The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, a condensed matter analog of the parity anomaly, is characterized by a quantized Hall conductivity in the absence of an external magnetic field. However, it has been recently shown that, even in the presence of Landau levels, the QAH effect can be distinguished from the conventional quantum Hall (QH) effect due to the parity anomaly. As a signature of this effect, we predicted coexistent counterpropagating QAH and QH edge states. In the present work, we generalize these findings to QAH insulators with broken particle-hole symmetry. In particular, we derive the connection to the spectral asymmetry, which is a topological quantity arising in the context of Dirac-like systems. Moreover, it is shown that, depending on the magnetic field direction, particle-hole asymmetry strengthens or weakens the hybridization of the counterpropagating QH and QAH edge states. Implications for ferro- or paramagnetic topological insulators are derived which paves the way towards identifying signatures of the QAH effect even in external magnetic fields.
Observations of electron-hole asymmetry in transport through graphene devices at high magnetic field challenge prevalent models of the graphene quantum Hall effect. Here, we study this asymmetry both in conventional magnetotransport and in scanning gate microscopy maps measured in an encapsulated graphene constriction. We reveal that the presence of upstream modes and local doping in the vicinity of electrical contacts leads to a totally different picture of topological breakdown for electrons and holes, explaining the observed asymmetry.
We examine effects of inversion asymmetry of a GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As quantum well (QW) on electron-nuclear spin coupling in the fractional quantum Hall (QH) regime. Increasing the QW potential asymmetry at a fixed Landau-level filling factor (nu) with gate voltages suppresses the current-induced nuclear spin polarization in the nu = 2/3 Ising QH ferromagnet, while it significantly enhances the nuclear spin relaxation at general nu. These findings suggest that mixing of different spin states due to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction strongly affects the electron-nuclear spin coupling.
We report the first unambiguous observation of a fractional quantum Hall state in the Landau level of a two-dimensional hole sample at the filling factor $ν=8/3$. We identified this state by a quantized Hall resistance and an activated temperature dependence of the longitudinal resistance and found an energy gap of 40 mK. To our surprise the particle-hole conjugate state at filling factor $ν=7/3$ in our sample does not develop down to 6.9 mK. This observation is contrary to that in electron samples in which the 7/3 state is typically more stable than the 8/3 state. We present evidence that the…
We argue that the dissipative transport in ferromagnetic quantum Hall effect liquids at $ν=2N+1$ is dominated by the thermal activation of pairs consisting of an electron and an antiskyrmion (topological texture which represents a hole with 'screened' exchange interaction), thus manifesting the lack of electron-hole symmetry in quantum Hall ferromagnets. We find that the activation energy of such a pair is not the exchange energy, but is determined by the interplay between the excess Zeeman energy of a skyrmion and the charging energy of its topological texture: $${\cal E}=aε_{\rm Z}^{1/3}E_{\…
The effect of magnetic field on an ultrathin magnetic topological insulator film with structural inversion asymmetry is investigated. We introduce the phase diagram, calculate the Landau-level spectrum analytically and simulate the transport behavior in Landauer-Büttiker formalism. The quantum anomalous Hall phase will survive increasing magnetic field. Due to the two spin polarized zero modes of Landau levels a nontrivial phase similar with quantum spin Hall effect can be induced by magnetic field which is protected by structural inversion symmetry. Some exotic longitudinal and Hall resistanc…
The spin Hall effect in tungsten films has been experimentally studied by using STM-based measurements. These measurements have been performed by using tungsten and iron coated tungsten tips. In the case of tungsten tips, it has been observed that the current flow through the tungsten film results in an appreciable asymmetry in the tunneling current with respect to the change in the polarity of the tunneling voltage. It is reasoned that the cause of this asymmetry is the accumulation of spin polarized electrons on the tungsten film surface due to the spin Hall effect. This asymmetry is not aff…
The fate of integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) at weak magnetic field is studied numerically in the presence of {\it correlated} disorders. We find a systematic {\it float-up} and {\it merging} picture for extended levels on the low-energy side which results in direct transitions from higher-plateau IQHE states to the insulator. Such direct transitions are controlled by a quantum critical point with a {\it universal} scaling form of conductance. The phase diagram is in good agreement with recent experiments. The issue of continuum vs. lattice model is also discussed.
We study the fate of the Kondo effect with one-dimensional conduction baths at very low densities, such that the system explores the bottom of the conduction band. This can involve either finite low densities, or a small number of fixed conduction electrons in a large system, i.e., the limit of large bath sizes can be taken with either fixed small density or with fixed number. We characterize the Kondo physics for such systems through the energy gain due to Kondo coupling, which is a general analog of the Kondo temperature scale, and through real-space profiles of densities and spin-spin corre…
Despite previous extensive analysis of open quantum systems described by the Lindblad equation, it is unclear whether correlated topological states, such as fractional quantum Hall states, are maintained even in the presence of the jump term. In this paper, we introduce the pseudo-spin Chern number of the Liouvillian which is computed by twisting the boundary conditions only for one of the subspaces of the doubled Hilbert space. The existence of such a topological invariant elucidates that the topological properties remain unchanged even in the presence of the jump term which does not close th…
We investigate magnetization dynamics in a spin-Hall oscillator using a direct current measurement as well as conventional microwave spectrum analysis. When the current applies an anti-damping spin-transfer torque, we observe a change in resistance which we ascribe to the excitation of incoherent exchange magnons. A simple model is developed based on the reduction of the effective saturation magnetization, quantitatively explaining the data. The observed phenomena highlight the importance of exchange magnons on the operation of spin-Hall oscillators.
A giant asymmetry in the magnetoresistance was revealed in high-mobility, two-dimensional electron gas on a cylindrical surface. The longitudinal resistance along the magnetic-field gradient impressed by the surface curvature was found to vanish if measured along one of the edges of the curved Hall bar. If the external magnetic field is reversed, then the longitudinal resistance vanishes at the opposite edge of the Hall bar. This asymmetry is analyzed quantitatively in terms of the Landauer-Buettiker formalism.
We report on our theoretical investigation considering the widths of quantized Hall plateaus (QHPs) depending on the density asymmetry induced by the large current within the out-of-linear response regime. We solve the Schrodinger equation within the Hartree type mean field approximation using Thomas Fermi Poisson nonlinear screening theory. We observe that the two dimensional electron system splits into compressible and incompressible regions for certain magnetic field intervals, where the Hall resistance is quantized and the longitudinal resistance vanishes, if an external current is imposed…
Measurements of switching via spin-orbit coupling (SOC) mechanisms are discussed for a pair of inverted Pt/Co/Pt stacks with asymmetrical Pt thicknesses. Taking into account the planar Hall effect contribution, effective fields of spin-orbit torques (SOT) are evaluated using lock-in measurements of the first and second harmonics of the Hall voltage. Reversing the stack structure leads to significant asymmetries in the switching behavior, including clear evidence of a nonlinear current dependence of the transverse effective field. Our results demonstrate potentially complex interplay in devices…
The quantum Hall effect is investigated in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas on the surface of a cylinder. The novel topology leads to a spatially varying filling factor along the current path. The resulting inhomogeneous current-density distribution gives rise to additional features in the magneto-transport, such as resistance asymmetry and modified longitudinal resistances. We experimentally demonstrate that the asymmetry relations satisfied in the integer filling factor regime are valid also in the transition regime to non-integer filling factors, thereby suggesting a more genera…
We report on the fate of the quantum Hall effect in graphene under strong laser illumination. By using Floquet theory combined with both a low energy description and full tight-binding models, we clarify the selection rules, the quasienergy band structure, as well as their connection with the two-terminal and multi-terminal conductance in a device setup as relevant for experiments. We show that the well-known dynamical gaps that appear in the Floquet spectrum at $\pm\,\hbarΩ/2$ lead to a switch-off of the quantum Hall edge transport for different edge terminations except for the armchair one, …
We report on theoretical investigations of scattering asymmetry vs. incidence of carriers through exchange barriers and magnetic tunnel junctions made of semiconductors involving spin-orbit interaction. By an analytical 2?2 spin model, we show that, when Dresselhaus interaction is included in the conduction band of antiparallel magnetized electrodes, the electrons can undergo a large difference of transmission depending on the sign of their incident in-plane wavevector. In particular, the transmission is fully quenched at some points of the Brillouin zone for specific in-plane wavevectors and …
The helical Dirac states on the surface of a topological insulator are protected by topology and display significant particle-hole asymmetry. This asymmetry arises from a subdominant Schrödinger type contribution to the Hamiltonian which provides a small perturbation to a dominant Dirac contribution. This changes the Landau levels energies in an external magnetic field ($B$) and provides modifications to the usual relativistic optical matrix elements. Nevertheless we find that the relativistic quantization of the Hall plateaux remains even when the ratio of the Schrödinger ($E_0$) to Dirac ($E…
The conductivity and Hall effect were measured in CVD-grown monolayer graphene as a function of the gate voltage, $V_{g}$, at temperatures down to $T$ = 2 K and in magnetic fields up to $B$ = 8 T. The minimal conductivity was observed at positive $V_{g}$ which shows the position of the charge neutrality point, $V_{NP}$. With decreasing $T$, $V_{NP}$ first decreases, but stop to decrease at low $T$. Hysteresis of conductivity shows similar behavior: it decreases with decreasing $T$ and disappears at low $T$. A significant asymmetry was observed at low density of charge carriers $|n|=(n,p)$: mob…
Motivated by recent experimental findings, we study transport in a simple phenomenological model of a quantum Hall edge system with a gate-voltage controlled constriction lowering the local filling factor. The current backscattered from the constriction is seen to arise from the matching of the properties of the edge-current excitations in the constriction ($ν_{2}$) and bulk ($ν_{1}$) regions. We develop a hydrodynamic theory for bosonic edge modes inspired by this model, finding that a competition between two tunneling process, related by a quasiparticle-quasihole symmetry, determines the fat…
A peculiar feature of the majority of three dimensional topological insulator surface states studied experimentally thus far, namely their particle-hole asymmetry, makes quantum oscillations (Shubnikov de Haas and de Haas van Alphen oscillations) in these materials particularly rich. I show that this peculiarity can be exploited to measure the Chern number, and detect topological phase transitions in topological insulator surface states from the quantum spin Hall phase to the quantum anomalous Hall phase. I consider the behaviour of quantum oscillations in topological insulator thin film surfa…
In this work, a quantum dot that is defined asymmetrically by electrostatic means induced on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure is investigated to unravel the effect of geometric constrains on the formation of spin droplets under quantised Hall conditions. The incompressibility of exciting nu = 5/2 state is explored by solving the Schrodinger equation within spin density functional theory, where the confinement potential is obtained self-consistently utilising the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Our numerical investigations show that the spatial distribution of the nu = 2 incompressible strips and elec…
Patterned two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) systems into micrometer Hall bars can be used as Hall magnetosensors to provide detailed information on the magnetic field distribution. In this way, ballistic Hall probes have already been studied and used successfully. Here, the response function of a Hall sensor is determined in the diffusive regime, which allows this device to be used as a magnetosensor for the determination of inhomogeneous magnetic field distribtutions. Furthermore, the influence of the geometry of the Hall bar on this response function, such as circular corners and asymmetry…
Josephson junctions based on three-dimensional topological insulators offer intriguing possibilities to realize unconventional $p$-wave pairing and Majorana modes. Here, we provide a detailed study of the effect of a uniform magnetization in the normal region: We show how the interplay between the spin-momentum locking of the topological insulator and an in-plane magnetization parallel to the direction of phase bias leads to an asymmetry of the Andreev spectrum with respect to transverse momenta. If sufficiently large, this asymmetry induces a transition from a regime of gapless, counterpropag…
Quantum spin Hall (QSH) state of matter is usually considered to be protected by time-reversal (TR) symmetry. We investigate the fate of the QSH effect in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and an exchange field, which break both inversion and TR symmetries. It is found that the QSH state characterized by nonzero spin Chern numbers $C_{\pm}=\pm 1$ persists when the TR symmetry is broken. A topological phase transition from the TR symmetry-broken QSH phase to a quantum anomalous Hall phase occurs at a critical exchange field, where the bulk band gap just closes. It is also shown tha…
Nonlinear transport coefficients do not obey, in general, reciprocity relations. We here discuss the magnetic-field asymmetries that arise in thermoelectric and heat transport of mesoscopic systems. Based on a scattering theory of weakly nonlinear transport, we analyze the leading-order symmetry parameters in terms of the screening potential response to either voltage or temperature shifts. We apply our general results to a quantum Hall antidot system. Interestingly, we find that certain symmetry parameters show a dependence on the measurement configuration.
We investigate departures of the Onsager relations in the nonlinear regime of electronic transport through mesoscopic systems. We show that the nonlinear current--voltage characteristic is not an even function of the magnetic field due only to the magnetic-field dependence of the screening potential within the conductor. We illustrate this result for two types of conductors: A quantum Hall bar with an antidot and a chaotic cavity connected to quantum point contacts. For the chaotic cavity we obtain through random matrix theory an asymmetry in the fluctuations of the nonlinear conductance that …
We investigate the relationship between the quantum Hall extended states and the apparent B=0 `metal'-insulator transition in extremely low density, high quality two-dimensional n-GaAs systems (μ_{peak} ~ 2 x 10^7 cm^2/Vs). The combination of small effective mass and high quality allow us to resolve the continued floating up in energy of the extended states down to very low magnetic fields, B=0.015T, despite an apparent `metal'-insulator transition at B = 0. We present a modified global phase diagram which brings together conflicting data in the literature from different material systems, and …
We consider the electronic analog of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer from quantum optics. In this realistic condensed matter device, single electrons are injected and travel along opposite chiral edge states of the integer quantum Hall effect, colliding at a quantum point contact (QPC). We monitor the fate of the colliding excitations by calculating zero-frequency current correlations at the output of the QPC. In the simpler case of filling factor $ν=1$, we recover the standard result of a dip in the current noise as a function of the time delay between electron injections. For simultaneous …
Experimental and theoretical investigations on the integer quantized Hall effect in gate defined narrow Hall bars are presented. At low electron mobility the classical (high temperature) Hall resistance line RH(B) cuts through the center of all Hall plateaus. In contrast, for our high mobility samples the intersection point, at even filling factors ν= 2; 4 ..., is clearly shifted towards larger magnetic fields B. This asymmetry is in good agreement with predictions of the screening theory, i. e. taking Coulomb interaction into account. The observed effect is directly related to the formation o…
With the recent observation of graphene-like Landau levels at the surface of topological insulators, the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effect, which is a fundamental signature of strong correlations, has become of interest. Some experiments have reported intra-Landau level structure that is suggestive of fractional quantum Hall effect. This paper discusses the feasibility of fractional quantum Hall effect from a theoretical perspective, and argues that while this effect should occur, ideally, in the $n=0$ and $|n|=1$ Landau levels, it is ruled out in higher $|n|$ Landau levels. Unlike…
We investigate the effect of a high frequency electromagnetic field with both of circularly and linearly polarization, on the emergence of quantum phases on thin topological insulators. Simultaneously, the influence of the system parameters (such as magnetic impurity, thickness engineering and structural inversion asymmetry of the potential) on emergence of topological phases is studied. We take our attention to the high frequency regime in which it is possible to consider an expansion for the Floquet Hamiltonian in terms of orders of 1/Ω. The topological invariants are determined and it is de…

We investigate the fate of the quantum Hall extended states within a continuum model with spatially correlated disorder potentials. The model can be projected onto a couple of the lowest Landau bands. Levitation of the $n=0$ critical states is observed if at least the two lowest Landau bands are considered. The dependence on the magnetic length $l_B=(\hbar/(eB))^{1/2}$ and on the correlation length of the disorder potential $η$ is combined into a single dimensionless parameter $\hatη=η/l_B$. This enables us to study the behavior of the critical states for vanishing magnetic field. In the two L…
By using four-terminal configurations, we investigated the dependence of longitudinal and diagonal resistances of a graphene p-n interface on the quantum-Hall edge-state equilibration position. The resistance of a p-n device in our four-terminal scheme is asymmetric with respect to the zero point where the filling factor ($ν$) of the entire graphene vanishes. This resistance asymmetry is caused by the chiral-direction-dependent change of the equilibration position and leads to a deeper insight into the equilibration process of the quantum-Hall edge states in a bipolar graphene system.
We study the spin-dependent transmission through interfaces between a HgTe/CdTe quantum well (QW) and a metal - both for the normal metal and the superconducting case. Interestingly, we discover a new type of spin Hall effect at these interfaces that happens to exist even in the absence of structure and bulk inversion asymmetry within each subsystem (i.e. the QW and the metal). Thus, this is a pure boundary spin Hall effect which can be directly related to the existence of exponentially localized edge states at the interface. We demonstrate how this effect can be measured and functionalized fo…
Quasi--one dimensional edge channels are formed at the boundary of a two-dimensional electron system subject to a strong perpendicular magnetic field. We consider the effect of Rashba spin--orbit coupling, induced by structural inversion asymmetry, on their electronic and transport properties. Both our analytical and numerical results show that spin--split quantum--Hall edge channels exhibit properties analogous to that of Rashba--split quantum wires. Suppressed backscattering and a long spin life time render these edge channels an ideal system for observing voltage--controlled spin precession…
The Rashba spin-orbit coupling arising from structure inversion asymmetry couples spin and momentum degrees of freedom providing a suitable (and very intensively investigated) environment for spintronic effects and devices. Here we show that in the presence of strong disorder, non-homogeneity in the spin-orbit coupling gives rise to a finite spin Hall conductivity in contrast with the corresponding case of a homogeneous linear spin-orbit coupling. In particular, we examine the inhomogeneity arising from a striped structure for a two-dimensional electron gas, affecting both density and Rashba s…
The transport properties of the two-dimensional system in HgTe-based quantum wells containing simultaneously electrons and holes of low densities are examined. The Hall resistance, as a function of perpendicular magnetic field, reveals an unconventional behavior, different from the classical N-shaped dependence typical for bipolar systems with electron-hole asymmetry. The quantum features of magnetotransport are explained by means of numerical calculation of the Landau level spectrum based on the Kane Hamiltonian. The origin of the quantum Hall plateau σxy = 0 near the charge neutrality point …
We study two-dimensional electron systems in the hydrodynamic regime. We show that a geometrical Berry curvature modifies the effective Navier-Stokes equation for viscous electron flow in topological materials. For small electric fields, the Hall current becomes negligible compared to the viscous longitudinal current. In this regime, we highlight an unconventional Poiseuille flow with an asymmetric profile and a deviation of the maximum of the current from the center of the system. In a two-dimensional infinite geometry, the Berry curvature leads to current whirlpools and an asymmetry of poten…
What is the fate of the ground state of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at very low Landau level filling factors ($ν$) where interaction reigns supreme? An ordered array of electrons, the so-called Wigner crystal, has long been believed to be the answer. It was in fact the search for the elusive Wigner crystal that led to the discovery of an unexpected, incompressible liquid state, namely the fractional quantum Hall state at $ν=1/3$. Understanding the competition between the liquid and solid ground states has since remained an active field of fundamental research. Here we report exper…
We consider the combined effect of a gap and a Zeeman interaction on the helical Dirac fermions which exist on the surface of a topological insulator. Magneto-optical properties, the magnetization, Hall effect and the density of states are considered with emphasis on the particle-hole asymmetry which arises when a subdominant Schrödinger piece is included along with the dominant Dirac part of the Hamiltonian. When appropriate, we compare our results with those of a single valley gapped graphene system for which Zeeman splitting behaves differently. We provide a derivation of the phase offset i…
The integer quantum Hall effect is a topological state of quantum matter in two dimensions, and has recently been observed in three-dimensional topological insulator thin films. Here we study the Landau levels and edge states of surface Dirac fermions in topological insulators under strong magnetic field. We examine the formation of the quantum plateaux of the Hall conductance and find two different patterns, in one pattern the filling number covers all integers while only odd integers in the other. We focus on the quantum plateau closest to zero energy and demonstrate the breakdown of the qua…

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable objects that are made with a bunch of spins tightly arranged in a smooth fashion. Their topological nature provides unusual and complex transport properties, such as the skyrmion Hall effect. Extensive Hall data have further revealed asymmetry between skyrmion and antiskyrmion Hall angles, which cannot be accounted by known mechanisms. Here, we explain this asymmetry by utilizing another universal transport coefficient called `Hall viscosity,' extensively studied in quantum Hall systems. Hall viscosity is modeled in steady-state skyrmions motion by g…
We consider a time reversal symmetry (TRS) broken Kane-Mele model superimposed with Haldane model and chart out the phase diagram using spin Chern number to investigate the fate of quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) and quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) phases. Interestingly, in addition to QSHI and QAHI phase, the phase diagram unveils quantum anomalous spin Hall insulator (QASHI) phase where only one spin sector is topological. We also find multicritical points where three / four topological phase boundaries coalesce. These topological phases are protected by an effective TRS and a com…
We predict a spin anomalous-Hall unidirectional magnetoresistance (AH-UMR) in conducting bilayers composed of a ferromagnetic layer and a nonmagnetic layer, which does $\textit{not}$ rely on the spin Hall effect in the normal metal layer$-$in stark contrast to the well-studied unidirectional spin-Hall magnetoresistance$-$but, instead, arises from the spin anomalous Hall effect in the ferromagnetic layer. Physically, it is the charge-spin conversion induced by the spin anomalous Hall effect that conspires with the structural inversion asymmetry to generate a net nonequilibrium spin density in t…
We report on our theoretical investigation of the electron velocity in (narrow) quantum-Hall systems, considering the out-of-linear-response regime. The electrostatic properties of the electron system are obtained by the Thomas-Fermi-Poisson nonlinear screening theory. The electron velocity distribution as a function of the lateral coordinate is obtained from the slope of the screened potential within the incompressible strips (ISs). The asymmetry induced by the imposed current on the ISs is investigated, as a function of the current intensity and impurity concentration. We find that the width…
We generalize the topological phase diagram of magnetic topological insulator (TI) thin films in an extended parameter space comprising out-of-plane (OP) and in-plane (IP) exchange fields in the presence of structural inversion asymmetry (SIA) while taking a generic orbital-dependent spin coupling allowed for TIs into consideration. The results show that an IP field substantially deforms phase boundaries and generically induces the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect. For symmetric spin coupling, extremely weak OP and IP exchange fields create the QAH state by tuning SIA with a gate bias. For …
We discuss in details the electron scattering pattern on skyrmion-like magnetic textures in two-dimensional geometry. The special attention is focused on analyzing the scattering asymmetry, which is a precursor of the topological Hall effect. We present analytical results valid for the limiting regimes of strong and weak coupling, we also describe the numerical scheme that gives access to the exact solution of the scattering problem. Based on the numerical computations we investigate the properties of the asymmetric scattering for an arbitrary magnitude of the interaction strength and the topo…
The fate of the current carrying states of a quantum Hall system is considered in the situation when the disorder strength is increased and the transition from the quantum Hall liquid to the Hall insulator takes place. We investigate a two-dimensional lattice model with spatially correlated disorder potentials and calculate the density of states and the localization length either by using a recursive Green function method or by direct diagonalization in connection with the procedure of level statistics. From the knowledge of the energy and disorder dependence of the localization length and the…
The intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 provides an ideal platform for exploring exotic topological quantum phenomena. Recently, the Chern insulator and axion insulator phases have been realized in few-layer MnBi2Te4 devices at low magnetic field regime. However, the fate of MnBi2Te4 in high magnetic field has never been explored in experiment. In this work, we report transport studies of exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes in pulsed magnetic fields up to 61.5 T. In the high-field limit, the Chern insulator phase with Chern number C = -1 evolves into a robust zero Hall resistance…
Quantum wells in InAs/GaSb heterostructures can be tuned to a topological regime associated with the quantum spin Hall effect, which arises due to an inverted band gap and hybridized electron and hole states. Here, we investigate electron-hole hybridization and the fate of the quantum spin Hall effect in a quasi one-dimensional geometry, realized in a core-shell-shell nanowire with an insulator core and InAs and GaSb shells. We calculate the band structure for an infinitely long nanowire using $\mathbf{k \cdot p}$ theory within the Kane model and the envelope function approximation, then map t…
