Let $(G,ρ)$ be a stationary random graph, and use $B^G_ρ(r)$ to denote the ball of radius $r$ about $ρ$ in $G$. Suppose that $(G,ρ)$ has annealed polynomial growth, in the sense that $\mathbb{E}[|B^G_ρ(r)|] \leq O(r^k)$ for some $k > 0$ and every $r \geq 1$.
Then there is an infinite sequence of times $\{t_n\}$ at which the random walk $\{X_t\}$ on $(G,ρ)$ is at most diffusive: Almost surely (over the choice of $(G,ρ)$), there is a number $C > 0$ such that \[ \mathbb{E} \left[\mathrm{dist}_G(X_0, X_{t_n})^2 \mid X_0 = ρ, (G,ρ)\right]\leq C t_n\qquad \forall n \geq 1\,. \] This result is new even in the case when $G$ is a stationary random subgraph of $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Combined with the work of Benjamini, Duminil-Copin, Kozma, and Yadin (2015), it implies that $G$ almost surely does not admit a non-constant harmonic function of sublinear growth.
To complement this, we argue that passing to a subsequence of times $\{t_n\}$ is necessary, as there are stationary random graphs of (almost sure) polynomial growth where the random walk is almost surely superdiffusive at an infinite subset of times.
We prove diffusive lower bounds on the rate of escape of the random walk on infinite transitive graphs. Similar estimates hold for finite graphs, up to the relaxation time of the walk. Our approach uses nonconstant equivariant harmonic mappings taking values in a Hilbert space. For the special case of discrete, amenable groups, we present a more explicit proof of the Mok-Korevaar-Schoen theorem on the existence of such harmonic maps by constructing them from the heat flow on a Følner set.
We consider recurrent diffusive random walks on a strip. We present constructive conditions on Green functions of finite sub-domains which imply a Central Limit Theorem with polynomial error bound, a Local Limit Theorem, and mixing of environment viewed by the particle process. Our conditions can be verified for a wide class of environments including independent environments, quasiperiodic environments, and environments which are asymptotically constant at infinity. The conditions presented deal with a fixed environment, in particular, no stationarity conditions are imposed.
We consider symmetric activated random walks on $\mathbb{Z}$, and show that the critical density $ζ_c$ satisfies $c\sqrtλ \leq ζ_c(λ) \leq C \sqrtλ$ where $λ$ denotes the sleep rate.
We study asymptotic limits of reversible random walks on tessellations via a variational approach, which relies on a specific generalized-gradient-flow formulation of the corresponding forward Kolmogorov equation. We establish sufficient conditions on sequences of tessellations and jump intensities under which a sequence of random walks converges to a diffusion process with a possibly spatially-dependent diffusion tensor.
We survey recent results of normal and anomalous diffusion of two types of random motions with long memory in ${\Bbb R}^d$ or ${\Bbb Z}^d$. The first class consists of random walks on ${\Bbb Z}^d$ in divergence-free random drift field, modelling the motion of a particle suspended in time-stationary incompressible turbulent flow. The second class consists of self-repelling random diffusions, where the diffusing particle is pushed by the negative gradient of its own occupation time measure towards regions less visited in the past. We establish normal diffusion (with square-root-of-time scaling a…
The myopic (or `true') self-avoiding walk model (MSAW) was introduced in the physics literature by Amit, Parisi and Peliti (1983). It is a random motion in Z^d pushed towards domains less visited in the past by a kind of negative gradient of the occupation time measure. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of MSAW in the non-recurrent dimensions. For a wide class of self-interaction functions, we identify a natural stationary (in time) and ergodic distribution of the environment (the local time profile) as seen from the moving particle and we establish diffusive lower and upper bounds for t…
We consider real random walks with finite variance. We prove an optimal integrability result for the diffusively rescaled maximum, when the walk or its bridge is conditioned to stay positive, or to avoid zero. As an application, we prove tightness under diffusive rescaling for general pinning and wetting models based on random walks.
We consider a recurrent random walk on a rooted tree in random environment given by a branching random walk. Up to the first return to the root, its edge local times form a Multi-type Galton-Watson tree with countably infinitely many types. When the walk is the diffusive or sub-diffusive, by studying the maximal type of this Galton-Watson tree, we establish the asymptotic behaviour of the largest local times of this walk during n excursions, under the annealed law.
We study the enhanced diffusivity in the so called elephant random walk model with stops (ERWS) by including symmetric random walk steps at small probability $ε$. At any $ε> 0$, the large time behavior transitions from sub-diffusive at $ε= 0$ to diffusive in a wedge shaped parameter regime where the diffusivity is strictly above that in the un-perturbed ERWS model in the $ε\downarrow 0$ limit. The perturbed ERWS model is shown to be solvable with the first two moments and their asymptotics calculated exactly in both one and two space dimensions. The model provides a discrete analytical setting…
We extend the notion of the associated random walk and the Wald martingale in random walks where the increments are independent and identically distributed to the more general case of stationary ergodic increments. Examples are given where the increments are Markovian or Gaussian, and an application in queueing is considered.
We consider diffusivity of random walks with transition probabilities depending on the number of consecutive traversals of the last traversed edge, the so called senile reinforced random walk (SeRW). In one dimension, the walk is known to be sub-diffusive with identity reinforcement function. We perturb the model by introducing a small probability $δ$ of escaping the last traversed edge at each step. The perturbed SeRW model is diffusive for any $δ>0 $, with enhanced diffusivity ($\gg O(δ^2)$) in the small $δ$ regime. We further study stochastically perturbed SeRW models by having the last edg…
In this paper, we consider the state-dependent reflecting random walk on a half-strip. We provide explicit criteria for (positive) recurrence, and an explicit expression for the stationary distribution. As a consequence, the light-tailed behavior of the stationary distribution is proved under appropriate conditions. The key idea of the method employed here is the decomposition of the trajectory of the random walk and the main tool is the intrinsic branching structure buried in the random walk on a strip, which is different from the matrix-analytic method.
In this paper, we consider the $(1,R)$ state-dependent reflecting random walk (RW) on the half line, allowing the size of jumps to the right at maximal $R$ and to the left only 1. We provide an explicit criterion for positive recurrence and the explicit expression of the stationary distribution based on the intrinsic branching structure within the walk. As an application, we obtain the tail asymptotic of the stationary distribution in the "near critical" situation.
We introduce a variation of strong stationary times for random walks on the symmetric group. Rather than proceed in the usual fashion of accumulating larger and larger blocks of cards which may be in any order, we wait for pairs of cards to `interact', and bound the mixing time by the time taken for enough interactions to occur.
We construct a two-dimensional counterexample of a random walk in random environment (RWRE). The environment is stationary, mixing and perturbative, and the corresponding RWRE has non-trivial probability to wander off to the upper right. This is in contrast to the 0-1-law that holds for i.i.d.\ environments.
In this paper, we consider the $(L,1)$ state-dependent reflecting random walk (RW) on the half line, which is a RW allowing jumps to the left at a maxial size $L$. For this model, we provide an explicit criterion for (positive) recurrence and an explicit expression for the stationary distribution. As an application, we prove the geometric tail asymptotic behavior of the stationary distribution under certain conditions. The main tool employed in the paper is the intrinsic branching structure within the $(L,1)$-random walk.
We study the minimal random walk introduced by Kumar, Harbola and Lindenberg. It is a random process on $\{0, 1, \ldots \}$ with unbounded memory which exhibits subdiffusive, diffusive and superdiffusive regimes. We prove the law of large numbers for the whole parameter set. Then we prove the central limit theorem and the law of the iterated logarithm for the minimal random walk under diffusive and marginally superdiffusive behaviors. More interestingly, we establish a result for the minimal random walk when it possesses the three regimes; we show the convergence of its rescaled version to a n…
Our model is a constrained homogeneous random walk in a nonnegative orthant Z_+^d. The convergence to stationarity for such a random walk can often be checked by constructing a Lyapunov function. The same Lyapunov function can also be used for computing approximately the stationary distribution of this random walk, using methods developed by Meyn and Tweedie. In this paper we show that, for this type of random walks, computing the stationary probability exactly is an undecidable problem: no algorithm can exist to achieve this task. We then prove that computing large deviation rates for this mo…
We prove an optimal diffusive decay of the environment viewed by the particle in random walk among random independent conductances, with, as a main assumption, finite second moment of the conductance. Our proof, using the analytic approach of Gloria, Neukamm and Otto, is very short and elementary.
We prove a conjecture of Toth and Veto about the weak convergence of the self repelling random walk with directed edges under diffusive scaling to a uniform distribution.
In [4], we examined the use of coupling to obtain bounds on the mixing time of statistics on Markov chains. In the present paper, we consider the same general problem, but using strong stationary times rather than coupling. We discuss various types of behaviour that may occur when this is attempted, and analyse a variety of examples.
The one-dimensional elephant random walk is a typical model of discrete-time random walk with step-reinforcement, and is introduced by Schütz and Trimper (2004). It has a parameter $α\in (-1,1)$: The case $α=0$ corresponds to the simple symmetric random walk, and when $α>0$ (resp. $α<0$), the mean displacement of the walker at time $n$ grows (resp. vanishes) like $n^α$. The walk admits a phase transition at $α=1/2$ from the diffusive behavior to the superdiffusive behavior. In this paper, we study the rate of the moment convergence in the central limit theorem for the position of the walker wh…
Let $Γ$ act on a countable set V with only finitely many orbits. Given a $Γ$-invariant random environment for a Markov chain on V and a random scenery, we exhibit, under certain conditions, an equivalent stationary measure for the environment and scenery from the viewpoint of the random walker. Such theorems have been very useful in investigations of percolation on quasi-transitive graphs.
In this work, we discuss the smoothly amnesia-reinforced multidimensional elephant random walk (MARW). The scaling limit of the MARW is shown to exist in the diffusive, critical and superdiffusive regimes. We also establish the almost sure convergence in all of the three regimes. The quadratic strong law is displayed in the diffusive regime as well as in the critical regime. The mean square convergence towards a non-Gaussian random variable is established in the superdiffusive regime. Similar results for the barycenter process are also derived. Finally, the last two Sections are devoted to a d…
We study the so-called elephant random walk (ERW) which is a non-Markovian discrete-time random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ with unbounded memory which exhibits a phase transition from diffusive to superdiffusive behaviour. We prove a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem. Remarkably the central limit theorem applies not only to the diffusive regime but also to the phase transition point which is superdiffusive. Inside the superdiffusive regime the ERW converges to a non-degenerate random variable which is not normal. We also obtain explicit expressions for the correlations of increments o…
In \cite{SzT}, D. Szász and A. Telcs have shown that for the diffusively scaled, simple symmetric random walk, weak convergence to the Brownian motion holds even in the case of local impurities if $d \ge 2$. The extension of their result to finite range random walks is straightforward. Here, however, we are interested in the situation when the random walk has unbounded range. Concretely we generalize the statement of \cite{SzT} to unbounded random walks whose jump distribution belongs to the domain of attraction of the normal law. We do this first: for diffusively scaled random walks on $\math…
We consider a two dimensional reflecting random walk on the nonnegative integer quadrant. This random walk is assumed to be skip free in the direction to the boundary of the quadrant, but may have unbounded jumps in the opposite direction, which are referred to as upward jumps. We are interested in the tail asymptotic behavior of its stationary distribution, provided it exists. Assuming the upward jump size distributions have light tails, we completely find the rough tail asymptotics of the marginal stationary distributions in all directions. This generalizes the corresponding results for the …
We survey distributional properties of $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued cocycles of finite measure preserving ergodic transformations (or, equivalently, of stationary random walks in $\mathbb{R}^d$) which determine recurrence or transience.
The problems considered in the present paper have their roots in two different cultures. The 'true' (or myopic) self-avoiding walk model (TSAW) was introduced in the physics literature by Amit, Parisi and Peliti. This is a nearest neighbor non-Markovian random walk in Z^d which prefers to jump to those neighbors which were less visited in the past. The self-repelling Brownian polymer model (SRBP), initiated in the probabilistic literature by Durrett and Rogers (independently of the physics community), is the continuous space-time counterpart: a diffusion in R^d pushed by the negative gradient …
Let $a\in\mathbb{R}$ denote an unknown stationary target with a known distribution $μ\in\mathcal{P(\mathbb{R}})$, the space of probability measures on $\mathbb{R}$. A diffusive searcher $X(\cdot)$ sets out from the origin to locate the target. The time to locate the target is $T_a=\inf\{t\ge0: X(t)=a\}$. The searcher has a given constant diffusion rate $D>0$, but its drift $b$ can be set by the search designer from a natural admissible class $\mathcal{D}_μ$ of drifts. Thus, the diffusive searcher is a Markov process generated by the operator $L=\frac D2\frac{d^2}{dx^2}+b(x)\frac d{dx}$. % equi…
We revisit the statistics of extremes and records of symmetric random walks with stochastic resetting, extending earlier studies in several directions. We put forward a diffusive scaling regime (symmetric step length distribution with finite variance, weak resetting probability) where the maximum of the walk and the number of its records up to discrete time $n$ become asymptotically proportional to each other for single typical trajectories. Their distributions obey scaling laws ruled by a common two-parameter scaling function, interpolating between a half-Gaussian and a Gumbel law. The exact …
We prove that random walks in random environments, that are exponentially mixing in space and time, are almost surely diffusive, in the sense that their scaling limit is given by the Wiener measure.
We consider a symmetric random walk on the $ν$-dimensional lattice, whose exit probability from the origin is modified by an antisymmetric perturbation and prove the local central limit theorem for this process. A short-range correction to diffusive behaviour appears in any dimension along with a long-range correction in the one-dimensional case.
In this work, we focus on the stationary analysis of a specific class of continuous time Markov-modulated reflected random walks in the quarter plane with applications in the modelling of two-node Markov-modulated queueing networks with coupled queues. The transition rates of the two-dimensional process depend on the state of a finite state Markovian background process. Such a modulation is space homogeneous in the set of inner states of the two-dimensional lattice but may be different in the set of states at its boundaries. To obtain the stationary distribution, we apply the power series appr…
We consider a non-nestling random walk in a product random environment. We assume an exponential moment for the step of the walk, uniformly in the environment. We prove an invariance principle (functional central limit theorem) under almost every environment for the centered and diffusively scaled walk. The main point behind the invariance principle is that the quenched mean of the walk behaves subdiffusively.
We examine the stationary distribution of random walks on directed graphs. In particular, we focus on the {\em principal ratio}, which is the ratio of maximum to minimum values of vertices in the stationary distribution. We give an upper bound for this ratio over all strongly connected graphs on $n$ vertices. We characterize all graphs achieving the upper bound and we give explicit constructions for these extremal graphs. Additionally, we show that under certain conditions, the principal ratio is tightly bounded. We also provide counterexamples to show the principal ratio cannot be tightly bou…
We focus on the three-state quantum walk(QW) in one dimension. In this paper, we give the stationary measure in general condition, originated from the eigenvalue problem. Firstly, we get the transfer matrices by our new recipe, and solve the eigenvalue problem. Then we obtain the general form of the stationary measure for concrete initial state and eigenvalue. We also show some specific examples of the stationary measure for the three-state QW. One of the interesting and crucial future problems is to make clear the whole picture of the set of stationary measures.
This paper is a sequel to Chaika and Krishnan [arXiv:1612.00434]. We again consider translation invariant measures on families of nearest-neighbor semi-infinite walks on the integer lattice Z^d. We assume that once walks meet, they coalesce. We consider various entropic properties of these systems. We show that in systems with completely positive entropy, bi-infinite trajectories must carry entropy. In the case of directed walks in dimension 2 we show that positive entropy guarantees that all trajectories cannot be bi-infinite. To show that our theorems are proper, we construct a stationary di…
We construct strong stationary dual chains for Ising model on a circle, non-symmetric random walk on square lattice and a random walk on hypercube. The strong stationary dual chains are all sharp and have the same state space as original chains. We use Möbius monotonicity of these chains with respect to natural orderings of the corresponding state spaces. This method provides an easy way to find eigenvalues in the Ising model and for a random walk on hypercube. Keywords: Markov chains; stochastic monotonicity; eigenvalues; Möbius monotonicity; strong stationary duality; strong stationary times…
We prove an invariance principle for continuous-time random walks in a dynamically averaging environment on $\mathbb Z$. In the beginning, the conductances may fluctuate substantially, but we assume that as time proceeds, the fluctuations decrease according to a typical diffusive scaling and eventually approach constant unit conductances. The proof relies on a coupling with the standard continuous time simple random walk.
Consider a random walk among random conductances on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d\geq 2$. We study the quenched limit law under the usual diffusive scaling of the random walk conditioned to have its first coordinate positive. We show that the conditional limit law is the product of a Brownian meander and a $(d-1)$-dimensional Brownian motion.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of occupation times of a transient random walk in quenched random environment on a strip in a sub-diffusive regime. The asymptotic behaviour of hitting times, which is a more traditional object of study, is the exactly same. As a particular case, we solve a long standing problem of describing the asymptotic behaviour of a random walk with bounded jumps on a one-dimensional lattice
We study three basic diffusion-controlled reaction processes -- annihilation, coalescence, and aggregation. We examine the evolution starting with the most natural inhomogeneous initial configuration where a half-line is uniformly filled by particles, while the complementary half-line is empty. We show that the total number of particles that infiltrate the initially empty half-line is finite and has a stationary distribution. We determine the evolution of the average density from which we derive the average total number N of particles in the initially empty half-line; e.g., for annihilation \l…
We introduce an original way to estimate the memory parameter of the elephant random walk, a fascinating discrete time random walk on integers having a complete memory of its entire history. Our estimator is nothing more than a quasi-maximum likelihood estimator, based on a second order Taylor approximation of the log-likelihood function. We show the almost sure convergence of our estimate in the diffusive, critical and superdiffusive regimes. The local asymptotic normality of our statistical procedure is established in the diffusive regime, while the local asymptotic mixed normality is proven…
We consider stationary measures of the one-dimensional discrete-time quantum walks (QWs) with two chiralities, which is defined by a 2 times 2 unitary matrix U. In our previous paper [15], we proved that any uniform measure becomes the stationary measure of the QW by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem. This paper reports that non-uniform measures are also stationary measures of the QW except U is diagonal. For diagonal matrices, we show that any stationary measure is uniform. Moreover, we prove that any uniform measure becomes a stationary measure for more general QWs not by solving …
