Skin lesion is a severe disease in world-wide extent. Early detection of melanoma in dermoscopy images significantly increases the survival rate. However, the accurate recognition of melanoma is extremely challenging due to the following reasons, e.g. low contrast between lesions and skin, visual similarity between melanoma and non-melanoma lesions, etc. Hence, reliable automatic detection of skin tumors is very useful to increase the accuracy and efficiency of pathologists. International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) is a challenge focusing on the automatic analysis of skin lesion. In this paper, we proposed two deep learning methods to address all the three tasks announced in ISIC 2017, i.e. lesion segmentation (task 1), lesion dermoscopic feature extraction (task 2) and lesion classification (task 3). A deep learning framework consisting of two fully-convolutional residual networks (FCRN) is proposed to simultaneously produce the segmentation result and the coarse classification result. A lesion index calculation unit (LICU) is developed to refine the coarse classification results by calculating the distance heat-map. A straight-forward CNN is proposed for the dermoscopic feature extraction task. To our best knowledges, we are not aware of any previous work proposed for this task. The proposed deep learning frameworks were evaluated on the ISIC 2017 testing set. Experimental results show the promising accuracies of our frameworks, i.e. 0.718 for task 1, 0.833 for task 2 and 0.823 for task 3 were achieved.

Existing studies for automated melanoma diagnosis are based on single-time point images of lesions. However, melanocytic lesions de facto are progressively evolving and, moreover, benign lesions can progress into malignant melanoma. Ignoring cross-time morphological changes of lesions thus may lead to misdiagnosis in borderline cases. Based on the fact that dermatologists diagnose ambiguous skin lesions by evaluating the dermoscopic changes over time via follow-up examination, in this study, we propose an automated framework for melanoma diagnosis using sequential dermoscopic images. To captur…
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. Specifically, melanoma is the cause of 75% of skin cancer deaths, although it is the least common skin cancer. Better detection of melanoma could have a positive impact on millions of people. The ISIC archive contains the largest publicly available collection of dermatoscopic images of skin lesions. In this research, we investigate the efficacy of applying advanced deep learning techniques in computer vision to identify melanoma in images of skin lesions. Through reviewing previous methods, including pre-trained models, deep-learning classifiers, …

Deep learning techniques have shown their superior performance in dermatologist clinical inspection. Nevertheless, melanoma diagnosis is still a challenging task due to the difficulty of incorporating the useful dermatologist clinical knowledge into the learning process. In this paper, we propose a novel knowledge-aware deep framework that incorporates some clinical knowledge into collaborative learning of two important melanoma diagnosis tasks, i.e., skin lesion segmentation and melanoma recognition. Specifically, to exploit the knowledge of morphological expressions of the lesion region and …

Malignant melanoma has one of the most rapidly increasing incidences in the world and has a considerable mortality rate. Early diagnosis is particularly important since melanoma can be cured with prompt excision. Dermoscopy images play an important role in the non-invasive early detection of melanoma [1]. However, melanoma detection using human vision alone can be subjective, inaccurate and poorly reproducible even among experienced dermatologists. This is attributed to the challenges in interpreting images with diverse characteristics including lesions of varying sizes and shapes, lesions tha…

An approach to lesion recognition is described that for lesion localization uses an ensemble of segmentation techniques and for lesion classification an exhaustive structural analysis. For localization, candidate regions are obtained from global thresholding of the chromatic maps and from applying the K-Means algorithm to the RGB image; the candidate regions are then integrated. For classification, a relatively exhaustive structural analysis of contours and regions is carried out.

Melanoma is one of the ten most common cancers in the US. Early detection is crucial for survival, but often the cancer is diagnosed in the fatal stage. Deep learning has the potential to improve cancer detection rates, but its applicability to melanoma detection is compromised by the limitations of the available skin lesion databases, which are small, heavily imbalanced, and contain images with occlusions. We build deep-learning-based tools for data purification and augmentation to counter-act these limitations. The developed tools can be utilized in a deep learning system for lesion classifi…

Convolutional Neural Networks have demonstrated human-level performance in the classification of melanoma and other skin lesions, but evident performance disparities between differing skin tones should be addressed before widespread deployment. In this work, we propose an efficient yet effective algorithm for automatically labelling the skin tone of lesion images, and use this to annotate the benchmark ISIC dataset. We subsequently use these automated labels as the target for two leading bias unlearning techniques towards mitigating skin tone bias. Our experimental results provide evidence tha…

In this paper, we studied extensively on different deep learning based methods to detect melanoma and skin lesion cancers. Melanoma, a form of malignant skin cancer is very threatening to health. Proper diagnosis of melanoma at an earlier stage is crucial for the success rate of complete cure. Dermoscopic images with Benign and malignant forms of skin cancer can be analyzed by computer vision system to streamline the process of skin cancer detection. In this study, we experimented with various neural networks which employ recent deep learning based models like PNASNet-5-Large, InceptionResNetV…
Melanoma is clinically difficult to distinguish from common benign skin lesions, particularly melanocytic naevus and seborrhoeic keratosis. The dermoscopic appearance of these lesions has huge intra-class variations and high inter-class visual similarities. Most current research is focusing on single-class segmentation irrespective of classes of skin lesions. In this work, we evaluate the performance of deep learning on multi-class segmentation of ISIC-2017 challenge dataset, which consists of 2,750 dermoscopic images. We propose an end-to-end solution using fully convolutional networks (FCNs)…

Melanoma classification is a serious stage to identify the skin disease. It is considered a challenging process due to the intra-class discrepancy of melanomas, skin lesions low contrast, and the artifacts in the dermoscopy images, including noise, existence of hair, air bubbles, and the similarity between melanoma and non-melanoma cases. To solve these problems, we propose a novel multiple convolution neural network model (MCNN) to classify different seven disease types in dermoscopic images, where several models were trained separately using an additive sample learning strategy. The MCNN mod…

This study proposes a new approach to improve melanoma skin lesions detection and segmentation by defining a two-step pipeline based on deep learning models. …
The identification of melanoma involves an integrated analysis of skin lesion images acquired using the clinical and dermoscopy modalities. Dermoscopic images provide a detailed view of the subsurface visual structures that supplement the macroscopic clinical images. Melanoma diagnosis is commonly based on the 7-point visual category checklist (7PC). The 7PC contains intrinsic relationships between categories that can aid classification, such as shared features, correlations, and the contributions of categories towards diagnosis. Manual classification is subjective and prone to intra- and inte…

Automatic melanoma segmentation in dermoscopic images is essential in computer-aided diagnosis of skin cancer. Existing methods may suffer from the hole and shrink problems with limited segmentation performance. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel complementary network with adaptive receptive filed learning. Melanoma is a prevalent lethal type of cancer that is treatable if diagnosed at early stages of development. Skin lesions are a typical indicator for diagnosing melanoma but they often led to delayed diagnosis due to high similarities of cancerous and benign lesions at early stages of melanoma. Deep learning (DL) can be used as a solution to classify skin lesion pictures with a high accuracy, but clinical adoption of deep learning faces a significant challenge. The reason is that the decision processes of deep learning models are often uninterpretable which makes them black boxes that are chal…

Skin lesion detection in dermoscopic images is essential in the accurate and early diagnosis of skin cancer by a computerized apparatus. Current skin lesion segmentation approaches show poor performance in challenging circumstances such as indistinct lesion boundaries, low contrast between the lesion and the surrounding area, or heterogeneous background that causes over/under segmentation of the skin lesion. To accurately recognize the lesion from the neighboring regions, we propose a dilated scale-wise feature fusion network based on convolution factorization. Our network is designed to simul…

In this study, we investigate what a practically useful approach is in order to achieve robust skin disease diagnosis. A direct approach is to target the ground truth diagnosis labels, while an alternative approach instead focuses on determining skin lesion characteristics that are more visually consistent and discernible. We argue that, for computer-aided skin disease diagnosis, it is both more realistic and more useful that lesion type tags should be considered as the target of an automated diagnosis system such that the system can first achieve a high accuracy in describing skin lesions, an…

We recognize that the skin lesion diagnosis is an essential and challenging sub-task in Image classification, in which the Fisher vector (FV) encoding algorithm and deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) are two of the most successful techniques. Since the joint use of FV and DCNN has demonstrated proven success, the joint techniques could have discriminatory power on skin lesion diagnosis as well. To this hypothesis, we propose the aggregation algorithm for skin lesion diagnosis that utilize the residual network to extract the local features and the Fisher vector method to aggregate the loc…
