Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable objects that are made with a bunch of spins tightly arranged in a smooth fashion. Their topological nature provides unusual and complex transport properties, such as the skyrmion Hall effect. Extensive Hall data have further revealed asymmetry between skyrmion and antiskyrmion Hall angles, which cannot be accounted by known mechanisms. Here, we explain this asymmetry by utilizing another universal transport coefficient called `Hall viscosity,' extensively studied in quantum Hall systems. Hall viscosity is modeled in steady-state skyrmions motion by generalizing the Thiele equation with a transverse velocity component and is independent of the skyrmion charge. Our analyses, based on available asymmetric Hall angle data, reveal this transverse force amounts 3\% - 5.4\% of the force due to the skyrmion Hall effect. Further clarification of Hall viscosity will be essential for designing next generation storage devices properly, not to mention for our deeper understanding of fundamental properties of nature.
Arising from emergent electromagnetic field of magnetic skyrmions due to their nontrivial topology, the skyrmion Hall effect might be a roadblock for practical applications since any longitudinal motions of skyrmions in nanotrack is accompanied by a transverse motion. A direct consequence of such an effect is easy destruction of skyrmions at the nanotrack edges during their fast motions along the nanotrack, despite their topological protection. Here we propose an entirely novel solution of completely inhibiting such skyrmion Hall effect without affecting its topological properties based on a a…
Magneto-transport properties have been investigated for epitaxial thin films of B20-type MnSi grown on Si(111) substrates. Both Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and topological Hall effect (THE) clearly point to the robust formation of skyrmions over a wide temperature-magnetic field region. New features distinct from those of bulk MnSi are observed for epitaxial MnSi films: a shorter (nearly half) period of the spin helix and skyrmions, and an opposite sign of THE. These observations suggest versatile features of skyrmion-induced THE beyond the current understanding.
The intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE) originates from the topology of the Bloch bands in momentum space. The duality between real space and momentum space calls for a spin Hall effect induced from a real space topology in analogy to the topological Hall effect (THE) of skyrmions. We theoretically demonstrate the topological spin Hall effect (TSHE) in which a pure transverse spin current is generated from a skyrmion spin texture.
A moving magnetic skyrmion exhibits transverse deflection. This so-called skyrmion Hall effect has been explained by the Thiele equation. Here, we provide an alternative interpretation of the skyrmion Hall effect based on the dynamics of domain walls enclosing the skyrmion. We relate the spin-torque-induced local rotation of the domain wall segments to the shift of the skyrmion core, explaining the skyrmion Hall effect at the micromagnetic level. Bases on our intuitive interpretation, we also show that the skyrmion Hall effect can be suppressed by combining the spin-transfer and spin-orbit tor…
We review recent progresses towards an understanding of the Skyrmion Hall transport in insulating as well as conducting materials. First, we consider a theoretical breakthrough based on the quantum field theory Ward identity, a first principle analysis, relying on symmetries and conservation laws. Broken parity (inversion) symmetry plays a crucial role in Skyrmion Hall transport. In addition to the well known thermal and electric Hall conductivities, our analysis has led us to the discovery of a new and unforeseen physical quantity, Hall viscosity - an anti-symmetric part of the viscosity tens…
Charged particles exhibit the Hall effect in the presence of magnetic fields. Analogously, ferromagnetic skyrmions with non-zero topological charges and finite fictitious magnetic fields exhibit the skyrmion Hall effect, which is detrimental for applications. The skyrmion Hall effect has been theoretically predicted to vanish for antiferromagnetic skyrmions because the fictitious magnetic field, proportional to net spin density, is zero. We experimentally confirm this prediction by observing current-driven transverse elongation of pinned ferrimagnetic bubbles. Remarkably, the skyrmion Hall eff…
Magnetic skyrmion is a promising building block for developing information storage and computing devices. It can be stabilized in a ferromagnetic thin film with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The moving ferromagnetic skyrmion may show the skyrmion Hall effect, that is, the skyrmion shows a transverse shift when it is driven by a spin current. Here, we numerically and theoretically study the current-driven dynamics of a ferromagnetic nanoscale skyrmion in the presence of the anisotropic DMI, where the skyrmion has an elliptical shape. The skyrmion Hall effect of the elliptical sky…
The area of magnetic skyrmions, with potential revolution in certain applications, in condensed matter physics is considered about a decade old. In this article, we draw the attention of the community to the recent work of Kurumaji et al [Science 365, 914 (2019)] establishing magnetic skyrmion lattice behavior in Gd2PdSi3. We consider it important to bring out the two decades old history, in particular Hall transport anomalies characterizing magnetic skyrmions. The key experimental data in support of the skyrmion lattice that Kurumaji et al present is the observation of topological Hall resist…
A strategy to drive skyrmion motion by a combination of an anisotropy gradient and spin Hall effect has recently been demonstrated. Here, we study the fundamental properties of this type of motion by combining micromagnetic simulations and a generalized Thiele equation. We find that the anisotropy gradient drives the skyrmion mainly along the direction perpendicular to the gradient, due to the conservative part of the torque. There is some slower motion along the direction parallel to the anisotropy gradient due to damping torque. When an appropriate spin Hall torque is added, the skyrmion vel…
Skyrmions are topologically protected, two-dimensional, localized hedgehogs and whorls of spin. Originally invented as a concept in field theory for nuclear interactions, skyrmions are central to a wide range of phenomena in condensed matter. Their realization at room temperature (RT) in magnetic multilayers has generated considerable interest, fueled by technological prospects and the access granted to fundamental questions. The interaction of skyrmions with charge carriers gives rise to exotic electrodynamics, such as the topological Hall effect (THE), the Hall response to an emergent magnet…
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale spin textures touted as next-generation computing elements. When subjected to lateral currents, skyrmions move at considerable speeds. Their topological charge results in an additional transverse deflection known as the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE). While promising, their dynamic phenomenology with current, skyrmion size, geometric effects and disorder remain to be established. Here we report on the ensemble dynamics of individual skyrmions forming dense arrays in Pt/Co/MgO wires by examining over 20,000 instances of motion across currents and fields. The skyrmi…
We observe the signature of zero-field ground-state skyrmions in BiSb topological insulator / MnGa bi-layers by using the topological Hall effect (THE). We observe a large critical interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-Interaction energy (5.0 pJ/m) at the BiSb/MnGa interface that can be tailored by controlling the annealing temperature of the MnGa template. The THE was observed at room temperature even under absence of an external magnetic field, which gives the strong evidence for the existence of thermodynamically stable skyrmions in MnGa/BiSb bi-layers. Our results will give insight into the ro…
We report the critical role of La doping in the topological Hall effect observed in LaxEu1-xO thin films (~ 50 nm) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. When the La doping exceeds 0.036, topological Hall effect emerges, which we attribute to the formation of magnetic skyrmions. Besides, the La doping is found to play a critical role in determining the phases, densities, and sizes of the skyrmions in the LaxEu1-xO thin films. The maximum region of the skyrmion phase diagram is observed on the La0.1Eu0.9O thin film. As the La doping increases, the skyrmion density increases while the skyrmion size de…
Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers. Since their first observation at room temperature, progress has been made in their current-induced manipulation, with fast motion reported in stray-field-coupled multilayers. However, the complex spin textures with hybrid chiralities and large power dissipation in these multilayers limit their practical implementation and the fundamental understanding of their dynamics. Here, we report on the current-driven motion of Néel skyrmions with diameters in the 100-nm range in an ultrathin Pt/Co/MgO …
Magnetic skyrmions are swirling magnetic textures with novel characteristics suitable for future spintronic and topological applications. Recent studies confirmed the room-temperature stabilization of skyrmions in ultrathin ferromagnets. However, such ferromagnetic skyrmions show undesirable topological effect, the skyrmion Hall effect, which leads to their current-driven motion towards device edges, where skyrmions could easily be annihilated by topographic defects. Recent theoretical studies have predicted enhanced current-driven behaviour for antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled skyrmions…
We examine the current-induced dynamics of a skyrmion that is subject to both structural and bulk inversion asymmetry. There arises a hybrid type of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) which is in the form of a mixture of interfacial and bulk DMIs. Examples include crystals with symmetry classes C$_n$ as well as magnetic multilayers composed of a ferromagnet with a noncentrosymmetric crystal and a nonmagnet with strong spin-orbit coupling. As a striking result, we find that, in systems with a hybrid DMI, the spin-orbit-torque-induced skyrmion Hall angle is asymmetric for the two different …
We theoretically study the thermal Hall effect by magnons in skyrmion crystal phases of ferrimagnets in the vicinity of the angular momentum compensation point (CP). To this end, we start by deriving the equation of motion for magnons in the background of an arbitrary equilibrium spin texture, which gives rise to the fictitious electromagnetic field for magnons. As the net spin density varies, the resultant equation of motion interpolates between the relativistic Klein-Gordon equation at CP and the nonrelativistic Schr{ö}dinger-like equation away from it. In skyrmion crystal phases, the right-…
A stable skyrmion, representing the smallest realizable magnetic texture, could be an ideal element for ultra-dense magnetic memories. Here, we review recent progress in the field of skyrmionics, which is concerned with studies of tiny whirls of magnetic configurations for novel memory and logic applications, with a particular emphasis on antiskyrmions. Magnetic antiskyrmions represent analogs of skyrmions with opposite topological charge. Just like skyrmions, antiskyrmions can be stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, as has been demonstrated in a recent experiment. Here, we emp…
Spin-Hall oscillators are promising sources of spin-wave signals for magnonics applications, and can serve as building blocks for magnonic logic in ultralow power computation devices. Here, we analytically and micromagnetically study magnetization dynamics excited in a Spin-Hall oscillator with oblique magnetization when the spin-Hall effect and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction act simultaneously. Our key results are (i) excitation of nonreciprocal spin-waves propagating perpendicularly to the in-plane projection of the static magnetization, (ii) skyrmions generation by pure spin-…
Quantization of topological charges determines the various topological spin textures that are expected to play a key role in future spintronic devices. While the magnetic skyrmion with a unit topological charge Q has been extensively studied, spin textures with other integer valued have not been verified well so far. Here, we report the real-space image, creation, and manipulation of a type of multi Q three-dimensional skyrmionic texture, where a circular spin spiral ties a bunch of skyrmion tubes. We define these objects as skyrmion bundles, and show they have arbitrarily integer values Q fro…
Magnetic skyrmions are highly promising candidates for future spintronic applications such as skyrmion racetrack memories and logic devices. They exhibit exotic and complex dynamics governed by topology and are less influenced by defects, such as edge roughness, than conventionally used domain walls. In particular, their finite topological charge leads to a predicted "skyrmion Hall effect", in which current-driven skyrmions acquire a transverse velocity component analogous to charged particles in the conventional Hall effect. Here, we present nanoscale pump-probe imaging that for the first tim…
The topological Hall effect (THE), as one of the primary manifestations of non-trivial topology of chiral skyrmions, is traditionally used to detect the emergence of skyrmion lattices with locally ferromagnetic order. In this work we demonstrate that the appearance of non-trivial two-dimensional chiral textures with locally {\it anti}-ferromagnetic order can be detected through the spin version of the THE $-$ the topological spin Hall effect (TSHE). Utilizing the semiclassical formalism, here used to combine chiral antiferromagnetic textures with a density functional theory description of the …
B20 phase magnetic materials, such as FeGe, have been of significant interests in recent years because they enable magnetic skyrmions, which can potentially lead to low energy cost spintronic applications. One major effort in this emerging field is the stabilization of skyrmions at room temperature and zero external magnetic field. We report the growth of phase-pure FeGe epitaxial thin films on Si(111) substrates by ultrahigh vacuum off-axis sputtering. The high crystalline quality of the FeGe films was confirmed by x-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Hall effect m…

We carry out density functional theory calculations which demonstrate that the electron dynamics in the skyrmion phase of Fe-rich Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge alloys is governed by Berry phase physics. We observe that the magnitude of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, directly related to the mixed space-momentum Berry phases, changes sign and magnitude with concentration $x$ in direct correlation with the data of Shibata {\it et al.}, Nature Nanotech. {\bf 8}, 723 (2013). The computed anomalous and topological Hall effects in FeGe are also in good agreement with available experiments. We further de…
