Exceptional points, the spectral degeneracy points in the complex parameter space, are fundamental to non-Hermitian quantum systems. The dynamics of non-Hermitian systems in the presence of exceptional points differ significantly from those of Hermitian ones. Here we investigate non-adiabatic transitions in non-Hermitian $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric systems, in which the exceptional points are driven through at finite speed which are quadratic or cubic functions of time. We identity different transmission dynamics separated by exceptional points, and derive analytical approximate formulas for the non-adiabatic transmission probabilities. We discuss possible experimental realizations with a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric non-Hermitian one-dimensional tight-binding optical waveguide lattice.
We propose a novel non-Hermitian adiabatic quantum optimization algorithm. One of the new ideas is to use a non-Hermitian auxiliary "initial'' Hamiltonian that provides an effective level repulsion for the main Hamiltonian. This effect enables us to develop an adiabatic theory which determines ground state much more efficiently than Hermitian methods.
We generalize the concept of population for non-Hermitian systems in different ways and identify the one best suited to characterize adiabaticity. An approximate adiabaticity criterion consistent with this choice is also worked out. Examples are provided for different processes involving two-level atoms with decay.
For a T-periodic non-Hermitian Hamiltonian H(t), we construct a class of adiabatic cyclic states of period T which are not eigenstates of the initial Hamiltonian H(0). We show that the corresponding adiabatic geometric phase angles are real and discuss their relationship with the conventional complex adiabatic geometric phase angles. We present a detailed calculation of the new adiabatic cyclic states and their geometric phases for a non-Hermitian analog of the spin 1/2 particle in a precessing magnetic field.
Adiabatic processes driven by non-Hermitian, time-dependent Hamiltonians may be sped up by generalizing inverse engineering techniques based on Berry's transitionless driving algorithm or on dynamical invariants. We work out the basic theory and examples described by two-level Hamiltonians: the acceleration of rapid adiabatic passage with a decaying excited level and of the dynamics of a classical particle on an expanding harmonic oscillator.
We propose a non-Hermitian generalization of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP), which allows one to increase speed and fidelity of the adiabatic passage. This is done by adding balanced imaginary (gain/loss) terms in the diagonal (bare energy) terms of the Hamiltonian and choosing them such that they cancel exactly the nonadiabatic couplings, providing in this way an effective shortcut to adiabaticity. Remarkably, for a STIRAP using delayed Gaussian-shaped pulses in the counter-intuitive scheme the imaginary terms of the Hamiltonian turn out to be time independent. A possible physica…
A non-Hermitian shortcut to adiabaticity is introduced. By adding an imaginary term in the diagonal elements of the Hamiltonian of a two state quantum system, we show how one can cancel the nonadiabatic losses and perform an arbitrarily fast population transfer, without the need to increase the coupling. We apply this technique to two popular level-crossing models: the Landau-Zener model and the Allen-Eberly model.
As a quantum device, a quantum heat engine (QHE) is described by a Hermitian Hamiltonian. However, since it is an open system, reservoirs have to be imposed phenomenologically without any description in the context of quantum mechanics. A non-Hermitian system is expected to describe an open system which exchanges energy and particles with external reservoirs. Correspondingly, such an exchange can be adiabatic in the context of quantum mechanics. We first propose a non-Hermitian QHE by a concrete simple two-level system, which is an S = 1/2 spin in a complex external magnetic field. The non-Hermi…
It is still a challenge to experimentally realize shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) for a non-Hermitian quantum system since a non-Hermitian quantum system's counterdiabatic driving Hamiltonian contains some unrealizable auxiliary control fields. In this paper, we relax the strict condition in constructing STA and propose a method to redesign a realizable supplementary Hamiltonian to construct non-Hermitian STA. The redesigned supplementary Hamiltonian can be eithersymmetric or asymmetric. For the sake of clearness, we apply this method to an Allen-Eberly model as an example to verify the validi…
We generalize the quantum adiabatic theorem to the non-Hermitian system and build a rigorous adiabaticity condition with respect to the adiabatic phase. The non-Hermitian Hamiltonian inverse engineering method is proposed for the purpose to adiabatically drive a artificial quantum state. For the sake of clearness, we take a concrete two-level system as an example to show the usefulness of the inverse engineering method. The numerical simulation result shows that our scheme can work well even under noise if the parameters are chosen appropriately. We can obtain the desired target state by adjus…
The time evolution of periodically driven non-Hermitian systems is in general non-unitary but can be stable. It is hence of considerable interest to examine the adiabatic following dynamics in periodically driven non-Hermitian systems. We show in this work the possibility of piecewise adiabatic following interrupted by hopping between instantaneous system eigenstates. This phenomenon is first observed in a computational model and then theoretically explained, using an exactly solvable model, in terms of the Stokes phenomenon. In the latter case, the piecewise adiabatic following is shown to be…
We show that the definition of instantaneous eigenstate populations for a dynamical non-self-adjoint system is not obvious. The naive direct extension of the definition used for the self-adjoint case leads to inconsistencies; the resulting artifacts can induce a false inversion of population or a false adiabaticity. We show that the inconsistency can be avoided by introducing geometric phases in another possible definition of populations. An example is given which demonstrates both the anomalous effects and their removal by our approach.
The technique of shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) has attracted broad attention due to their possible applications in quantum information processing and quantum control. However, most studies published so far have been only focused on Hermitian systems under the rotating-wave approximation (RWA). In this paper, we propose a modified STA technique to realize population transfer for a non-Hermitian system without RWA. We work out an exact expression for the control function and present examples consisting of two- and three-level systems with decay to show the theory. The results suggest that the …
A quantum particle in a slowly-changing potential well $V(x,t)=V(x-x_0(εt))$, periodically shaken in time at a slow frequency $ε$, provides an important quantum mechanical system where the adiabatic theorem fails to predict the asymptotic dynamics over time scales longer than $ \sim 1 / ε$. Specifically, we consider a double-well potential $V(x)$ sustaining two bound states spaced in frequency by $ω_0$ and periodically-shaken in complex plane. Two different spatial displacements $x_0(t)$ are assumed: the real spatial displacement $x_0(εt)=A \sin (εt)$, corresponding to ordinary Hermitian shaki…
We discuss the basic theoretical framework for non-Hermitian quantum systems with particular emphasis on the diagonalizability of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and their $GL(1,\mathbb{C})$ gauge freedom, which are relevant to the adiabatic evolution of non-Hermitian quantum systems. We find that the adiabatic evolution is possible only when the eigen-energies are real. The accompanying geometric phase is found to be generally complex and associated with not only the phase of a wavefunction but also its amplitude. The condition for the real geometric phase is laid out. Our results are illustrated …
We investigate high-fidelity multiple beam splitting in Hermitian and non-Hermitian symmetric coupled waveguides with one input and 2N output waveguide channels. In Hermitian systems, we realize adiabatically light splitting in resonant case based on the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) and arbitrary proportion from the middle waveguide to outer waveguides in propagation coefficients mismatch case using shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) technique. In non-Hermitian systems with even waveguides being dissipative, the compact and robust beam splitting can be achieved by eliminating the n…
The dynamics of a periodically driven system whose time evolution is governed by the Schrödinger equation with non-Hermitian Hamiltonians can be perfectly stable. This finding was only obtained very recently and will be enhanced by many exact solutions discovered in this work. The main concern of this study is to investigate the adiabatic following dynamics in such non-Hermitian systems stabilized by periodic driving. We focus on the peculiar behaviour of stable cyclic (Floquet) states in the slow-driving limit. It is found that the stable cyclic states can either behave as intuitively expecte…
In several situations, most notably when describing metastable states, a system can evolve according to an effective non hermitian Hamiltonian. To each eigenvalue of a non hermitian Hamiltonian is associated an eigenstate $\vertϕ\rangle$ which evolves forward in time and an eigenstate $\langleψ\vert$ which evolves backward in time. Quantum measurements on such systems are analyzed in detail with particular emphasis on adiabatic measurements in which the measuring device is coupled weakly to the system. It is shown that in this case the outcome of the measurement of an observable $A$ is the wea…
Non-Hermitian quantum systems with explicit time dependence are of ever-increasing importance. There are only a handful of models that have been analytically studied in this context. Here, a PT-symmetric non-Hermitian $N$-level Landau-Zener type problem with two exceptional points of $N$th order is introduced. The system is Hermitian for asymptotically large times, far away from the exceptional points, and has purely imaginary eigenvalues between the exceptional points. The full Landau-Zener transition probabilities are derived, and found to show a characteristic binomial behaviour. In the adi…
A discretized version of the adiabatic theorem is described with the help of a rule relating a Hermitian operator to its expectation value and variance. The simple initial operator X with known ground state is transformed in a series of N small steps into a more complicated final operator Z with unknown ground state. Each operator along the discretised path in the space of Hermitian matrices is used to measure the state, initially the ground state of X. Measurements similar to the Zeno effect or Renninger's negative measurements modify the state incrementally. This process eventually leads to …
The geometrical Berry phase is key to understanding the behaviour of quantum states under cyclic adiabatic evolution. When generalised to non-Hermitian systems with gain and loss, the Berry phase can become complex, and should modify not only the phase but also the amplitude of the state. Here, we perform the first experimental measurements of the adiabatic non-Hermitian Berry phase, exploring a minimal two-site $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian that is inspired by the Hatano-Nelson model. We realise this non-Hermitian model experimentally by mapping its dynamics to that of a pair of classi…

We in this paper demonstrate that the $PT$-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian for a periodically driven system can be generated from a kernel Hamiltonian by a generalized gauge transformation. The kernel Hamiltonian is Hermitian and static, while the time-dependent transformation operator has to be $PT$ symmetric and non-unitary in general. Biorthogonal sets of eigenstates appear necessarily as a consequence of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We obtain analytically the wave functions and associated non-adiabatic Berry phase $γ_{n}$ for the $n$th eigenstate. The classical version of the non-Hermiti…
We propose a non-Hermitian quantum annealing algorithm which can be useful for solving complex optimization problems. We demonstrate our approach on Grover's problem of finding a marked item inside of unsorted database. We show that the energy gap between the ground and excited states depends on the relaxation parameters, and is not exponentially small. This allows a significant reduction of the searching time. We discuss the relations between the probabilities of finding the ground state and the survival of a quantum computer in a dissipative environment.
Open-system quantum dynamics described by non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonians have become a subject of considerable interest. Studies of non-Hermitian physics have revealed general principles, including relationships between the topology of the complex eigenvalue space and the breakdown of adiabatic control strategies. We study here the control of a single non-Hermitian qubit, similar to recently realized experimental systems in which the non-Hermiticity arises from an open spontaneous emission channel. We review the topological features of the resulting non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and then pre…
We study in this paper the time evolution of $PT$-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian consisting of periodically driven $SU(1,1)$ generators. A non-Hermitian invariant operator is adopted to solve the Schrödinger equation, since the time-dependent Hamiltonian is no longer a conserved quantity. We propose a scheme to construct the non-Hermitian invariant with a $PT$-symmetric but non-unitary transformation operator. The eigenstates of invariant and its complex conjugate form a bi-orthogonal basis to formulate the exact solution. We obtain the non-adiabatic Berry phase, which reduces to the adia…
The well-known geometric phase present in the quantum adiabatic evolution discovered by Berry many years ago has its analogue, the Hannay phase, in the classical domain. We calculate the Berry phase with examples for quantum hermitian and non-hermitian $PT$-symmetric Hamiltonians and compare with the Hannay phase in their classical equivalents. We use the analogy to propose resonant electric circuits which reproduce the theoretical solutions in simulated laboratory experiments.
We discuss the coherent states for PT-/non-PT-Symmetric and non-Hermitian generalized Morse Potential obtained by using path integral formalism over the holomorphic coordinates. We transform the action of generalized Morse potential into two harmonic oscillators with a new parametric time to establish the parametric time coherent states. We calculate the energy eigenvalues and the corresponding wave functions in parabolic coordinates.
We introduce an approach to scattering problems in theories with non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, usually known as PT-symmetric quantum theories, by means of the adiabatic switching of the interaction. The modifications of usual methods needed to employ time-dependent metrics are described. We argue that an analogue of the adiabatic theorem hold for time dependent metrics and that its validity forms a necessary condition for consistency of the procedure.
The non-Hermitian Schrödinger equation is re-expressed generally in the form of Hamilton's canonical equation without any approximation. Its quantization called non-Hermitian quantum field theory is discussed. By virtue of the canonical equation, the theory of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics is totally reformulated, including the probability amplitudes of states, the expectations of operators, as well as the expressions of interaction terms. The conventional difficulties in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics are totally overcome by the reformulation. Specifically, the imaginary parts the non-Herm…
Exceptional points, at which two or more eigenfunctions of a Hamiltonian coalesce, occur in non-Hermitian systems and lead to surprising physical effects. In particular, the behaviour of a system under parameter variation can differ significantly from the familiar Hermitian case in the presence of exceptional points. Here we analytically derive the probability of a non-adiabatic transition in a two-level system driven through two consecutive exceptional points at finite speed. The system is Hermitian far away from the exceptional points. In the adiabatic limit an equal redistribution between t…
The adiabatic approximation in open systems is formulated through the effective Hamiltonian approach. By introducing an ancilla, we embed the open system dynamics into a non-Hermitian quantum dynamics of a composite system, the adiabatic evolution of the open system is then defined as the adiabatic dynamics of the composite system. Validity and invalidity conditions for this approximation are established and discussed. A High-order adiabatic approximation for open systems is introduced. As an example, the adiabatic condition for an open spin-$\frac 1 2$ particle in time-dependent magnetic fiel…
We report on experiments exploring the non-Hermitian dynamics of pairs of two-level atoms tightly confined in an optical lattice and driven by a near-resonant laser. Although spontaneous emission is negligible for the long-lived excited state, two-body dissipation arises from strong inelastic collisions between two atoms in the excited state. We demonstrate quasi-adiabatic control of the internal state of the pairs in the quantum Zeno regime where inelastic losses dominate. Preparing each atom pair in the longest-lived eigenstate of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing the dissipative dyna…
The efficient transfer of excitations between different levels of a quantum system is a task with many applications. Among the various protocols to carry out such a state transfer in driven systems, rapid adiabatic passage (RAP) is one of the most widely used. Here we show both theoretically and experimentally that adding a suitable amount of loss to the driven Hamiltonian turns a RAP protocol into a scheme for encircling an exceptional point including the chiral state transfer associated with it. Our work thus discloses an intimate connection between a whole body of literature on RAP and rece…
We study the dynamics of non-adiabatic transitions in non-Hermitian multi-level parabolic models where the separations of the diabatic energies are quadratic function of time. The model Hamiltonian has been used to describe the non-Hermitian dynamics of two pairs of coupled cavities. In the absence of the coupling between any two pairs of cavities, the wave amplitudes within each subsystem are described by the tri-confluent Heun functions. When all the couplings between the cavities are present, we reduce the dynamics into a set of two coupled tri-confluent Heun equations, from which we derive…
We study theoretically the population transfer in two-level atoms driven by chirped lasers. It is known that in the Hermitian case, the rapid adiabatic passage (RAP) is stable for an above-critical chirp below which the final populations of states Rabi oscillate with varying laser power. We show that if the excited state is represented by a resonance, the separatrix marking this critical phenomenon in the space of the laser pulse parameters emanates from an exceptional point (EP) -- a non-Hermitian singularity formed in the atomic system by the fast laser field oscillations and encircled due t…
We study state conversion in parity-time (PT) symmetry broken non-Hermitian two level system. We construct a theory and explain underlying mechanism for state conversion and define adiabatic evolutions in non-Hermitian systems. The adiabatic theorem can be used if initial state is an instantaneous eigenstate in Hermitian systems. We show that the system can adiabatically follow the modulationally stable instantaneous eigenstate sooner or later, regardless of initial state if the system parameters are varied slowly in non-Hermitian systems. We discuss the topological feature of dynamical circli…
Cheeger inequalities bound the spectral gap $γ$ of a space by isoperimetric properties of that space and vice versa. In this paper, I derive Cheeger-type inequalities for nonpositive matrices (aka stoquastic Hamiltonians), real matrices, and Hermitian matrices. For matrices written $H = L+W$, where $L$ is either a combinatorial or normalized graph Laplacian, I show that: (1) when $W$ is diagonal and $L$ has maximum degree $d_{\max}$, $2h \geq γ\geq \sqrt{h^2 + d_{\max}^2}-d_\max$; (2) when $W$ is real, we can often route negative-weighted edges along positive-weighted edges such that the Cheeg…
We consider quantum dynamics for which the strict adiabatic approximation fails but which do not escape too far from the adiabatic limit. To treat these systems we introduce a generalisation of the time dependent wave operator theory which is usually used to treat dynamics which do not escape too far from an initial subspace called the active space. Our generalisation is based on a time dependent adiabatic deformation of the active space. The geometric phases associated with the almost adiabatic representation are also derived. We use this formalism to study the adiabaticity of a dynamics surr…
We consider the space of $n \times n$ non-Hermitian Hamiltonians ($n=2$, $3$, . . .) that are equivalent to a single $n\times n$ Jordan block. We focus on adiabatic transport around a closed path (i.e. a loop) within this space, in the limit as the time-scale $T=1/\varepsilon$ taken to traverse the loop tends to infinity. We show that, for a certain class of loops and a choice of initial state, the state returns to itself and acquires a complex phase that is $\varepsilon^{-1}$ times an expansion in powers of $\varepsilon^{1/n}$. The exponential of the term of $n$th order (which is equivalent t…
In the Hermitian regime, a Berry phase is always the real number. It may be imaginary for a non-Hermitian system, which leads to amplitude amplification or attenuation of an evolved quantum state. We study the dynamics of the non-Hermitian Rice-Mele model driven by a time-dependent external field. The exact results show that it can have full real spectrum for any value of the field. Several rigorous results are presented for the Berry phase with respect to the varying field. We show that the Berry phase is the same complex constant for any initial state in a single sub-band. Numerical simulati…
We demonstrate that with an optimally tuned scheduling function, adiabatic quantum computing (AQC) can readily solve a quantum linear system problem (QLSP) with $\mathcal{O}(κ~\text{poly}(\log(κ/ε)))$ runtime, where $κ$ is the condition number, and $ε$ is the target accuracy. This is near optimal with respect to both $κ$ and $ε$. Our method is applicable to general non-Hermitian matrices, and the cost as well as the number of qubits can be reduced when restricted to Hermitian matrices, and further to Hermitian positive definite matrices. The success of the time-optimal AQC implies that the qua…
We study a non-Hermitian Rice-Mele model without breaking time-reversal symmetry, with the non-Hermiticity arising from imbalanced hopping rates. The Berry connection, Berry curvature and Chern number are introduced in the context of biorthonormal inner product. It is shown that for a bulk system, although the Berry connection can be complex numbers, the Chern number is still quantized, as topological invariant. For an opened chain system, the mid-gap edge modes are obtained exactly, obeying the bulk-edge correspondence. Furthermore, we also introduce a local current in the context of biorthon…
