We show that, when graphene is subjected to an appropriate one-dimensional external periodic potential, additional branches of massless fermions are generated with nearly the same electron-hole crossing energy as that at the original Dirac point of graphene. Because of these new zero-energy branches, the Landau levels at charge neutral filling becomes 4(2N+1)-fold degenerate (with N=0,1,2,..., tunable by the potential strength and periodicity) with the corresponding Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ showing a step of size 4(2N+1)$e^2/h$. These theoretical findings are robust against variations in the details of the external potential and provide measurable signatures of the unusual electronic structure of graphene superlattices.
We theoretically investigate gate-defined graphene superlattices with broken inversion symmetry as a platform for realizing tunable valley dependent transport. Our analysis is motivated by recent experiments [C. Forsythe et al., Nat. Nanotechnol. 13, 566 (2018)] wherein gate-tunable superlattice potentials have been induced on graphene by nanostructuring a dielectric in the graphene/patterneddielectric/gate structure. We demonstrate how the electronic tight-binding structure of the superlattice system resembles a gapped Dirac model with associated valley dependent transport using an unfolding …
We propose Landau levels as a probe for the topological character of electronic bands in two-dimensional moiré superlattices. We consider two configurations of twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) that have very similar band structures, but show different valley Chern numbers of the flat bands. These differences between the AB-AB and AB-BA configurations of TDBG clearly manifest as different Landau level sequences in the Hofstadter butterfly spectra calculated using the tight-binding model. The Landau level sequences are explained from the point of view of the distribution of orbital magneti…
The unique zero energy Landau Level of graphene has a particle-hole symmetry in the bulk, which is lifted at the boundary leading to a splitting into two chiral edge modes. It has long been theoretically predicted that the splitting of the zero-energy Landau level inside the {\it bulk} can lead to many interesting physics, such as quantum spin Hall effect, Dirac like singular points of the chiral edge modes, and others. However, so far the obtained splitting with high-magnetic field even on a hBN substrate are not amenable to experimental detection, and functionality. Guided by theoretical cal…
In graphene superlattices, bulk topological currents can lead to long-range charge-neutral flow and non-local resistance near Dirac points. A ballistic version of these phenomena has never been explored. Here, we report transport properties of ballistic graphene superlattices. This allows us to study and exploit giant non-local resistances with a large valley Hall angle without a magnetic field. In the low-temperature regime, a crossover occurs toward a new state of matter, referred to as a quantum valley Hall state (qVHS), which is an analog of the quantum Hall state without a magnetic field.…
We study the energy spectrum of moiré systems under a uniform magnetic field. The superlattice potential generally broadens Landau levels into Chern bands with finite bandwidth. However, we find that these Chern bands become flat at a discrete set of magnetic fields which we dub "magic zeros". The flat band subspace is generally different from the Landau level subspace in the absence of the moiré superlattice. By developing a semiclassical quantization method and taking account of superlattice induced Bragg reflection, we prove that magic zeros arise from the simultaneous quantization of two d…
We have observed commensurability oscillations (CO) in the Hall resistance $R_{yx}$ of a unidirectional lateral superlattice (ULSL). The CO, having small amplitudes ($\sim$ 1 $Ω$) and being superposed on a roughly three-orders of magnitude larger background, are obtained by directly detecting the difference in $R_{yx}$ between the ULSL area and the adjacent unmodulated two-dimensional electron gas area, and then extracting the odd part with respect to the magnetic field. The CO thus obtained are compared with a theoretical calculation and turn out to have the amplitude much smaller than the th…
Graphene-based superlattices offer a new materials playground to exploit and control a higher number of electronic degrees of freedom, such as charge, spin, or valley for disruptive technologies. Recently, orbital effects, emerging in multivalley band structure lacking inversion symmetry, have been discussed as possible mechanisms for developing orbitronics. Here, we report non-local transport measurements in small gap hBN/graphene/hBN moiré superlattices which reveal very strong magnetic field-induced chiral response which is stable up to room temperature. The measured sign dependence of the …
Flat bands emerging in buckled monolayer graphene superlattices have been recently shown to realize correlated states analogous to those observed in twisted graphene multilayers. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of valley topology driven by competing electronic correlations in buckled graphene superlattices. We show, both by means of atomistic models and a low-energy description, that the existence of long-range electronic correlations leads to a competition between antiferromagnetic and charge density wave instabilities, that can be controlled by means of screening engineering. Interestingl…
Graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) moiré superlattices have attracted interest for use in the study of many-body effects and fractal physics in Dirac fermion systems. Many exotic transport properties have been intensively examined in such superlattices, but previous studies have not focused on single-carrier transport. The investigation of the single-carrier behavior in these superlattices would lead to an understanding of the transition of single-particle/correlated phenomena. Here, we show the single-carrier transport in a high-quality bilayer graphene/hBN superlattice-based quantum dot …
Unlike anomalous quantum Hall insulators, clean single-band chiral superconductors do not exhibit intrinsic Hall effect at the one-loop approximation. Finite ac Hall conductance was found to emerge beyond one-loop, such as with vertex corrections associated with extrinsic random impurity scatterings. In this paper, we investigate the effect of impurities embedded in single-band chiral superconductors in a superlattice pattern, instead of in random distributions. The impurity-induced Bogoliubov quasiparticle bound states hybridize to form subgap bands, constituting an emergent low-energy effect…
As one of paradigmatic phenomena in condensed matter physics, the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in stoichiometric Chern insulators has drawn great interest for years. By using model Hamiltonian analysis and first-principle calculations, we establish a topological phase diagram and map on it with different two-dimensional configurations, which is taken from the recently-grown magnetic topological insulators MnBi4Te7 and MnBi6Te10 with superlattice-like stacking patterns. These configurations manifest various topological phases, including quantum spin Hall effect with and without time-rev…
We investigate the electronic structure of the flat bands induced by moiré superlattices and electric fields in nearly aligned ABC trilayer graphene-boron nitride interfaces where Coulomb effects can lead to correlated gapped phases. Our calculations indicate that valley-spin resolved isolated superlattice flat bands that carry a finite Chern number $C = 3$ proportional to layer number can appear near charge neutrality for appropriate perpendicular electric fields and twist angles. When the degeneracy of the bands is lifted by Coulomb interactions these topological bands can lead to anomalous …
GaAs delta-doped quantum wire superlattice characterization by quantum Hall effect and Shubnikov de Haas oscillations
The propagation of Dirac fermions in graphene through a long-period periodic potential would result in a band folding together with the emergence of a series of cloned Dirac points (DPs). In highly aligned graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (G/hBN) heterostructures, the lattice mismatch between the two atomic crystals generates a unique kind of periodic structure known as a moiré superlattice. Of particular interests is the emergent phenomena related to the reconstructed band-structure of graphene, such as the Hofstadter butterfly, topological currents, gate dependent pseudospin mixing, and ball…

The formation of a superstructure - with a related Moiré pattern - plays a crucial role in the extraordinary optical and electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene, including the recently observed unconventional superconductivity. Here we put forward a novel, interdisciplinary approach to determine the Moiré angle in twisted bilayer graphene based on the photonic spin Hall effect. We show that the photonic spin Hall effect exhibits clear fingerprints of the underlying Moiré pattern, and the associated light beam shifts are well beyond current experimental sensitivities in the near-infra…
