Observations of electron-hole asymmetry in transport through graphene devices at high magnetic field challenge prevalent models of the graphene quantum Hall effect. Here, we study this asymmetry both in conventional magnetotransport and in scanning gate microscopy maps measured in an encapsulated graphene constriction. We reveal that the presence of upstream modes and local doping in the vicinity of electrical contacts leads to a totally different picture of topological breakdown for electrons and holes, explaining the observed asymmetry.
The quantum Hall effect is the seminal example of topological protection, as charge carriers are transmitted through one-dimensional edge channels where backscattering is prohibited. Graphene has made its marks as an exceptional platform to reveal new facets of this remarkable property. However, in conventional Hall bar geometries, topological protection of graphene edge channels is found regrettably less robust than in high mobility semi-conductors. Here, we explore graphene quantum Hall regime at the local scale, using a scanning gate microscope. We reveal the detrimental influence of antido…
The structure of edge modes at the boundary of quantum Hall (QH) phases forms the basis for understanding low energy transport properties. In particular, the presence of ``upstream'' modes, moving against the direction of charge current flow, is critical for the emergence of renormalized modes with exotic quantum statistics. Detection of excess noise at the edge is a smoking gun for the presence of upstream modes. Here we report on noise measurements at the edges of fractional QH (FQH) phases realized in dual graphite-gated bilayer graphene devices. A noiseless dc current is injected at one of…
Counter propagating (upstream) chiral neutral edge modes, which were predicted to be present in hole-conjugate states, were observed recently in a variety of fractional quantum Hall states (v=2/3,v=3/5,v=8/3 & v=5/2), by measuring charge noise that resulted after partitioning the neutral mode by a constriction (denoted, as N\rightarrowC). Particularly noticeable was the observation of such modes in the v=5/2 fractional state - as it sheds light on the non-abelian nature of the state's wavefunction. Yet, the nature of these unique, upstream, chargeless modes and the microscopic process in which…
Mach-Zehnder interferometry has been proposed as a probe for detecting the statistics of anyonic quasiparticles in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states. Here we focus on interferometers made of multimode edge states with upstream modes. We find that the interference visibility is suppressed due to downstream-upstream mode entanglement; the latter serves as a "which path" detector to the downstream interfering trajectories. Our analysis tackles a concrete realization of filling factor 2/3, but its applicability goes beyond that specific case, and encompasses the recent observation of ubiquitous…
Laffont et al. [Science 363, 54-57 (2019)] report an upstream current in the nu=2/3 quantum Hall regime, which, they claim, might be due to a counter-propagating charge mode. We show that this observation can also be explained by the expected upstream neutral mode, without the need for an upstream charge mode. Our results agree with the observed data and explain why the upstream current is observed only in the unpolarized nu=2/3 regime.
Upstream neutral modes, counter propagating to charge modes and carrying energy without net charge, had been predicted to exist in some of the fractional quantum Hall states and were recently observed via noise measurements. Understanding such modes will assist in identifying the wavefunction of these states, as well as shedding light on the role of Coulomb interactions within edge modes. In this work, performed mainly in the nu=2/3 state, we placed a quantum dot a few micrometers upstream of an ohmic contact, which served as a neutral modes source. We showed the neutral modes heat the input o…
Electrons living in a two-dimensional world under a strong magnetic field - the so-called fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) - often manifest themselves as fractionally charged quasiparticles (anyons). Moreover, being under special conditions they are expected to be immune to the environment, thus may serve as building blocks for future quantum computers. Interference of such anyons is the very first step towards understanding their anyonic statistics. However, the complex edge-modes structure of the fractional quantum Hall states, combined with upstream neutral modes, have been suspected t…
Quantum Hall phases are gapped in the bulk but support chiral edge modes, both charged and neutral. Here we consider a circuit where the path from the source of electric current to the drain necessarily passes through a segment consisting solely of neutral modes. We find that upon biasing the source, a dc electric current is detected at the drain, provided there is backscattering between counter-propagating modes under the contacts placed in certain locations. Thus, neutral modes carry information that can be used to nonlocally reconstruct a dc charge current. Our protocol can be used to detec…
The quantum Hall effect, observed in a two-dimensional electron gas subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field, imposes a 1D-like chiral, downstream, transport of charge carriers along the sample edges. Although this picture remains valid for electrons and Laughlin's fractional quasiparticles, it no longer holds for quasiparticles in the so-called hole-conjugate states. These states are expected, when disorder and interactions are weak, to harbor upstream charge modes. However, so far, charge currents were observed to flow exclusively downstream in the quantum Hall regime. Studying the canoni…
Questions on the nature of edge reconstruction and "where does the current flow" in the quantum Hall effect (QHE) have been debated for years. Moreover, the recent observation of proliferation of "upstream" neutral modes in the fractional QHE raised doubts about the present models of edge channels. In this article we focus on hole-conjugate states, nu=2/3 and nu=3/5, and present a new picture of their edge reconstruction. For example, while the present model for nu=2/3 consists of a single downstream charge channel with conductance 2/3 e^2/h and an upstream neutral mode, we show that the curre…

Several topological orders have been proposed to explain the quantum Hall plateau at $ν=5/2$. The observation of an upstream neutral mode on the sample edge [Bid et al., Nature (London) 466, 585 (2010)] supports the non-Abelian anti-Pfaffian state. On the other hand, the tunneling experiments [Radu et al., Science 320, 899 (2008); Lin et al., Phys. Rev. B 85, 165321 (2012); Baer et al., arXiv:1405.0428] favor the Halperin 331 state which exhibits no upstream modes. We find a topological order, compatible with the results of both types of experiments. That order allows both finite and zero spin…
We examine effects of inversion asymmetry of a GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As quantum well (QW) on electron-nuclear spin coupling in the fractional quantum Hall (QH) regime. Increasing the QW potential asymmetry at a fixed Landau-level filling factor (nu) with gate voltages suppresses the current-induced nuclear spin polarization in the nu = 2/3 Ising QH ferromagnet, while it significantly enhances the nuclear spin relaxation at general nu. These findings suggest that mixing of different spin states due to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction strongly affects the electron-nuclear spin coupling.
Chiral gapless boundary modes are characteristic of quantum Hall (QH) states. For hole-conjugate fractional QH phases counterpropagating edge modes (upstream and downstream) are expected. In the presence of electrostatic interactions and disorder these modes may renormalize into charge and upstream neutral modes. Orthodox models of Laughlin phases anticipate only a downstream charge mode. Here we show that in the latter case, in the presence of a smooth confining potential, edge reconstruction leads to the emergence of pairs of counterpropagating modes, which, by way of mode renormalization, m…
The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, a condensed matter analog of the parity anomaly, is characterized by a quantized Hall conductivity in the absence of an external magnetic field. However, it has been recently shown that, even in the presence of Landau levels, the QAH effect can be distinguished from the conventional quantum Hall (QH) effect due to the parity anomaly. As a signature of this effect, we predicted coexistent counterpropagating QAH and QH edge states. In the present work, we generalize these findings to QAH insulators with broken particle-hole symmetry. In particular, we der…
We report the first unambiguous observation of a fractional quantum Hall state in the Landau level of a two-dimensional hole sample at the filling factor $ν=8/3$. We identified this state by a quantized Hall resistance and an activated temperature dependence of the longitudinal resistance and found an energy gap of 40 mK. To our surprise the particle-hole conjugate state at filling factor $ν=7/3$ in our sample does not develop down to 6.9 mK. This observation is contrary to that in electron samples in which the 7/3 state is typically more stable than the 8/3 state. We present evidence that the…
We argue that the dissipative transport in ferromagnetic quantum Hall effect liquids at $ν=2N+1$ is dominated by the thermal activation of pairs consisting of an electron and an antiskyrmion (topological texture which represents a hole with 'screened' exchange interaction), thus manifesting the lack of electron-hole symmetry in quantum Hall ferromagnets. We find that the activation energy of such a pair is not the exchange energy, but is determined by the interplay between the excess Zeeman energy of a skyrmion and the charging energy of its topological texture: $${\cal E}=aε_{\rm Z}^{1/3}E_{\…
In a recent experimental paper [1] a qualitative confirmation of the existence of upstream neutral modes at $ν= 2/3$ quantum Hall edge was reported. Using the chiral Luttinger liquid theory of quantum Hall edge we develop a quantitative model of the experiment [1]. A good quantitative agreement of our theory with the experimental data reinforces the conclusion of existence of the upstream neutral mode. Our model also enables us to extract important quantitative information about non-equilibrium processes in Ohmic and tunneling contacts from the experimental data. In particular, for $ν= 2/3$, w…
The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) is a canonical example of a topological phase in a correlated 2D electron gas under strong magnetic field. While electric currents propagate as chiral downstream edge modes, chargeless upstream chiral neutral edge modes were recently observed only in hole-conjugate states (states filling ν, n+1/2<ν<n+1, with n=0,1,2,...), and in the even denominator state ν=5/2. It is believed that spontaneous 'density reconstruction' near the edges of the 2D gas, leads to multiple counter propagating edge channels, being separated from each other by incompressible str…
The effect of magnetic field on an ultrathin magnetic topological insulator film with structural inversion asymmetry is investigated. We introduce the phase diagram, calculate the Landau-level spectrum analytically and simulate the transport behavior in Landauer-Büttiker formalism. The quantum anomalous Hall phase will survive increasing magnetic field. Due to the two spin polarized zero modes of Landau levels a nontrivial phase similar with quantum spin Hall effect can be induced by magnetic field which is protected by structural inversion symmetry. Some exotic longitudinal and Hall resistanc…
The spin Hall effect in tungsten films has been experimentally studied by using STM-based measurements. These measurements have been performed by using tungsten and iron coated tungsten tips. In the case of tungsten tips, it has been observed that the current flow through the tungsten film results in an appreciable asymmetry in the tunneling current with respect to the change in the polarity of the tunneling voltage. It is reasoned that the cause of this asymmetry is the accumulation of spin polarized electrons on the tungsten film surface due to the spin Hall effect. This asymmetry is not aff…
A system of electrons in two dimensions and strong magnetic fields can be tuned to create a gapped 2D system with one dimensional channels along the edge. Interactions among these edge modes can lead to independent transport of charge and heat, even in opposite directions. Measuring the chirality and transport properties of these charge and heat modes can reveal otherwise hidden structure in the edge. Here, we heat the outer edge of such a quantum Hall system using a quantum point contact. By placing quantum dots upstream and downstream along the edge of the heater, we can measure both the che…
Quasiparticles, which obey non abelian statistics, were predicted to exist in different physical systems, but are yet to be observed directly. Possible candidate states, which are expected to support such quasiparticles, are the ν=8/3, ν=5/2 and ν=7/3 fractional quantum Hall states (in the second Landau level). The non abelian quasiparticles are expected to carry charge and a unique form of a chiral neutral edge mode. Recent measurements in the ν=5/2 state detected quasiparticle charge e/4 and an upstream (opposite to charge transport) chiral neutral mode; both agreeing with a non abelian anti…
A giant asymmetry in the magnetoresistance was revealed in high-mobility, two-dimensional electron gas on a cylindrical surface. The longitudinal resistance along the magnetic-field gradient impressed by the surface curvature was found to vanish if measured along one of the edges of the curved Hall bar. If the external magnetic field is reversed, then the longitudinal resistance vanishes at the opposite edge of the Hall bar. This asymmetry is analyzed quantitatively in terms of the Landauer-Buettiker formalism.
We investigate magnetization dynamics in a spin-Hall oscillator using a direct current measurement as well as conventional microwave spectrum analysis. When the current applies an anti-damping spin-transfer torque, we observe a change in resistance which we ascribe to the excitation of incoherent exchange magnons. A simple model is developed based on the reduction of the effective saturation magnetization, quantitatively explaining the data. The observed phenomena highlight the importance of exchange magnons on the operation of spin-Hall oscillators.
We report on our theoretical investigation considering the widths of quantized Hall plateaus (QHPs) depending on the density asymmetry induced by the large current within the out-of-linear response regime. We solve the Schrodinger equation within the Hartree type mean field approximation using Thomas Fermi Poisson nonlinear screening theory. We observe that the two dimensional electron system splits into compressible and incompressible regions for certain magnetic field intervals, where the Hall resistance is quantized and the longitudinal resistance vanishes, if an external current is imposed…
Measurements of switching via spin-orbit coupling (SOC) mechanisms are discussed for a pair of inverted Pt/Co/Pt stacks with asymmetrical Pt thicknesses. Taking into account the planar Hall effect contribution, effective fields of spin-orbit torques (SOT) are evaluated using lock-in measurements of the first and second harmonics of the Hall voltage. Reversing the stack structure leads to significant asymmetries in the switching behavior, including clear evidence of a nonlinear current dependence of the transverse effective field. Our results demonstrate potentially complex interplay in devices…
Electrical and thermal conductances of a quantum Hall bar reflect the topological structure of the incompressible bulk phase. Here we show that noise of electrical current carried through the edge evidences the interplay between these two topological observables. Transport through a structured edge is modeled by a voltage-biased line junction made up of two counter-propagating modes associated with respective filling factors. Specifically, we focus on the edge of a $ν=2/3$ fractional quantum Hall state. Noise is generated at a point distinctly separated from the hot spot (where most of the Ohm…
The quantum Hall effect is investigated in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas on the surface of a cylinder. The novel topology leads to a spatially varying filling factor along the current path. The resulting inhomogeneous current-density distribution gives rise to additional features in the magneto-transport, such as resistance asymmetry and modified longitudinal resistances. We experimentally demonstrate that the asymmetry relations satisfied in the integer filling factor regime are valid also in the transition regime to non-integer filling factors, thereby suggesting a more genera…
We demonstrate a direct approach to investigate heat transport in the fractional quantum Hall regime. At filling factor of 4/3, we inject power at quantum point contacts and detect the related heating from the activated current through a quantum dot. The experiment reveals a chargeless heat transport from a significant heating that occurs upstream of the power injection point, in the absence of a concomitant electrical current. By tuning in-situ the edge path, we show that the chargeless heat transport does not follow the reverse direction of the electrical current path along the edge. This un…
Controlling the transmission of electrical current using a quantum point contact constriction paved a way to a large variety of experiments in mesoscopic physics. The increasing interest in heat transfer in such systems fosters questions about possible manipulations of quantum heat modes that do not carry net charge(neutral modes). Here, we study the transmission of upstream neutral modes through a quantum point contact in fractional hole-conjugate quantum Hall states. Employing two different measurement techniques, we were able to render the relative spatial distribution of these chargeless m…
We consider a model for an edge state of electronic systems in the quantum Hall regime with filling $ν=1$ and in the quantum spin Hall regime. In both cases the system is in contact with two reservoirs by tunneling at point contacts. Both systems are locally driven by applying an ac voltage in one of the contacts. By weakly coupling them to a third reservoir, the transport of the generated heat is studied in two different ways: i) when the third reservoir acts as a thermometer the local temperature is sensed, and ii) when the third reservoir acts as a voltage probe the time-dependent local vol…
This paper comprises a review of our recent works on fractional chiral modes that emerge due to edge reconstruction in integer and fractional quantum Hall (QH) phases. The new part added is an analysis of edge reconstruction of the $ν= 2/5$ phase. QH states are topological phases of matter featuring chiral gapless modes at the edge. These edge modes may propagate downstream or upstream, and may support either charge or charge-neutral excitations. From topological considerations, particle-like QH states are expected to support only downstream charge modes. However the interplay between the elec…
We use the edge of the quantum Hall sample to study the possibility for counter-propagating neutral collective excitations. A novel sample design allows us to independently investigate charge and energy transport along the edge. We experimentally observe an upstream energy transfer with respect to the electron drift for the filling factors 1 and 1/3. Our analysis indicates that a neutral collective mode at the interaction-reconstructed edge is a proper candidate for the experimentally observed effect.
Two-dimensional topological insulators, and in particular quantum Hall states, are characterized by an insulating bulk and a conducting edge. Fractional states may host both downstream (dictated by the magnetic field) and upstream propagating edge modes, which leads to complex transport behavior. Here, we combine two measurement techniques, local noise thermometry and thermal conductance, to study thermal properties of states with counter-propagating edge modes. We find that, while charge equilibration between counter-propagating edge modes is very fast, the equilibration of heat is extremely …
We report on theoretical investigations of scattering asymmetry vs. incidence of carriers through exchange barriers and magnetic tunnel junctions made of semiconductors involving spin-orbit interaction. By an analytical 2?2 spin model, we show that, when Dresselhaus interaction is included in the conduction band of antiparallel magnetized electrodes, the electrons can undergo a large difference of transmission depending on the sign of their incident in-plane wavevector. In particular, the transmission is fully quenched at some points of the Brillouin zone for specific in-plane wavevectors and …
A peculiar feature of the majority of three dimensional topological insulator surface states studied experimentally thus far, namely their particle-hole asymmetry, makes quantum oscillations (Shubnikov de Haas and de Haas van Alphen oscillations) in these materials particularly rich. I show that this peculiarity can be exploited to measure the Chern number, and detect topological phase transitions in topological insulator surface states from the quantum spin Hall phase to the quantum anomalous Hall phase. I consider the behaviour of quantum oscillations in topological insulator thin film surfa…
The helical Dirac states on the surface of a topological insulator are protected by topology and display significant particle-hole asymmetry. This asymmetry arises from a subdominant Schrödinger type contribution to the Hamiltonian which provides a small perturbation to a dominant Dirac contribution. This changes the Landau levels energies in an external magnetic field ($B$) and provides modifications to the usual relativistic optical matrix elements. Nevertheless we find that the relativistic quantization of the Hall plateaux remains even when the ratio of the Schrödinger ($E_0$) to Dirac ($E…
The conductivity and Hall effect were measured in CVD-grown monolayer graphene as a function of the gate voltage, $V_{g}$, at temperatures down to $T$ = 2 K and in magnetic fields up to $B$ = 8 T. The minimal conductivity was observed at positive $V_{g}$ which shows the position of the charge neutrality point, $V_{NP}$. With decreasing $T$, $V_{NP}$ first decreases, but stop to decrease at low $T$. Hysteresis of conductivity shows similar behavior: it decreases with decreasing $T$ and disappears at low $T$. A significant asymmetry was observed at low density of charge carriers $|n|=(n,p)$: mob…
In this work, a quantum dot that is defined asymmetrically by electrostatic means induced on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure is investigated to unravel the effect of geometric constrains on the formation of spin droplets under quantised Hall conditions. The incompressibility of exciting nu = 5/2 state is explored by solving the Schrodinger equation within spin density functional theory, where the confinement potential is obtained self-consistently utilising the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Our numerical investigations show that the spatial distribution of the nu = 2 incompressible strips and elec…
Nonlinear transport coefficients do not obey, in general, reciprocity relations. We here discuss the magnetic-field asymmetries that arise in thermoelectric and heat transport of mesoscopic systems. Based on a scattering theory of weakly nonlinear transport, we analyze the leading-order symmetry parameters in terms of the screening potential response to either voltage or temperature shifts. We apply our general results to a quantum Hall antidot system. Interestingly, we find that certain symmetry parameters show a dependence on the measurement configuration.
We investigate departures of the Onsager relations in the nonlinear regime of electronic transport through mesoscopic systems. We show that the nonlinear current--voltage characteristic is not an even function of the magnetic field due only to the magnetic-field dependence of the screening potential within the conductor. We illustrate this result for two types of conductors: A quantum Hall bar with an antidot and a chaotic cavity connected to quantum point contacts. For the chaotic cavity we obtain through random matrix theory an asymmetry in the fluctuations of the nonlinear conductance that …
Experimental and theoretical investigations on the integer quantized Hall effect in gate defined narrow Hall bars are presented. At low electron mobility the classical (high temperature) Hall resistance line RH(B) cuts through the center of all Hall plateaus. In contrast, for our high mobility samples the intersection point, at even filling factors ν= 2; 4 ..., is clearly shifted towards larger magnetic fields B. This asymmetry is in good agreement with predictions of the screening theory, i. e. taking Coulomb interaction into account. The observed effect is directly related to the formation o…
Josephson junctions based on three-dimensional topological insulators offer intriguing possibilities to realize unconventional $p$-wave pairing and Majorana modes. Here, we provide a detailed study of the effect of a uniform magnetization in the normal region: We show how the interplay between the spin-momentum locking of the topological insulator and an in-plane magnetization parallel to the direction of phase bias leads to an asymmetry of the Andreev spectrum with respect to transverse momenta. If sufficiently large, this asymmetry induces a transition from a regime of gapless, counterpropag…
The edge structure of the $ν=2/3$ fractional quantum Hall state has been studied for several decades but recent experiments, exhibiting upstream neutral mode(s), a plateau at a Hall conductance of $\frac{1}{3}( e^2/h)$ through a quantum point contact, and a crossover of the effective charge, from $e/3$ at high temperature to $2e/3$ at low temperature, could not be explained by a single theory. Here we develop such a theory, based on edge reconstruction due to a confining potential with finite slope, that admits an additional $ν=1/3$ incompressible strip near the edge. Renormalization group ana…
With the recent observation of graphene-like Landau levels at the surface of topological insulators, the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effect, which is a fundamental signature of strong correlations, has become of interest. Some experiments have reported intra-Landau level structure that is suggestive of fractional quantum Hall effect. This paper discusses the feasibility of fractional quantum Hall effect from a theoretical perspective, and argues that while this effect should occur, ideally, in the $n=0$ and $|n|=1$ Landau levels, it is ruled out in higher $|n|$ Landau levels. Unlike…
By using four-terminal configurations, we investigated the dependence of longitudinal and diagonal resistances of a graphene p-n interface on the quantum-Hall edge-state equilibration position. The resistance of a p-n device in our four-terminal scheme is asymmetric with respect to the zero point where the filling factor ($ν$) of the entire graphene vanishes. This resistance asymmetry is caused by the chiral-direction-dependent change of the equilibration position and leads to a deeper insight into the equilibration process of the quantum-Hall edge states in a bipolar graphene system.
A tight binding model is used to calculate the band structure of bilayer graphene in the presence of a potential difference between the layers that opens a gap $Δ$ between the conduction and valence bands. In particular, a self consistent Hartree approximation is used to describe imperfect screening of an external gate, employed primarily to control the density $n$ of electrons on the bilayer, resulting in a potential difference between the layers and a density dependent gap $Δ(n)$. We discuss the influence of a finite asymmetry gap $Δ(0)$ at zero excess density, caused by the screening of an …
The recent, unexpected, findings of upstream neutral modes in particle-like fractional quantum Hall states, led to a realization that the nature of the neutral modes is far from being understood. Moreover, the observation of spatially separated of (at least) two downstream charge modes in hole-conjugate states (see Part One - Conductance), still faces unresolved contradictions between conductance and noise measurements. In this work we show how current fluctuations measured in various configurations shed light on the interplay between neutral and charge modes. We demonstrate that once one of t…
To determine the topological quantum numbers of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states hosting counter-propagating (CP) downstream ($N_d$) and upstream ($N_u$) edge modes, it is pivotal to study quantized transport both in the presence and absence of edge mode equilibration. While reaching the non-equilibrated regime is challenging for charge transport, we target here the thermal Hall conductance $G_{Q}$, which is purely governed by edge quantum numbers $N_d$ and $N_u$. Our experimental setup is realized with a hBN encapsulated graphite gated monolayer graphene device. For temperatures up to $35…
We study the spin-dependent transmission through interfaces between a HgTe/CdTe quantum well (QW) and a metal - both for the normal metal and the superconducting case. Interestingly, we discover a new type of spin Hall effect at these interfaces that happens to exist even in the absence of structure and bulk inversion asymmetry within each subsystem (i.e. the QW and the metal). Thus, this is a pure boundary spin Hall effect which can be directly related to the existence of exponentially localized edge states at the interface. We demonstrate how this effect can be measured and functionalized fo…
Quasi--one dimensional edge channels are formed at the boundary of a two-dimensional electron system subject to a strong perpendicular magnetic field. We consider the effect of Rashba spin--orbit coupling, induced by structural inversion asymmetry, on their electronic and transport properties. Both our analytical and numerical results show that spin--split quantum--Hall edge channels exhibit properties analogous to that of Rashba--split quantum wires. Suppressed backscattering and a long spin life time render these edge channels an ideal system for observing voltage--controlled spin precession…

The Rashba spin-orbit coupling arising from structure inversion asymmetry couples spin and momentum degrees of freedom providing a suitable (and very intensively investigated) environment for spintronic effects and devices. Here we show that in the presence of strong disorder, non-homogeneity in the spin-orbit coupling gives rise to a finite spin Hall conductivity in contrast with the corresponding case of a homogeneous linear spin-orbit coupling. In particular, we examine the inhomogeneity arising from a striped structure for a two-dimensional electron gas, affecting both density and Rashba s…
