Non-Hermitian extensions of the Anderson and Aubry-André-Harper models are attracting a considerable interest as platforms to study localization phenomena, metal-insulator and topological phase transitions in disordered non-Hermitian systems. Most of available studies, however, resort to numerical results, while few analytical and rigorous results are available owing to the extraordinary complexity of the underlying problem. Here we consider a parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric extension of the Aubry-André-Harper model, undergoing a topological metal-insulator phase transition, and provide rigorous analytical results of energy spectrum, symmetry breaking phase transition and localization length. In particular, by extending to the non-Hermitian realm the Thouless$^{\prime}$s result relating localization length and density of states, we derive an analytical form of the localization length in the insulating phase, showing that -- like in the Hermitian Aubry-André-Harper model-- the localization length is independent of energy.
The Aubry-André or Harper (AAH) model has been the subject of extensive theoretical research in the context of quantum localization. Recently, it was shown that one-dimensional quasicrystals described by the incommensurate AAH model has a nontrivial topology. In this Letter, we show that the commensurate off-diagonal AAH model is topologically nontrivial in the gapless regime and supports zero-energy edge modes. Unlike the incommensurate case, the nontrivial topology in the off-diagonal AAH model is attributed to the topological properties of the one-dimensional Majorana chain. We discuss the …

We study the high temperature transport behavior of the Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model, both in the isolated thermodynamic limit and in the open system. At the critical point of the AAH model, we find hints of super-diffusive behavior from the scaling of spread of an initially localized wavepacket. On the other hand, when connected to two baths with different chemical potentials at the two ends, we find that the critical point shows clear sub-diffusive scaling of current with system size. We provide an explanation of this by showing that the current scaling with system-size is entirely governe…
Observing critical phases in lattice models is challenging due to the need to analyze the finite time or size scaling of observables. We study how the computational topology technique of persistent homology can be used to characterize phases of a generalized Aubry-André-Harper model. The persistent entropy and mean squared lifetime of features obtained using persistent homology behave similarly to conventional measures (Shannon entropy and inverse participation ratio) and can distinguish localized, extended, and crticial phases. However, we find that the persistent entropy also clearly disting…
Aubry-Andre Harper (AAH) lattice models, characterized by reflection-asymmetric, sinusoidally varying nearest-neighbor tunneling profile, are well-known for their topological properties. We consider the fate of such models in the presence of balanced gain and loss potentials $\pm iγ$ located at reflection-symmetric sites. We predict that these models have a finite $\mathcal{PT}$ breaking threshold only for {\it specific locations} of the gain-loss potential, and uncover a hidden symmetry that is instrumental to the finite threshold strength. We also show that the topological edge-states remain…
We numerically study the evolution of spectral correlations in the entanglement Hamiltonian (EH) of non-interacting fermions in the Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model. We analyze the time evolution of the EH spectrum in a nonequilibrium setting by studying several quantities: spectral distribution, level statistics, entanglement entropy, and spectral form factor (SFF) in the context of the delocalization-localization transition in the AAH model. It is observed that the SFF of the entanglement spectrum in the delocalized phase and at the phase-transition point evolves in three-time intervals. We ma…

Non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems are a fascinating subject to be explored. Using the generalized density matrix renormalisation group method and complementary exact diagonalization, we elucidate the many-body ground states and dynamics of a 1D interacting non-Hermitian Aubry-Andre-Harper model for bosons. We find stable ground states in the superfluid and Mott insulating regimes under wide range of conditions in this model. We reveal a skin superfluid state induced by the non-Hermiticity from the nonreciprocal hopping. We investigate the topology of the Mott insulating phase and find it…
The population evolution of single excitation is studied in the Aubry- André- Harper (AAH) model coupled to a $d (=1,2,3)$-dimensional simple lattices bath with a focus on the effect of localization in the system and the dimensionality of bath. By performing a precise evaluation of time-independent Schrödinger equation, the reduced energy levels of the system can be determined. It is found that the reduce energy levels show significant relevance for the bath dimensions. Subsequently, the time evolution of excitation is studied in both the system and bath. It is found that excitation in the sys…
The Aubry-André-Harper model provides a paradigmatic example of aperiodic order in a one-dimensional lattice displaying a delocalization-localization phase transition at a finite critical value $V_c$ of the quasiperiodic potential amplitude $V$. In terms of dynamical behavior of the system, the phase transition is discontinuous when one measures the quantum diffusion exponent $δ$ of wave packet spreading, with $δ=1$ in the delocalized phase $V<V_c$ (ballistic transport), $δ\simeq 1/2$ at the critical point $V=V_c$ (diffusive transport), and $δ=0$ in the localized phase $V>V_c$ (dynamical local…
In this work, the exact dynamics of excitation in the generalized Aubry-André-Harper model coupled with an Ohmic-type environment is discussed by evaluating the survival probability and inverse participation ratio of the state of system. In contrast to the common belief that localization will preserve the information of the initial state in the system against dissipation into the environment, our study found that strong localization can enhance the dissipation of quantum information instead. By a thorough examination of the dynamics, we show that the coherent transition between the energy stat…
We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of the one-dimension Aubry-André-Harper model with $p$-wave superconductivity by changing the potential strength with slow and sudden quench. Firstly, we study the slow quench dynamics from localized phase to critical phase by linearly decreasing the potential strength $V$. The localization length is finite and its scaling obeys the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. The results show that the second-order phase transition line shares the same critical exponent $zν$, giving the correlation length $ν=0.997$ and dynamical exponent $z=1.373$, which are different fro…

We have investigated scaling properties near the quantum critical point between the extended phase and the critical phase in the Aubry-André-Harper model with p-wave pairing, which have rarely been exploited as most investigations focus on the localization transition from the critical phase to the localized phase. We find that the spectrum averaged entanglement entropy and the generalized fidelity susceptibility act as eminent universal order parameters of the corresponding critical point without gap closing. We introduce a Widom scaling ansatz for these criticality probes to develop a unified…
We study the localization-delocalization transition of Floquet eigenstates in a driven fermionic chain with an incommensurate Aubry-André potential and a hopping amplitude which is varied periodically in time. Our analysis shows the presence of a mobility edge separating single-particle delocalized states from localized and multifractal states in the Floquet spectrum. Such a mobility edge does not have any counterpart in the static Aubry-André model and exists for a range of drive frequencies near the critical frequency at which the transition occurs. The presence of the mobility edge is shown…
The Aubry-André 1D lattice model describes a particle hopping in a pseudo-random potential. Depending on its strength $λ$, all eigenstates are either localized ($λ>1$) or delocalized ($λ<1$). Near the transition, the localization length diverges like $ξ\sim(λ-1)^{-ν}$ with $ν=1$. We show that when the particle is initially prepared in a localized ground state and the potential strength is slowly ramped down across the transition, then -- in analogy with the Kibble-Zurek mechanism -- it enters the delocalized phase having finite localization length $\hatξ\simτ_Q^{ν/(1+zν)}$. Here $τ_Q$ is ramp/…
We address the statistical orthogonality catastrophe induced by a local quench in the Aubry-André model from the perspective of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. We study the average work and the irreversible work production when quenching the impurity potential in proximity of an orthogonality event. We show how this description is able to capture the level crossings generating the orthogonality and the avoided crossings which causes the plateau-like structures, signature of the Aubry-André spectrum, when considering the full statistics of orthogonality events.
We study the damping dynamics of the single-particle correlation for an open system under periodic and aperiodic order, which is dominated by the Lindblad master equation. In the absence of the aperiodic order, the Liouvillian superoperator exhibits the non-Hermitian skin effect, which leads to unidirectional damping dynamics, dubbed as "chiral damping". Due to the non-Hermitian skin effect, the damping dynamics is boundary sensitive: The long-time damping of such open systems is algebraic under periodic boundary conditions but exponential under open boundary conditions. We reveal the phase tr…
We study out of time ordered correlators (OTOC) in a free fermionic model with a quasi-periodic potential. This model is equivalent to the Aubry-André model and features a phase transition from an extended phase to a localized phase at a non-zero value of the strength of the quasi-periodic potential. We investigate five different time-regimes of interest for out of time ordered correlators; early, wavefront, $x=v_Bt$, late time equilibration and infinite time. For the early time regime we observe a power law for all potential strengths. For the time regime preceding the wavefront we confirm a …
Topological feature has become an intensively studied subject in many fields of physics. As a witness of topological phase, the edge states are topologically protected and may be helpful in quantum information processing. In this paper, we define a measure to quantify the dynamical localization of system and simulate the localization in the 1D Aubry-André model. We find an interesting connection between the edge states and the dynamical localization of the system, this connection may be used as a signature of edge state and topological phase.
Localization properties of particles in one-dimensional incommensurate lattices without interaction are investigated with models beyond the tight-binding Aubry-André (AA) model. Based on a tight-binding t_1 - t_2 model with finite next-nearest-neighbor hopping t_2, we find the localization properties qualitatively different from those of the AA model, signaled by the appearance of mobility edges. We then further go beyond the tight-binding assumption and directly study the system based on the more fundamental single-particle Schrödinger equation. With this approach, we also observe the presenc…
We study a generalized Aubry-Andre model that obeys $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. We observe a robust $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase with respect to system size and disorder strength, where all eigenvalues are real despite the Hamiltonian being non-hermitian. This robust $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase can support an Anderson localization transition, giving a rich phase diagram as a result of the interplay between disorder and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. Our model provides a perfect platform to study disorder-driven localization phenomena in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system.
We investigate a variant of the Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model corresponding to a bosonic optical lattice of ultra cold atoms under an effective oscillatory magnetic field. In the limit of high frequency oscillation, the system maybe approximated by an effective time independent Hamiltonian. We have studied localization/delocalization transition exhibited by the effective Hamiltonian. The effective Hamiltonian is found to retain the tight binding tri-diagonal form in position space. In a striking contrast to the usual AAH model, this non-dual system shows an energy dependent mobility edge - a …
A recent experiment by P. Bordia et al. (Periodically Driving a Many Body Localized Quantum System, Nat Phys, Jan 2017) has demonstrated that periodically modulating the potential of a localised many-body quantum system described by the Aubry-André Hamiltonian with on-site interactions can lead to a many-body localisation-delocalisation transition, provided the modulation amplitude is big enough. Here, we consider the noninteracting counterpart of that model in order to explore its phase diagram as a function of the strength of the disordered potential, the driving frequency and its amplitude.…
We study a one-dimensional quasiperiodic system described by the off-diagonal Aubry-André model and investigate its phase diagram by using the symmetry and the multifractal analysis. It was shown in a recent work ({\it Phys. Rev. B} {\bf 93}, 205441 (2016)) that its phase diagram was divided into three regions, dubbed the extended, the topologically-nontrivial localized and the topologically-trivial localized phases, respectively. Out of our expectation, we find an additional region of the extended phase which can be mapped into the original one by a symmetry transformation. More unexpectedly,…
We study the quantum localization phenomena of noninteracting particles in one-dimensional lattices based on tight-binding models with various forms of hopping terms beyond the nearest neighbor, which are generalizations of the famous Aubry-André and noninteracting Anderson model. For the case with deterministic disordered potential induced by a secondary incommensurate lattice (i.e. the Aubry-André model), we identify a class of self dual models, for which the boundary between localized and extended eigenstates are determined analytically by employing a generalized Aubry-André transformation.…
Using synthetic lattices of laser-coupled atomic momentum modes, we experimentally realize a recently proposed family of nearest-neighbor tight-binding models having quasiperiodic site energy modulation that host an exact mobility edge protected by a duality symmetry. These one-dimensional tight-binding models can be viewed as a generalization of the well-known Aubry-André (AA) model, with an energy-dependent self duality condition that constitutes an analytical mobility edge relation. By adiabatically preparing the lowest and highest energy eigenstates of this model system and performing micr…

Bound states and their influence on the dynamics of an one-dimensional tight-binding system subject to environments are studied in this paper. We identify specifically three kinds of bound states. The first is a discrete bound state (DBS), of which the energy level exhibits a gap from the continuum. The DBS exhibits the similar features of localization as the edge states in the system and thus can suppress the decay of system. The second is a bound state in the continuum (BIC), which can suppress the system decay too. It is found that the BIC is intimately connected to the edge mode of the sys…
We have investigated scaling properties of the Aubry-André model and related one-dimensional quasiperiodic Hamiltonians near their localisation transitions. We find numerically that the scaling of characteristic energies near the ground state, usually captured by a single dynamical exponent, does not obey a power law relation. Instead, the scaling behaviour depends strongly on the correlation length in a manner governed by the continued fraction expansion of the irrational number $β$ describing incommensurability in the system. This dependence is, however, found to be universal between a range…
In this research, we analyze two models using the tensor network algorithm. The quantum correlations of a two-qubit system are first studied in different bosonic reservoirs. Both equilibrium and nonequilibrium scenarios are discussed. Non-Markovian effects can improve the survival time of the quantum correlations significantly and weaken the decoherence effect. Non-Markovian dynamics with existing memory can lead to entanglement rebirth in specific scenarios instead of the eventual entanglement decay or death seen in memoryless Markovian cases. The system reaches a steady state quickest in sub…
We investigate a system of fermions trapped in a quasi-periodic potential from an open quantum system theory perspective, designing a protocol in which an impurity atom (a two level system) is coupled to a trapped fermionic cloud described by the non-interacting Aubry-André model. The Fermi system is prepared in a charge density wave state before it starts its relaxation. In this work we focus our attention on the time evolution of the impurity in such an out of equilibrium environment, and study whether the induced dynamics can be classified as Markovian or non-Markovian. We find how the loca…
