Implications of inserting a conformal, monodromy line defect in three dimensional O($N$) models are studied. We consider then the WF O($N$) model, and study the two-point Green's function for bulk-local fields found from both the bulk-defect expansion and Feynman diagrams. This yields the anomalous dimensions for bulk- and defect-local primaries as well as one of the OPE coefficients as $ε$-expansions to the first loop order. As a check on our results, we study the $(ϕ^k)^2ϕ^j$ operator both using the bulk-defect expansion as well as the equations of motion.
The computation of the effect of a simple monodromy defect in the case of a sphere with twisted boundary conditions is revisited and streamlined using earlier calculations for a similar system. Compact and explicit expressions are found for arbitrary integer dimensions. Comments on other work are made.
We use analytical bootstrap techniques to study supersymmetric monodromy defects in the critical Wess-Zumino model. In preparation for this result we first study two related systems which are interesting on their own: general monodromy defects (no susy), and the $\varepsilon$--expansion bootstrap for the Wess-Zumino model (no defects). For general monodromy defects, we extend previous work on codimension-two conformal blocks and the Lorentzian inversion formula in order to accommodate parity-odd structures. In the Wess-Zumino model, we bootstrap four-point functions of chiral operators in the …
The effect of a spherical monodromy defect on the entanglement entropy and central charge $C_T$ of a free conformal scalar field propagating on an odd-dimensional sphere is investigated. As on even spheres the central charge becomes negative for a range of the flux parameter, $δ$, with possible implications for reflection positivity. The work is mostly numerical but closed forms are found for the $Z_2$ monodromy ($δ=1/2$) yielding an explicit $d\to\infty$ limit, $C_T\to -6/π$
Explicit polynomial forms for Rényi and entanglement entropies are given on even --dimensional spheres which possess a codimension--2 U(1) monodromy defect. Free scalar and Dirac fields are treated and higher-derivative propagation operators employed. The central charge, $C_T$, is also calculated. Comparison with existing results is made and it is shown how these can be obtained from the values here.
We study co-dimension two monodromy defects in theories of conformally coupled scalars and free Dirac fermions in arbitrary $d$ dimensions. We characterise this family of conformal defects by computing the one-point functions of the stress-tensor and conserved current for Abelian flavour symmetries as well as two-point functions of the displacement operator. In the case of $d=4$, the normalisation of these correlation functions are related to defect Weyl anomaly coefficients, and thus provide crucial information about the defect conformal field theory. We provide explicit checks on the values …
For a free--field flat monodromy defect, a formula for the finite part of the correlator is obtained as a double power series in $(1-x)$ and $(1-\ol x)$ where $x$ and $\ol x$ are lightcone coordinates. It takes the particular form of a series in $(1-x)$ with coefficients finite sums of hypergeometric functions of $1-\ol x$ and is identified with a bulk block expansion. A simple expression for the coefficient of the $(1-x)^n(1-\ol x)^m$ term is thereby found as an explicit function of the flux and dimension. Some typical examples are presented.A transformation allows the bulk block expansion to…
The central charge $C_T$ is computed for scalar and Dirac fields propagating according to GJMS-type kinetic operators acting on odd $d$-dimensional spheres in the presence of a spherical monodromy. The relation of $C_T$ to the derivatives of the free energy on the conically deformed sphere via the Perlmutter factor leads to a numerical quadrature. The variation of $C_T$ with the monodromy flux, $δ$, displays sign changes, exactly as in even dimensions. Closed forms for $C_T$ are derived when $δ$ equals 0 or 1/2 with the derivative order either even or odd and shown to agree with existing, even…
We study monodromy defects in $O(N)$ symmetric scalar field theories in $d$ dimensions. After a Weyl transformation, a monodromy defect may be described by placing the theory on $S^1\times H^{d-1}$, where $H^{d-1}$ is the hyperbolic space, and imposing on the fundamental fields a twisted periodicity condition along $S^1$. In this description, the codimension two defect lies at the boundary of $H^{d-1}$. We first study the general monodromy defect in the free field theory, and then develop the large $N$ expansion of the defect in the interacting theory, focusing for simplicity on the case of $N…
We study a local description of composite five-branes of codimension two. The formulation is constructed by virtue of $SL(2,{\mathbb Z}) \times SL(2,{\mathbb Z)}$ monodromy associated with two-torus. Applying conjugate monodromy transformations to the complex structures of the two-torus, we obtain a field configuration of a defect $(p,q)$ five-brane. This is a composite state of $p$ defect NS5-branes and $q$ exotic $5^2_2$-branes. We also obtain a new example of hyper-Kähler geometry. This is an ALG space, a generalization of an ALF space which asymptotically has a tri-holomorphic two-torus ac…
The effect of a co--dimension--2 spherical monodromy defect on the free--field theory of a conformal scalar is investigated. The conformal anomaly is computed (in two ways) and thence the Rényi and entanglement entropies. The $C_T$ central charge is found to be negative for a range of monodromy flux. The calculations are pursued for any even dimensional sphere. A Possible conflict with existing results is raised.
For a single free scalar field in $d \geq 2$ dimensions, almost all the unitary conformal defects must be `trivial' in the sense that they cannot hold interesting dynamics. The only possible exceptions are monodromy defects in $d \geq 4$ and co-dimension three defects in $d \geq 5$. As an intermediate result we show that the $n$-point correlation functions of a conformal theory with a generalized free spectrum must be those of the generalized free theory.
We use the numerical bootstrap to study conformal line defects with $O(2)$ global symmetry. Our results are very general and capture in particular conformal line defects originating from bulk CFTs with a continuous global symmetry, which can either be preserved or partially broken by the presence of the defect. We begin with an agnostic approach and perform a systematic bootstrap study of correlation functions between two canonical operators on the defect: the displacement and the tilt. We then focus on two interesting theories: a monodromy line defect and a localized magnetic field line defec…
Using a description of defects in solids in terms of three-dimensional gravity, we study the propagation of electrons in the background of disclinations and screw dislocations. We study the situations where there are bound states that are effectively localized on the defect and hence can be described in terms of an effective 1+1 dimensional field theory for the low energy excitations. In the case of screw dislocations, we find that these excitations are chiral and can be described by an effective field theory of chiral fermions. Fermions of both chirality occur even for a given direction of th…
An earlier contour expression for the Green function of a free complex scalar field in the presence of a conical singularity with localised magnetic flux is shown to yield expressions for the field correlator and defect block expansions that have been more recently found in connection with monodromy defects in conformal field theory. The Green function appears as the Picard integral representation of the Appell $F_1$ function. This is shown to transform into a confluent Horn function, corresponding to a different defect block expansion. Other transformations are discussed.
Gravity may be "locally localized" over a wide range of length scales on a d-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) brane living inside AdS_{d+1}. In this paper we examine this phenomenon from the point of view of the holographic dual "defect conformal field theory". The mode expansion of bulk fields on the gravity side is shown to be precisely dual to the "boundary operator product expansion" of operators as they approach the defect. From the field theory point of view, the condition for localization is that a "reduced operator" appearing in this expansion acquires negative anomalous dimension. In …
We study a large class of BPS surface defects in 4d N=2 gauge theories. They are defined by coupling a 2d N=(2,2) gauged linear sigma model to the 4d bulk degrees of freedom. Our main result is an efficient computation of the effective twisted superpotential for all these models in terms of a basic object closely related to the resolvent of the 4d gauge theory, which encodes the curve describing the 4d low energy dynamics. We reproduce and extend the results of brane constructions and compute the effective twisted superpotential for general monodromy surface defects. We encounter novel, puzzli…

We study the influence of topology on the quench dynamics of a system driven across a quantum critical point. We show how the appearance of certain edge states, which fully characterise the topology of the system, dramatically modifies the process of defect production during the crossing of the critical point. Interestingly enough, the density of defects is no longer described by the Kibble-Zurek scaling, but determined instead by the non-universal topological features of the system. Edge states are shown to be robust against defect production, which highlights their topological nature.
For a scalar CFT with a monodromy defect, a `subtracted Green function' is derived in terms of an Appell $F_1$ function. A conjectured relation of Gimenez-Grau and Liendo is thereby proved and extended and shown to hold for generalised free fields. A possible means of determining the bulk block expansion is outlined. Finite coincidence limits are expressed as combinations of Beta functions.
Motivated by questions about quantum information and classification of quantum field theories, we consider Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) in spacetime dimension $d\geq 5$ with a conformally-invariant spatial boundary (BCFTs) or $4$-dimensional conformal defect (DCFTs). We determine the boundary or defect contribution to the Weyl anomaly using the standard algorithm, which includes imposing Wess-Zumino consistency and fixing finite counterterms. These boundary/defect contributions are built from the intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures, as well as the pullback of the ambient CFT's Weyl tensor. F…
We investigate a counterintuitive geometric interaction between defects and curvature in thin layers of superfluids, superconductors and liquid crystals deposited on curved surfaces. Each defect feels a geometric potential whose functional form is determined only by the shape of the surface, but whose sign and strength depend on the transformation properties of the order parameter. For superfluids and superconductors, the strength of this interaction is proportional to the square of the charge and causes all defects to be repelled (attracted) by regions of positive (negative) Gaussian curvatur…
We study the anomalous dimension of the cusped Maldacena-Wilson line in planar $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Yang-Mills theory with scalar insertions using the Quantum Spectral Curve (QSC) method. In the straight line limit we interpret the excited states of the QSC as insertions of scalar operators coupled to the line. Such insertions were recently intensively studied in the context of the one-dimensional defect CFT. We compute a five-loop perturbative result analytically at weak coupling and the first four orders in the $1/\sqrtλ$ expansion at strong coupling, confirming all previous analytic results. I…
We investigate the properties of the twist line defect in the critical 3d Ising model using Monte Carlo simulations. In this model the twist line defect is the boundary of a surface of frustrated links or, in a dual description, the Wilson line of the Z2 gauge theory. We test the hypothesis that the twist line defect flows to a conformal line defect at criticality and evaluate numerically the low-lying spectrum of anomalous dimensions of the local operators which live on the defect as well as mixed correlation functions of local operators in the bulk and on the defect.
We demonstrate that twisted equivariant differential K-theory of transverse complex curves accommodates exotic charges of the form expected of codimension=2 defect branes, such as of D7-branes in IIB/F-theory on A-type orbifold singularities, but also of their dual 3-brane defects of class-S theories on M5-branes. These branes have been argued, within F-theory and the AGT correspondence, to carry special SL(2)-monodromy charges not seen for other branes, but none of these had previously been identified in the expected brane charge quantization law given by K-theory. Here we observe that it is …
We consider the 1d CFT defined by the half-BPS Wilson line in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills. Using analytic bootstrap methods we derive the four-point function of the super-displacement operator at fourth order in a strong coupling expansion. Via AdS/CFT, this corresponds to the first three-loop correlator in AdS ever computed. To do so we address the operator mixing problem by considering a family of auxiliary correlators. We further extract the anomalous dimension of the lightest non-protected operator and find agreement with the integrability-based numerical result of Grabner, Gro…
