This short paper reports the algorithms we used and the evaluation performances for ISIC Challenge 2018. Our team participates in all the tasks in this challenge. In lesion segmentation task, the pyramid scene parsing network (PSPNet) is modified to segment the lesions. In lesion attribute detection task, the modified PSPNet is also adopted in a multi-label way. In disease classification task, the DenseNet-169 is adopted for multi-class classification.
Our team participate in the challenge of Task 1: Lesion Boundary Segmentation , and use a combined network, one of which is designed by ourselves named updcnn net and another is an improved VGG 16-layer net. Updcnn net uses reduced size images for training, and VGG 16-layer net utilizes large size images. Image enhancement is used to get a richer data set. We use boxes in the VGG 16-layer net network for local attention regularization to fine-tune the loss function, which can increase the number of training data, and also make the model more robust. In the test, the model is used for joint tes…

Skin lesion is a severe disease in world-wide extent. Early detection of melanoma in dermoscopy images significantly increases the survival rate. However, the accurate recognition of melanoma is extremely challenging due to the following reasons, e.g. low contrast between lesions and skin, visual similarity between melanoma and non-melanoma lesions, etc. Hence, reliable automatic detection of skin tumors is very useful to increase the accuracy and efficiency of pathologists. International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) is a challenge focusing on the automatic analysis of skin lesion. In thi…

Early detection of skin cancer, particularly melanoma, is crucial to enable advanced treatment. Due to the rapid growth in the numbers of skin cancers, there is a growing need of computerized analysis for skin lesions. The state-of-the-art public available datasets for skin lesions are often accompanied with very limited amount of segmentation ground truth labeling as it is laborious and expensive. The lesion boundary segmentation is vital to locate the lesion accurately in dermoscopic images and lesion diagnosis of different skin lesion types. In this work, we propose the use of fully automat…
Deep learning has played a major role in the interpretation of dermoscopic images for detecting skin defects and abnormalities. However, current deep learning solutions for dermatological lesion analysis are typically limited in providing probabilistic predictions which highlights the importance of concerning uncertainties. This concept of uncertainty can provide a confidence level for each feature which prevents overconfident predictions with poor generalization on unseen data. In this paper, we propose an overall framework that jointly considers dermatological classification and uncertainty …

Most current research is focusing on single-class segmentation irrespective of classes of skin lesions. In this work, we evaluate the performance of deep learning on multi-class segmentation of ISIC-2017 challenge dataset, which consists of 2,750 dermoscopic images. We propose an end-to-end solution using fully convolutional networks (FCNs)…

The two stage framework achieved a mean AUC of 0.857 in ISIC-2017 skin lesion validation set and is 0.04 higher than that of the original inputs, 0.821.
Hybrid Ensemble of Segmentation-Assisted Classification and GBDT for Skin Cancer Detection with Engineered Metadata and Synthetic Lesions from ISIC 2024 Non-Dermoscopic 3D-TBP Images
Skin lesions segmentation is an important step in the process of automated diagnosis of the skin melanoma. However, the accuracy of segmenting melanomas skin lesions is quite a challenging task due to less data for training, irregular shapes, unclear boundaries, and different skin colors. Our proposed approach helps in improving the accuracy of skin lesion segmentation. Firstly, we have introduced the coordinate convolutional layer before passing the input image into the encoder. This layer helps the network to decide on the features related to translation invariance which further improves the…

Skin lesion segmentation is an important step for automatic melanoma diagnosis. Due to the non-negligible diversity of lesions from different patients, extracting powerful context for fine-grained semantic segmentation is still challenging today. Although the deep convolutional neural network (CNNs) have made significant improvements on skin lesion segmentation, they often fail to reserve the spatial details and long-range dependencies context due to consecutive convolution striding and pooling operations inside CNNs. In this paper, we formulate a cascaded context enhancement neural network fo…

Lesion diagnosis of skin lesions is a very challenging task due to high inter-class similarities and intra-class variations in terms of color, size, site and appearance among different skin lesions. With the emergence of computer vision especially deep learning algorithms, lesion diagnosis is made possible using these algorithms trained on dermoscopic images. Usually, deep classification networks are used for the lesion diagnosis to determine different types of skin lesions. In this work, we used pixel-wise classification network to provide lesion diagnosis rather than classification network. …

This work summarizes our submission for the Task 3: Disease Classification of ISIC 2018 challenge in Skin Lesion Analysis Towards Melanoma Detection. We use a novel deep neural network (DNN) ensemble architecture introduced by us that can effectively classify skin lesions by using data-augmentation and bagging to address paucity of data and prevent over-fitting. The ensemble is composed of two DNN architectures: Inception-v4 and Inception-Resnet-v2. The DNN architectures are combined in to an ensemble by using a $1\times1$ convolution for fusion in a meta-learning layer.
We present a superpixel-based strategy for segmenting skin lesion on dermoscopic images. The segmentation is carried out by over-segmenting the original image using the SLIC algorithm, and then merge the resulting superpixels into two regions: healthy skin and lesion. The mean RGB color of each superpixel was used as merging criterion. The presented method is capable of dealing with segmentation problems commonly found in dermoscopic images such as hair removal, oil bubbles, changes in illumination, and reflections images without any additional steps. The method was evaluated on the PH2 and IS…

We recognize that the skin lesion diagnosis is an essential and challenging sub-task in Image classification, in which the Fisher vector (FV) encoding algorithm and deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) are two of the most successful techniques. Since the joint use of FV and DCNN has demonstrated proven success, the joint techniques could have discriminatory power on skin lesion diagnosis as well. To this hypothesis, we propose the aggregation algorithm for skin lesion diagnosis that utilize the residual network to extract the local features and the Fisher vector method to aggregate the loc…

A multi-level deep ensemble (MLDE) model that can be trained in an 'end to end' manner is proposed for skin lesion classification in dermoscopy images. In this model, four pre-trained ResNet-50 networks are used to characterize the multiscale information of skin lesions and are combined by using an adaptive weighting scheme that can be learned during the error back propagation. The proposed MLDE model achieved an average AUC value of 86.5% on the ISIC-skin 2018 official validation dataset, which is substantially higher than the average AUC values achieved by each of four ResNet-50 networks.

The segmentation of skin lesions is a cornerstone task for automated skin lesion analysis, useful both as an end-result to locate/detect the lesions and as an ancillary task for …
