In this paper, we study the problem of out-of-distribution detection in skin disease images. Publicly available medical datasets normally have a limited number of lesion classes (e.g. HAM10000 has 8 lesion classes). However, there exists a few thousands of clinically identified diseases. Hence, it is important if lesions not in the training data can be differentiated. Toward this goal, we propose DeepIF, a non-parametric Isolation Forest based approach combined with deep convolutional networks. We conduct comprehensive experiments to compare our DeepIF with three baseline models. Results demonstrate state-of-the-art performance of our proposed approach on the task of detecting abnormal skin lesions.

We present a two-stage method for lesion segmentation with optimised training method and ensemble post-process. We proposed a two stage framework with only one network to analyze skin lesion images, we firstly trained a convolutional network to classify these images, and cropped the import regions which the network has the maximum activation value. In the second stage, we retrained this CNN with the image regions extracted from stage one and output the final probabilities. The two stage framework achieved a mean AUC of 0.857 in ISIC-2017 skin lesion validation set and is 0.04 higher than that of the original inputs, 0.821.

This paper summarizes the method used in our submission to Task 1 of the International Skin Imaging Collaboration's (ISIC) Skin Lesion Analysis Towards Melanoma Detection challenge held in 2018. We used a fully automated method to accurately segment lesion boundaries from dermoscopic images. A U-net deep learning network is trained on publicly available data from ISIC. We introduce the use of intensity, color, and texture enhancement operations as pre-processing steps and morphological operations and contour identification as post-processing steps.

This work summarizes our submission for the Task 3: Disease Classification of ISIC 2018 challenge in Skin Lesion Analysis Towards Melanoma Detection. We use a novel deep neural network (DNN) ensemble architecture introduced by us that can effectively classify skin lesions by using data-augmentation and bagging to address paucity of data and prevent over-fitting. The ensemble is composed of two DNN architectures: Inception-v4 and Inception-Resnet-v2. The DNN architectures are combined in to an ensemble by using a $1\times1$ convolution for fusion in a meta-learning layer.
We present a superpixel-based strategy for segmenting skin lesion on dermoscopic images. A multi-level deep ensemble (MLDE) model that can be trained in an 'end to end' manner is proposed for skin lesion classification in dermoscopy images. In this model, four pre-trained ResNet-50 networks are used to characterize the multiscale information of skin lesions and are combined by using an adaptive weighting scheme that can be learned during the error back propagation. The proposed MLDE model achieved an average AUC value of 86.5% on the ISIC-skin 2018 official validation dataset, which is substantially higher than the average AUC values achieved by each of four ResNet-50 networks.

This manuscript describes our participation in the International Skin Imaging Collaboration's 2017 Skin Lesion Analysis Towards Melanoma Detection competition. We participated in Part 3: Lesion Classification. The two stated goals of this binary image classification challenge were to distinguish between (a) melanoma and (b) nevus and seborrheic keratosis, followed by distinguishing between (a) seborrheic keratosis and (b) nevus and melanoma. Segmenting skin lesions images is relevant both for itself and for assisting in lesion classification, but suffers from the challenge in obtaining annotated data. In this work, we show that segmentation may improve with less data, by selecting the training samples with best inter-annotator agreement, and conditioning the ground-truth masks to remove excessive detail. We perform an exhaustive experimental design considering several sources of variation, including three different test sets, two different deep-learning architectures, and several replications, for a total of 540 experimental runs.…

Automatic skin lesion segmentation on dermoscopic images is an essential component in computer-aided diagnosis of melanoma.
