty$), which interpolates the complex L-function at the central critical point. We use this construction to prove that the p-adic L-function of a modular elliptic curve E over F has vanishing order greater or equal to the number of primes above p at which E has split multiplicative reduction, as predicted by the exceptional zero conjecture. This is a generalization of analogous results by Spieß (arXiv:1…
In this paper, we investigate exceptional sets in the Waring-Goldbach problem for unlike powers. For example, estimates are obtained for sufficiently large integers below a parameter subject to the necessary local conditions that do not have a representation as the sum of a square of prime, a cube of prime and a sixth power of prime and a $k$-th power of prime. These results improve the recent result due to Brüdern in the order of magnitude. Furthermore, the method can be also applied to the similar estimates for the exceptional sets for Waring-Goldbach problem for unlike powers.
We give two improved explicit versions of the prime number theorem for primes in arithmetic progression: the first isolating the contribution of the Siegel zero and the second completely explicit, where the improvement is for medium-sized values. This will give an improved explicit Bombieri-Vinogradov like result for non-exceptional moduli.
We give a description of the set of exceptional pairs for a number field $K$, that is the set of pairs $(\ell, j(E))$, where $\ell$ is a prime and $j(E)$ is the $j$-invariant of an elliptic curve $E$ over $K$ which admits an $\ell$-isogeny locally almost everywhere but not globally. We obtain an upper bound for $\ell$ in such pairs in terms of the degree and the discriminant of $K$. Moreover, we prove finiteness results about the number of exceptional pairs.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $K$. We say that a prime number $p$ is exceptional for $(E,K)$ if $E$ admits a $p$-isogeny defined over $K$. The so-called exceptional set of all such prime numbers is finite if and only if $E$ does not have complex multiplication over K. In this paper, we prove that the exceptional set is included in the set of prime divisors of an explicit list of integers (depending on $E$ and $K$), whose infinitely many of them are non-zero. It provides an efficient algorithm for computing it in the finite case. Other less general but rather useful c…
We use the method of quadratic Chabauty on the quotients $X_0^+(N)$ of modular curves $X_0(N)$ by their Fricke involutions to provably compute all the rational points of these curves for prime levels $N$ of genus four, five, and six. We find that the only such curves with exceptional rational points are of levels $137$ and $311$. In particular there are no exceptional rational points on those curves of genus five and six. More precisely, we determine the rational points on the curves $X_0^+(N)$ for $N=137,173,199,251,311,157,181,227,263,163,197,211,223,269,271,359$.
Let $1 < c < 24/19$. We show that the number of integers $n \le N$ that cannot be written as $[p_1^c] + [p_2^c]$ ($p_1$, $p_2$ primes) is $O(N^{1-σ+\varepsilon})$. Here $σ$ is a positive function of $c$ (given explicitly) and $\varepsilon$ is an arbitrary positive number.
We show that the existence of arithmetic progressions with few primes, with a quantitative bound on "few", implies the existence of larger gaps between primes less than x than is currently known unconditionally. In particular, we derive this conclusion if there are certain types of exceptional zeros of Dirichlet L-functions.
Suppose that $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication and with conductor $N$. For each positive integer $m$, the action of the absolute Galois group $G_{\mathbb{Q}}=\operatorname{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ on the torsion points over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ gives rise to a representation of $G_\mathbb{Q}$. A celebrated paper of Serre shows that this representation is surjective for all sufficiently large primes; the other primes are termed \emph{exceptional}. Serre conjectures that there are no exceptional primes $\ell>37$ for any non CM elliptic curv…
Bernoulli-Carlitz numbers were introduced by L. Carlitz in 1935, they are the analogues in positive characteristic of Bernoulli numbers. We prove a conjecture formulated by F. Pellarin and the first author on the non-vanishing modulo a given prime of families of Bernoulli-Carlitz numbers. We then show that the "exceptional zeros" of certain $L$-series are intimately connected to the Bernoulli-Carlitz numbers.
Let $(a, b, c)$ be a primitive Pythagorean triple parameterized as $a=u^2-v^2,\ b=2uv,\ c=u^2+v^2$,\ where $u>v>0$ are co-prime and not of the same parity. In 1956, L. Je{ś}manowicz conjectured that for any positive integer $n$, the Diophantine equation $(an)^x+(bn)^y=(cn)^z$ has only the positive integer solution $(x,y,z)=(2,2,2)$. In this connection we call a positive integer solution $(x,y,z)\ne (2,2,2)$ with $n>1$ exceptional. In 1999 M.-H. Le gave necessary conditions for the existence of exceptional solutions which were refined recently by H. Yang and R.-Q. Fu. In this paper we give a un…
In this note we study the supersingular locus of the GU(2,2) Shimura variety modulo a prime which is unramified in the imaginary quadratic extension. The supersingular locus of this Shimura variety can be related to the basic Rapoport-Zink space whose special fibre is described by the Bruhat-Tits stratification. The description for this supersingular locus in the case where the prime is inert in imaginary quadratic field is already known to Howard and Pappas by exploiting the exceptional isomorphism. Our method is more direct without using the exceptional isomorphism.
Let $ψ$ be a real primitive character modulo $D$. If the $L$-function $L(s,ψ)$ has a real zero close to $s=1$, known as a Landau-Siegel zero, then we say the character $ψ$ is exceptional. Under the hypothesis that such exceptional characters exist, we prove that at least fifty percent of the central values $L(1/2,χ)$ of the Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(s,χ)$ are nonzero, where $χ$ ranges over primitive characters modulo $q$ and $q$ is a large prime of size $D^{O(1)}$. Under the same hypothesis we also show that, for almost all $χ$, the function $L(s,χ)$ has at most a simple zero at $s = 1/2$.
Let $K$ be a number field, $\mathfrak{q}$ be an integral ideal, and $\mathrm{Cl}(\mathfrak{q})$ be the associated ray class group. Suppose $\mathrm{Cl}(\mathfrak{q})$ possesses a real exceptional character $ψ$, possibly principal, with a Siegel zero $β$. For $\mathcal{C} \in \mathrm{Cl}(\mathfrak{q})$ satisfying $ψ(\mathcal{C}) = 1$, we establish an effective $K$-uniform Linnik-type bound with explicit constants for the least norm of a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p} \in \mathcal{C}$. A special case of this result is related to rational primes represented by certain binary quadratic forms.
Let $q\ge 3$ be a non-exceptional modulus $q\ge3$, and let $a$ be a positive integer coprime with $q$. For any $ε>0$, there exists $α>0$ (computable), such that for all $x\ge α(\log q)^2$, the interval $\left[ e^x,e^{x+ε}\right]$ contains a prime $p$ in the arithmetic progression $a \bmod q$. This gives the bound for the least prime in this arithmetic progression: $P(a,q) \le e^{α(\log q)^2}$. For instance for all $q\ge 10^{30}$, $P(a,q) \le e^{4.401(\log q)^2}$. Finally, we apply this result to establish that every integer larger than $e^{71\,000}$ is a sum of seven cubes.
Today, prime numbers attained exceptional situation in the area of numbers theory and cryptography. As we know, the trend for accessing to the largest prime numbers due to using Mersenne theorem, although resulted in vast development of related numbers, however it has reduced the speed of accessing to prime numbers from one to five years. This paper could attain to theorems that are more extended than Mersenne theorem with accelerating the speed of accessing to prime numbers. Since that time, the reason for frequently using Mersenne theorem was that no one could find an efficient formula for a…
We study certain aspects of the Selberg sieve, in particular when sifting by rather thin sets of primes. We derive new results for the lower bound sieve suited especially for this setup and we apply them in particular to give a new sieve-propelled proof of Linnik's theorem on the least prime in an arithmetic progression in the case of the presence of exceptional zeros.
Let $t \in \mathbb{N}$, $η>0$. Suppose that $x$ is a sufficiently large real number and $q$ is a natural number with $q \leq x^{5/12-η}$, $q$ not a multiple of the conductor of the exceptional character $χ^*$ (if it exists). Suppose further that, \[ \max \{p : p | q \} < \exp (\frac{\log x}{C \log \log x}) \; \; {and} \; \; \prod_{p | q} p < x^δ, \] where $C$ and $δ$ are suitable positive constants depending on $t$ and $η$. Let $a \in \mathbb{Z}$, $(a,q)=1$ and \[ \mathcal{A} = \{n \in (x/2, x]: n \equiv a \pmod{q} \} . \] We prove that there are primes $p_1 < p_2 < ... < p_t$ in $\mathcal{A}$…
For each open subgroup $G$ of ${\rm GL}_2(\hat{\mathbb{Z}})$ containing $-I$ with full determinant, let $X_G/\mathbb{Q}$ denote the modular curve that loosely parametrizes elliptic curves whose Galois representation, which arises from the Galois action on its torsion points, has image contained in $G$. Up to conjugacy, we determine a complete list of the $248$ such groups $G$ of prime power level for which $X_G(\mathbb{Q})$ is infinite. For each $G$, we also construct explicit maps from each $X_G$ to the $j$-line. This list consists of $220$ modular curves of genus $0$ and $28$ modular curves …
Let E and E' be two elliptic curves over a number field. We prove that the reductions of E and E' at a finite place p are geometrically isogenous for infinitely many p, and draw consequences for the existence of supersingular primes. This result is an analogue for distributions of Frobenius traces of known results on the density of Noether-Lefschetz loci in Hodge theory. The proof relies on dynamical properties of the Hecke correspondences on the modular curve.
Let $f(z)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} a_f(n)e^{2πi n z}$ be a non-CM holomorphic cupsidal newform of trivial nebentypus and even integral level $k\geq 2$. Deligne's proof of the Weil conjectures shows that $|a_f(p)|\leq 2p^{\frac{k-1}{2}}$ for all primes $p$. We prove for 100% of primes $p$ that $2p^{\frac{k-1}{2}}\frac{\log\log p}{\sqrt{\log p}}<|a_f(p)|<\lfloor 2p^{\frac{k-1}{2}}\rfloor$. Our proof gives an effective upper bound for the size of the exceptional set. The lower bound shows that the Atkin-Serre conjecture is satisfied for 100% of primes, and the upper bound shows that $|a_f(p)|$ is as l…
We establish an explicit bound for the least prime occurring in the Chebotarev density theorem without any restriction. Let $L/K$ be any Galois extension of number fields such that $L\not=\mathbb{Q}$, and let $C$ be a conjugacy class in the Galois group of $L/K$. We show that there exists an unramified prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ such that $σ_{\mathfrak{p}}=C$ and $N \mathfrak{p} \le d_{L}^{B}$ with $B= 310$. This improves the value $B=12\,577$ as proven by Ahn and Kwon. In comparison to previous works on the subject, we modify the weights to detect the least prime, and we use a new version of…
This paper improves the upper bound for the exceptional zeroes of Dirichlet L-functions with even characters. The result is obtained by improving on explicit estimate for $L'(σ;χ)$ for $σ$ close to unity, using a result on the average of Dirichlet characters, and on the lower bound for $L(1;χ)$, with computational aid.
