Double field theory and exceptional field theory are formulations of supergravity that make certain dualities manifest symmetries of the action. To achieve this, the geometry is extended by including dual coordinates corresponding to winding modes of the fundamental objects. This geometrically unifies the spacetime metric and the gauge fields (and their local symmetries) in a generalized geometry. Solutions to these extended field theories take the simple form of waves and monopoles in the extended space. From a supergravity point of view they appear as 1/2 BPS objects such as the string, the membrane and the fivebrane in ordinary spacetime. In this thesis double field theory and exceptional field theory are introduced, solutions to their equations of motion are constructed and their properties are analyzed. Further it is established how isometries in the extended space give rise to duality relations between the supergravity solutions. Extensions to these core ideas include studying Goldstone modes, probing singularities at the core of solutions and localizing them in winding space. The relation of exceptional field theory to F-theory is also covered providing an action for the latter and incorporating the duality between M-theory and F-theory.
On a supersymmetric sigma model the covariantly constant forms are related to the conserved currents that are generators of a super W-algebra extending the superconformal algebra. The existence of covariantly constant forms restricts the holonomy group of the manifold. Via duality transformation we get new covariantly constant forms, thus restricting the holonomy group of the new manifold.
A manifestly Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariant form for the abelian gauge field action with local duality symmetry of Schwarz and Sen is given. Some of the underlying symmetries of the covariant action are further considered. The Noether conserved charge under continuous local duality rotations is found. The covariant couplings with gravity and the axidilaton field are discussed.
We explore the role of the dilaton field on higher derivative supergravity within the framework of Double Field Theory and use it to fix the Lorentz non covariant field redefinitions connecting the metric and dilaton fields with the duality multiplets.
We study the construction of covariant nonlinear duality-symmetric actions in dual formulation. Essentially, the construction is the PST-covariantisation and nonlinearisation of Zwanziger action. The covariantisation made use of three auxiliary scalar fields. Apart from these, the construction proceed in a similar way to that of the standard formulation. For example, the theories can be extended to include interactions with external fields, and that the theories possess two local PST symmetries. We then explicitly demonstrate the construction of covariant nonlinear duality-symmetric actions in…
We present a manifestly duality covariant formulation of the composite non-BPS and almost-BPS systems of multi-centre black hole solutions in four dimensions. The method of nilpotent orbits is used to define the two systems in terms of first order flow equations that transform covariantly under the duality group. Subsequently, we rewrite both systems of equations in terms of real, manifestly duality covariant, linear systems of Poisson equations. Somewhat unexpectedly, we find that the two systems are naturally described by the same equations involving space dependent abelian isometries that a…
It is known that non-holomorphic corrections are necessary in order to get duality invariant free energy and entropy function. However the present methods of incorporating non-holomorphic corrections are in conflict with special geometry properties of moduli space. The moduli fields do not transform in duality covariant way and their duality transformation also involves the graviphoton field strength. In the present note we construct duality covariant moduli fields for STU-model perturbatively in powers of the graviphoton field strength and demonstrated their existence upto second order.
We describe a systematic way of the generalization, to models with non-linear duality, of the space-time covariant and duality-invariant formulation of duality-symmetric theories in which the covariance of the action is ensured by the presence of a single auxiliary scalar field. It is shown that the duality-symmetric action should be invariant under the two local symmetries characteristic of this approach, which impose constraints on the form of the action similar to those of Gaillard and Zumino and in the non-covariant formalism. We show that the (twisted) self-duality condition obtained from…
A manifestly U-duality covariant approach to M-theory cosmology is developed and applied to cosmologies in dimensions D=4,5. Cosmological properties such as expansion powers and Hubble parameters turn out to be U-duality invariant in certain asymptotic regions. U-duality transformations acting on cosmological solutions, on the other hand, shift the transition time between two asymptotic regions and determine the details of the transition. Moreover, in D=5, we show that U-duality can map expanding negative and positive branch solutions into each other.
We demonstrate that an action proposed by A. Khoudeir and N. R. Pantoja in {\sl Phys. Rev.} {\bf D53}, 5974 (1996) for endowing Maxwell theory with manifest electric--magnetic duality symmetry contains, besides the Maxwell field, additional propagating vector degrees of freedom. Hence it cannot be considered as a duality symmetric action for a {\it single} abelian gauge field.
We perform the covariant operator quantization of the spin-$1$ model in $2+1$ spacetime dimensions to rigorously establish its dualities. For this purpose, the Kugo-Ojima-Nakanishi formalism, based on an indefinite metric Hilbert space in the Heisenberg picture, is used. We show that it is possible to extract a massive physical excitation constructed from a linear combination of the vector field $A_μ$ and the $B$-field. In turn, we also show that this excitation generates the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. This is achieved by exploring the two-point function of the vector field.
We generalise the notions of supersymmetry and superspace by allowing generators and coordinates transforming according to more general Lorentz representations than the spinorial and vectorial ones of standard lore. This yields novel SO(3,1)-covariant superspaces, which we call hyperspaces, having dimensionality greater than (4|4) of traditional super-Minkowski space. As an application, we consider gauge fields on complexifications of these superspaces; and extending the concept of self-duality, we obtain classes of completely solvable equations analogous to the four-dimensional self-duality e…
We perform the antifield BRST quantization of duality-symmetric Maxwell theory and show explicitly the quantum equivalence of the different formulations (covariant and non-covariant). The non-covariant gauge-fixed action is used in the computation of propagators for this model.
It is argued that the formal rules of correspondence between local observation procedures and observables do not exhaust the entire physical content of generally covariant quantum field theory. This result is obtained by expressing the distinguishing features of the local kinematical structure of quantum field theory in the generally covariant context in terms of a translocal structure which carries the totality of the nonlocal kinematical informations in a local region. This gives rise to a duality principle at the dynamical level which emphasizes the significance of the underlying translocal…
We compute the one-loop β-functions describing the renormalisation of the coupling constant λand the frequency parameter Ωfor the real four-dimensional duality-covariant noncommutative ϕ^4-model, which is renormalisable to all orders. The contribution from the one-loop four-point function is reduced by the one-loop wavefunction renormalisation, but the β_λ-function remains non-negative. Both β_λand β_Ωvanish at the one-loop level for the duality-invariant model characterised by Ω=1. Moreover, β_Ωalso vanishes in the limit Ω\to 0, which defines the standard noncommutative ϕ^4-quantum field theo…
Duality covariant curvature and torsion tensors in double field theory/generalized geometry are central in analyzing consistent truncations, generalized dualities, and related integrable $σ$-models. They are constructed systematically with the help of a larger, auxiliary space in a procedure inspired by Cartan geometry originally proposed by Poláček and Siegel for bosonic strings. It pivots around a maximally isotropic group that captures the generalized structure group of the physical space. We show how dropping the isotropy condition on this group allows us to describe heterotic/type I strin…
We study extremal black hole solutions to four dimensional N=2 supergravity based on a cubic symmetric scalar manifold. Using the coset construction available for these models, we define the first order flow equations implied by the corresponding nilpotency conditions on the three-dimensional scalar momenta for the composite non-BPS class of multi-centre black holes. As an application, we directly solve these equations for the single-centre subclass, and write the general solution in a manifestly duality covariant form. This includes all single-centre under-rotating non-BPS solutions, as well …
We construct the full effective action including DBI and WZ terms for solitonic 5-branes covariant under T-duality. The result is a completion of results known in the literature to a full T-duality covariant expression. The covariant WZ action includes previously omitted R-R terms. The obtained full covariant effective action reproduces the one obtained by S-duality from the D5-brane upon the correct choice of the covariant charge.
We prove that a scalar quantum field theory defined on noncommutative Minkowski spacetime with noncommuting momentum coordinates is covariant with respect to the UV/IR duality which exchanges coordinates and momenta. The proof is based on suitable resonance expansions of charged noncommutative scalar fields in a background electric field, which yields an effective description of the field theory in terms of a coupled complex two-matrix model. The two independent matrix degrees of freedom ensure unitarity and manifest CT-invariance of the field theory. The formalism describes an analytic contin…
We extend the techniques of double field theory to more general gravity theories and U-duality symmetries, having in mind applications to the complete D=11 supergravity. In this paper we work out a (3+3)-dimensional `U-duality covariantization' of D=4 Einstein gravity, in which the Ehlers group SL(2,R) is realized geometrically, acting in the 3 representation on half of the coordinates. We include the full (2+1)-dimensional metric, while the `internal vielbein' is a coset representative of SL(2,R)/SO(2) and transforms under gauge transformations via generalized Lie derivatives. In addition, we…
We show that the one- and two-loop $β$-functions of the closed, bosonic string can be written in a manifestly O($D$,$D$)-covariant form. Based on this result, we prove that 1) Poisson-Lie symmetric $σ$-models are two-loop renormalisable and 2) their $β$-functions are invariant under Poisson-Lie T-duality. Moreover, we identify a distinguished scheme in which Poisson-Lie symmetry is manifest. It simplifies the calculation of two-loop $β$-functions significantly and thereby provides a powerful new tool to advance into the quantum regime of integrable $σ$-models and generalised T-dualities. As an…
We review (and elaborate on) the `dual graviton problem' in the context of duality covariant formulations of M-theory (exceptional field theories). These theories require fields that are interpreted as components of the dual graviton in order to build complete multiplets under the exceptional groups E$_{d(d)}$, $d=2,\ldots, 9$. Circumventing no-go arguments, consistent theories for such fields have been constructed by incorporating additional covariant compensator fields. The latter fields are needed for gauge invariance but also for on-shell equivalence with $D=11$ and type IIB supergravity. …
We analyze a recent conjecture regarding the perturbative construction of non-linear deformations of all classically duality invariant theories, including N=8 supergravity. Starting with an initial quartic deformation, we engineer a procedure that generates a particular non-linear deformation (Born-Infeld) of the Maxwell theory. This procedure requires the introduction of an infinite number of modifications to a constraint which eliminates degrees of freedom consistent with the duality and field content of the system. We discuss the extension of this procedure to N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric the…
Understanding the consequences of the E_{7(7)} duality on the UV properties of N=8 supergravity requires unravelling when and how duality-covariant actions can be constructed so as to accommodate duality-invariant counter-terms. For non-supersymmetric abelian gauge theories exhibiting U(1)-duality, with and without derivative couplings, it was shown that such a covariant construction is always possible. In this paper we describe a similar procedure for the construction of covariant non-linear deformations of U(1)-duality invariant theories in the presence of rigid N=2 supersymmetry. This is a …
We explore topologically massive gauge theories using the covariant colour kinematics duality recently introduced by Cheung and Mangan. We show that the massive bi-adjoint scalar field is simply related to topologically massive gauge theory by the duality, and that enacting the same duality on the gauge theory produces topologically massive gravity coupled to a scalar or, equivalently, an antisymmetric field. We also show that different choices for the replacement of the colour structure constants with kinematic structure constants lead to different theories, including a topologically massive …
By explicit calculations of four-field couplings, we observe that the higher derivative corrections to the DBI action in flat space-time, can be either in a covariant form or in a T-duality invariant form. The two forms are related by a non-covariant field redefinition. Using this observation, we then propose a non-covariant but T-duality invariant action which includes all orders of massless fields and has two extra derivatives with respect to the DBI action.
Lorentz covariant generalisations of the notions of supersymmetry, superspace and self-duality are discussed. The essential idea is to extend standard constructions by allowing tangent vectors and coordinates which transform according to more general Lorentz representations than solely the spinorial and vectorial ones of standard lore. Such superspaces provide model configuration spaces for theories of arbitrary spin fields. Our framework is an elegant one for handling higher-dimensional theories in a manifestly SO(3,1) covariant fashion. A further application is the construction of a hierarch…
We outline a formulation of membrane dynamics in D=8 which is fully covariant under the U-duality group SL(2,Z) x SL(3,Z), and encodes all interactions to fields in the eight-dimensional supergravity, which is constructed through Kaluza-Klein reduction on T^3. Among the membrane degrees of freedom is an SL(2,R) doublet of world-volume 2-form potentials, whose quantised electric fluxes determine the membrane charges, and are conjectured to provide an interpretation of the variables occurring in the minimal representation of E_{6(6)} which appears in the context of automorphic membranes. We solv…
Parametrized field theories, which are generally covariant versions of ordinary field theories, are studied from the point of view of the covariant phase space: the space of solutions of the field equations equipped with a canonical (pre)symplectic structure. Motivated by issues arising in general relativity, we focus on: phase space representations of the spacetime diffeomorphism group, construction of observables, and the relationship between the canonical and covariant phase spaces.
We extend the notion of self-duality to spaces built from a set of representations of the Lorentz group with bosonic or fermionic behaviour, not having the traditional spin-one upper-bound of super Minkowski space. The generalized derivative vector fields on such superspaces are assumed to form a superalgebra. Introducing corresponding gauge potentials and hence covariant derivatives and curvatures, we define generalized self-duality as the Lorentz covariant vanishing of certain irreducible parts of the curvatures.
We discuss the covariant formulation of local field theories described by the Companion Lagrangian associated with p-branes. The covariantisation is shown to be useful for clarifying the geometrical meaning of the field equations and also their relation to the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of the standard Dirac-Born-Infeld theory.
This letter studies the Sp(2) covariant quantisation of gauge theories. The geometrical interpretation of gauge theories in terms of quasi principal fibre bundles $Q(M_S, G_S)$ is reviewed. It is then described the Sp(2) algebra of ordinary Yang-Mills theory. A consistent formulation of covariant lagrangian quantisation for general gauge theories based on Sp(2) BRST symmetry is established. The original N=1, ten dimensional superparticle is considered as an example of infinitely reducible gauge algebras, and given explicitly its Sp(2) BRST invariant action.
We show that the recently found covariant formulation for chiral $p$--forms in $2(p+1)$ dimensions with $p$ even, can be naturally extended to supersymmetric theories. We present the general method for writing covariant actions for chiral bosons and construct, in particular, in six dimensions covariant actions for one tensor supermultiplet, for pure supergravity and for supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of tensor supermultiplets.
We investigate the covariant formulation of Chern-Simons theories in a general odd dimension which can be obtained by introducing a vacuum connection field as a reference. Field equations, Noether currents and superpotentials are computed so that results are easily compared with the well-known results in dimension 3. Finally we use this covariant formulation of Chern-Simons theories to investigate their relation with topological BF theories.
Irreducible gauge theories in both the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian versions of the Sp(2)-covariant quantization method are studied. Solutions to generating equations are obtained in the form of expansions in power series of ghost and auxiliary variables up to the 3d order inclusively.
The osp(1,2)-covariant Lagrangian quantization of general gauge theories is formulated which applies also to massive fields. The formalism generalizes the Sp(2)-covariant BLT approach and guarantees symplectic invariance of the quantized action. The dependence of the generating functional of Green's functions on the choice of gauge in the massive case disappears in the limit m = 0. Ward identities related to osp(1,2) symmetry are derived. Massive gauge theories with closed algebra are studied as an example.
In this paper we propose a space-time random tensor network approach for understanding holographic duality. Using tensor networks with random link projections, we define boundary theories with interesting holographic properties, such as the Renyi entropies satisfying the covariant Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi formula, and operator correspondence with local reconstruction properties. We also investigate the unitarity of boundary theory in spacetime geometries with Lorenzian signature. Compared with the spatial random tensor networks, the space-time generalization does not require a particular ti…
Type-IIB supersymmetric theories have an SL(2,Z) invariance, known as U-duality, which controls the non-perturbative behavior of the theory. Under SL(2,Z) the supercharges are doublets, implying that the bosonic charges would be singlets or triplets. However, among the bosonic charges there are doublet strings and doublet fivebranes which are in conflict with the doublet property of the supercharges. It is shown that the conflict is resolved by structure constants that depend on moduli, such as the tau parameter, which transform under the same SL(2,Z). The resulting superalgebra encodes the no…
We apply the heat kernel method to relations between covariant and consistent currents in anomalous chiral gauge theories. Banerjee et al. have shown that the relation between these currents is expressed by a "functional curl" of the covariant current. Using the heat kernel method, we evaluate the functional curl explicitly in arbitrary even dimensions. We also apply the heat kernel method to evaluate Osabe and Suzuki's results of the difference between covariant and consistent currents in two and four dimensions. Applying the arguments of Banerjee et al. to gravitational anomalies, we investi…
A manifestly Lorentz invariant effective action for Yang-Mills theory depending only on commuting fields is constructed. This action posesses a bosonic symmetry, which plays a role analogous to the BRST symmetry in the standard formalism.
Based on the covariant color-kinematics duality, we investigate combinatorial and algebraic structures underlying their Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) numerators of tree-level amplitudes in Yang-Mills-scalar (YMS) theory. The closed-formulae for BCJ numerators of YMS amplitudes and the pure-Yang-Mills (YM) ones exhibit nice quasi-shuffle Hopf algebra structures, and interestingly they can be viewed as summing over boundaries of all dimensions of a combinatorial permutohedron. In particular, the numerator with two scalars and $n{-}2$ gluons contains Fubini number ( $F_{n{-}2}$ ) of terms in one-…
A noncommutative gauge theory is developed using a covariant star-product between differential forms defined on a symplectic manifold, considered as the space-time. It is proven that the field strength two-form is gauge covariant and satisfies a deformed Bianchi identity. The noncommutative Yang-Mills action is defined using a gauge covariant metric on the space-time and its gauge invariance is proven up to the second order in the noncommutativity parameter.
Using non canonical braidings, we first introduce a notion of symmetric tensors and corresponding Hodge operators on a class of left covariant 3d differential calculi over the quantum SU(2) group, then we induce Hodge operators on the left covariant 2d exterior algebras over the standard Podles quantum sphere.
We investigate a new property of nets of local algebras over 4-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetimes, called punctured Haag duality. This property consists in the usual Haag duality for the restriction of the net to the causal complement of a point $p$ of the spacetime. Punctured Haag duality implies Haag duality and local definiteness. Our main result is that, if the theory is locally covariant in the sense of Brunetti, Fredenhagen and Verch, then also the converse holds. The free Klein-Gordon field provides an example in which this property is verified.
We consider the exchange of identical scalar particles in theories with kappa-deformed Poincare symmetry. We argue that, at least in 1+1 dimensions, the symmetric group S_N can be realized on the space of N-particle states in a kappa-covariant fashion. For the case of two particles this realization is unique: we show that there is only one non-trivial intertwiner, which automatically squares to the identity.
The combined method of Higher Covariant Derivatives and Pauli-Villars regularization to regularize pure Yang-Mills theories is formulated in the framework of Batalin and Vilkovisky. However, BRS invariance is broken by this method and suitable counterterms should be added to restore it. The one loop counterterm is presented. Contrary to the scheme of Slavnov, this method is regularizing and leads to consistent renormalization group functions, which are the same as those found by other regularization schemes.
The osp(1,2)-covariant Lagrangian quantization of irreducible gauge theories [hep-th/9712204] is generalized to L-stage reducible theories. The dependence of the generating functional of Green's functions on the choice of gauge in the massive case is dicussed and Ward identities related to osp(1,2) symmetry are given. Massive first stage theories with closed gauge algebra are studied in detail. The generalization of the Chapline-Manton model and topological Yang-Mills theory to the case of massive fields is consedered as examples.
Using examples of a D=2 chiral scalar and a duality-symmetric formulation of D=4 Maxwell theory we study duality properties of actions for describing chiral bosons. In particular, in the D=4 case, upon performing a duality transform of an auxiliary scalar field, which ensures Lorentz covariance of the action, we arrive at a new covariant duality-symmetric Maxwell action, which contains a two-form potential as an auxiliary field. When the two-form field is gauge fixed this action reduces to a duality-symmetric action for Maxwell theory constructed by Zwanziger. We consider properties of this ne…
We construct a Lorentz and generally covariant, polynomial action for free chiral $p-$forms, classically equivalent to the Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin (PST) formulation. The minimal set up requires introducing an auxiliary $p-$form on top of the physical gauge $p-$form and the PST scalar. The action enjoys multiple duality symmetries, including those that exchange the roles of physical and auxiliary $p-$form fields. Actions of the same type are available for duality-symmetric formulations, which is demonstrated on the example of the electromagnetic field in four dimensions. There, the degrees of freed…
A Lorentz covariant matrix regularization of membrane thories is studied. It is shown that the action for a bosonic membrane can be defined by matrix regularization in a Lorentz covariant manner. The generator of area preserving diffeomorphism can also be consistently defined by matrix regularization, and we can make the area preserving gauge symmetry manifest. However, the reparametrization BRST charge explicitly depends on a specific basis set introduced to define the matrix regularization. We also briefly comment on an extension of the present formulation to a supermembrane.
We ask to what extent are the higher-derivative corrections of string theory constrained by T-duality. The seminal early work by Meissner tests T-duality by reduction to one dimension using a distinguished choice of field variables in which the bosonic string action takes a Gauss-Bonnet-type form. By analyzing all field redefinitions that may or may not be duality covariant and may or may not be gauge covariant we extend the procedure to test T-duality starting from an action expressed in arbitrary field variables. We illustrate the method by showing that it determines uniquely the first-order…
The algebraic formulation of the quantum group gauge models in the framework of the $R$-matrix approach to the theory of quantum groups is given. We consider gauge groups taking values in the quantum groups and noncommutative gauge fields transformed as comodules under the coaction of the gauge quantum group $ G_{q}$. Using this approach we construct the quantum deformations of the topological Chern-Simons models, non-abelian gauge theories and the Einstein gravity. The noncommutative fields in these models generate $ G_{q}$-covariant quantum algebras.

We show that color-kinematics duality is a manifest property of the equations of motion governing currents and field strengths. For the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM), this insight enables an implementation of the double copy at the level of fields, as well as an explicit construction of the kinematic algebra and associated kinematic current. As a byproduct, we also derive new formulations of the special Galileon (SG) and Born-Infeld (BI) theory. For Yang-Mills (YM) theory, this same approach reveals a novel structure -- covariant color-kinematics duality -- whose only difference from the conven…
The (heterotic) double field theories and the exceptional field theories are recently developed for manifestly duality covariant formulation of various supergravity theories, describing low-energy limit of various (heterotic) superstring and M-theory compactifications. These field theories are known to be reduced to the standard descriptions by introducing appropriately parameterized generalized metric and by applying suitably chosen section conditions. We generalize this development to non-geometric backgrounds by utilizing dual fields pertinent to non-geometric fluxes. We introduce different…
A nonlocal mass operator can be consistently set in local form through the introduction of a set of additional fields with geometrical appropriated properties. A local and polynomial gauge invariant action is thus identified. Equations compatible with the study of renormalization, from the algebraic point of view, are presented in the Landau Gauge.
We review the background field method for general N = 2 super Yang-Mills theories formulated in the N = 2 harmonic superspace. The covariant harmonic supergraph technique is then applied to rigorously prove the N=2 non-renormalization theorem as well as to compute the holomorphic low-energy action for the N = 2 SU(2) pure super Yang-Mills theory and the leading non-holomorphic low-energy correction for N = 4 SU(2) super Yang-Mills theory.
