In several situations, most notably when describing metastable states, a system can evolve according to an effective non hermitian Hamiltonian. To each eigenvalue of a non hermitian Hamiltonian is associated an eigenstate $\vertϕ\rangle$ which evolves forward in time and an eigenstate $\langleψ\vert$ which evolves backward in time. Quantum measurements on such systems are analyzed in detail with particular emphasis on adiabatic measurements in which the measuring device is coupled weakly to the system. It is shown that in this case the outcome of the measurement of an observable $A$ is the weak value $\langleψ\vert A\vertϕ\rangle / \langleψ\vertϕ\rangle $ associated to the two-state vector $\langleψ\vert$ $\vertϕ\rangle$ corresponding to one of the eigenvalues of the non hermitian Hamiltonian. The possibility of performing such measurements in a laboratory is discussed.
The method of calculation of the resonance characteristics is developed for the metastable states of the Coulomb three-body (CTB) system with two disintegration channels. The energy dependence of K-matrix in the resonance region is calculated with the use of the stabilization method. Resonance position and partial widths are obtained by fitting the numerically calculated K(E)-matrix with the help of the generalized Breit-Wigner formula.
The adiabatic quantum algorithm has drawn intense interest as a potential approach to accelerating optimization tasks using quantum computation. The algorithm is most naturally realised in systems which support Hamiltonian evolution, rather than discrete gates. We explore an alternative approach in which slowly varying measurements are used to mimic adiabatic evolution. We show that for certain Hamiltonians, which remain frustration-free all along the adiabatic path, the necessary measurements can be implemented through the measurement of random terms from the Hamiltonian. This offers a new, a…
Interaction-free measurement is a surprising consequence of quantum interference, where the presence of objects can be sensed without any disturbance of the object being measured. Here we show an extension of interaction-free measurement using techniques from spatial adiabatic passage, specifically multiple reciever adiabatic passage. Due to subtle properties of the adiabatic passage, it is possible image an object without interaction between the imaging photons and the sample. The technique can be used on multiple objects in parallel, and is entirely deterministic in the adiabatic limit. Unli…
A cluster state cannot be a unique ground state of a two-body interacting Hamiltonian. Here, we propose the creation of a cluster state of logical qubits encoded in spin-1/2 particles by adiabatically weakening two-body interactions. The proposal is valid for any spatial dimensional cluster states. Errors induced by thermal fluctuations and adiabatic evolution within finite time can be eliminated ensuring fault-tolerant quantum computing schemes.
When measuring a complex quantum system, we are often interested in only a few degrees of freedom-the plant, while the rest of them are collected as auxiliary modes-the bath. The bath can have finite memory (non-Markovian), and simply ignoring its dynamics, i.e., adiabatically eliminating it, will prevent us from predicting the true quantum behavior of the plant. We generalize the technique introduced by Strunz et. al. [Phys. Rev. Lett 82, 1801 (1999)], and develop a formalism that allows us to eliminate the bath non-adiabatically in continuous quantum measurements, and obtain a non-Markovian …
We propose a compact atom interferometer to measure homogeneous constant forces guiding the arms via shortcuts to adiabatic paths. For a given sensitivity, which only depends on the space-time area of the guiding paths, the cycle time can be made fast without loosing visibility. The atom is driven by spin-dependent trapping potentials moving in opposite directions, complemented by linear and time-dependent potentials that compensate the trap acceleration. Thus the arm states are adiabatic in the moving frames, and non-adiabatic in the laboratory frame. The trapping potentials may be anharmonic…
It is challenged only recently that the precision attainable in any measurement of a physical parameter is fundamentally limited by the quantum Cramér-Rao Bound (QCRB). Here, targeting at measuring parameters in strongly dissipative systems, we propose an innovative measurement scheme called {\it dissipative adiabatic measurement} and theoretically show that it can beat the QCRB. Unlike projective measurements, our measurement scheme, though consuming more time, does not collapse the measured state and, more importantly, yields the expectation value of an observable as its measurement outcome,…
Adiabatic quantum control protocols have been of wide interest to quantum computation due to their robustness and insensitivity to their actual duration of execution. As an extension of previous quantum learning algorithms, this work proposes to execute some quantum learning protocols based entirely on adiabatic quantum evolution, hence dubbed as ``adiabatic quantum learning". In a conventional quantum machine learning protocol, the output is usually the expectation value of a pre-selected observable and the projective measurement of which forces a quantum circuit to run many times to obtain t…
An adiabatic method for a single-shot non-demolition measurement of the phase qubit is suggested. The qubit is inductively coupled to a low-frequency resonator, which in turn is connected with a classical measurement device (phase meter). The resonator drives adiabatic oscillations of the supercurrent in the qubit loop. The back reaction of the qubit loop on the resonator depends on the qubit state. Measuring the phase shift of the resonator's oscillations one can determine the state of the qubit. Numerical computations with available experimental parameters show that the phase difference betw…
Adiabatic elimination is a perturbative model reduction technique based on timescale separation and often used to simplify the description of composite quantum systems. We here analyze a quantum experiment where the perturbative expansion can be carried out to arbitrary order, such that: (i) we can formulate in the end an exact reduced model in quantum form; (ii) as the series provides accuracy for ever larger parameter values, we can discard any condition on the timescale separation, thereby analyzing the intermediate regime where the actual experiment is performing best; (iii) we can clarify…
Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in metastable helium at room temperature is experimentally shown to exhibit light storage capabilities for intermediate values of the detuning between the coupling and probe beams and the center of the atomic Doppler profiles. An additional phase shift is shown to be imposed to the retrieved pulse of light when the EIT protocol is performed at non-zero optical detunings. The value of this phase shift is measured for different optical detunings between 0 and 2 GHz, and its origin is discussed.
We have investigated the ultracold interspecies scattering properties of metastable triplet He and Rb. We performed state-of-the-art ab initio calculations of the relevant interaction potential, and measured the interspecies elastic cross section for an ultracold mixture of metastable triplet $^4$He and $^{87}$Rb in a quadrupole magnetic trap at a temperature of 0.5 mK. Our combined theoretical and experimental study gives an interspecies scattering length $a_{4+87}=+17^{+1}_{-4}$ $a_0$, which prior to this work was unknown. More general, our work shows the possibility of obtaining accurate sc…
Metastability is a quintessential feature of first order quantum phase transitions, which is lost either by dynamical instability or by nucleating bubbles of a true vacuum through quantum tunneling. By considering a drive across the first order quantum phase transition in the quantum Ising chain in the presence of both transverse and longitudinal fields, we reveal multiple regions in the parameter space where the initial metastable state loses its metastability in successive stages. The mechanism responsible is found to be semi-degenerate resonant tunnelings to states with specific bubble size…
Measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC) and holonomic quantum computation (HQC) are two very different computational methods. The computation in MBQC is driven by adaptive measurements executed in a particular order on a large entangled state. In contrast in HQC the system starts in the ground subspace of a Hamiltonian which is slowly changed such that a transformation occurs within the subspace. Following the approach of Bacon and Flammia, we show that any measurement-based quantum computation on a graph state with \emph{gflow} can be converted into an adiabatically driven holonomic comp…
Recently we have reported (Knoop et al. [arXiv:1404.4826]) on an experimental determination of metastable triplet $^4$He+$^{87}$Rb scattering length by performing thermalization measurements for an ultracold mixture in a quadrupole magnetic trap. Here we present our experimental apparatus and elaborate on these thermalization measurements. In particular we give a theoretical description of interspecies thermalization rate for a quadrupole magnetic trap, i. e. in the presence of Majorana heating, and a general procedure to extract the scattering length from the elastic cross section at finite t…
I describe one quantum approach to solving 3-satisfiability (3-SAT), the well known problem in computer science. The approach is based on repeatedly measuring the truth value of the clauses forming the 3-SAT proposition using a non-orthogonal basis. If the basis slowly evolves then there is a strong analogy to adiabatic quantum computing, although the approach is entirely circuit-based. To solve a 3-SAT problem of n variables requires a quantum register of $n$ qubits, or more precisely rebits i.e. qubits whose phase need only be real. For cases of up to n=26 qubits numerical simulations indica…
The time evolution and the asymptotic outcome of a Landau-Zener-Stueckelberg-Majorana (LZ) process under continuous weak non-selective measurement is analyzed. We compare two measurement protocols in which the populations of either the adiabatic or the non-adiabatic levels are (continuously and weakly) monitored. The weak measurement formalism, described using a Gaussian Kraus operator, leads to a time evolution characterized by a Markovian dephasing process, which, in the non-adiabatic measurement protocol is similar to earlier studies of LZ dynamics in a dephasing environment. Casting the pr…
Models of quantum computation are important because they change the physical requirements for achieving universal quantum computation (QC). For example, one-way QC requires the preparation of an entangled "cluster" state followed by adaptive measurement on this state, a set of requirements which is different from the standard quantum circuit model. Here we introduce a model based on one-way QC but without measurements (except for the final readout), instead using adiabatic deformation of a Hamiltonian whose initial ground state is the cluster state. This opens the possibility to use the copiou…

In a `shortcut-to-adiabaticity' (STA) protocol, the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian, which suppresses the non-adiabatic transition of a reference `adiabatic' trajectory, induces a quantum uncertainty of the work cost in the framework of quantum thermodynamics. Following a theory derived recently [Funo et al 2017 Phys. Rev. Lett. 118 100602], we perform an experimental measurement of the STA work statistics in a high-quality superconducting Xmon qubit. Through the frozen-Hamiltonian and frozen-population techniques, we experimentally realize the two-point measurement of the work distribution for g…
Mach-Zehnder interferometer, a powerful tool for a wide variety of measurements, has been realized with Bose-Einstein condensates in recent experiments. In this report, we propose and analyze a realizable scheme for performing a Heisenberg-limited Mach-Zehnder interferometry with dipolar spin-1 condensate. Based upon adiabatic processes of sweeping the transverse magnetic field, we demonstrate a perfect phase transition, which accomplishes the beam splitter, phase shifter and recombiner as for a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The attractive dipolar interaction ensures the existence of a path-ent…
The aim of quantum metrology is to estimate target parameters as precisely as possible. In this paper, we consider quantum metrology based on symmetry-protected adiabatic transformation. We introduce a ferromagnetic Ising model with a transverse field as a probe and consider the estimation of a longitudinal field. Without the transverse field, the ground state of the probe is given by the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state, and thus the Heisenberg limit estimation of the longitudinal field can be achieved through parity measurement. In our scheme, full information of the longitudinal field enco…
We present a unified approach to study continuous measurement based quantum thermal machines in static as well as adiabatically driven systems. We investigate both steady state and transient dynamics for the time-independent case. In the adiabatically driven case, we show how measurement based thermodynamic quantities can be attributed geometric characteristics. We also provide the appropriate definition for heat transfer and dissipation owing to continous measurement in the presence and absence of adiabatic driving. We illustrate the aforementioned ideas and study the phenomena of refrigerati…
A discretized version of the adiabatic theorem is described with the help of a rule relating a Hermitian operator to its expectation value and variance. The simple initial operator X with known ground state is transformed in a series of N small steps into a more complicated final operator Z with unknown ground state. Each operator along the discretised path in the space of Hermitian matrices is used to measure the state, initially the ground state of X. Measurements similar to the Zeno effect or Renninger's negative measurements modify the state incrementally. This process eventually leads to …
We study quantum adiabatic dynamics, where the slowly moving field is influenced by system's state (feedback). The information for the feedback is gained from non-disturbating measurements done on an ensemble of identical non-interacting systems. The situation without feedback is governed by the adiabatic theorem: adiabatic energy level populations stay constant, while the adiabatic eigenvectors get a specific phase contribution (Berry phase). However, under feedback the adiabatic theorem does not hold: the adiabatic populations satisfy a closed equation of motion that coincides with the repli…
We propose to take advantage of the weak coupling of ground-state helium-3 nuclear spin to its environment to produce long-lived macroscopic quantum states, nuclear spin squeezed states, in a gas cell at room temperature. To perform a quantum non-demolition measurement of a transverse component of the polarized collective nuclear spin, we maintain a population in helium-3 metastable state with a discharge. The collective spin associated to $F=1/2$ metastable level hybridizes with the ground state one by metastability exchange collisions. To access nuclear spin fluctuations, one continuously me…
In order to understand quantum decoherence of a quantum system due to its interaction with a large system behaving classically, we introduce the concept of adiabatic quantum entanglement based on the Born-Oppenhemeir approximation. In the adiabatic limit, it is shown that the wave function of the total system formed by the quantum system plus the large system can be factorized as an entangled state with correlation between adiabatic quantum states and quasi-classical motion configurations of the large system. In association with a novel viewpoint about quantum measurement, which has been direc…
An ever broader range of physical platforms provides the possibility to study and engineer quantum dynamics under continuous measurements. In many experimental arrangements the system of interest is monitored by means of an ancillary device, whose sole purpose is to transduce the signal from the system to the measurement apparatus. Here, we present a method of adiabatic elimination when the transducer consists of an arbitrary number of bosonic modes with Gaussian dynamics while the measured object can be any quantum system. Crucially, our approach can cope with the highly relevant case of fini…
We study the back-action of a nearby measurement device on electrons undergoing coherent transfer via adiabatic passage (CTAP) in a triple-well system. The measurement is provided by a quantum point contact capacitively coupled to the middle well, thus acting as a detector sensitive to the charge configuration of the triple-well system. We account for this continuous measurement by treating the whole {triple-well + detector} as a closed quantum system. This leads to a set of coupled differential equations for the density matrix of the enlarged system which we solve numerically. This approach a…
We study the detection of electrons undergoing coherent transfer via adiabatic passage (CTAP) in a triple quantum-dot system with a quantum point-contact sensing the change of the middle dot. In the ideal scenario, the protocol amounts to perfect change transfer between the external dots with vanishing occupation of the central dot at all times, rendering the measurement and its backaction moot. Nevertheless, even with minor corrections to the protocol, a small population builds up in the central dot. We study the measurement backaction by a Bayesian formalism simulation of an instantaneous de…
The ground state susceptibility of a system consisting of three flux-qubits was measured in the complete three dimensional flux space around the common degeneracy point of the qubits. The system's Hamiltonian could be completely reconstructed from measurements made far away from the common degeneracy point. The subsequent measurements made around this point show complete agreement with the theoretical predictions which follow from this Hamiltonian. The ground state anti-crossings of the system could be read-out directly from these measurements. This allows one to determine the ground-state flu…
We introduce an efficient, quasideterministic scheme to generate maximally entangled states of two atomic ensembles. The scheme is based on quantum nondemolition measurements of total atomic populations and on adiabatic quantum feedback conditioned by the measurements outputs. The high efficiency of the scheme is tested and confirmed numerically for ideal photodetection as well as in the presence of losses.
