Given $A,B\in M_n(\mathbb R)$, we consider the Cauchy problem for partially dissipative hyperbolic systems having the form \begin{equation*}
\partial_{t}u+A\partial_{x}u+Bu=0, \end{equation*} with the aim of providing a detailed description of the large-time behavior. Sharp $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates are established for the distance between the solution to the system and a time-asymptotic profile, where the profile is the superposition of diffusion waves and exponentially decaying waves.
Hyperbolic-parabolic systems have spatially homogenous stationary states. When the dissipation is weak, one can derive weakly nonlinear-dissipative approximations that govern perturbations of these constant states. These approximations are quadratically nonlinear. When the original system has an entropy, the approximation is formally dissipative in a natural Hilbert space. We show that when the approximation is strictly dissipative it has global weak solutions for all initial data in that Hilbert space. We also prove a weak-strong uniqueness theorem for it. In addition, we give a Kawashima typ…
In this note we provide some precise estimates explaining the diffusive structure of partially dissipative systems with time-dependent coefficients satisfying a uniform Kalman rank condition. Precisely, we show that under certain (natural) conditions solutions to a partially dissipative hyperbolic system are asymptotically equivalent to solutions of a corresponding parabolic equation. The approach is based on an elliptic WKB analysis for small frequencies in combination with exponential stability for large frequencies due to results of Beauchard and Zuazua and arguments of perturbation theory.
This paper considers the Cauchy problem for the quasilinear hyperbolic system of balance laws in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge 2$. The system is partially dissipative in the sense that there is an eigen-family violating the Kawashima condition. By imposing certain supplementary degeneracy conditions with respect to the non-dissipative eigen-family, global unique smooth solutions near constant equilibria are constructed. The proof is based on the introduction of the partially normalized coordinates, a delicate structural analysis, a family of scaled energy estimates with minimum fractional derivative c…
In the context of hyperbolic systems of balance laws, the Shizuta-Kawashima coupling condition guarantees that all the variables of the system are dissipative even though the system is not totally dissipative. Hence it plays a crucial role in terms of sufficient conditions for the global in time existence of classical solutions. However, it is easy to find physically based models that do not satisfy this condition, especially in several space dimensions. In this paper, we consider two simple examples of partially dissipative hyperbolic systems violating the Shizuta-Kawashima condition ([SK]) i…
This paper is concerned with quasilinear systems of partial differential equations consisting of two hyperbolic operators interacting dissipatively. Its main theorem establishes global-in-time existence and asymptotic stability of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem close to homogeneous reference states. Notably, the operators are not required to be symmetric hyperbolic, instead merely the existence of symbolic symmetrizers is assumed. The dissipation is characterized by conditions equivalent to the uniform decay of all Fourier modes at the reference state. On a technical level, the theory …
We consider a class of semi-linear dissipative hyperbolic equations in which the operator associated to the linear part has a nontrivial kernel. Under appropriate assumptions on the nonlinear term, we prove that all solutions decay to 0, as t -> +infinity, at least as fast as a suitable negative power of t. Moreover, we prove that this decay rate is optimal in the sense that there exists a nonempty open set of initial data for which the corresponding solutions decay exactly as that negative power of t. Our results are stated and proved in an abstract Hilbert space setting, and then applied to …
We study the asymptotic time behavior of global smooth solutions to general entropy dissipative hyperbolic systems of balance law in m space dimensions, under the Shizuta-Kawashima condition. We show that these solutions approach constant equilibrium state in the Lp-norm at a rate O(t^(-m/2(1-1/p))), as t tends to $\infty$, for p in [min (m,2),+ \infty]. Moreover, we can show that we can approximate, with a faster order of convergence, theconservative part of the solution in terms of the linearized hyperbolic operator for m >= 2, and by a parabolic equation in the spirit of Chapman-Enskog expa…
We consider a model of liquid crystals, based on a nonlinear hyperbolic system of differential equations, that represents an inviscid version of the model proposed by Qian and Sheng. A new concept of dissipative solution is proposed, for which a global-in-time existence theorem is shown. The dissipative solutions enjoy the following properties: (i) they exist globally in time for any finite energy initial data; (ii) dissipative solutions enjoying certain smoothness are classical solutions; (iii) a dissipative solution coincides with a strong solution originating from the same initial data as l…
We analyse dissipative boundary conditions for nonlinear hyperbolic systems in one space dimension. We show that a previous known sufficient condition for exponential stability with respect to the C^1-norm is optimal. In particular a known weaker sufficient condition for exponential stability with respect to the H^2-norm is not sufficient for the exponential stability with respect to the C^1-norm. Hence, due to the nonlinearity, even in the case of classical solutions, the exponential stability depends strongly on the norm considered. We also give a new sufficient condition for the exponential…
We prove the well--posedness of a dynamical perfect plasticity model under general assumptions on the stress constraint set and on the reference configuration. The problem is studied by combining both calculus of variations and hyperbolic methods. The hyperbolic point of view enables one to derive a class of dissipative boundary conditions, somehow intermediate between homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann ones. By using variational methods, we show the existence and uniqueness of solutions. Then we establish the equivalence between the original variational solutions and generalized entropic--diss…
This work is concerned with ($N$-component) hyperbolic system of balance laws in arbitrary space dimensions. Under entropy dissipative assumption and the Shizuta-Kawashima algebraic condition, a general theory on the well-posedness of classical solutions in the framework of Chemin-Lerner's spaces with critical regularity is established. To do this, we first explore the functional space theory and develop an elementary fact that indicates the relation between homogeneous and inhomogeneous Chemin-Lerner's spaces. Then this fact allows to prove the local well-posedness for general data and global…
In this paper we introduce and study a new kind of hyperbolic geometric flows --dissipative hyperbolic geometric flow. This kind of flow is defined by a system of quasilinear wave equations with dissipative terms. Some interesting exact solutions are given, in particular, a new concept-- hyperbolic Ricci soliton is introduced and some of its geometric properties are described. We also establish the short-time existence and uniqueness theorem for the dissipative hyperbolic geometric flow, and prove the nonlinear stability of the flow defined on the Euclidean space of dimension larger than 2. Wa…
We study the problem of stabilization for the acoustic system with a spatially distributed damping. Imposing various hypotheses on the structural properties of the damping term, we identify either exponential or polynomial decay of solutions with growing time. Expo- nential decay rate is shown by means of a time domain approach, reducing the problem to an observability inequality to be verified for solutions of the associated conservative problem. In addition, we show a polynomial stabilization result, where the proof uses a frequency domain method and combines a contradiction argument with th…
Here we investigate global strong solutions for a class of partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the framework of critical homogeneous Besov spaces. Our primary goal is to extend the analysis of our previous paper [10] to a functional framework where the low frequencies of the solution are only bounded in L p-type spaces with p larger than 2. This enables us to prescribe weaker smallness conditions for global well-posedness and to get a more accurate information on the qualitative properties of the constructed solutions. Our existence theorem in particular applies to the multi-dimensiona…
In this paper, we study the boundary feedback stabilization of a quasilinear hyperbolic system with partially dissipative structure. Thanks to this structure, we construct a suitable Lyapunov function which leads to the exponential stability to the equilibrium of the $H^2$ solution. As an application, we also obtain the feedback stabilization for the Saint-Venant-Exner model under physical boundary conditions.
This paper considers systems of balance law with a dissipative non local source. A global in time well posedness result is obtained. Estimates on the dependence of solutions from the flow and from the source term are also provided. The technique relies on a recent result on quasidifferential equations in metric spaces.
Here we develop a method for investigating global strong solutions of partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the critical regularity setting. Compared to the recent works by Kawashima and Xu, we use hybrid Besov spaces with different regularity exponent in low and high frequency. This allows to consider more general data and to track the exact dependency on the dissipation parameter for the solution. Our approach enables us to go beyond the L^2 framework in the treatment of the low frequencies of the solution, which is totally new, to the best of our knowledge. Focus is on the one-dimensi…
We are concerned with quasilinear symmetrizable partially dissipative hyperbolic systems in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $d\geq2$. Following our recent work [10] dedicated to the one-dimensional case, we establish the existence of global strong solutions and decay estimates in the critical regularity setting whenever the system under consideration satisfies the so-called (SK) (for Shizuta-Kawashima) condition. Our results in particular apply to the compressible Euler system with damping in the velocity equation. Compared to the papers by Kawashima and Xu [27, 28] devoted to similar issu…
We discuss a purely variational approach to the study of a wide class of second order nonhomogeneous dissipative hyperbolic PDEs. Precisely, we focus on the wave-like equations that present also a nonzero source term and a first-order-in-time linear term. The paper carries on the research program initiated in (Serra&Tilli'12), and developed in (Serra&Tilli'16), (Tentarelli&Tilli '18), on the De Giorgi approach to hyperbolic equations.
This note establishes properties of a model of dissipative fluid dynamics as a symmetric hyperbolic system by which Ruggeri once triggered the development of Rational Extended Thermodynamics. These properties, i.e., (1) convergence of solutions to those of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations and (2) nonlinear asymptotic stability of homogeneous reference solutions, also hold in the analogous situation for barotropic fluids.
We consider the initial value problem for a pseudodifferential equation with first order hyperbolic part, and an order $γ> 0$ dissipative term. Under an assumption, depending on an integer parameter $L \geq 2$ such that $2 γ< L$, we construct for this initial value problem a parametrix that is a Fourier integral operator of type $ρ= 1 - γ/L$. The assumption implies that where the principal symbol of the dissipative term is zero, the terms of order up to $L-1$ in its Taylor series also vanish.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for a hyperbolic equation $Q(\partial_t,\partial_x)u=0$ of any order $m\geq3$, where $t\geq0$ and $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$, and $Q=P_m+P_{m-1}+P_{m-2}$ is a sum of homogeneous hyperbolic polynomials $P_{m-j}$ of order $m-j$. We assume the sufficient and necessary condition which guarantees the strict stability of the polynomial $Q(λ,iξ)$, for any $ξ\neq0$. Under this assumption, we derive a polynomial decay rate for the energy of the problem, in different scenarios of interlacing of the polynomials $P_{m-j}(λ,ξ)$, and we describe the asymptotic profile o…
In this work we want to explore the relationship between certain eigenvalue condition for the symbols of first order partial differential operators describing evolution processes and the linear and nonlinear stability of their stationary solutions.
This paper is devoted to confront two different approaches to the problem of dynam-ical perfect plasticity. Interpreting this model as a constrained boundary value Friedrichs' system enables one to derive admissible hyperbolic boundary conditions. Using variational methods, we show the well-posedness of this problem in a suitable weak measure theoretic setting. Thanks to the property of finite speed propagation, we establish a new regularity result for the solution in short time. Finally, we prove that this variational solution is actually a solution of the hyperbolic formulation in a suitable…
We give a new decay framework for general dissipative hyperbolic system and hyperbolic-parabolic composite system, which allow us to pay less attention on the traditional spectral analysis in comparison with previous efforts. New ingredients lie in the high-frequency and low-frequency decomposition of a pseudo-differential operator and an interpolation inequality related to homogeneous Besov spaces of negative order. Furthermore, we develop the Littlewood-Paley pointwise energy estimates and new time-weighted energy functionals to establish the optimal decay estimates on the framework of spati…
In this paper, by using Fourier splitting method and the expanded properties of decay character $r^*$, we establish the algebraic decay rate of higher order derivative of solutions to 2D dissipative quasi-geostrophic flows.
Combining pointwise Green's function bounds obtained in a companion paper [MZ.2] with earlier, spectral stability results obtained in [HuZ], we establish nonlinear orbital stability of small amplitude viscous shock profiles for the class of dissipative symmetric hyperbolic-parabolic systems identified by Kawashima [Kaw], notably including compressible Navier--Stokes equations and the equations of magnetohydrodynamics, obtaining sharp rates of decay in $L^p$ with respect to small $L^1\cap H^3$ perturbations, $2\le p\le \infty$. Our analysis follows the approach introduced in [MZ.1] to treat sta…
This paper is concerned with the decay structure for linear symmetric hyperbolic systems with relaxation. When the relaxation matrix is symmetric, the dissipative structure of the systems is completely characterized by the Kawashima-Shizuta stability condition formulated in \cite{UKS84,SK85}, and we obtain the asymptotic stability result together with the explicit time-decay rate under that stability condition. However, some physical models which satisfy the stability condition have non-symmetric relaxation term (cf.~the Timoshenko system and the Euler-Maxwell system). Moreover, it had been al…
We address the study of decay rates of solutions to dissipative equations. The characterization of these rates is given for a wide class of linear systems by the {\em decay character}, which is a number associated to the initial datum that describes the behavior of the datum near the origin in frequency space. We then use the decay character and the Fourier Splitting method to obtain upper and lower bounds for decay of solutions to appropriate dissipative nonlinear equations, both in the incompressible and compressible case.
We study the global existence and decay estimates for nonlinear wave equations with the space-time dependent dissipative term in an exterior domain. The linear dissipative effect may vanish in a compact space region. Moreover the nonlinear terms need not divergence form. For getting the higher order energy estimates, we introduce an argument using the rescaling. The method is useful to control derivatives of the dissipative coefficient.
We give a factorization procedure for a strictly hyperbolic partial differential operator of second order with logarithmic slow scale coefficients. From this we can microlocally diagonalize the full wave operator which results in a coupled system of two first-order pseudodifferential equations in a microlocal sense. Under the assumption that the full wave equation is microlocal regular in a fixed domain of the phase space, we can approximate the problem by two one-way wave equations where a dissipative term is added to suppress singularities outside the given domain. We obtain well-posedness o…
This article gives an energy decay result for small data solutions to a class of semilinear wave equations in two space dimensions possessing weakly dissipative structure relevant to the Agemi condition.
We study global existence and decay estimates for quasilinear wave equations with dissipative terms in the Sobolev space $H^L \times H^{L-1}$, where $L \geq [d/2]+3$. The linear dissipative terms depend on space variable coefficient, and these terms may vanish in some compact region. For the proof of global existence, we need estimates of higher order energies. To control derivatives of the dissipative coefficient, we introduce an argument using the rescaling. Furthermore we get the decay estimates with additional assumptions on the initial data. To obtain the decay estimates, the rescaling ar…
In this paper, we show that the fastest decay rate for some Petrowsky-like dissipative systems is given by the supremum of the real part of the spectrum of the infinitesimal generator of the underlying semigroup, if the corresponding operator satisfied some spectral gap condition. We give also some applications to illustrate our setting.
In this paper, we study the large-time behavior of solutions to a class of partially dissipative linear hyperbolic systems with applications in velocity-jump processes in several dimensions. Given integers $n,d\ge 1$, let $\mathbf A:=(A^1,\dots,A^d)\in (\mathbb R^{n\times n})^d$ be a matrix-vector, where $A^j\in\mathbb R^{n\times n}$, and let $B\in \mathbb R^{n\times n}$ be not required to be symmetric but have one single eigenvalue zero, we consider the Cauchy problem for linear $n\times n$ systems having the form \begin{equation*} \partial_{t}u+\mathbf A\cdot \nabla_{\mathbf x} u+Bu=0,\qquad…
In this article, we investigate the BV stability of $2\times 2$ hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with strictly positive velocities under dissipative boundary conditions. More precisely, we derive sufficient conditions guaranteeing the exponential stability of the system under consideration for entropy solutions in BV. Our proof is based on a front tracking algorithm used to construct approximate piecewise constants solutions whose BV norms are controlled through a Lyapunov functional. This Lyapunov functional is inspired by the one proposed in J. Glimm's seminal work [J. Glimm, Comm. Pu…
Very recently, a new decay framework has been given by [51] for linearized dissipative hyperbolic systems satisfying the Kawashima-Shizuta condition on the framework of Besov spaces, which allows to pay less attention on the traditional spectral analysis. However, owing to interpolation techniques, the analysis remains valid only for nonlinear systems in higher dimensions $(n\geq3)$ and the corresponding case of low dimensions was left open, which provides the main motivation of this work. Firstly, we develop new time-decay properties on the frequency-localization Duhamel principle. Furthermor…
We consider the Cauchy problem for systems of cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations in one space dimension. Under a suitable structural condition on the nonlinearity, we will show that the small amplitude solution gains an additional logarithmic decay in comparison with the free evolution in the sense of $L^p$, $2\le p \le \infty$.
For general hyperbolic systems of conservation laws we show that dissipative weak solutions belonging to an appropriate Besov space $B^{α,\infty}_q$ and satisfying a one-sided bound condition are unique within the class of dissipative solutions. The exponent $α>1/2$ is universal independently of the nature of the nonlinearity and the Besov regularity need only be imposed in space when the system is expressed in appropriate variables. The proof utilises a commutator estimate which allows for an extension of the relative entropy method to the required regularity setting. The systems of elasticit…
We consider a degenerate abstract wave equation with a time-dependent propagation speed. We investigate the influence of a strong dissipation, namely a friction term that depends on a power of the elastic operator. We discover a threshold effect. If the propagation speed is regular enough, then the damping prevails, and therefore the initial value problem is well-posed in Sobolev spaces. Solutions also exhibit a regularizing effect analogous to parabolic problems. As expected, the stronger is the damping, the lower is the required regularity. On the contrary, if the propagation speed is not re…
In \cite{GW12} (Y. Guo, Y. Wang, Decay of dissipative equations and negative Sobolev spaces, Commun. Partial Differ. Equ. 37 (2012) 2165--2208), Y. Guo and Y. Wang developed a general new energy method for proving the optimal time decay rates of the solutions to dissipative equations. In this paper, we generalize this method in the framework of homogeneous Besov spaces. Moreover, we apply this method to a model arising from electro-hydrodynamics, which is a coupled system of the Navier-Stokes equations and the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations through charge transport and external forcing terms.…
We consider a general hyperbolic model of chemotaxis in the multidimensional case. For this system we show the global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem and we determine their asymptotic behavior. Since this model does not enter in the classical framework of dissipative problems, we analyze it combining the features of the hyperbolic and the parabolic parts and using detailed decay estimates of the Green function.
In this paper, we first generalize a new energy approach, developed by Y. Guo and Y. Wang \cite{GW12}, in the framework of homogeneous Besov spaces for proving the optimal temporal decay rates of solutions to the fractional power dissipative equation, then we apply this approach to the supercritical and critical quasi-geostrophic equation and the critical Keller-Segel system. We show that the negative Besov norm of solutions is preserved along time evolution, and obtain the optimal temporal decay rates of the spatial derivatives of solutions by the Fourier splitting approach and the interpolat…
This paper is concerned with an abstract dissipative hyperbolic equation with time-dependent coefficient. Under an assumption which ensures that the energy does not decay, this paper provides a condition on the coefficient, which is necessary and sufficient so that the solutions tend to the solutions of the free wave equation.
In earlier works, we have shown the uniform decay of the local energy of the damped wave equation in exterior domain when the damper is spatially localized near captive rays. In order to have uniform decay of the total energy, the damper has also to act at space infinity. In this work, we establish uniform decay of both the local and global energies. The rates of decay turns out to be the same as those for the heat equation, which shows that an effective damper at space infinity strengthens the parabolic structure in the equation.
