We proposed a two stage framework with only one network to analyze skin lesion images, we firstly trained a convolutional network to classify these images, and cropped the import regions which the network has the maximum activation value. In the second stage, we retrained this CNN with the image regions extracted from stage one and output the final probabilities. The two stage framework achieved a mean AUC of 0.857 in ISIC-2017 skin lesion validation set and is 0.04 higher than that of the original inputs, 0.821.

One of the essential tasks in medical image analysis is segmentation and accurate detection of borders. Lesion segmentation in skin images is an essential step in the computerized detection of skin cancer. However, many of the state-of-the-art segmentation methods have deficiencies in their border detection phase. In this paper, a new class of fully convolutional network is proposed, with new dense pooling layers for segmentation of lesion regions in skin images. This network leads to highly accurate segmentation of lesions on skin lesion datasets which outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms …

Skin lesion identification is a key step toward dermatological diagnosis. When describing a skin lesion, it is very important to note its body site distribution as many skin diseases commonly affect particular parts of the body. To exploit the correlation between skin lesions and their body site distributions, in this study, we investigate the possibility of improving skin lesion classification using the additional context information provided by body location. Specifically, we build a deep multi-task learning (MTL) framework to jointly optimize skin lesion classification and body location cla…

Skin lesion detection in dermoscopic images is essential in the accurate and early diagnosis of skin cancer by a computerized apparatus. Current skin lesion segmentation approaches show poor performance in challenging circumstances such as indistinct lesion boundaries, low contrast between the lesion and the surrounding area, or heterogeneous background that causes over/under segmentation of the skin lesion. To accurately recognize the lesion from the neighboring regions, we propose a dilated scale-wise feature fusion network based on convolution factorization. Our network is designed to simul…

Skin lesion segmentation is one of the first steps towards automatic Computer-Aided Diagnosis of skin cancer. Vast variety in the appearance of the skin lesion makes this task very challenging. The contribution of this paper is to apply a power foreground extraction technique called GrabCut for automatic skin lesion segmentation with minimal human interaction in HSV color space. Preprocessing was performed for removing the outer black border. Jaccard Index was measured to evaluate the performance of the segmentation method. On average, 0.71 Jaccard Index was achieved on 1000 images from ISIC c…
In this study, we investigate what a practically useful approach is in order to achieve robust skin disease diagnosis. A direct approach is to target the ground truth diagnosis labels, while an alternative approach instead focuses on determining skin lesion characteristics that are more visually consistent and discernible. We argue that, for computer-aided skin disease diagnosis, it is both more realistic and more useful that lesion type tags should be considered as the target of an automated diagnosis system such that the system can first achieve a high accuracy in describing skin lesions, an…
There has been a steady increase in the incidence of skin cancer worldwide, with a high rate of mortality. Early detection and segmentation of skin lesions are crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment, necessary to improve the survival rate of patients. However, skin lesion segmentation is a challenging task due to the low contrast of lesions and their high similarity in terms of appearance, to healthy tissue. This underlines the need for an accurate and automatic approach for skin lesion segmentation. To tackle this issue, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) called SkinNet. The …
In this work, we explore the issue of the inter-annotator agreement for training and evaluating automated segmentation of skin lesions. We explore what different degrees of agreement represent, and how they affect different use cases for segmentation. We also evaluate how conditioning the ground truths using different (but very simple) algorithms may help to enhance agreement and may be appropriate for some use cases. The segmentation of skin lesions is a cornerstone task for automated skin lesion analysis, useful both as an end-result to locate/detect the lesions and as an ancillary task for …

We recognize that the skin lesion diagnosis is an essential and challenging sub-task in Image classification, in which the Fisher vector (FV) encoding algorithm and deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) are two of the most successful techniques. Since the joint use of FV and DCNN has demonstrated proven success, the joint techniques could have discriminatory power on skin lesion diagnosis as well. To this hypothesis, we propose the aggregation algorithm for skin lesion diagnosis that utilize the residual network to extract the local features and the Fisher vector method to aggregate the loc…

In this paper, we study the problem of out-of-distribution detection in skin disease images. Publicly available medical datasets normally have a limited number of lesion classes (e.g. HAM10000 has 8 lesion classes). However, there exists a few thousands of clinically identified diseases. Hence, it is important if lesions not in the training data can be differentiated. Toward this goal, we propose DeepIF, a non-parametric Isolation Forest based approach combined with deep convolutional networks. We conduct comprehensive experiments to compare our DeepIF with three baseline models. Results demon…
Accurate segmentation of skin lesion from dermoscopic images is a crucial part of computer-aided diagnosis of melanoma. It is challenging due to the fact that dermoscopic images from different patients have non-negligible lesion variation, which causes difficulties in anatomical structure learning and consistent skin lesion delineation. In this paper, we propose a novel bi-directional dermoscopic feature learning (biDFL) framework to model the complex correlation between skin lesions and their informative context. By controlling feature information passing through two complementary directions,…

The presented method is capable of dealing with segmentation problems commonly found in dermoscopic images such as hair removal, oil bubbles, changes in illumination, and reflections images without any additional steps. The method was evaluated on the PH2 and IS…

A multi-level deep ensemble (MLDE) model that can be trained in an 'end to end' manner is proposed for skin lesion classification in dermoscopy images. In this model, four pre-trained ResNet-50 networks are used to characterize the multiscale information of skin lesions and are combined by using an adaptive weighting scheme that can be learned during the error back propagation. The proposed MLDE model achieved an average AUC value of 86.5% on the ISIC-skin 2018 official validation dataset, which is substantially higher than the average AUC values achieved by each of four ResNet-50 networks.

Skin cancer detection is challenging since different types of skin lesions share high similarities. This paper proposes a computer-based deep learning approach that will accurately identify different kinds of skin lesions. Deep learning approaches can detect skin cancer very accurately since the models learn each pixel of an image. Sometimes humans can get confused by the similarities of the skin lesions, which we can minimize by involving the machine. However, not all deep learning approaches can give better predictions. Some deep learning models have limitations, leading the model to a false…

Melanoma is amongst most aggressive types of cancer. However, it is highly curable if detected in its early stages. Prescreening of suspicious moles and lesions for malignancy is of great importance. Detection can be done by images captured by standard cameras, which are more preferable due to low cost and availability. One important step in computerized evaluation of skin lesions is accurate detection of lesion region, i.e. segmentation of an image into two regions as lesion and normal skin. Accurate segmentation can be challenging due to burdens such as illumination variation and low contras…

Segmentation of skin lesions is considered as an important step in computer aided diagnosis (CAD) for automated melanoma diagnosis. In recent years, segmentation methods based on fully convolutional networks (FCN) have achieved great success in general images. This success is primarily due to the leveraging of large labelled datasets to learn features that correspond to the shallow appearance as well as the deep semantics of the images. However, the dependence on large dataset does not translate well into medical images. To improve the FCN performance for skin lesion segmentations, researchers…
