Given a 2-category $\mathcal{A}$, a $2$-functor $\mathcal{A} \overset {F} {\longrightarrow} \mathcal{C}at$ and a distinguished 1-subcategory $Σ\subset \mathcal{A}$ containing all the objects, a $σ$-cone for $F$ (with respect to $Σ$) is a lax cone such that the structural $2$-cells corresponding to the arrows of $Σ$ are invertible. The conical $σ$-limit is the universal (up to isomorphism) $σ$-cone. The notion of $σ$-limit generalises the well known notions of pseudo and lax limit. We consider the fundamental notion of $σ$-filtered} pair $(\mathcal{A}, \, Σ)$ which generalises the notion of 2-filtered 2-category. We give an explicit construction of $σ$-filtered $σ$-colimits of categories, construction which allows computations with these colimits. We then state and prove a basic exactness property of the 2-category of categories, namely, that $σ$-filtered $σ$-colimits commute with finite weighted pseudo (or bi) limits. An important corollary of this result is that a $σ$-filtered $σ$-colimit of exact category valued 2-functors is exact. This corollary is essential in the 2-dimensional theory of flat and pro-representable 2-functors, that we develop elsewhere.
An algebraically exact category in one that admits all of the limits and colimits which every variety of algebras possesses and every forgetful functor between varieties preserves, and which verifies the same interactions between these limits and colimits as hold in any variety. Such categories were studied by Adámek, Lawvere and Rosický: they characterised them as the categories with small limits and sifted colimits for which the functor taking sifted colimits is continuous. They conjectured that a complete and sifted-cocomplete category should be algebraically exact just when it is Barr-exac…
We show that in a category with pullbacks, arbitrary sifted colimits may be constructed as filtered colimits of reflexive coequalizers. This implies that "lex sifted colimits", in the sense of Garner--Lack, decompose as Barr-exactness plus filtered colimits commuting with finite limits. We also prove generalizations of these results for $κ$-small sifted and filtered colimits, and their interaction with $λ$-small limits in place of finite ones, generalizing Garner's characterization of algebraic exactness in the sense of Adámek--Lawvere--Rosický. Along the way, we prove a general result on clas…
Many kinds of categorical structure require the existence of finite limits, of colimits of some specified type, and of "exactness" conditions between the finite limits and the specified colimits. Some examples are the notions of regular, or Barr-exact, or lextensive, or coherent, or adhesive category. We introduce a general notion of exactness, of which each of the structures listed above, and others besides, are particular instances. The notion can be understood as a form of cocompleteness "in the lex world" -- more precisely, in the 2-category of finitely complete categories and finite-limit…
A well-known result of SGA4 shows how to compute the pseudo-colimit of a category-valued pseudo-functor on a 1-category. The main result of this paper gives a generalization of this computation by constructing the weighted pseudo-colimit of a category-valued pseudo-functor on a 2-category. From this is derived a computation of the weighed bicolimit of a category-valued pseudo-functor.
We define notions of regularity and (Barr-)exactness for 2-categories. In fact, we define three notions of regularity and exactness, each based on one of the three canonical ways of factorising a functor in Cat: as (surjective on objects, injective on objects and fully faithful), as (bijective on objects, fully faithful), and as (bijective on objects and full, faithful). The correctness of our notions is justified using the theory of lex colimits introduced by Lack and the second author. Along the way, we develop an abstract theory of regularity and exactness relative to a kernel--quotient fac…
In this paper we go into the study of 2-limits and 2-colimits in the 2-category CAT the category of small categories. More precisely we show the commutation of filtered 2-colimits and finite 2-limits. It is a generalization of a classical result in category theory.
Lenses are an important tool in applied category theory. While individual lenses have been widely used in applications, many of the mathematical properties of the corresponding categories of lenses have remained unknown. In this paper, we study the category of small categories and asymmetric delta lenses, and prove that it has several good exactness properties. These properties include the existence of certain limits and colimits, as well as so-called imported limits, such as imported products and imported pullbacks, which have arisen previously in applications. The category is also shown to b…
A restriction category is an abstract formulation for a category of partial maps, defined in terms of certain specified idempotents called the restriction idempotents. All categories of partial maps are restriction categories; conversely, a restriction category is a category of partial maps if and only if the restriction idempotents split. Restriction categories facilitate reasoning about partial maps as they have a purely algebraic formulation. In this paper we consider colimits and limits in restriction categories. As the notion of restriction category is not self-dual, we should not expect …
It is shown that, for a small quantaloid Q, the category of small Q-categories and Q-functors is total and cototal, and so is the category of Q-distributors and Q-Chu transforms.
We show that the category of comodules over a coassociative coalgebra in a complete, cocomplete and well-powered category has limits and colimits under additional assumptions.
We prove that the category of Banach $L^0$-modules over a given $σ$-finite measure space is both complete and cocomplete, which means that it admits all small limits and colimits.
If $\mathcal{C}$ is a cocomplete monoidal category in which tensoring from both sides preserves coequalizers, then the category of monoids over $\mathcal{C}$ is cocomplete. The same holds if $\mathcal{C}$ has regular factorizations and tensoring only preserves regular epimorphisms. As an application a lifting theorem for an adjunction with a monoidal right adjoint to an adjunction between the respective categories of monoids is proved.
We prove that a category which is symmetric (relaxed) monoidal closed, (small) complete, well-powered and has a small cogenerating family, is cocomplete.
The contributions of this paper are twofold. Within the framework of Grothendieck's fibrational category theory, we present a web of fundamental 2-adjunctions surrounding the formation of the category of all small diagrams in a given category and the formation of the Grothendieck category of a functor into the category of small categories. We demonstrate the utility of these adjunctions, in part by deriving three formulae for (co-)limits: a `twisted' generalization of the well-known Fubini formula, as first established by Chachólski and Scherer; a new `general colimit decomposition formula'; a…
Badzioch showed that in the category of simplicial sets each homotopy algebra of a Lawvere theory is weakly equivalent to a strict algebra. In seeking to extend this result to other contexts Rosicky observed a key point to be that each homotopy colimit in simplicial sets admits a decomposition into a homotopy sifted colimit of finite coproducts, and asked the author whether a similar decomposition holds in the 2-category of categories Cat. Our purpose in the present paper is to show that this is the case.
Let V be a cofibrantly generated closed symmetric monoidal model category and M a model V-category. We say that a weighted colimit W*D of a diagram D weighted by W is a homotopy weighted colimit if the diagram D is pointwise cofibrant and the weight W is cofibrant in the projective model structure on [C^op,V]. We then proceed to describe such homotopy weighted colimits through homotopy tensors and ordinary (conical) homotopy colimits. This is a homotopy version of the well known isomorphism W*D=\int^C(W\tensor D). After proving this homotopy decomposition in general we study in some detail a f…
In this work, it is shown that the category $\mathsf{BXMod/R}$ of braided crossed modules over a fixed commutative algebra $R$ is an exact category in the sense of Barr.
This document is centered around a main idea: simplicial categories, by which we mean simplicial objects in the category of categories, can be treated as a two-fold categorical structure and their double category theory is homotopically meaningful. The most well-known two-fold structures are double categories, typically used to organize bimodules in various contexts. However there is no double category of spaces even though notions of bimodule are conceivable. We first remedy this defect of double category theory by constructing a meaningful simplicial category of spaces. Then we develop the a…
We prove that the exactness of direct limits in an abelian category with products and an injective cogenerator J is equivalent to a condition on J which is well-known to characterize pure-injectivity in module categories, and we describe an application of this result to the tilting theory. We derive our result as a consequence of a more general characterization of when inverse limits in the Eilenberg-Moore category of a monad on the category of sets preserve regular epimorphisms.
We call a finitely complete category diexact if every Mal'cev relation admits a pushout which is stable under pullback and itself a pullback. We prove three results relating to diexact categories: firstly, that a category is a pretopos if and only if it is diexact with a strict initial object; secondly, that a category is diexact if and only if it is Barr-exact, and every pair of monomorphisms admits a pushout which is stable and a pullback; and thirdly, that a small category with finite limits and pushouts of Mal'cev spans is diexact if and only if it admits a full structure-preserving embedd…
For a small simplicial category A, we prove that the homotopy colimit functor from the category of simplicial diagrams on A to the category of simplicial sets over the homotopy-coherent nerve of A provides a left Quillen equivalence between the projective model structure on the former category and the covariant model structure on the latter. We compare this Quillen equivalence to the straightening-unstraightening equivalence previously established by Lurie, where the left adjoint goes in the opposite direction. The existence of left Quillen functors in both directions considerably simplifies t…
For a monoidal $\infty$-category $\mathcal{M}$ with colimits, we study colimits of $\mathcal{M}$-functors $\mathcal{A}\to\mathcal{B}$ where $\mathcal{B}$ is left-tensored over $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{A}$ is an $\mathcal{M}$-enriched category. We prove that the enriched Yoneda embedding $Y:\mathcal{A}\to P_{\mathcal{M}}(\mathcal{A})$ yields a universal $\mathcal{M}$-functor and, in the case when $\mathcal{A}$ has a certain monoidal structure, the category of enriched presheaves $P_{\mathcal{M}}(\mathcal{A})$ inherits the same monoidal structure.
For a small category K enriched over a suitable monoidal category V, the free completion of K under colimits is the presheaf category [K*,V]. If K is large, its free completion under colimits is the V-category PK of small presheaves on K, where a presheaf is small if it is a left Kan extension of some presheaf with small domain. We study the existence of limits and of monoidal closed structures on PK.
In this thesis weighted colimits in 2-categories equipped with promorphisms are studied. Such colimits include most universal constructions with counits, like ordinary colimits in categories, weighted colimits in enriched categories, and left Kan extensions. In the first chapter we recall the notion of 2-categories equipped with promorphisms (also simply called equipments), that provide a coherent way of adding bimodule-like morphisms to a 2-category. In the second chapter we recall two ways of defining weighted colimits in equipments. Most important to us is their original definition, introdu…
Given a marked $\infty$-category $\mathcal{D}^{\dagger}$ (i.e. an $\infty$-category equipped with a specified collection of morphisms) and a functor $F: \mathcal{D} \to \mathbb{B}$ with values in an $\infty$-bicategory, we define $\operatorname{colim}^{\dagger} F$, the marked colimit of $F$. We provide a definition of weighted colimits in $\infty$-bicategories when the indexing diagram is an $\infty$-category and show that they can be computed in terms of marked colimits. In the maximally marked case $\mathcal{D}^{\sharp}$, our construction retrieves the $\infty$-categorical colimit of $F$ in …
This paper develops a theory of colimit sketches "with constructions" in higher category theory, formalising the input to the ubiquitous procedure of adjoining specified "constructible" colimits to a category such that specified "relation" colimits are enforced (or preserved). From a more technical standpoint, sketches are a way to describe dense functors using techniques from the homotopy theory of diagrams. We establish basic properties of diagrams in an infinity-category C as a model for presheaves on C and Bousfield localisations thereof, discuss extensions of functors and adjunctions, and…
We construct explicitly the weights on the simplicial category so that the colimits and limits of 2-functors with those weights provide the Kleisli objects and the Eilenberg-Moore objects, respectively, in any 2-category.
We go back to the roots of enriched category theory and study categories enriched in chain complexes; that is, we deal with differential graded categories (DG-categories for short). In particular, we recall weighted colimits and provide examples. We solve the 50 year old question of how to characterize Cauchy complete DG-categories in terms of existence of some specific finite absolute colimits. As well as the interactions between absolute weighted colimits, we also examine the total complex of a chain complex in a DG-category as a non-absolute weighted colimit.
Colimits that satisfy the Van Kampen condition have interesting exactness properties. We show that the elementary presentation of the Van Kampen condition is actually a characterisation of a universal property in the associated bicategory of spans. The main theorem states that Van Kampen cocones are precisely those diagrams in a category that induce bicolimit diagrams in its associated bicategory of spans, provided that the category has pullbacks and enough colimits.
This paper investigates infinite matroids from a categorical perspective. We prove that the category of infinite matroids is a proto-exact category in the sense of Dyckerhoff and Kapranov, thereby generalizing our previous result on the category of finite matroids. We also characterize finitary matroids as co-limits of finite matroids, and show that the finite matroids are precisely the finitely presentable objects in this category.
The paper studies analytic functors between presheaf categories. Generalising results of A. Joyal and of R. Hasegawa for analytic endofunctors on the category of sets, we give two characterisations of analytic functors between presheaf categories over groupoids: (i) as functors preserving filtered colimits, quasi-pullbacks, and cofiltered limits; and (ii) as functors preserving filtered colimits and wide quasi-pullbacks. The development establishes that small groupoids, analytic functors between their presheaf categories, and quasi-cartesian natural transformations between them form a 2-catego…
Although the notion of crossed groups was originally introduced only in the simplicial case, the definition makes sense in the other categories. For instance, Batanin and Markl studied crossed interval groups to investigate symmetries on the Hochschild cohomology in view of operads. The aim of this paper is to make a comprehensive understanding of crossed groups for arbitrary base categories. In particular, we focus on the local presentability of the category of crossed groups, monadicity, and the basechange theorem along certain sorts of functors. The paper also contains the classification of…
Categorical universal algebra can be developed either using Lawvere theories (single-sorted finite product theories) or using monads, and the category of Lawvere theories is equivalent to the category of finitary monads on Set. We show how this equivalence, and the basic results of universal algebra, can be generalized in three ways: replacing Set by another category, working in an enriched setting, and by working with another class of limits than finite products. An important special case involves working with sifted-colimit-preserving monads rather than filtered-colimit-preserving ones.
If C and D are varieties of algebras in the sense of general algebra, then by a representable functor C --> D we understand a functor which, when composed with the forgetful functor D --> Set, gives a representable functor in the classical sense; Freyd showed that these functors are determined by D-coalgebra objects of C. Let Rep(C,D) denote the category of all such functors, a full subcategory of Cat(C,D), opposite to the category of D-coalgebras in C. It is proved that Rep(C,D) has small colimits, and in certain situations, explicit constructions for the representing coalgebras are obtained.…
We construct free monoids in a monoidal category with finite limits and countable colimits, in which tensoring on either side preserves reflexive coequalizers and colimits of countable chains.
In this paper we prove that for any model category, the Bousfield-Kan construction of the homotopy colimit is the absolute left derived functor of the colimit. This is achieved by showing that the Bousfield-Kan homotopy colimit is moreover a realizable homotopy colimit, defined by means of a suitable 2-category of relative categories. In addition, in the case of exact coproducts, we characterize the realizable homotopy colimits that satisfy a cofinality property as those given by a formula following the pattern of Bousfield-Kan construction: they are the composition of a "geometric realization…
We study the problem of existence and uniqueness of homotopy colimits in stable representation theory, where one typically does not have model category structures to guarantee that these homotopy colimits exist or have good properties. We get both negative results (homotopy cofibers fail to exist if there exist any objects of positive finite projective dimension!) and positive results (reasonable conditions under which homotopy colimits exist and are unique, even when model category structures fail to exist). Along the way, we obtain relative-homological-algebraic generalizations of classical …
This note recalls the representation of regular theories T in terms of set-valued functors on models given by Makkai(1990), and explicitly states the representation theorem for the classifying topos Set[T] in terms of filtered colimit preserving functors which can be extrapolated from the results of that paper. That representation of Set[T] is then compared with topological representations in the style of Butz and Moerdijk(1998) by showing that for a certain natural topology on the space of models, preserving filtered colimits is the same thing as being `continuous' in the sense of being an eq…
Building on a previous definition of homotopy limit of model categories, we give a definition of homotopy colimit of model categories. Using the complete Segal space model for homotopy theories, we verify that this definition corresponds to the model-category-theoretic definition in that setting.
