We show that the one- and two-loop $β$-functions of the closed, bosonic string can be written in a manifestly O($D$,$D$)-covariant form. Based on this result, we prove that 1) Poisson-Lie symmetric $σ$-models are two-loop renormalisable and 2) their $β$-functions are invariant under Poisson-Lie T-duality. Moreover, we identify a distinguished scheme in which Poisson-Lie symmetry is manifest. It simplifies the calculation of two-loop $β$-functions significantly and thereby provides a powerful new tool to advance into the quantum regime of integrable $σ$-models and generalised T-dualities. As an illustrating example, we present the two-loop $β$-functions of the integrable $λ$- and $η$-deformation.
A manifestly Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariant form for the abelian gauge field action with local duality symmetry of Schwarz and Sen is given. Some of the underlying symmetries of the covariant action are further considered. The Noether conserved charge under continuous local duality rotations is found. The covariant couplings with gravity and the axidilaton field are discussed.
We explore the role of the dilaton field on higher derivative supergravity within the framework of Double Field Theory and use it to fix the Lorentz non covariant field redefinitions connecting the metric and dilaton fields with the duality multiplets.
We study the construction of covariant nonlinear duality-symmetric actions in dual formulation. Essentially, the construction is the PST-covariantisation and nonlinearisation of Zwanziger action. The covariantisation made use of three auxiliary scalar fields. Apart from these, the construction proceed in a similar way to that of the standard formulation. For example, the theories can be extended to include interactions with external fields, and that the theories possess two local PST symmetries. We then explicitly demonstrate the construction of covariant nonlinear duality-symmetric actions in…
We present a manifestly duality covariant formulation of the composite non-BPS and almost-BPS systems of multi-centre black hole solutions in four dimensions. The method of nilpotent orbits is used to define the two systems in terms of first order flow equations that transform covariantly under the duality group. Subsequently, we rewrite both systems of equations in terms of real, manifestly duality covariant, linear systems of Poisson equations. Somewhat unexpectedly, we find that the two systems are naturally described by the same equations involving space dependent abelian isometries that a…
It is known that non-holomorphic corrections are necessary in order to get duality invariant free energy and entropy function. However the present methods of incorporating non-holomorphic corrections are in conflict with special geometry properties of moduli space. The moduli fields do not transform in duality covariant way and their duality transformation also involves the graviphoton field strength. In the present note we construct duality covariant moduli fields for STU-model perturbatively in powers of the graviphoton field strength and demonstrated their existence upto second order.
We describe a systematic way of the generalization, to models with non-linear duality, of the space-time covariant and duality-invariant formulation of duality-symmetric theories in which the covariance of the action is ensured by the presence of a single auxiliary scalar field. It is shown that the duality-symmetric action should be invariant under the two local symmetries characteristic of this approach, which impose constraints on the form of the action similar to those of Gaillard and Zumino and in the non-covariant formalism. We show that the (twisted) self-duality condition obtained from…
A manifestly U-duality covariant approach to M-theory cosmology is developed and applied to cosmologies in dimensions D=4,5. Cosmological properties such as expansion powers and Hubble parameters turn out to be U-duality invariant in certain asymptotic regions. U-duality transformations acting on cosmological solutions, on the other hand, shift the transition time between two asymptotic regions and determine the details of the transition. Moreover, in D=5, we show that U-duality can map expanding negative and positive branch solutions into each other.
We demonstrate that an action proposed by A. Khoudeir and N. R. Pantoja in {\sl Phys. Rev.} {\bf D53}, 5974 (1996) for endowing Maxwell theory with manifest electric--magnetic duality symmetry contains, besides the Maxwell field, additional propagating vector degrees of freedom. Hence it cannot be considered as a duality symmetric action for a {\it single} abelian gauge field.
We perform the covariant operator quantization of the spin-$1$ model in $2+1$ spacetime dimensions to rigorously establish its dualities. For this purpose, the Kugo-Ojima-Nakanishi formalism, based on an indefinite metric Hilbert space in the Heisenberg picture, is used. We show that it is possible to extract a massive physical excitation constructed from a linear combination of the vector field $A_μ$ and the $B$-field. In turn, we also show that this excitation generates the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. This is achieved by exploring the two-point function of the vector field.
We derive the covariant Poisson's equation of (d+1)-dimensional Newton-Cartan gravity with (twistless) torsion by applying the `non-relativistic conformal method' introduced in arXiv:1512.06277. We apply this method on-shell to a Schrödinger field theory on the curved Newton-Hooke background. The covariance of the field equation in the presence of the non-relativistic cosmological constant, entails fixing all coefficients in the covariant Poisson's equation for (twistless) torsional Newton-Cartan gravity. We further derive Ehlers conditions and an equation associated to the torsion in this met…
We generalise the notions of supersymmetry and superspace by allowing generators and coordinates transforming according to more general Lorentz representations than the spinorial and vectorial ones of standard lore. This yields novel SO(3,1)-covariant superspaces, which we call hyperspaces, having dimensionality greater than (4|4) of traditional super-Minkowski space. As an application, we consider gauge fields on complexifications of these superspaces; and extending the concept of self-duality, we obtain classes of completely solvable equations analogous to the four-dimensional self-duality e…
We perform the antifield BRST quantization of duality-symmetric Maxwell theory and show explicitly the quantum equivalence of the different formulations (covariant and non-covariant). The non-covariant gauge-fixed action is used in the computation of propagators for this model.
We generalize the Poisson-Lie T-duality by making use of the structure of the affine Poisson group which is the concept introduced some time ago in Poisson geometry as a generalization of the Poisson-Lie group. We also introduce a new notion of an affine quasi-Poisson group and show that it gives rise to a still more general T-duality framework. We establish for a class of examples that this new T-duality is compatible with the renormalization group flow.
It is argued that the formal rules of correspondence between local observation procedures and observables do not exhaust the entire physical content of generally covariant quantum field theory. This result is obtained by expressing the distinguishing features of the local kinematical structure of quantum field theory in the generally covariant context in terms of a translocal structure which carries the totality of the nonlocal kinematical informations in a local region. This gives rise to a duality principle at the dynamical level which emphasizes the significance of the underlying translocal…
We compute the one-loop β-functions describing the renormalisation of the coupling constant λand the frequency parameter Ωfor the real four-dimensional duality-covariant noncommutative ϕ^4-model, which is renormalisable to all orders. The contribution from the one-loop four-point function is reduced by the one-loop wavefunction renormalisation, but the β_λ-function remains non-negative. Both β_λand β_Ωvanish at the one-loop level for the duality-invariant model characterised by Ω=1. Moreover, β_Ωalso vanishes in the limit Ω\to 0, which defines the standard noncommutative ϕ^4-quantum field theo…
It is shown, under rather general smoothness conditions on the gauge potential, which takes values in an arbitrary semi-simple compact Lie algebra ${\bf g}$, that if a (${\bf g}$-valued) solution to the gauge covariant Laplace equation exists, which vanishes at spatial infinity, in the cases of 1,2,3,... space dimensions, then the solution is identically zero. This result is also valid if the Lie algebra is merely compact. Consequently, a solution to the gauge covariant Poisson equation is uniquely determined by its asymptotic radial limit at spatial infinity. In the cases of one or two space …
Duality covariant curvature and torsion tensors in double field theory/generalized geometry are central in analyzing consistent truncations, generalized dualities, and related integrable $σ$-models. They are constructed systematically with the help of a larger, auxiliary space in a procedure inspired by Cartan geometry originally proposed by Poláček and Siegel for bosonic strings. It pivots around a maximally isotropic group that captures the generalized structure group of the physical space. We show how dropping the isotropy condition on this group allows us to describe heterotic/type I strin…
We study extremal black hole solutions to four dimensional N=2 supergravity based on a cubic symmetric scalar manifold. Using the coset construction available for these models, we define the first order flow equations implied by the corresponding nilpotency conditions on the three-dimensional scalar momenta for the composite non-BPS class of multi-centre black holes. As an application, we directly solve these equations for the single-centre subclass, and write the general solution in a manifestly duality covariant form. This includes all single-centre under-rotating non-BPS solutions, as well …
An explicit Lorentz covariant formulation of the canonical theory for classical fields is established on a space-like hypersurface. Hamilton's equations and a Poisson bracket are defined on the space-like hypersurface. The Poisson bracket relations between total momentum and total angular momentum satisfies the Poincar{é} algebra. It is shown that our Poisson bracket has the same symplectic structure that was brought in the covariant symplectic approach.
The Hamiltonian formalism offers a natural framework for discussing the notion of Poisson Lie T-duality. This is because the duality is inherent in the Poisson structures alone and exists regardless of the choice of Hamiltonian. Thus one can pose alternative dynamical systems possessing nonabelian T-duality. As an example, we find a dual Hamiltonian formulation of the O(3) nonlinear sigma-model. In addition, starting from a general quadratic Hamiltonian, we easily recover the known dynamical systems having Poisson Lie T-duality.
We construct the full effective action including DBI and WZ terms for solitonic 5-branes covariant under T-duality. The result is a completion of results known in the literature to a full T-duality covariant expression. The covariant WZ action includes previously omitted R-R terms. The obtained full covariant effective action reproduces the one obtained by S-duality from the D5-brane upon the correct choice of the covariant charge.
Poisson-Lie target space duality is a framework where duality transformations are properly defined. In this letter we investigate the pair of sigma models defined by the double SO(3,1) in the Iwasawa decomposition.
We prove that a scalar quantum field theory defined on noncommutative Minkowski spacetime with noncommuting momentum coordinates is covariant with respect to the UV/IR duality which exchanges coordinates and momenta. The proof is based on suitable resonance expansions of charged noncommutative scalar fields in a background electric field, which yields an effective description of the field theory in terms of a coupled complex two-matrix model. The two independent matrix degrees of freedom ensure unitarity and manifest CT-invariance of the field theory. The formalism describes an analytic contin…
The supersymmetric generalization of Poisson-Lie T-duality in superconformal WZNW models is considered. It is shown that the classical N=2 superconformal WZNW models posses a natural Poisson-Lie symmetry which allows to construct dual $σ$- models.
We extend the techniques of double field theory to more general gravity theories and U-duality symmetries, having in mind applications to the complete D=11 supergravity. In this paper we work out a (3+3)-dimensional `U-duality covariantization' of D=4 Einstein gravity, in which the Ehlers group SL(2,R) is realized geometrically, acting in the 3 representation on half of the coordinates. We include the full (2+1)-dimensional metric, while the `internal vielbein' is a coset representative of SL(2,R)/SO(2) and transforms under gauge transformations via generalized Lie derivatives. In addition, we…
We extend the path-integral formulation of Poisson-Lie duality found by Tyurin and von Unge to N=1 supersymmetric sigma-models. Using an explicit representation of the generators of the Drinfel'd double corresponding to GxU(1)^dimG we discuss an application to non-abelian duality. The paper also contains the relevant background and some comments on Poisson-Lie duality.
We prove that, general $\s$-models related by Poisson-Lie T-duality are quantum equivalent under one-loop renormalization group flow. We reveal general properties of the flows, we study the associated generalized coset models and provide explicit examples.
We review (and elaborate on) the `dual graviton problem' in the context of duality covariant formulations of M-theory (exceptional field theories). These theories require fields that are interpreted as components of the dual graviton in order to build complete multiplets under the exceptional groups E$_{d(d)}$, $d=2,\ldots, 9$. Circumventing no-go arguments, consistent theories for such fields have been constructed by incorporating additional covariant compensator fields. The latter fields are needed for gauge invariance but also for on-shell equivalence with $D=11$ and type IIB supergravity. …
Poisson-Lie T-duality in quantum N=2 superconformal WZNW models is considered. The Poisson-Lie T-duality transformation rules of the super-Kac-Moody algebra currents are found from the conjecture that, as in the classical case, the quantum Poisson-Lie T-duality is given by an automorphism which interchanges the isotropic subalgebras of the underlying Manin triple of the model. It is shown that quantum Poisson-Lie T-duality acts on the generators of the N=2 super-Virasoro algebra of the quantum models as a mirror symmetry acts: in one of the chirality sectors it is trivial transformation while …
We analyze a recent conjecture regarding the perturbative construction of non-linear deformations of all classically duality invariant theories, including N=8 supergravity. Starting with an initial quartic deformation, we engineer a procedure that generates a particular non-linear deformation (Born-Infeld) of the Maxwell theory. This procedure requires the introduction of an infinite number of modifications to a constraint which eliminates degrees of freedom consistent with the duality and field content of the system. We discuss the extension of this procedure to N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric the…
Understanding the consequences of the E_{7(7)} duality on the UV properties of N=8 supergravity requires unravelling when and how duality-covariant actions can be constructed so as to accommodate duality-invariant counter-terms. For non-supersymmetric abelian gauge theories exhibiting U(1)-duality, with and without derivative couplings, it was shown that such a covariant construction is always possible. In this paper we describe a similar procedure for the construction of covariant non-linear deformations of U(1)-duality invariant theories in the presence of rigid N=2 supersymmetry. This is a …
We present a formulation of Double Field Theory with a Drinfeld double as extended spacetime. It makes Poisson-Lie T-duality (including abelian and non-abelian T-duality as special cases) manifest. This extends the scope of possible applications of the theory, which so far captured abelian T-duality only, considerably. The full massless bosonic subsector (NS/NS and R/R) of type II string theories is covered.
We review aspects of Poisson-Lie T-duality which we explicitly formulate as a canonical transformation on the world-sheet. Extensions of previous work on T-duality in relation to supersymmetry are also discussed. (Contribution to the proceedings of the 30th International Symposium Ahrenshoop on the Theory of Elementary Particles, Buckow, Germany, 26-31 August 1996)
We explore topologically massive gauge theories using the covariant colour kinematics duality recently introduced by Cheung and Mangan. We show that the massive bi-adjoint scalar field is simply related to topologically massive gauge theory by the duality, and that enacting the same duality on the gauge theory produces topologically massive gravity coupled to a scalar or, equivalently, an antisymmetric field. We also show that different choices for the replacement of the colour structure constants with kinematic structure constants lead to different theories, including a topologically massive …
The description of the two sets of (4,0) supersymmetric models that are related by non-abelian duality transformations is given. The (4,0) supersymmetric WZNW is constructed and the formulation of the (4,0) supersymmetric sigma model dual to (4,0) supersymmetric WZNW model in the sense of Poisson-Lie T-duality is described.
We propose leading order $α'$-corrections to the Poisson-Lie T-duality transformation rules of the metric, $B$-field, and dilaton. Based on Double Field Theory, whose corrections to this order are known, we argue that they map conformal field theories to conformal field theories. Remarkably, Born geometry plays a central role in the construction.
By explicit calculations of four-field couplings, we observe that the higher derivative corrections to the DBI action in flat space-time, can be either in a covariant form or in a T-duality invariant form. The two forms are related by a non-covariant field redefinition. Using this observation, we then propose a non-covariant but T-duality invariant action which includes all orders of massless fields and has two extra derivatives with respect to the DBI action.
A pair of conformal sigma models related by Poisson-Lie T-duality is constructed by starting with the O(2,2) Drinfeld double. The duality relates the standard SL(2,R) WZNW model to a constrained sigma model defined on SL(2,R) group space. The quantum equivalence of the models is established by using a path integral argument.
We formulate Poisson-Lie T-duality in a path-integral manner that allows us to analyze the quantum corrections. Using the path-integral, we rederive the most general form of a Poisson-Lie dualizeable background and the generalized Buscher transformation rules it has to satisfy.
The transformation properties of the N=2 Virasoro superalgebra generators under Poisson-Lie T-duality in (2,2)-superconformal WZNW and Kazama-Suzuki models is considered. It is shown that Poisson-Lie T-duality acts on the N=2 super-Virasoro algebra generators as a mirror symmetry does: it unchanges the generators from one of the chirality sectors while in another chirality sector it changes the sign of U(1) current and interchanges spin-3/2 currents. We discuss Kazama-Suzuki models generalization of this transformation and show that Poisson-Lie T-duality acts as a mirror symmetry also.
We investigate (non-)Abelian T-duality from the perspective of Poisson-Lie T-plurality. We show that sigma models related by duality/plurality are given not only by Manin triples obtained from decompositions of Drinfel'd double, but also by their particular embeddings, i.e. maps that relate bases of these decompositions. This allows us to get richer set of dual or plural sigma models than previously thought. That's why we ask how T-duality is defined and what should be the `canonical' duality or plurality transformation.
Poisson-Lie T-duality in N=2 superconformal WZNW models on the real Lie groups is considered. It is shown that Poisson-Lie T-duality is governed by the complexifications of the corresponding real groups endowed with Semenov-Tian-Shansky symplectic forms, i.e. Heisenberg doubles. Complex Heisenberg doubles are used to define on the group manifolds of the N=2 superconformal WZNW models the natural actions of the isotropic complex subgroups forming the doubles. It is proved that with respect to these actions N=2 superconformal WZNW models admit Poisson-Lie symmetries. Poisson-Lie T-duality transf…
Lorentz covariant generalisations of the notions of supersymmetry, superspace and self-duality are discussed. The essential idea is to extend standard constructions by allowing tangent vectors and coordinates which transform according to more general Lorentz representations than solely the spinorial and vectorial ones of standard lore. Such superspaces provide model configuration spaces for theories of arbitrary spin fields. Our framework is an elegant one for handling higher-dimensional theories in a manifestly SO(3,1) covariant fashion. A further application is the construction of a hierarch…
We outline a formulation of membrane dynamics in D=8 which is fully covariant under the U-duality group SL(2,Z) x SL(3,Z), and encodes all interactions to fields in the eight-dimensional supergravity, which is constructed through Kaluza-Klein reduction on T^3. Among the membrane degrees of freedom is an SL(2,R) doublet of world-volume 2-form potentials, whose quantised electric fluxes determine the membrane charges, and are conjectured to provide an interpretation of the variables occurring in the minimal representation of E_{6(6)} which appears in the context of automorphic membranes. We solv…
The supersymmetric generalization of Pisson-Lie T-duality in N=2 superconformal WZNW models on the compact groups is considered. It is shown that the role of Drinfeld's doubles play the complexifications of the corresponding compact groups. These complex doubles are used to define the natural actions of the isotropic subgroups forming the doubles on the group manifolds of the N=2 superconformal WZNW models. The Poisson- Lie T-duality in N=2 superconformal U(2)-WZNW model considered in details. It is shown that this model admits Poisson-Lie symmetries with respect to the isotropic subgroups for…
The symmetry properties of the bosonic string effective action under Poisson-Lie duality transformations are investigated. A convenient and simple formulation of these duality transformations is found, that allows the reduction of the string effective action in a Kaluza-Klein framework. It is shown that the action is invariant provided that the two Lie algebras, forming the Drinfeld double, have traceless structure constants. Finally, a functional relation is found between the Weyl anomaly coefficients of the original and dual non-linear sigma models.
We apply canonical Poisson-Lie T-duality transformations to bosonic open string worldsheet boundary conditions, showing that the form of these conditions is invariant at the classical level, and therefore they are compatible with Poisson-Lie T-duality. In particular the conditions for conformal invariance are automatically preserved, rendering also the dual model conformal. The boundary conditions are defined in terms of a gluing matrix which encodes the properties of D-branes, and we derive the duality map for this matrix. We demonstrate explicitly the implications of this map for D-branes in…
We generalize noncommutative gauge theory using Nambu-Poisson structures to obtain a new type of gauge theory with higher brackets and gauge fields. The approach is based on covariant coordinates and higher versions of the Seiberg-Witten map. We construct a covariant Nambu-Poisson gauge theory action, give its first order expansion in the Nambu-Poisson tensor and relate it to a Nambu-Poisson matrix model.
We prove that a transformation, conjectured in our previous work, between phase-space variables in $\s$-models related by Poisson-Lie T-duality is indeed a canonical one. We do so by explicitly demonstrating the invariance of the classical Poisson brackets. This is the first example of a class of $\s$-models with no isometries related by canonical transformations. In addition we discuss generating functionals of canonical transformations in generally non-isometric, bosonic and supersymmetric $\s$-models and derive the complete set of conditions that determine them. We apply this general formal…
All Bianchi bialgebras have been obtained. By introducing a non-degenerate adjoint invariant inner product over these bialgebras the associated Drinfeld doubles have been constructed, then by calculating the coupling matrices for these bialgebras several sigma-models with Poisson-Lie symmetry have been obtained. Two simple examples as prototypes of Poisson-Lie dual models have been given.
The analogue of the Poisson bracket for the De Donder-Weyl (DW) Hamiltonian formulation of field theory is proposed. We start from the Hamilton- Poincaré-Cartan (HPC) form of the multidimensional variational calculus and define the bracket on the differential forms over the space-time (=horizontal forms). This bracket is related to the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket of the multivector fields which are associated with the horizontal forms by means of the "polysymplectic form". The latter is given by the HPC form and generalizes the symplectic form to field theory. We point out that the algebra of f…
Aspects of Poisson-Lie T-duality are reviewed in more algebraic way than in our, rather geometric, previous papers. As a new result, a moment map is constructed for the Poisson-Lie symmetry of the system consisting of open strings propagating in a Poisson-Lie group manifold.
Global issues of the Poisson-Lie T-duality are addressed. It is shown that oriented open strings propagating on a group manifold $G$ are dual to $D$-brane - anti-$D$-brane pairs propagating on the dual group manifold $\ti G$. The $D$-branes coincide with the symplectic leaves of the standard Poisson structure induced on the dual group $\ti G$ by the dressing action of the group $G$. T-duality maps the momentum of the open string into the mutual distance of the $D$-branes in the pair. The whole picture is then extended to the full modular space $M(D)$ of the Poisson-Lie equivalent $\si$-models …
We extend the notion of self-duality to spaces built from a set of representations of the Lorentz group with bosonic or fermionic behaviour, not having the traditional spin-one upper-bound of super Minkowski space. The generalized derivative vector fields on such superspaces are assumed to form a superalgebra. Introducing corresponding gauge potentials and hence covariant derivatives and curvatures, we define generalized self-duality as the Lorentz covariant vanishing of certain irreducible parts of the curvatures.
A general approach is proposed to constructing covariant Poisson brackets in the space of histories of a classical field-theoretical model. The approach is based on the concept of Lagrange anchor, which was originally developed as a tool for path-integral quantization of Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian dynamics. The proposed covariant Poisson brackets generalize the Peierls' bracket construction known in the Lagrangian field theory.
Topological defects have long been known to encode symmetries and dualities between physical systems. In the context of string theory, defects have been intensively studied at the level of the worldsheet. Although marked by a number of pioneering milestones, the target space picture of defects is much less understood. In this paper, we show, at the level of the target space, that Poisson-Lie T-duality can be encoded as a topological defect. With this result at hand, we can postulate the kernel capturing the Fourier-Mukai transform associated to the action of Poisson-Lie T-duality on the RR-sec…
A description of dual non-Abelian duality is given, based on the notion of the Drinfeld double. The presentation basically follows the original paper \cite{KS2}, written in collaboration with P. \v Severa, but here the emphasis is put on the algebraic rather than the geometric aspect of the construction and a concrete example of the Borelian double is worked out in detail.
