Recently, it has become clear that non-hermitian phenomena can be observed not only in open quantum systems experiencing gain and loss but also in equilibrium single-particle properties of strongly correlated systems. However, the circumstances and requirements for the emergence of non-hermitian phenomena in each field are entirely different. While the implementation of postselection is a significant obstacle to observe non-hermitian phenomena in open quantum systems, it is unnecessary in strongly correlated systems.
Until now, a relation between both descriptions of non-hermitian phenomena has not been revealed. In this paper, we close this gap and demonstrate that the non-hermitian Hamiltonians emerging in both fields are identical, and we clarify the conditions for the emergence of a non-hermitian Hamiltonian in strongly correlated materials. Using this knowledge, we propose a method to analyze non-hermitian properties without the necessity of postselection by studying specific response functions of open quantum systems and strongly correlated systems.
We study a non-Hermitian generalization of strongly correlated quantum systems in which the transfer energy of electrons is asymmetric. It is known that a non-Hermitian critical point is equal to the inverse localization length of a Hermitian non-interacting random electron system. We here conjecture that we can obtain in the same way the correlation length of a Hermitian interacting non-random system. We confirm the conjecture using exact solutions and numerical finite-size data of the Hubbard model and the antiferromagnetic XXZ model in one dimension.
We analyze a correlated system in equilibrium with special emphasis on non-Hermitian topology inducing a skin effect. The pseudo-spectrum, computed by the real-space dynamical mean-field theory, elucidates that additional pseudo-eigenstates emerge for the open boundary condition in contrast to the dependence of the density of states on the boundary condition. We further discuss how the line-gap topology, another type of non-Hermitian topology, affects the pseudo-spectrum. Our numerical simulation clarifies that while the damping of the quasi-particles induces the non-trivial point-gap topology…
There is a common belief in the condensed matter community that bulk quantities become insensitive to the boundary condition in the infinite-volume limit. Here we reconsider this statement in terms of recent arguments of non-Hermitian skin effects, -strong dependence of spectra on boundary conditions for the non-Hermitian Hamiltonians-, in the traditional Green's function formalism. We find the criterion for quantities to be sensitive/insensitive against the boundary condition in Hermitian correlated/disordered systems, which is characterized by the residue theorem. We also discuss the uncerta…
We study a non-Hermitian generalization of quantum systems in which an imaginary vector potential is added to the momentum operator. In the tight-binding approximation, we make the hopping energy asymmetric in the Hermitian Hamiltonian. In a previous article, we conjectured that the non-Hermitian critical point where the energy gap vanishes is equal to the inverse correlation length of the Hermitian system and we confirmed the conjecture for two exactly solvable systems. In this article, we present more evidence for the conjecture. We also argue the basis of our conjecture by noting the disper…
Emergence of exceptional points in two dimensions is one of the remarkable phenomena in non-Hermitian systems. We here elucidate the impacts of symmetry on the non-Hermitian physics. Specifically, we analyze chiral symmetric correlated systems in equilibrium where the non-Hermitian phenomena are induced by the finite lifetime of quasi-particles. Intriguingly, our analysis reveals that the combination of symmetry and non-Hermiticity results in novel topological degeneracies of energy bands which we call symmetry-protected exceptional rings (SPERs). We observe the emergence of SPERs by analyzing…
Quasi-particles described by Green's functions of equilibrium systems exhibit non-Hermitian topological phenomena because of their finite lifetime. This non-Hermitian perspective on equilibrium systems provides new insights into correlated systems and attracts much interest because of its potential to solve open questions in correlated compounds. In this paper, we provide a concise review of the non-Hermitian topological band structures for quantum many-body systems in equilibrium as well as their classification.
Non-Hermiticity greatly expands existing physical laws beyond the Hermitian framework, revealing various novel phenomena with unique properties. Up to now, most exotic nonHermitian effects, such as exceptional points and non-Hermitian skin effects, are discovered in single-particle systems. The interplay between non-Hermitian and manybody correlation is expected to be a more fascinating but much less explored area. Due to the complexity of the problem, current researches in this field mainly stay at the theoretical level. The experimental observation of predicted non-Hermitian manybody phases …
We analyze a diamond-lattice Hubbard model with the spatially modulated Hubbard interaction. Our dynamical mean-field analysis with special emphasis on non-Hermitian properties elucidates that the gapless nodal line changes into symmetry-protected exceptional torus (SPET) at the Fermi level enclosing the three-dimensional open Fermi surface, which is unique to non-Hermitian physics with chiral symmetry. Furthermore, we also elucidate the effects of the SPETs on the magnetic response; our results based on the random-phase approximation combined with the the dynamical mean-field theory shows tha…
In spite of extensive works on the non-Hermitian topology, correlations effects remain crucial questions. We hereby analyze correlated non-Hermitian systems with special emphasis on the one-dimensional point-gap topology. Specifically, our analysis elucidates that correlations result in reduction of the topological classification $\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{Z}$ for systems of one synthetic dimension with charge $\mathrm{U(1)}$ symmetry and spin-parity symmetry. Furthermore, we analyze an extended Hatano-Nelson chain which exhibits striking correlation effects; correlations destroy…
The cooperation between non-Hermiticity and interaction brings about a lot of counterintuitive behaviors, which are impossible to exist in the framework of the Hermitian system. We study the effect of a non-Hermitian impurity on the Hubbard model in the context of $η$ symmetry. We show that the non-Hermitian Hubbard Hamiltonian can respect a full real spectrum even if a local non-Hermitian impurity is applied to. The balance between dissipation of single fermion and on-site pair fluctuation results in a highest-order coalescing state with off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO). Based on the cha…
We study inter-chain pair tunnelling dynamics based on an exact two-particle solution for a two-leg ladder. We show that the Hermitian Hamiltonian shares a common two-particle eigenstate with a corresponding non-Hermitian Hubbard Hamiltonian in which the non-Hermiticity arises from an on-site interaction of imaginary strength. Our results provides that the dynamic processes of two-particle collision and across-legs tunnelling are well described by the effective non-Hermitian Hubbard Hamiltonian based on the eigenstate equivalence. We also find that any common eigenstate is always associated wi…

Despite previous extensive analysis of open quantum systems described by the Lindblad equation, it is unclear whether correlated topological states, such as fractional quantum Hall states, are maintained even in the presence of the jump term. In this paper, we introduce the pseudo-spin Chern number of the Liouvillian which is computed by twisting the boundary conditions only for one of the subspaces of the doubled Hilbert space. The existence of such a topological invariant elucidates that the topological properties remain unchanged even in the presence of the jump term which does not close th…
We study interaction-induced Mott insulators, and their topological properties in a 1D non-Hermitian strongly-correlated spinful fermionic superlattice system with either nonreciprocal hopping or complex-valued interaction. For the nonreciprocal hopping case, the low-energy neutral excitation spectrum is sensitive to boundary conditions, which is a manifestation of the non-Hermitian skin effect. However, unlike the single-particle case, particle density of strongly correlated system does not suffer from the non-Hermitian skin effect due to the Pauli exclusion principle and repulsive interactio…
We propose a new method of solving a class of mean-field (MF) models, which is based on the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) principle with additional constraints included. Next, we show equivalence of our method when applied to the Gutzwiller approximation (GA), with the mean-field slave-boson (SB) formalism (on the example of the single-band Hubbard model). This equivalence provides thus an alternative justification of the results obtained within the SB approach which, however, contains ad hoc assumptions to position it in agreement with GA. Our approach implies that all predictions of the MF SB met…
Strong, non-perturbative interactions often lead to new exciting physics, as epitomized by emergent anyons from the Fractional Quantum Hall effect. Within the actively investigated domain of non-Hermitian physics, we discover a new family of states known as non-Hermitian skin clusters. Taking distinct forms as Vertex, Topological, Interface, Extended, and Localized skin clusters, they generically originate from asymmetric correlated hoppings on a lattice, in the strongly interacting limit with quenched single-body energetics. Distinct from non-Hermitian skin modes which accumulate at boundarie…
The introduction of non-Hermiticity has greatly enriched the research field of traditional condensed matter physics, and eventually led to a series of discoveries of exotic phenomena. We investigate the effect of non-Hermitian imaginary hoppings on the attractive Hubbard model. The exact bound-pair solution shows that the electron-electron correlation suppresses the non-Hermiticity, resulting in off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) ground state. In a large negative $U $ limit, the ODLRO ground state corresponds to $η$-spin ferromagnetic states. We also study the system with mixed hopping conf…
We find that heavy fermion systems can have bulk "Fermi arcs", with the use of the non-Hermitian topological theory. In an interacting electron system, the microscopic many-body Hamiltonian is Hermitian, but the one-body quasiparticle Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian due to the finite quasiparticle lifetime. We focus on heavy electron systems as a stage of finite lifetime quasiparticles with two lifetimes, since quasiparticle lifetimes for f-electrons and c-electrons should be different. Two lifetimes induce exceptional points (EPs) of the non-Hermitian quasiparticle Hamiltonian matrix in momentum…
We analyze a zero-dimensional correlated system with special emphasis on the non-Hermitian point-gap topology protected by chiral symmetry. Our analysis elucidates that correlations destroy an exceptional point on a topological transition point which separates two topological phases in the non-interacting case; one of them is characterized by the zero-th Chern number $N_{0\mathrm{Ch}}=0$, and the other is characterized by $N_{0\mathrm{Ch}}=2$. This fact implies that correlations allow to continuously connect the two distinct topological phases in the non-interacting case without closing the po…
Correlated materials have appeared as an arena to study non-Hermitian effects as typically exemplified by the emergence of exceptional points. We show here that topological Kondo insulators are an ideal platform for studying these phenomena due to strong correlations and surface states exhibiting a nontrivial spin texture. Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate the emergence of exceptional points in the single-particle Green's function on the surface of the material while the bulk is still insulating. We reveal how quasiparticle states with long lifetimes are created on the surface by non…
We study random quantum circuits and their rate of producing bipartite entanglement, specifically with respect to the choice of 2-qubit gates and the order (protocol) in which these are applied. The problem is mapped to a Markovian process and proved that there are large spectral equivalence classes -- different configurations have the same spectrum. Optimal gates and the protocol that generate entanglement with the fastest theoretically possible rate are identified. Relaxation towards the asymptotic thermal entanglement proceeds via a series of phase transitions in the local relaxation rate, …
It is possible to simulate the dynamics of a single spin-$1/2$ ($\mathsf{PT~}$ symmetric) system by conveniently embedding it into a subspace of a larger Hilbert space with unitary dynamics. Our goal is to formulate a many body generalization of this idea i.e., embedding many body non-Hermitian dynamics. As a first step in this direction, we investigate embedding of "$N$" non-interacting spin-$1/2$ ($\mathsf{PT~}$ symmetric) degrees of freedom, thereby unfolding the complex nature of such an embedding procedure. It turns out that the resulting Hermitian Hamiltonian represents a cluster of $N+1…
We investigate the quantization of the complex-valued Berry phases in non-Hermitian quantum systems with certain generalized symmetries. In Hermitian quantum systems, the real-valued Berry phase is known to be quantized in the presence of certain symmetries, and this quantized Berry phase can be regarded as a topological order parameter for gapped quantum systems. In this paper, on the other hand, we establish that the complex Berry phase is also quantized in the systems described by a family of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Let $H(θ)$ be a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian parameterized by $θ$. Suppose…
We present a generalized definition of subspace occupancy matrices in ab initio methods for strongly correlated materials, such as DFT+U and DFT+DMFT, which is appropriate to the case of nonorthogonal projector functions. By enforcing the tensorial consistency of all matrix operations, we are led to a subspace projection operator for which the occupancy matrix is tensorial and accumulates only contributions which are local to the correlated subspace at hand. For DFT+U in particular, the resulting contributions to the potential and ionic forces are automatically Hermitian, without resort to sym…
