Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. Specifically, melanoma is the cause of 75% of skin cancer deaths, although it is the least common skin cancer. Better detection of melanoma could have a positive impact on millions of people. The ISIC archive contains the largest publicly available collection of dermatoscopic images of skin lesions. In this research, we investigate the efficacy of applying advanced deep learning techniques in computer vision to identify melanoma in images of skin lesions. Through reviewing previous methods, including pre-trained models, deep-learning classifiers, transfer learning, etc., we demonstrate the applicability of the popular deep learning methods on critical clinical problems such as identifying melanoma. Finally, we proposed a processing flow with a validation AUC greater than 94% and a sensitivity greater than 90% on ISIC 2016 - 2020 datasets.

Melanoma is considered to be the deadliest variant of skin cancer causing around 75\% of total skin cancer deaths. To diagnose Melanoma, clinicians assess and compare multiple skin lesions of the same patient concurrently to gather contextual information regarding the patterns, and abnormality of the skin. So far this concurrent multi-image comparative method has not been explored by existing deep learning-based schemes. In this paper, based on contextual image feature fusion (CIFF), a deep neural network (CIFF-Net) is proposed, which integrates patient-level contextual information into the tr…

Prior skin image datasets have not addressed patient-level information obtained from multiple skin lesions from the same patient. Though artificial intelligence classification algorithms have achieved expert-level performance in controlled studies examining single images, in practice dermatologists base their judgment holistically from multiple lesions on the same patient. The 2020 SIIM-ISIC Melanoma Classification challenge dataset described herein was constructed to address this discrepancy between prior challenges and clinical practice, providing for each image in the dataset an identifier …

Skin lesion is a severe disease in world-wide extent. Early detection of melanoma in dermoscopy images significantly increases the survival rate. However, the accurate recognition of melanoma is extremely challenging due to the following reasons, e.g. low contrast between lesions and skin, visual similarity between melanoma and non-melanoma lesions, etc. Hence, reliable automatic detection of skin tumors is very useful to increase the accuracy and efficiency of pathologists. International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) is a challenge focusing on the automatic analysis of skin lesion. In thi…

Melanoma is clinically difficult to distinguish from common benign skin lesions, particularly melanocytic naevus and seborrhoeic keratosis. The dermoscopic appearance of these lesions has huge intra-class variations and high inter-class visual similarities. Most current research is focusing on single-class segmentation irrespective of classes of skin lesions. In this work, we evaluate the performance of deep learning on multi-class segmentation of ISIC-2017 challenge dataset, which consists of 2,750 dermoscopic images. We propose an end-to-end solution using fully convolutional networks (FCNs)…

Automatic melanoma segmentation in dermoscopic images is essential in computer-aided diagnosis of skin cancer. Existing methods may suffer from the hole and shrink problems with limited segmentation performance. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel complementary network with adaptive receptive filed learning. Instead of regarding the segmentation task independently, we introduce a foreground network to detect melanoma lesions and a background network to mask non-melanoma regions. Moreover, we propose adaptive atrous convolution (AAC) and knowledge aggregation module (KAM) to fill holes a…

Melanoma classification is a serious stage to identify the skin disease. It is considered a challenging process due to the intra-class discrepancy of melanomas, skin lesions low contrast, and the artifacts in the dermoscopy images, including noise, existence of hair, air bubbles, and the similarity between melanoma and non-melanoma cases. To solve these problems, we propose a novel multiple convolution neural network model (MCNN) to classify different seven disease types in dermoscopic images, where several models were trained separately using an additive sample learning strategy. The MCNN mod…
Malignant melanoma has one of the most rapidly increasing incidences in the world and has a considerable mortality rate. Early diagnosis is particularly important since melanoma can be cured with prompt excision. Dermoscopy images play an important role in the non-invasive early detection of melanoma [1]. However, melanoma detection using human vision alone can be subjective, inaccurate and poorly reproducible even among experienced dermatologists. This is attributed to the challenges in interpreting images with diverse characteristics including lesions of varying sizes and shapes, lesions tha…

Melanoma is a life-threatening form of skin cancer when left undiagnosed at the early stages. Although there are more cases of non-melanoma cancer than melanoma cancer, melanoma cancer is more deadly. Early detection of melanoma is crucial for the timely diagnosis of melanoma cancer and prohibit its spread to distant body parts. Segmentation of skin lesion is a crucial step in the classification of melanoma cancer from the cancerous lesions in dermoscopic images. Manual segmentation of dermoscopic skin images is very time consuming and error-prone resulting in an urgent need for an intelligent…

All datasets contain some biases, often unintentional, due to how they were acquired and annotated. These biases distort machine-learning models' performance, creating spurious correlations that the models can unfairly exploit, or, contrarily destroying clear correlations that the models could learn. With the popularity of deep learning models, automated skin lesion analysis is starting to play an essential role in the early detection of Melanoma. The ISIC Archive is one of the most used skin lesion sources to benchmark deep learning-based tools. Bissoto et al. experimented with different boun…

Fully automatic detection of skin lesions in dermatoscopic images can facilitate early diagnosis and repression of malignant melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Although convolutional neural networks are a powerful solution, they are limited by the illumination spectrum of annotated dermatoscopic screening images, where color is an important discriminative feature. In this paper, we propose an adaptive color augmentation technique to amplify data expression and model performance, while regulating color difference and saturation to minimize the risks of using synthetic data. Deep learning-based melanoma classification with dermoscopic images has recently shown great potential in automatic early-stage melanoma diagnosis. However, limited by the significant data imbalance and obvious extraneous artifacts, i.e., the hair and ruler markings, discriminative feature extraction from dermoscopic images is very challenging. In this study, we seek to resolve these problems respectively towards better representation learning for lesion features. Specifically, a GAN-based data augmentation (GDA) strategy is adapted to generate synthetic melanoma-positive images, in conjunctio…
