An analytical solution to the time evolution of decay of one and two identical noninteracting particles is presented using the formalism of resonant states. It is shown that the time-dependent wave function and hence the survival and nonescape probabilities for the initial state of a single particle and entangled symmetric and antisymmetric initial states of two identical particles evolve in a distinctive form along the exponential and long-time nonexponential decaying regimes. In particular, for the last regime, they exhibit different inverse power of time behaviors.
We study the quantum entanglement and separability of Hermitian and pseudo-Hermitian systems of identical bosonic or fermionic particles with point interactions. The separability conditions are investigated in detail.
By using an exact analytical non-Hermitian formalism involving the full set of resonance (quasinormal) states and complex energy eigenvalues for quantum tunneling decay, we show that unitarity holds at any instant of time for the nonstationary decaying probability density in the whole space, thus providing a fundamental description of the quantum mechanical decay process.
This work discusses Hermitian and non-Hermitian formulations for the time evolution of quantum decay, that involve respectively, continuum wave functions and resonant states, to show that they lead to an identical description for a large class of well behaved potentials. Our approach is based on the analytical properties of the outgoing Green's function to the problem in the complex wave number plane.
We study the dynamics of non-adiabatic transitions in non-Hermitian multi-level parabolic models where the separations of the diabatic energies are quadratic function of time. The model Hamiltonian has been used to describe the non-Hermitian dynamics of two pairs of coupled cavities. In the absence of the coupling between any two pairs of cavities, the wave amplitudes within each subsystem are described by the tri-confluent Heun functions. When all the couplings between the cavities are present, we reduce the dynamics into a set of two coupled tri-confluent Heun equations, from which we derive…
We propose a procedure to obtain exact analytical solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equations involving explicit time-dependent Hermitian Hamitonians from solutions to time-independent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems and the time-dependent Dyson relation together with the time-dependent quasi-Hermiticity relation. We illustrate the working of this method for a simple Hermitian Rabi-type model by relating it to a non-Hermitian time-independent system corresponding to the one-site lattice Yang-Lee model.
We provide the first solution of a time-dependent metric operator for the non-Hermitian Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian. We use this solution to calculate the entanglement between two identical isolated such Hamiltonians. The presence of a non-Hermitian interaction term leads to a spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime which manifests itself in the exotic time-evolution of entanglement. When the symmetry is broken, oscillatory modes transition into decay. As such that there is a drastic difference in behaviour between the broken and unbroken regimes.
A non-hermitian deformation of the one-dimensional transverse Ising model is shown to have the property of quasi-hermiticity. The transverse Ising chain is obtained from the starting non-hermitian Hamiltonian through a similarity transformation. Consequently, both the models have identical eigen-spectra, although the eigen-functions are different. The metric in the Hilbert space, which makes the non-hermitian model unitary and ensures the completeness of states, has been constructed explicitly. Although the longitudinal correlation functions are identical for both the non-hermitian and the her…
A series of exactly solvable non-trivial complex potentials (possessing real spectra) are generated by applying the Darboux transformation to the excited eigenstates of a non-Hermitian potential V(x). This method yields an infinite number of non-trivial partner potentials, defined over the whole real line, whose spectra are nearly exactly identical to the original potential.
We propose a simple method of combined synchronous modulations to generate the analytically exact solutions for a parity-time symmetric two-level system. Such exact solutions are expressible in terms of simple elementary functions and helpful for illuminating some generalizations of appealing concepts originating in the Hermitian system. Some intriguing physical phenomena, such as stabilization of a non-Hermitian system by periodic driving, non-Hermitian analogs of coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT) and complete population inversion (CPI), are demonstrated analytically and confirmed numer…
We study the interplay between non-Hermitian dynamics and phase synchronization in a system of $\mathcal{N}$ bosonic modes coupled to an auxiliary mode. The linearity of the evolution in such a system allows for the derivation of fully analytical results for synchronization conditions. In contrast, analysis at the level of phase dynamics, followed by a transformation to a collective basis allows a complete reduction to an all-to-all coupled Kuramoto model with known analytical solutions. We provide analytical and numerical solutions for systems ranging from a few modes to the macroscopic limit…
We present an approach based on a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian to describe the process of measurement by tunneling of a phase qubit state. We derive simple analytical expressions which describe the dynamics of measurement, and compare our results with those experimentally available.
In this work we address systems described by time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians under time-dependent Dyson maps. We shown that when starting from a given time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian which is not itself an observable, an infinite chain of gauge linked time-dependent non-observable non-Hermitian Hamiltonians can be derived from it. The matrix elements of the observables associated with all these non observable Hamiltonians are, however, all linked to each other, and in the particular case where global gauges exist, these matrix elements becomes all identical to each other. In…
The exceptional points of non-Hermitian systems, where $n$ different energy eigenstates merge into an identical one, have many intriguing properties that have no counterparts in Hermitian systems. In particular, the $ε^{1/n}$ dependence of the energy level splitting on a perturbative parameter $ε$ near an $n$-th order exceptional point stimulates the idea of metrology with arbitrarily high sensitivity, since the susceptibility $dε^{1/n}/dε$ diverges at the exceptional point. Here we theoretically study the sensitivity of parameter estimation near the exceptional points, using the exact formali…
We systematically investigate the non-Hermitian generalisations of the Landau-Zener (LZ) transition and the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) interferometry. The LZ transition probabilities, or band populations, are calculated for a generic non-Hermitian model and their asymptotic behaviour analysed. We then focus on non-Hermitian systems with a real adiabatic parameter and study the LZS interferometry formed out of two identical avoided level crossings. Four distinctive cases of interferometry are identified and the analytic formulae for the transition probabilities are calculated for each case.…
We analyze the zero energy solutions, of a two dimensional system which undergoes a non-radial symmetric, complex potential V(r,$ϕ$). By virtue of the coherent states concept, the localized states are constructed, and the consequences of the imaginary part of the potential are found both analytically and schematically.
Exceptional points, the spectral degeneracy points in the complex parameter space, are fundamental to non-Hermitian quantum systems. The dynamics of non-Hermitian systems in the presence of exceptional points differ significantly from those of Hermitian ones. Here we investigate non-adiabatic transitions in non-Hermitian $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric systems, in which the exceptional points are driven through at finite speed which are quadratic or cubic functions of time. We identity different transmission dynamics separated by exceptional points, and derive analytical approximate formula…
Non-Hermitian extensions of the Anderson and Aubry-André-Harper models are attracting a considerable interest as platforms to study localization phenomena, metal-insulator and topological phase transitions in disordered non-Hermitian systems. Most of available studies, however, resort to numerical results, while few analytical and rigorous results are available owing to the extraordinary complexity of the underlying problem. Here we consider a parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric extension of the Aubry-André-Harper model, undergoing a topological metal-insulator phase transition, and provide…
A non-Hermitian interferometer can realize asymmetric transmission in the presence of imaginary potential and magnetic flux. Here, we propose a non-Hermitian dimer with an unequal hopping rate by an interferometer-like cluster in the framework of tight-binding model. The intriguing features of this design are the wave-vector independence and unidirectionality of scattering, which amplifies wavepacket without distortion and absorbs incoherent wave without reflection. The absorption relates to the system spectral singularities, the dynamical behaviors of the spectral singularities are also inves…
By using two-component approach to the one-dimensional effective mass Dirac equation bound states are investigated under the effect of two new non-PT-symmetric, and non-Hermitian, exponential type potentials. It is observed that the Dirac equation can be mapped into a Schrödinger-like equation by rescaling one of the two Dirac wave functions in the case of the position dependent mass. The energy levels, and the corresponding Dirac eigenfunctions are found analytically.
The absolute value squared of the probability amplitude corresponding to the overlap of an initial state with a continuum wave solution to the Schrödinger equation of the problem, has the physical interpretation provided by the Born rule. Here, it is shown that for an open quantum system, the above probability may be written in an exact analytical fashion as an expansion in terms of the non-Hermitian resonance (quasinormal) states and complex poles to the problem which provides an underlying non-Hermitian character of the Born rule.
We extend the application of the techniques developed within the framework of the pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics to study a unitary quantum system described by an imaginary PT-symmetric potential v(x) having a continuous real spectrum. For this potential that has recently been used, in the context of optical potentials, for modelling the propagation of electromagnetic waves travelling in a wave guide half and half filed with gain and absorbing media, we give a perturbative construction of the physical Hilbert space, observables, localized states, and the equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian. I…
We investigate in this paper time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, which consist respectively of SU(1,1) and SU(2) generators. The former Hamiltonian is PT symmetric but the latter one is not. A time-dependent non-unitary operator is proposed to construct the non-Hermitian invariant, which is verified as pseudo-Hermitian with real eigenvalues. The exact solutions are obtained in terms of the eigenstates of the pseudo-Hermitian invariant operator for both the SU(1,1)and SU(2)systems in a unified manner. Then, we derive the LR phase, which can be separated to the dynamic phase and the geome…
Examples of non-hermitian quantum systems admitting topological insulator phase are presented in one, two and three space dimensions. All of these non-hermitian Hamiltonians have entirely real bulk eigenvalues and unitarity is maintained with the introduction of appropriate inner-products in the corresponding Hilbert spaces. The topological invariant characterizing a particular phase is shown to be identical for a non-hermitian Hamiltonian and its hermitian counterpart, to which it is related through a non-unitary similarity transformation. A classification scheme for topological insulator pha…
We find that a broken PT-symmetry operator when interacts with suitable Hermitian operator, new system becomes completely un-broken PT symmetry. Further on varying the contribution of Hermiticity one can delay or control the broken PT-symmetry. Further beyond the critical contribution ,the broken PT symmetry becomes unbroken in nature. Analytical as well as numerical models have been presented.
We study quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian XY and transverse-field Ising spin chains, in which the non-Hermiticity arises from the imaginary magnetic field. Analytical and numerical results show that at exceptional points, coalescing eigenstates in these models close to W, distant Bell and GHZ states, which can be steady states in dynamical preparation scheme proposed by T. D. Lee et. al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 250401 (2014)). Selecting proper initial states, numerical simulations demonstrate the time evolution process to the target states with high fidelity.
We numerically investigate topological phases of periodic lattice systems in tight-binding description under the influence of dissipation. The effects of dissipation are effectively described by $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potentials. In this framework we develop a general numerical gauge smoothing procedure to calculate complex Berry phases from the biorthogonal basis of the system's non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Further, we apply this method to a one-dimensional $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric lattice system and verify our numerical results by an analytical calculation.
We study the possibility of asymmetric transmission induced by a non-Hermitian scattering center embedded in a one-dimensional waveguide, motivated by the aim of realizing quantum diode in a non-Hermitian system. It is shown that a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric non-Hermitian scattering center always has symmetric transmission although the dynamics within the isolated center can be unidirectional, especially at its exceptional point. We propose a concrete scheme based on a flux-controlled non-Hermitian scattering center, which comprises a non-Hermitian triangular ring threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm fl…
We propose an application of a parity-time symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model by embedded it in a two-dimensional square lattice tube. The coalescence state at the exceptional point of non-Hermitian SSH model is chiral and selectively controls helical transport and amplification. Two typical helicity-dependent scattering dynamics are observed. If the incidence has an identical helicity with the embedded non-Hermitian SSH model, we observe a perfect transmission without reflection. However, if the incidence has an opposite helicity with the embedded non-Hermitian SSH model…
The non-Hermitian models, which are symmetric under parity (P) and time-reversal (T) operators, are the cornerstone for the fabrication of new ultra-sensitive optoelectronic devices. However, providing the gain in such systems usually demands precise contorol of nonlinear processes, limiting their application. In this paper, to bypass this obstacle, we introduce a class of time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (not necessarily Floquet) that can describe a two-level system with temporally modulated on-site potential and couplings. We show that implementing an appropriate non-Unitary gauge t…
We investigate the Hermitian and the non-Hermitian dynamics of the mode entanglement in two identical optical cavities coupled by a chiral mirror. By employing the non-Hermitian quantum evolution, we calculate the logarithmic negativity measure of entanglement for initially Fock, coherent and squeezed states, separately. We verify the non-conservation of mean spin for the initially coherent and squeezed states when the coupling is non-reciprocal and report the associated spin noise for each case. We examine the effects of non-conserved symmetries on the mode correlations and determine the degr…
We study the geometric phase for the ground state of a generalized one-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum XY model, which has transverse-field-dependent intrinsic rotation-time reversal symmetry. Based on the exact solution, this model is shown to have full real spectrum in multiple regions for the finite size system. The result indicates that the phase diagram or exceptional boundary, which separates the unbroken and broken symmetry regions corresponds to the divergence of the Berry curvature. The scaling behaviors of the groundstate energy and Berry curvature are obtained in an analytical man…
We analyze a class of non-Hermitian quadratic Hamiltonians, which are of the form $ H = {\cal{A}}^{\dagger} {\cal{A}} + α{\cal{A}} ^2 + β{\cal{A}}^{\dagger 2} $, where $ α, β$ are real constants, with $ α\neq β$, and ${\cal{A}}^{\dagger}$ and ${\cal{A}}$ are generalized creation and annihilation operators. Thus these Hamiltonians may be classified as generalized Swanson models. It is shown that the eigenenergies are real for a certain range of values of the parameters. A similarity transformation $ρ$, mapping the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian $H$ to a Hermitian one $h$, is also obtained. It is sho…
We investigate the dynamics of the out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) via a non-Hermitian extension of the quantum kicked rotor model, where the kicking potential satisfies $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. The spontaneous $\cal{PT}$-symmetry breaking emerges when the strength of the imaginary part of the kicking potential exceeds a threshold value. We find, both analytically and numerically, that in the broken phase of $\cal{PT}$ symmetry, the OTOCs rapidly saturate with time evolution. Interestingly, the late-time saturation value scales as a pow-law in the system size. The mechanism of such sca…
Non-Hermitian systems exhibit many peculiar dynamic behaviors which never showed up in Hermitian systems. The existence of spectral singularity (SS) for a non-Hermitian scattering center provides a lasing mechanism in the context of quantum mechanics. In this paper we show exactly that a finite system at exceptional point (EP) can also provide an alternative laser solution. We investigate the dynamics of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model around EP, based on the analysis of parity-time (PT ) and chiral-time (CT ) symmetries of the Hamiltonian. In contrast to the SS lasing mechanism…
In this paper, we study how to apply a periodic driving field to control stable spin tunneling in a non-Hermitian spin-orbit coupled bosonic double-well system. By means of a high-frequency approximation, we obtain the analytical Floquet solutions and their associated quasienergies and thus construct the general non-Floquet solutions of the dissipative spin-orbit coupled bosonic system. Based on detailed analysis of the Floquet quasienergy spectrum, the profound effect of system parameters and the periodic driving field on the stability of spin-dependent tunneling is investigated analytically …
We study theoretically quantum states of two repelling spinless particles in a one-dimensional tight-binding model with simple periodic lattice and open boundary conditions. We demonstrate, that when the particles are not identical, their interaction drives nontrivial correlated two-particle states, such as bound states, edge states as well as interaction-induced flat bands. Specifically, the center-of-mass and relative motions of two particles become coupled in a topologically nontrivial way. By virtue of the non-Hermitian skin effect the localization of the center of mass enforces the locali…
We study the effect of PT-symmetric complex potentials on the transport properties of non-Hermitian systems, which consist of an infinite linear chain and two side-coupled defect points with PT-symmetric complex on-site potentials. By analytically solving the scattering problem of two typical models, which display standard Fano resonances in the absence of non-Hermitian terms, we find that the PT-symmetric imaginary potentials can lead to some pronounced effects on transport properties of our systems, including changes from the perfect reflection to perfect transmission, and rich behaviors for…
Recently, Zhong et al. [Phys. Rev. A 87, 022337(2013)] investigated the dynamics of quantum Fisher information (QFI) in the presence of decoherence. We here reform their results and propose two schemes to enhance and preserve the QFIs for a qubit system subjected to a decoherence noisy environment by applying $\textit{non-Hermitian}$ operators process. The proposed schemes are related to the $\textit{prior}$ (or the $\textit{post}$ ) non-Hermitian operator process corresponding to before (or after) the interest system suffers from decoherence, respectively. Resorting to the Bloch sphere repres…
Recently, it has become clear that non-hermitian phenomena can be observed not only in open quantum systems experiencing gain and loss but also in equilibrium single-particle properties of strongly correlated systems. However, the circumstances and requirements for the emergence of non-hermitian phenomena in each field are entirely different. While the implementation of postselection is a significant obstacle to observe non-hermitian phenomena in open quantum systems, it is unnecessary in strongly correlated systems. Until now, a relation between both descriptions of non-hermitian phenomena ha…
A non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that has an unbroken PT symmetry can be converted by means of a similarity transformation to a physically equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian. This raises the following question: In which form of the quantum theory, the non-Hermitian or the Hermitian one, is it easier to perform calculations? This paper compares both forms of a non-Hermitian $ix^3$ quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian and demonstrates that it is much harder to perform calculations in the Hermitian theory because the perturbation series for the Hermitian Hamiltonian is constructed from divergent Feynman graph…
We derive a new time-dependent Schrödinger equation(TDSE) for quantum models with non-hermitian Hamiltonian. Within our theory, the TDSE is symmetric in the two Hilbert spaces spanned by the left and the right eigenstates, respectively. The physical quantities are also identical in these two spaces. Based on this TDSE, we show that exchanging two quasi-particles in a non-hermitian model can generate arbitrary geometric phase. The system can also violate the Lieb-Robinson bound in non-relativistic quantum mechanics so that an action in one place will immediately cause a change in the distance. …
In the global framework of quantum theory the individual quantum systems seem clearly separated into two families with the respective manifestly Hermitian and hiddenly Hermitian operators of their Hamiltonian. In the light of certain preliminary studies these two families seem to have an empty overlap. In this paper we demonstrate that it is not so. We are going to show that whenever the interaction potentials are chosen weakly nonlocal, the separation of the two families may disappear. The overlaps alias interfaces between the Hermitian and non-Hermitian descriptions of the unitarily evolving…
