We report the first unambiguous observation of a fractional quantum Hall state in the Landau level of a two-dimensional hole sample at the filling factor $ν=8/3$. We identified this state by a quantized Hall resistance and an activated temperature dependence of the longitudinal resistance and found an energy gap of 40 mK. To our surprise the particle-hole conjugate state at filling factor $ν=7/3$ in our sample does not develop down to 6.9 mK. This observation is contrary to that in electron samples in which the 7/3 state is typically more stable than the 8/3 state. We present evidence that the asymmetry between the 7/3 and 8/3 states in our hole sample is due to Landau level mixing.
In this paper, we revisit some quantum mechanical aspects related to the Quantum Hall Effect. We consider a Landau type model, paying a special attention to the experimental and geometrical features of Quantum Hall experiments. The resulting formalism is then used to compute explicitely the Hall conductivity from a Kubo formula.
We study theoretically the dispersion of a single quasiparticle or quasihole of the fractional quantum Hall effect, obtained by injecting or removing a composite fermion. By comparing to a free fermion system, we estimate the regime of validity of the Landau-Fermi-liquid-type description and deduce the Landau mass.
The scarcity of the fractional quantum Hall effect in higher Landau levels is a most intriguing fact when contrasted with its great abundance in the lowest Landau level. This paper shows that a suppression of the hard core repulsion in going from the lowest Landau level to higher Landau levels leads to a collapse of the energy of the neutral excitation, destabilizing all fractional states in the third and higher Landau levels, and almost all in the second Landau level. The remaining fractions are in agreement with those observed experimentally.
We derive an effective hamiltonian in the Lowest Landau Level (LLL) that incorporates the effects of Landau-level mixing to all higher Landau levels to leading order in the ratio of interaction energy to the cyclotron energy. We then transcribe the hamiltonian to the composite fermion basis using our hamiltonian approach and compute the effect of LL mixing on transport gaps.
We generalize the fractional quantum Hall hierarchy picture to apply to arbitrary, possibly non-Abelian, fractional quantum Hall states. Applying this to the nu = 5/2 Moore-Read state, we construct new explicit trial wavefunctions to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect in the second Landau level. The resulting hierarchy of states, which reproduces the filling fractions of all observed Hall conductance plateaus in the second Landau level, is characterized by electron pairing in the ground state and an excitation spectrum that includes non-Abelian anyons of the Ising type. We propose thi…
The $ν=2$ quantum Hall state at low Zeeman coupling is well-known to be a translationally invariant singlet if Landau level mixing is small. At zero Zeeman interaction, as Landau level mixing increases, the translationally invariant state becomes unstable to aninhomogeneous state. This is the first realistic example of a full Hall crystal, which shows the coexistence of quantum Hall order and density wave order. The full Hall crystal differs from the more familiar Wigner crystal by a topological property, which results in it having only linearly dispersing collective modes at small $q$, and no…
The angular momentum model which couples the spin and charge is discussed as a possible theory of the quantum Hall effect. The high Landau level filling fractions 5/2, 7/3 and 8/3 are understood by this model. It is found that 7/3 and 8/3 are the particle-hole conjugates and 5/2 arises due to a limiting level at 1/2 with Landau level number n=5 which makes the fraction as 5/2.
We report results of exact diagonalization studies of the spin- and valley-polarized fractional quantum Hall effect in the $N=0$ and 1 Landau levels in graphene. We use an effective model that incorporates Landau level mixing to lowest-order in the parameter $κ= \frac{e^2/ε\ell}{\hbar v_F/\ell}=\frac{e^2}{εv_F\hbar}$ which is magnetic field independent and can only be varied through the choice of substrate. We find Landau level mixing effects are negligible in the $N=0$ Landau level for $κ\lesssim 2$. In fact, the lowest Landau level projected Coulomb Hamiltonian is a better approximation to t…
Observations of electron-hole asymmetry in transport through graphene devices at high magnetic field challenge prevalent models of the graphene quantum Hall effect. Here, we study this asymmetry both in conventional magnetotransport and in scanning gate microscopy maps measured in an encapsulated graphene constriction. We reveal that the presence of upstream modes and local doping in the vicinity of electrical contacts leads to a totally different picture of topological breakdown for electrons and holes, explaining the observed asymmetry.
The nu=5/2 fractional quantum Hall state is studied numerically, directly including the effects of electron scattering between neighboring Landau levels. Significant reduction of the excitation gap caused by the LL mixing explains the discrepancy between earlier calculations and experiments. On the other hand, LL mixing also considerably reduces overlaps with the Moore--Read wavefunction, raising a question of the actual realization of nonabelian quasiparticles in present experiments.
Motivated by recent transport experiments, we theoretically study the quantum Hall effect in topological semimetal films. Owing to the confinement effect, the bulk subbands originating from the chiral Landau levels establish energy gaps that have quantized Hall conductance and can be observed in relatively thick films. We find that the quantum Hall state is strongly anisotropic for different confinement directions not only due to the presence of the surface states but also because of the bulk chiral Landau levels. As a result, we re-examine the quantum Hall effect from the surface Fermi arcs a…
We report low temperature electronic transport results on the fractional quantum Hall effect of composite fermions at Landau level filling nu = 4/11 in a very high mobility and low density sample. Measurements were carried out at temperatures down to 15mK, where an activated magnetoresistance Rxx and a quantized Hall resistance Rxy, within 1% of the expected value of h/(4/11)e^2, were observed. The temperature dependence of the Rxx minimum at 4/11 yields an activation energy gap of ~ 7 mK. Developing Hall plateaus were also observed at the neighboring states at nu = 3/8 and 5/13.
With the recent observation of graphene-like Landau levels at the surface of topological insulators, the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effect, which is a fundamental signature of strong correlations, has become of interest. Some experiments have reported intra-Landau level structure that is suggestive of fractional quantum Hall effect. This paper discusses the feasibility of fractional quantum Hall effect from a theoretical perspective, and argues that while this effect should occur, ideally, in the $n=0$ and $|n|=1$ Landau levels, it is ruled out in higher $|n|$ Landau levels. Unlike…
We present a Hartree-Fock study that incorporates the effects of Landau level mixing and screening due to filled levels into the computation of energies and states of quasiparticles in quantum Hall ferromagnets. We use it to construct a phase diagram for skyrmion stability as a function of magnetic field and Zeeman coupling strengths. We find that Landau level mixing tends to favor spin-polarized quasiparticles, while finite thickness corrections favor skyrmions. Our studies show that skyrmion stability in high Landau levels is very sensitive to the way in which electron-electron interactions …
We report on our theoretical investigations that point to the possibility of a fractional quantum Hall effect with partial spin polarization at $ν=3/8$. The physics of the incompressible state proposed here involves p-wave pairing of composite fermions in the spin reversed sector. The temperature and magnetic field regimes for the realization of this state are estimated.
We investigate the 3D quantum Hall effect in Weyl semimetals and elucidate a global picture of the edge states. The edge states hosting 3D quantum Hall effect are combinations of Fermi arcs and chiral bulk Landau levels parallel to the magnetic field. The Hall conductance, $σ_{xz}^H$, shows quantized plateaus at Weyl nodes while tuning the magnetic field. However, the chiral Landau levels manipulate the quantization of Weyl orbits, especially under a tilted magnetic field, and the resulting edge states lead to distinctive Hall transport phenomena. A tilted magnetic field contributes an intrins…
Temperature dependence of the longitudinal and Hall resistance is studied in the regime of localization-delocalization transition. We carry out measurements of a scaling exponent $κ$ in the Landau level mixing region at several filling factors. The localization exponent $γ$ is extracted using an approach based on the variable range hopping theory. The values of $γ$ and $κ$ are found to be universal, independent of filling factor in our sample. We can conclude that although Landau level mixing can change the degeneracy of a quantum Hall state, the value of the scaling exponent remains the same …
Measurements in very low disorder two-dimensional electrons confined to relatively wide GaAs quantum well samples with tunable density reveal reentrant $ν=1$ integer quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level near filling factors $ν=4/5$ and 6/5. These states are not seen at low densities and become more prominent with increasing density and in wider wells. Our data suggest a close competition between different types of Wigner crystal states near these fillings. We also observe an intriguing disappearance and reemergence of the $ν=4/5$ fractional quantum Hall effect with increasing density…
We investigate numerically whether the chiral symmetry is the sole factor dominating the criticality of the quantum Hall transitions in disordered graphene. When the disorder respects the chiral symmetry, the plateau-to-plateau transition at the $n=0$ Landau level is shown to become anomalous (i.e., step-function-like). Surprisingly, however, the anomaly is robust against the inclusion of the uniform next-nearest neighbor hopping, which degrades the chiral symmetry of the lattice models. We have also shown that the ac (optical) Hall conductivity exhibits a robust plateau structure when the dis…
Using transport measurements, we investigate multicomponent quantum Hall (QH) ferromagnetism in dual-gated rhombohedral trilayer graphene (r-TLG), in which the real spin, orbital pseudospin and layer pseudospins of the lowest Landau level form spontaneous ordering. We observe intermediate quantum Hall plateaus, indicating a complete lifting of the degeneracy of the zeroth Landau level (LL) in the hole-doped regime. In charge neutral r-TLG, the orbital degeneracy is broken first, and the layer degeneracy is broken last and only the in presence of an interlayer potential U. In the phase space of…
The quantum Hall effect (QHE) with quantized Hall resistance of h/νe2 starts the research on topological quantum states and lays the foundation of topology in physics. Afterwards, Haldane proposed the QHE without Landau levels, showing nonzero Chern number |C|=1, which has been experimentally observed at relatively low temperatures. For emerging physics and low-power-consumption electronics, the key issues are how to increase the working temperature and realize high Chern numbers (C>1). Here, we report the experimental discovery of high-Chern-number QHE (C=2) without Landau levels and C=1 Cher…
The Landau level spectra and the quantum Hall effect of ABA-stacked multilayer graphenes are studied in the effective mass approximation. The low-energy effective mass Hamiltonian may be partially diagonalized into an approximate block-diagonal form, with each diagonal block contributing parabolic bands except, in a multilayer with an odd number of layers, for an additional block describing Dirac-like bands with a linear dispersion. We fully include the band parameters and, taking into account the symmetry of the lattice, we analyze their affect on the block-diagonal Hamiltonian. Next-nearest …
Energy versus magnetic field (Hofstadter butterfly diagram) in twisted bilayer graphene is studied theoretically. If we take the usual Landau gauge, we cannot take a finite periodicity even when the magnetic flux through a supercell is a rational number. We show that the \textit{periodic} Landau gauge, which has the periodicity in one direction, makes it possible to obtain the Hofstadter butterfly diagram. Since a supercell can be large, magnetic flux through a supercell normalized by the flux quantum can be a fractional number with a small denominator, even when a magnetic field is not extrem…
The effect of magnetic field on an ultrathin magnetic topological insulator film with structural inversion asymmetry is investigated. We introduce the phase diagram, calculate the Landau-level spectrum analytically and simulate the transport behavior in Landauer-Büttiker formalism. The quantum anomalous Hall phase will survive increasing magnetic field. Due to the two spin polarized zero modes of Landau levels a nontrivial phase similar with quantum spin Hall effect can be induced by magnetic field which is protected by structural inversion symmetry. Some exotic longitudinal and Hall resistanc…
We examine effects of inversion asymmetry of a GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As quantum well (QW) on electron-nuclear spin coupling in the fractional quantum Hall (QH) regime. Increasing the QW potential asymmetry at a fixed Landau-level filling factor (nu) with gate voltages suppresses the current-induced nuclear spin polarization in the nu = 2/3 Ising QH ferromagnet, while it significantly enhances the nuclear spin relaxation at general nu. These findings suggest that mixing of different spin states due to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction strongly affects the electron-nuclear spin coupling.
We investigate the effect of the filling factor on transport anisotropies, known as stripes, in high Landau levels of a two-dimensional electron gas. We find that at certain in-plane magnetic fields, the stripes orientation is sensitive to the filling factor within a given Landau level. This sensitivity gives rise to the emergence of stripes away from half-filling while an orthogonally-oriented, native stripes reside at half-filling. This switching of the anisotropy axes within a single Landau level can be attributed to a strong dependence of the native symmetry breaking potential on the filli…
We report on results of systematic numerical studies of two-dimensional electron gas systems subject to a perpendicular magnetic field, with a high Landau level partially filled by electrons. Our results are strongly suggestive of a breakdown of translational symmetry and the presence of crystalline order in the ground state. This is in sharp contrast with the physics of the lowest and first excited Landau levels, and in good qualitative agreement with earlier Hartree-Fock studies. Experimental implications of our results are discussed.
In a recent experiment (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 036903 (2001)), Spielman et al observed a linearly dispersing collective mode in quantum Hall ferromagnet. While it qualitatively agrees with the Goldstone mode dispersion at small wave vector, the experimental mode velocity is slower than that calculated by previous theories by a factor about 0.55. A better agreement with the experimental data may possibly be achieved by taking the subband Landau level coupling into account due to the finiteness of the layer thickness. A novel coupling of quantum fluctuation to the tunneling is briefly discus…
We study theoretically the two-dimensional topological electric state in a single band semiconductor with strong spin-orbit interactions under harmonic scalar electrostatic potentials. The electronic states described by the spin Landau levels are insulating in the bulk and host gapless edge states in the presence of time-reversal symmetry. Such topological states show the properties of the quantized electric conductivity and the quantized spin Hall conductivity characterized by the spin Chern number $\mathbb{Z}$. The quantization of the two conductivities are robust under various perturbations…
Relaxation of collective plasmon inter-Landau-level excitation is determined by emission of LO-phonons or by Auger-like processes when this emission is suppressed off the magneto-phonon resonance conditions. The decay of "one-cyclotron" magneto-plasmons with wave-vectors near the roton minimum is studied under the condition of filling $ν=1$. Some features of this relaxation should be helpful for the experimental detection of the magneto-rotons in a strongly correlated 2D electron gas.
We have measured activation gaps for odd-integer quantum Hall states in a unidirectional lateral superlattice (ULSL) -- a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) subjected to a unidirectional periodic modulation of the electrostatic potential. By comparing the activation gaps with those simultaneously measured in the adjacent section of the same 2DEG sample without modulation, we find that the gaps are reduced in the ULSL by an amount corresponding to the width acquired by the Landau levels through the introduction of the modulation. The decrement of the activation gap varies with the magnetic fie…
We investigate electronic transport in high mobility (\textgreater 100,000 cm$^2$/V$\cdot$s) trilayer graphene devices on hexagonal boron nitride, which enables the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and an unconventional quantum Hall effect. The massless and massive characters of the TLG subbands lead to a set of Landau level crossings, whose magnetic field and filling factor coordinates enable the direct determination of the Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure (SWMcC) parameters used to describe the peculiar electronic structure of trilayer graphene. Moreover, at high magnetic fields, the d…
We report on polarization selection rules of inter-Landau level transitions using reflection-type optical Hall effect measurements from 600 to 4000 cm-1 on epitaxial graphene grown by thermal decomposition of silicon carbide. We observe symmetric and anti-symmetric signatures in our data due to polarization preserving and polarization mixing inter-Landau level transitions, respectively. From field-dependent measurements we identify that transitions in decoupled graphene mono-layers are governed by polarization mixing selection rules, whereas transitions in coupled graphene mono-layers are gove…
We present in this Letter the results from two high quality, low density GaAs quantum wells. In sample A of electron density n=5.0x10^10 cm^-2, anisotropic electronic transport behavior was observed at ν=7/2 in the second Landau level. We believe that the anisotropy is due to the large Landau level mixing effect in this sample. In sample B of density 4.1x10^10 cm^-2, strong 8/3, 5/2, and 7/3 fractional quantum Hall states were observed. Furthermore, our energy gap data suggest that, similar to the 8/3 state, the 5/2 state may also be spin unpolarized in the low density limit. The results from …
For certain measurements, the Corbino geometry has a distinct advantage over the Hall and van der Pauw geometries, in that it provides a direct probe of the bulk 2DEG without complications due to edge effects. This may be important in enabling detection of the non-Abelian entropy of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state via bulk thermodynamic measurements. We report the successful fabrication and measurement of a Corbino-geometry sample in an ultra-high mobility GaAs heterostructure, with a focus on transport in the second and higher Landau levels. In particular, we report activation energy ga…
Detailed measurements of the longitudinal thermopower of two-dimensional electrons in the first excited Landau level are reported. Clear signatures of numerous fractional quantized Hall states, including those at $ν= 5/2$ and 7/3, are observed in the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the thermopower. An abrupt collapse of the thermopower is observed below about $T= 40$ mK at those filling factors where re-entrant insulating electronic states have been observed in conventional resistive transport studies. The thermopower observed at $ν= 5/2$ is discussed in the context of recent theo…
The Nieh-Yan anomaly is the anomalous breakdown of the chiral U(1) symmetry caused by the interaction between torsion and fermions. We study this anomaly from the point of view of torsional Landau levels. It was found that the torsional Landau levels are gapless, while their contributions to the chiral anomaly are canceled, except those from the lowest torsional Landau levels. Hence, the dimension is effectively reduced from (3+1)-dimensional to (1+1)-dimensional. We further show that the coefficient of the Nieh-Yan anomaly is the free energy density in (1+1) dimensions. Especially, at finite …
We present activation gap measurements of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the second Landau level. Signatures for 14 (5) distinct incompressible FQHE states are seen in a high (low) mobility sample with the enigmatic 5/2 even denominator FQHE having a large activation gap of $\sim$600 ($\sim$300mK) in the high (low) mobility sample. Our measured large relative gaps for 5/2, 7/3, and 8/3 FQHE indicate emergence of exotic FQHE correlations in the second Ladau level, possibly quite different from the well-known lowest Landau level Laughlin correlations. Our measured 5/2 gap is found …
Work by Mandal and Jain [S. S. Mandal and J. K. Jain, Solid State Commun. 118, 503 (2001)] suggests that interaction induced mixing with the second composite fermion Landau level can lead to renormalization of the electron correlation function exponent in the fractional quantum Hall effect. In the work reported here a similar mixing with the second electronic Landau level is studied in the nu=1 integer case. The ground state is calculated by use of the Hartree-Fock algorithm, and the electron density and electron correlation function on the edge are calculated. It is shown that the interaction…
Quantum Hall states at filling fraction $ν$=5/2 are examined by numerical diagonalization. Spin-polarized and -unpolarized states of systems with $N\le 18$ electrons are studied, neglecting effects of Landau level mixing. We find that the ground state is spin polarized. It is incompressible and has a large overlap with paired states like the Pfaffian. For a given sample, the energy gap is about 11 times smaller than at $ν$=1/3. Evidence is presented of phase transitions to compressible states, driven by the interaction strength at short distance. A reinterpretation of experiments is suggested.
Intrinsic Hall conductivity, emerging when chiral symmetry is broken, is at the heart of future low energy consumption devices because it can generate non-dissipative charge neutral current. A symmetry breaking state is also induced by electronic correlation even for the centro-symmetric crystalline materials. However, generation of non-dissipative charge neutral current by intrinsic Hall conductivity induced by such spontaneous symmetry breaking is experimentally elusive. Here we report intrinsic Hall conductivity and generation of a non-dissipative charge neutral current in a spontaneous ant…
Breakdown of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) is commonly associated with an electric field approaching the inter Landau-level (LL) Zener field, ratio of the Landau gap and cyclotron radius. Eluded in semiconducting heterostructures, in spite of extensive investigation, the intrinsic Zener limit is reported here using high-mobility bilayer graphene and high-frequency current noise. We show that collective excitations arising from electron-electron interactions are essential. Beyond a noiseless ballistic QHE regime a large superpoissonian shot noise signals the breakdown via inter-LL scattering. T…
We study the stability of spin-resolved Landau levels at electron filling factor $ν=n+1/2$, where n is a positive integer. Representing the half-filled topmost Landau level by fermions and the n filled inner Landau levels by n bosons, coupled to the Chern-Simons gauge fields, we show that the ground states exhibit charge density wave order for $n(n+1/2)>15.54 π(a_B^*)^2 n_e$, where $n_e$ is the 2D carrier density and $a_B^*$ is the effective Bohr radius. We find that the pairing interaction mediated by the fluctuating gauge field is enhanced near the charge density wave instability such that p…
At low Landau level filling of a two-dimensional electron system, typically associated with the formation of an electron crystal, we observe local minima in Rxx at filling factors nu=2/11, 3/17, 3/19, 2/13, 1/7, 2/15, 2/17, and 1/9. Each of these developing fractional quantum Hall (FQHE) states appears only above a filling factor-specific temperature. This can be interpreted as the melting of an electron crystal and subsequent FQHE liquid formation. The observed sequence of FQHE states follow the series of composite fermion states emanating from nu=1/6 and nu=1/8.
We use a mathematical framework that we introduced in a previous paper to study geometrical and quantum mechanical aspects of a Hall system with finite size and general boundary conditions. Geometrical structures control possibly the integral or fractionnal quantization of the Hall conductivity depending on the value of $NB/2π$ ($N$ is the number of charge carriers and $B$ is the magnetic field). When $NB/2π$ is irrationnal, we show that monovalued wave functions can be constructed only on the graph of a free group with two generators. When $NB/2π$ is rationnal, the relevant space becomes a pu…
Nature of the fractional quantum Hall state at Landau level filling factor 5/2 remains elusive despite intensive experimental and theoretical work. While the leading theoretical candidates are Moore-Read Pfaffian (Pf) and its particle-hole conjugate anti-Pfaffian (APf), neither received unambiguous experimental support. We show that a state that is intermediate between them, made of alternating stripes of Pf and APf in the bulk, is a viable candidate. Such a state is shown to be incompressible and thus a charge insulator in the bulk, but a heat conductor due to the presence of gapless neutral …
We show that, when graphene is subjected to an appropriate one-dimensional external periodic potential, additional branches of massless fermions are generated with nearly the same electron-hole crossing energy as that at the original Dirac point of graphene. Because of these new zero-energy branches, the Landau levels at charge neutral filling becomes 4(2N+1)-fold degenerate (with N=0,1,2,..., tunable by the potential strength and periodicity) with the corresponding Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ showing a step of size 4(2N+1)$e^2/h$. These theoretical findings are robust against variations in the…
Superconductivity and quantum Hall effect are distinct states of matter occurring in apparently incompatible physical conditions. Recent theoretical developments suggest that the coupling of quantum Hall effect with a superconductor can provide a fertile ground for realizing exotic topological excitations such as non-abelian Majorana fermions or Fibonacci particles. As a step toward that goal, we report observation of Andreev reflection at the junction of a quantum Hall edge state in a single layer graphene and a quasi-two dimensional niobium diselenide (NbSe2) superconductor. Our principal fi…
We report ultra-low temperature experiments on the obscure fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at Landau level filling factor $ν$=5/2 in a very high mobility specimen of $μ=1.7 \times 10^7$ cm$^2$/Vs. We achieve an electron temperature as low as $\sim$ 4~mK, where we observe vanishing $R_{xx}$ and, for the first time, a quantized Hall resistance, $R_{xy}=h/(5/2e^2)$ to within 2 ppm. $R_{xy}$ at the neighboring odd-denominator states $ν$=7/3 and 8/3 is also quantized. The temperature dependences of the $R_{xx}$-minima at these fractional fillings yield activation energy gaps $Δ_{5/2}$=0.11K, …
By restricting the motion of high-mobility 2D electron gas to a network of channels with smooth confinement, we were able to trace, both classically and quantum-mechanically, the interplay of backscattering, and of the bending action of a weak magnetic field. Backscattering limits the mobility, while bending initiates quantization of the Hall conductivity. We demonstrate that, in restricted geometry, electron motion reduces to two Chalker-Coddington networks, with opposite directions of propagation along the links, which are weakly coupled by disorder. Interplay of backscattering and bending r…
The effect of inter-Landau-band mixing on electron localization in an integer quantum Hall system is studied. We find that mixing of localized states with {\it opposite chirality} tends to delocalize the states. This delocalization effect survives the quantum treatment. Extended states form bands because of this mixing, as we show through a numerical calculation on a two-channel network model. Based on this result, we propose a new phase diagram with a narrow {\it metallic} phase that separates any neighboring QH phases from each other and also separates each of them from the insulating phase.…
We discuss the possibility of the quantum Hall effect at half-filled Landau level in terms of the pairing of the composite fermions. In the absence of Coulomb energy, we show that the ground state of the system is described by the {\it p}-wave BCS pairing state of composite fermions. When the ratio $α\equiv (e^2/ε\ell_B)/ε_F$ ($\ell_B$ : the magnetic length, $ε_F$ : Fermi energy of the composite fermions) is larger than a critical value $α_c \sim 8.2$ the gap of the pairing state vanishes. However, $α$ remains less than $α_c$ if $\hbar ω_c \gg e^2/ε\ell_B$ holds. Then in this situation it is p…
We study edges states of graphene ribbons in the quantized Hall regime, and show that they can be described within a continuum model (the Dirac equation) when appropriate boundary conditions are adopted. The two simplest terminations, zigzag and armchair edges, are studied in detail. For zigzag edges, we find that the lowest Landau level states terminate in two types of edge states, dispersionless and current-carrying surface states. The latter involve components on different sublattices that may be separated by distances far greater than the magnetic length. For armchair edges, the boundary c…
In this work we obtain the Landau levels and the Hall conductivity at zero temperature of a two-dimensional electron gas on a conical surface. We investigate the integer quantum Hall effect considering two different approaches. The first one is an extrinsic approach which employs an effective scalar potential that contains both the Gaussian and the mean curvature of the surface. The second one, an intrinsic approach where the Gaussian curvature is the sole term in the scalar curvature potential. From a theoretical point of view, the singular Gaussian curvature of the cone may affect the wave f…
We present a quantitative study of most prominent incompressible quantum Hall states in the partially filled first excited Landau level (LL1) which have been recently studied experimentally by Choi et al. The pseudopotential describing the electron - electron interaction in LL1 is harmonic at short range. It produces a series of incompressible states which is different from its LL0 counterpart. The numerical data indicate that the most prominent states $ν={5/2}$, 7/3, and 8/3 are not produced by Laughlin correlated electrons, but result from a tendency of electrons to form pairs or larger clus…
The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, a condensed matter analog of the parity anomaly, is characterized by a quantized Hall conductivity in the absence of an external magnetic field. However, it has been recently shown that, even in the presence of Landau levels, the QAH effect can be distinguished from the conventional quantum Hall (QH) effect due to the parity anomaly. As a signature of this effect, we predicted coexistent counterpropagating QAH and QH edge states. In the present work, we generalize these findings to QAH insulators with broken particle-hole symmetry. In particular, we der…
