We present our winning solution to the SIIM-ISIC Melanoma Classification Challenge. It is an ensemble of convolutions neural network (CNN) models with different backbones and input sizes, most of which are image-only models while a few of them used image-level and patient-level metadata. The keys to our winning are: (1) stable validation scheme (2) good choice of model target (3) carefully tuned pipeline and (4) ensembling with very diverse models. The winning submission scored 0.9600 AUC on cross validation and 0.9490 AUC on private leaderboard.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. Specifically, melanoma is the cause of 75% of skin cancer deaths, although it is the least common skin cancer. Better detection of melanoma could have a positive impact on millions of people. The ISIC archive contains the largest publicly available collection of dermatoscopic images of skin lesions. In this research, we investigate the efficacy of applying advanced deep learning techniques in computer vision to identify melanoma in images of skin lesions. Through reviewing previous methods, including pre-trained models, deep-learning classifiers, …

Skin lesion is a severe disease in world-wide extent. Early detection of melanoma in dermoscopy images significantly increases the survival rate. However, the accurate recognition of melanoma is extremely challenging due to the following reasons, e.g. low contrast between lesions and skin, visual similarity between melanoma and non-melanoma lesions, etc. Hence, reliable automatic detection of skin tumors is very useful to increase the accuracy and efficiency of pathologists. International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) is a challenge focusing on the automatic analysis of skin lesion. In thi…
Existing studies for automated melanoma diagnosis are based on single-time point images of lesions. However, melanocytic lesions de facto are progressively evolving and, moreover, benign lesions can progress into malignant melanoma. Ignoring cross-time morphological changes of lesions thus may lead to misdiagnosis in borderline cases. Based on the fact that dermatologists diagnose ambiguous skin lesions by evaluating the dermoscopic changes over time via follow-up examination, in this study, we propose an automated framework for melanoma diagnosis using sequential dermoscopic images. To captur…

Specifically, to exploit the knowledge of morphological expressions of the lesion region and …
Malignant melanoma has one of the most rapidly increasing incidences in the world and has a considerable mortality rate. Early diagnosis is particularly important since melanoma can be cured with prompt excision. Dermoscopy images play an important role in the non-invasive early detection of melanoma [1]. However, melanoma detection using human vision alone can be subjective, inaccurate and poorly reproducible even among experienced dermatologists. This is attributed to the challenges in interpreting images with diverse characteristics including lesions of varying sizes and shapes, lesions tha…
An approach to lesion recognition is described that for lesion localization uses an ensemble of segmentation techniques and for lesion classification an exhaustive structural analysis. For localization, candidate regions are obtained from global thresholding of the chromatic maps and from applying the K-Means algorithm to the RGB image; the candidate regions are then integrated. For classification, a relatively exhaustive structural analysis of contours and regions is carried out.

Melanoma is one of the ten most common cancers in the US. Early detection is crucial for survival, but often the cancer is diagnosed in the fatal stage. Deep learning has the potential to improve cancer detection rates, but its applicability to melanoma detection is compromised by the limitations of the available skin lesion databases, which are small, heavily imbalanced, and contain images with occlusions. We build deep-learning-based tools for data purification and augmentation to counter-act these limitations. The developed tools can be utilized in a deep learning system for lesion classifi…

Melanoma is clinically difficult to distinguish from common benign skin lesions, particularly melanocytic naevus and seborrhoeic keratosis. The dermoscopic appearance of these lesions has huge intra-class variations and high inter-class visual similarities. Most current research is focusing on single-class segmentation irrespective of classes of skin lesions. In this work, we evaluate the performance of deep learning on multi-class segmentation of ISIC-2017 challenge dataset, which consists of 2,750 dermoscopic images. We propose an end-to-end solution using fully convolutional networks (FCNs)…
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) deliver exceptional results for computer vision, including medical image analysis. The identification of melanoma involves an integrated analysis of skin lesion images acquired using the clinical and dermoscopy modalities. Dermoscopic images provide a detailed view of the subsurface visual structures that supplement the macroscopic clinical images. Melanoma diagnosis is commonly based on the 7-point visual category checklist (7PC). The 7PC contains intrinsic relationships between categories that can aid classification, such as shared features, correlations, and the contributions of categories towards diagnosis. Manual classification is subjective and prone to intra- and inte…

Melanoma is a prevalent lethal type of cancer that is treatable if diagnosed at early stages of development. Skin lesions are a typical indicator for diagnosing melanoma but they often led to delayed diagnosis due to high similarities of cancerous and benign lesions at early stages of melanoma. Deep learning (DL) can be used as a solution to classify skin lesion pictures with a high accuracy, but clinical adoption of deep learning faces a significant challenge. The reason is that the decision processes of deep learning models are often uninterpretable which makes them black boxes that are chal…

Automatic image segmentation tools play an important role in providing standardized computer-assisted analysis for skin melanoma patients. Current state-of-the-art segmentation methods are based on fully convolutional neural networks, which utilize an encoder-decoder approach. However, these methods produce coarse segmentation masks due to the loss of location information during the encoding layers. Inspired by Pyramid Scene Parsing Network (PSP-Net), we propose an encoder-decoder model t…
