Segmentation of skin lesions is considered as an important step in computer aided diagnosis (CAD) for automated melanoma diagnosis. In recent years, segmentation methods based on fully convolutional networks (FCN) have achieved great success in general images. This success is primarily due to the leveraging of large labelled datasets to learn features that correspond to the shallow appearance as well as the deep semantics of the images. However, the dependence on large dataset does not translate well into medical images. To improve the FCN performance for skin lesion segmentations, researchers attempted to use specific cost functions or add post-processing algorithms to refine the coarse boundaries of the FCN results. However, the performance of these methods is heavily reliant on the tuning of many parameters and post-processing techniques. In this paper, we leverage the state-of-the-art image feature learning method of generative adversarial network (GAN) for its inherent ability to produce consistent and realistic image features by using deep neural networks and adversarial learning concept. We improve upon GAN such that skin lesion features can be learned at different level of complexities, in a controlled manner. The outputs from our method is then augmented to the existing FCN training data, thus increasing the overall feature diversity. We evaluated our method on the ISIC 2018 skin lesion segmentation challenge dataset and showed that it was more accurate and robust when compared to the existing skin lesion segmentation methods.

Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of human cancer. It is recognized mainly visually, beginning with clinical screening and continuing with the dermoscopic examination, histological assessment, and specimen collection. Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) perform highly segregated and potentially universal tasks against a classified finegrained object. This research proposes a novel multi-class prediction framework that classifies skin lesions based on ViT and ViTGAN. Vision transformers-based GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks) are utilized to tackle the class imbalance. T…

As many other machine learning driven medical image analysis tasks, skin image analysis suffers from a chronic lack of labeled data and skewed class distributions, which poses problems for the training of robust and well-generalizing models. The ability to synthesize realistic looking images of skin lesions could act as a reliever for the aforementioned problems. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have been successfully used to synthesize realistically looking medical images, however limited to low resolution, whereas machine learning models for challenging tasks such as skin lesion segmen…
Skin lesion segmentation is a vital task in skin cancer diagnosis and further treatment. Although deep learning based approaches have significantly improved the segmentation accuracy, these algorithms are still reliant on having a large enough dataset in order to achieve adequate results. Inspired by the immense success of generative adversarial networks (GANs), we propose a GAN-based augmentation of the original dataset in order to improve the segmentation performance. In particular, we use the segmentation masks available in the training dataset to train the Mask2Lesion model, and use the mo…
Skin cancer is by far the most common type of cancer. Early detection is the key to increase the chances for successful treatment significantly. Currently, Deep Neural Networks are the state-of-the-art results on automated skin cancer classification. Despite the growing availability of high-quality public datasets, the lack of training samples is still one of the main challenges of deep-learning for skin lesion analysis. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) appear as an enticing alternative to alleviate the issue, by synthesizing samples indistinguishable from real images, with a plethora of works employing them for medical applications. Nevertheless, carefully designed experiments for skin-lesion diagnosis with GAN-based data augmentation show favorable results only on out-of-distribution test sets. The determination of precise skin lesion boundaries in dermoscopic images using automated methods faces many challenges, most importantly, the presence of hair, inconspicuous lesion edges and low contrast in dermoscopic images, and variability in the color, texture and shapes of skin lesions. Existing deep learning-based skin lesion segmentation algorithms are expensive in terms of computational time and memory. Consequently, running such segmentation algorithms requires a powerful GPU and high bandwidth memory, which are not available in dermoscopy devices. Thus, this article aims to achieve …

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) show a significant impact on medical imaging. One significant problem with adopting DNNs for skin cancer classification is that the class frequencies in the existing datasets are imbalanced. This problem hinders the training of robust and well-generalizing models. Data Augmentation addresses this by using existing data more effectively. However, standard data augmentation implementations are manually designed and produce only limited reasonably alternative data. Instead, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) is utilized to generate a much broader set of augmentatio…

Skin lesion detection in dermoscopic images is essential in the accurate and early diagnosis of skin cancer by a computerized apparatus. Current skin lesion segmentation approaches show poor performance in challenging circumstances such as indistinct lesion boundaries, low contrast between the lesion and the surrounding area, or heterogeneous background that causes over/under segmentation of the skin lesion. To accurately recognize the lesion from the neighboring regions, we propose a dilated scale-wise feature fusion network based on convolution factorization. Our network is designed to simul…

We recognize that the skin lesion diagnosis is an essential and challenging sub-task in Image classification, in which the Fisher vector (FV) encoding algorithm and deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) are two of the most successful techniques. To this hypothesis, we propose the aggregation algorithm for skin lesion diagnosis that utilize the residual network to extract the local features and the Fisher vector method to aggregate the loc…

Toward this goal, we propose DeepIF, a non-parametric Isolation Forest based approach combined with deep convolutional networks. We conduct comprehensive experiments to compare our DeepIF with three baseline models. Results demon…
