Despite previous extensive analysis of open quantum systems described by the Lindblad equation, it is unclear whether correlated topological states, such as fractional quantum Hall states, are maintained even in the presence of the jump term. In this paper, we introduce the pseudo-spin Chern number of the Liouvillian which is computed by twisting the boundary conditions only for one of the subspaces of the doubled Hilbert space. The existence of such a topological invariant elucidates that the topological properties remain unchanged even in the presence of the jump term which does not close the gap of the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (obtained by neglecting the jump term). In other words, the topological properties are encoded into an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian rather than the full Liouvillian. This is particularly useful when the jump term can be written as a strictly block-upper (-lower) triangular matrix in the doubled Hilbert space, in which case the presence or absence of the jump term does not affect the spectrum of the Liouvillian. With the pseudo-spin Chern number, we address the characterization of fractional quantum Hall states with two-body loss but without gain, elucidating that the topology of the non-Hermitian fractional quantum Hall states is preserved even in the presence of the jump term. This numerical result also supports the use of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian which significantly reduces the numerical cost. Similar topological invariants can be extended to treat correlated topological states for other spatial dimensions and symmetry (e.g., one-dimensional open quantum systems with inversion symmetry), indicating the high versatility of our approach.
The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, a condensed matter analog of the parity anomaly, is characterized by a quantized Hall conductivity in the absence of an external magnetic field. However, it has been recently shown that, even in the presence of Landau levels, the QAH effect can be distinguished from the conventional quantum Hall (QH) effect due to the parity anomaly. As a signature of this effect, we predicted coexistent counterpropagating QAH and QH edge states. In the present work, we generalize these findings to QAH insulators with broken particle-hole symmetry. In particular, we der…

We consider a time reversal symmetry (TRS) broken Kane-Mele model superimposed with Haldane model and chart out the phase diagram using spin Chern number to investigate the fate of quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) and quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) phases. Interestingly, in addition to QSHI and QAHI phase, the phase diagram unveils quantum anomalous spin Hall insulator (QASHI) phase where only one spin sector is topological. We also find multicritical points where three / four topological phase boundaries coalesce. These topological phases are protected by an effective TRS and a com…
Quantum spin Hall (QSH) state of matter is usually considered to be protected by time-reversal (TR) symmetry. We investigate the fate of the QSH effect in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and an exchange field, which break both inversion and TR symmetries. It is found that the QSH state characterized by nonzero spin Chern numbers $C_{\pm}=\pm 1$ persists when the TR symmetry is broken. A topological phase transition from the TR symmetry-broken QSH phase to a quantum anomalous Hall phase occurs at a critical exchange field, where the bulk band gap just closes. It is also shown tha…
We report on the fate of the quantum Hall effect in graphene under strong laser illumination. By using Floquet theory combined with both a low energy description and full tight-binding models, we clarify the selection rules, the quasienergy band structure, as well as their connection with the two-terminal and multi-terminal conductance in a device setup as relevant for experiments. We show that the well-known dynamical gaps that appear in the Floquet spectrum at $\pm\,\hbarΩ/2$ lead to a switch-off of the quantum Hall edge transport for different edge terminations except for the armchair one, …
The intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 provides an ideal platform for exploring exotic topological quantum phenomena. Recently, the Chern insulator and axion insulator phases have been realized in few-layer MnBi2Te4 devices at low magnetic field regime. However, the fate of MnBi2Te4 in high magnetic field has never been explored in experiment. In this work, we report transport studies of exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes in pulsed magnetic fields up to 61.5 T. In the high-field limit, the Chern insulator phase with Chern number C = -1 evolves into a robust zero Hall resistance…
We consider the electronic analog of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer from quantum optics. In this realistic condensed matter device, single electrons are injected and travel along opposite chiral edge states of the integer quantum Hall effect, colliding at a quantum point contact (QPC). We monitor the fate of the colliding excitations by calculating zero-frequency current correlations at the output of the QPC. In the simpler case of filling factor $ν=1$, we recover the standard result of a dip in the current noise as a function of the time delay between electron injections. For simultaneous …
What is the fate of the ground state of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at very low Landau level filling factors ($ν$) where interaction reigns supreme? An ordered array of electrons, the so-called Wigner crystal, has long been believed to be the answer. It was in fact the search for the elusive Wigner crystal that led to the discovery of an unexpected, incompressible liquid state, namely the fractional quantum Hall state at $ν=1/3$. Understanding the competition between the liquid and solid ground states has since remained an active field of fundamental research. Here we report exper…
The strong topological insulator in 3D is expected to realize a quantized magneto-electric response, the so-called axion response. However, many of the materials predicted to be topological insulators have turned out to be metallic, with bulk Fermi surfaces. Following the result of Bergman et al. (Phys. Rev. B 82, 195417 (2010)) that the helical surface states of the topological insulator persist even when the band structure gap is closed, we explore the fate of the magneto-electric response in such systems. We find a non-quantized magneto-electric coupling remains once a bulk Fermi surface op…
Quantum wells in InAs/GaSb heterostructures can be tuned to a topological regime associated with the quantum spin Hall effect, which arises due to an inverted band gap and hybridized electron and hole states. Here, we investigate electron-hole hybridization and the fate of the quantum spin Hall effect in a quasi one-dimensional geometry, realized in a core-shell-shell nanowire with an insulator core and InAs and GaSb shells. We calculate the band structure for an infinitely long nanowire using $\mathbf{k \cdot p}$ theory within the Kane model and the envelope function approximation, then map t…
We consider the fate of a helical edge state of a spin Hall insulator and its topological transition in presence of a circularly polarized light when coupled to various forms of environments. A Lindblad type equation is developed to determine the fermion occupation of the Floquet bands. We find by using analytical and numerical methods that non-secular terms, corresponding to 2-photon transitions, lead to a mixing of the band occupations, hence the light induced photocurrent is in general not perfectly quantized in the presence of finite coupling to the environment, although deviations are sma…
The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has recently been reported to emerge in magnetically-doped topological insulators. Although its general phenomenology is well established, the microscopic origin is far from being properly understood and controlled. Here we report on a detailed and systematic investigation of transition-metal (TM)-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$. By combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with complementary experimental techniques, i.e., scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), resonant photoemission (resPES), and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we provide a com…
We investigate the influence of the superconducting (S) proximity effect in the quantum Hall (QH) regime by computing the charge conductance flowing through a graphene-based QH/S/QH junction. This situation offers the exciting possibility of studying the fate of topological edge states when they experience tunneling processes through the superconductor. We predict the appearance of conductance peaks at integer values of the Landau level filling factor, as a consequence of the quantum interferences taking place at the junction, and provide a semiclassical analysis allowing for a natural interpr…
