An approach to lesion recognition is described that for lesion localization uses an ensemble of segmentation techniques and for lesion classification an exhaustive structural analysis. For localization, candidate regions are obtained from global thresholding of the chromatic maps and from applying the K-Means algorithm to the RGB image; the candidate regions are then integrated. For classification, a relatively exhaustive structural analysis of contours and regions is carried out.

Automatic melanoma segmentation in dermoscopic images is essential in computer-aided diagnosis of skin cancer. Existing methods may suffer from the hole and shrink problems with limited segmentation performance. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel complementary network with adaptive receptive filed learning. Instead of regarding the segmentation task independently, we introduce a foreground network to detect melanoma lesions and a background network to mask non-melanoma regions. Moreover, we propose adaptive atrous convolution (AAC) and knowledge aggregation module (KAM) to fill holes a…

Deep learning techniques have shown their superior performance in dermatologist clinical inspection. Nevertheless, melanoma diagnosis is still a challenging task due to the difficulty of incorporating the useful dermatologist clinical knowledge into the learning process. In this paper, we propose a novel knowledge-aware deep framework that incorporates some clinical knowledge into collaborative learning of two important melanoma diagnosis tasks, i.e., skin lesion segmentation and melanoma recognition. Specifically, to exploit the knowledge of morphological expressions of the lesion region and …
Melanoma is one of the most serious skin cancers that can occur in any part of the human skin. Early diagnosis of melanoma lesions will significantly increase their chances of being cured. Improving melanoma segmentation will help doctors or surgical robots remove the lesion more accurately from body parts. Recently, the learning-based segmentation methods achieved desired results in image segmentation compared to traditional algorithms. This study proposes a new approach to improve melanoma skin lesions detection and segmentation by defining a two-step pipeline based on deep learning models. …

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) deliver exceptional results for computer vision, including medical image analysis. With the growing number of available architectures, picking one over another is far from obvious. Existing art suggests that, when performing transfer learning, the performance of CNN architectures on ImageNet correlates strongly with their performance on target tasks. We evaluate that claim for melanoma classification, over 9 CNNs architectures, in 5 sets of splits created on the ISIC Challenge 2017 dataset, and 3 repeated measures, resulting in 135 models. The correlations …

Lesion images are frequently taken in open-set settings. Because of this, the image data generated is extremely varied in nature. It is difficult for a convolutional neural network to find proper features and generalise well, as a result content based image retrieval (CBIR) system for lesion images are difficult to build. This paper explores this domain and proposes multiple similarity measures which uses Style Loss and Dice Coefficient via a novel similarity measure called I1-Score. Out of the CBIR similarity measures proposed, pure style loss approach achieves a remarkable accuracy increase o…
Melanoma is clinically difficult to distinguish from common benign skin lesions, particularly melanocytic naevus and seborrhoeic keratosis. The dermoscopic appearance of these lesions has huge intra-class variations and high inter-class visual similarities. Most current research is focusing on single-class segmentation irrespective of classes of skin lesions. In this work, we evaluate the performance of deep learning on multi-class segmentation of ISIC-2017 challenge dataset, which consists of 2,750 dermoscopic images. We propose an end-to-end solution using fully convolutional networks (FCNs)…

Automatic image segmentation tools play an important role in providing standardized computer-assisted analysis for skin melanoma patients. Current state-of-the-art segmentation methods are based on fully convolutional neural networks, which utilize an encoder-decoder approach. However, these methods produce coarse segmentation masks due to the loss of location information during the encoding layers.
