Let $A$ and $B$ be two $N$ by $N$ deterministic Hermitian matrices and let $U$ be an $N$ by $N$ Haar distributed unitary matrix. It is well known that the spectral distribution of the sum $H=A+UBU^*$ converges weakly to the free additive convolution of the spectral distributions of $A$ and $B$, as $N$ tends to infinity. We establish the optimal convergence rate ${\frac{1}{N}}$ in the bulk of the spectrum.
We develop an improved version of the stochastic semigroup approach to study the edge of $β$-ensembles pioneered by Gorin and Shkolnikov, and later extended to rank-one additive perturbations by the author and Shkolnikov. Our method is applicable to a significantly more general class of random tridiagonal matrices than that considered in these previous works, including some non-symmetric cases that are not covered by the stochastic operator formalism of Bloemendal, Ramírez, Rider, and Virág. We present two applications of our main results: Firstly, we prove the convergence of $β$-Laguerre-type…
We review the application of the notion of local convergence on locally finite randomly rooted graphs, known as Benjamini-Schramm convergence, to the calculation of the global eigenvalue density of random matrices from the beta-Gaussian and beta-Laguerre ensembles. By regarding a random matrix as the weighted adjacency matrix of a graph, and choosing the root of such a graph with uniform probability, one can use the Benjamini-Schramm limit to produce the spectral measure of the adjacency operator of the limiting graph. We illustrate how the Wigner semicircle law and the Marchenko-Pastur law ar…
The topic of this paper is the typical behavior of the spectral measures of large random matrices drawn from several ensembles of interest, including in particular matrices drawn from Haar measure on the classical Lie groups, random compressions of random Hermitian matrices, and the so-called random sum of two independent random matrices. In each case, we estimate the expected Wasserstein distance from the empirical spectral measure to a deterministic reference measure, and prove a concentration result for that distance. As a consequence we obtain almost sure convergence of the empirical spect…
We show that the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue of a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix of size $N$ converge to the Tracy--Widom laws at a rate $O(N^{-1/3+ω})$, as $N$ tends to infinity. For Wigner matrices this improves the previous rate $O(N^{-2/9+ω})$ obtained by Bourgade [5] for generalized Wigner matrices. Our result follows from a Green function comparison theorem, originally introduced by Erdős, Yau and Yin [19] to prove edge universality, on a finer spectral parameter scale with improved error estimates. The proof relies on the continuous Green function flow indu…
In this article, we will consider Wishart Matrices with correlated entries, but with a strictly log-concave law. It has been shown by A.Pajor and L.Pastur that the empirical measures of such matrices converges. We will show, under some symmetry and convergence hypotheses, that in this case the central limit theorem for linear statistics holds around their limit, and deduce the convergence of the support to the support of the limiting measure. We also provide the convergence of the Expectation and the Covariance.
Understanding the limiting behavior of eigenvalues of random matrices is the central problem of random matrix theory. Classical limit results are known for many models, and there has been significant recent progress in obtaining more quantitative, non-asymptotic results. In this paper, we describe a systematic approach to bounding rates of convergence and proving tail inequalities for the empirical spectral measures of a wide variety of random matrix ensembles. We illustrate the approach by proving asymptotically almost sure rates of convergence of the empirical spectral measure in the followi…
We study the joint convergence of independent copies of several patterned matrices in the noncommutative probability setup. In particular, joint convergence holds for the well known Wigner, Toeplitz, Hankel, reverse circulant and symmetric circulant matrices. We also study some properties of the limits. In particular, we show that copies of Wigner becomes asymptotically free with copies of any of the above other matrices.
In this article, we obtain a super-exponential rate of convergence in total variation between the traces of the first $m$ powers of an $n\times n$ random unitary matrices and a $2m$-dimensional Gaussian random variable. This generalizes previous results in the scalar case to the multivariate setting, and we also give the precise dependence on the dimensions $m$ and $n$ in the estimate with explicit constants. We are especially interested in the regime where $m$ grows with $n$ and our main result basically states that if $m\ll \sqrt{n}$, then the rate of convergence in the Gaussian approximatio…
In this paper we discuss the process convergence of the time dependent fluctuations of linear eigenvalue statistics of random circulant matrices with independent Brownian motion entries, as the dimension of the matrix tends to $\infty $. Our derivation is based on the trace formula of circulant matrix, method of moments and some combinatorial techniques.
We discuss regularization by noise of the spectrum of large random non-Normal matrices. Under suitable conditions, we show that the regularization of a sequence of matrices that converges in *-moments to a regular element $a$, by the addition of a polynomially vanishing Gaussian Ginibre matrix, forces the empirical measure of eigenvalues to converge to the Brown measure of $a$.
First, we consider a nonnegative homogeneous block tri-diagonal matrix and obtain its convergence parameter, where some results in the field of matrix analytic method are extended to the case where block matrices have countably infinite dimension. Second, we apply our results to a multi-dimensional QBD process and obtain lower bounds for the directional asymptotic decay rates of the stationary distribution.
This article deals with the limiting spectral distribution and joint convergence of reverse circulant and symmetric circulant matrices with independent entries. These results are already proved in articles Bose and Sen (2008) \cite{bose_sen_LSD_EJP}, and Bose, Hazra and Saha (2011) \cite{bose_saha_patter_JC_annals}, respectively. But this article provides alternate proofs of these results which are shorter than the existing proofs. Our method is mainly based on moment method.
Pickrell has fully characterized the unitarily invariant probability measures on infinite Hermitian matrices, and an alternative proof of this classification has been found by Olshanski and Vershik. Borodin and Olshanski deduced from this proof that under any of these invariant measures, the extreme eigenvalues of the minors, divided by the dimension, converge almost surely. In this paper, we prove that one also has a weak convergence for the eigenvectors, in a sense which is made precise. After mapping Hermitian to unitary matrices via the Cayley transform, our result extends a convergence pr…
We consider ensembles of Wigner matrices, whose entries are (up to the symmetry constraints) independent and identically distributed random variables. We show the convergence of the Stieltjes transform towards the Stieltjes transform of the semicircle law on optimal scales and with the optimal rate. Our bounds improve previous results, in particular from [22,10], by removing the logarithmic corrections. As applications, we establish the convergence of the eigenvalue counting functions with the rate $(\log N)/N$ and the rigidity of the eigenvalues of Wigner matrices on the same scale. These bou…
We study point process convergence for sequences of iid random walks. The objective is to derive asymptotic theory for the extremes of these random walks. We show convergence of the maximum random walk to the Gumbel distribution under the existence of a $(2+δ)$th moment. We make heavily use of precise large deviation results for sums of iid random variables. As a consequence, we derive the joint convergence of the off-diagonal entries in sample covariance and correlation matrices of a high-dimensional sample whose dimension increases with the sample size. This generalizes known results on the …
We study the rate of convergence of the empirical spectral distribution of products of independent non-Hermitian random matrices to the power of the Circular Law. The distance to the deterministic limit distribution will be measured in terms of a uniform Kolmogorov-like distance. First, we prove that for products of Ginibre matrices, the optimal rate is given by $\mathcal O (1/\sqrt n)$, which is attained with overwhelming probability up to a logarithmic correction. Avoiding the edge, the rate of convergence of the mean empirical spectral distribution is even faster. Second, we show that also …
We study the statistics of the largest eigenvalues of real symmetric and sample covariance matrices when the entries are heavy tailed. Extending the result obtained by Soshnikov in \cite{Sos1}, we prove that, in the absence of the fourth moment, the top eigenvalues behave, in the limit, as the largest entries of the matrix.
In this paper, convergence rates of the spectral distributions of quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrices are investigated. We show that under conditions of finite 6th moments, the expected spectral distribution of a large quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrix converges to the semicircular law in a rate of $O(n^{-1/2})$ and the spectral distribution itself converges to the semicircular law in rates $O_p(n^{-2/5})$ and $O_{a.s.}(n^{-2/5+η})$. Those results include GSE as a special case.
Motivated by the theory of inhomogeneous Markov chains, we determine a sufficient condition for the convergence to 0 of a general product formed from a sequence of real or complex matrices. When the matrices have a common invariant subspace $H$, we give a sufficient condition for the convergence to 0 on $H$ of a general product. Our result is applied to obtain a condition for the weak ergodicity of an inhomogeneous Markov chain. We compare various types of contractions which may be defined for a single matrix, such as paracontraction, $l$--contraction, and $H$--contraction, where $H$ is an inv…
It is known that the joint limit distribution of independent Wigner matrices satisfies a very special asymptotic independence, called freeness. We study the joint convergence of a few other patterned matrices, providing a framework to accommodate other joint laws. In particular, the matricial limits of symmetric circulants and reverse circulants satisfy, respectively, the classical independence and the half independence. The matricial limits of Toeplitz and Hankel matrices do not seem to submit to any easy or explicit independence/dependence notions. Their limits are not independent, free or h…
It is known that the empirical spectral distribution of random matrices obtained from linear codes of increasing length converges to the well-known Marchenko-Pastur law, if the Hamming distance of the dual codes is at least 5. In this paper, we prove that the convergence in probability is at least of the order $n^{-1/4}$ where $n$ is the length of the code.
We establish a connection between the $L^2$ norm of sums of dilated functions whose $j$th Fourier coefficients are $\mathcal{O}(j^{-α})$ for some $α\in (1/2,1)$, and the spectral norms of certain greatest common divisor (GCD) matrices. Utilizing recent bounds for these spectral norms, we obtain sharp conditions for the convergence in $L^2$ and for the almost everywhere convergence of series of dilated functions.
This paper studies the behaviour of the empirical eigenvalue distribution of large random matrices W_N W_N* where W_N is a ML x N matrix, whose M block lines of dimensions L x N are mutually independent Hankel matrices constructed from complex Gaussian correlated stationary random sequences. In the asymptotic regime where M \rightarrow \infty, N \rightarrow +\infty and ML/N \rightarrow c > 0, it is shown using the Stieltjes transform approach that the empirical eigenvalue distribution of W_N W_N* has a deterministic behaviour which is characterized.
It is shown that the Kolmogorov distance between the spectral distribution function of a random covariance matrix $\frac1p XX^T$, where $X$ is a $n\times p$ matrix with independent entries and the distribution function of the Marchenko-Pastur law is of order $O(n^{-1/2})$. The bounds hold {\it uniformly} for any $p$, including $\frac pn$ equal or close to 1.
In this article, we establish a near-optimal convergence rate for the CLT of linear eigenvalue statistics of Wigner matrices, in Kolmogorov-Smirnov distance. For all test functions $f\in C^5(\mathbb R)$, we show that the convergence rate is either $N^{-1/2+\varepsilon}$ or $N^{-1+\varepsilon}$, depending on the first Chebyshev coefficient of $f$ and the third moment of the diagonal matrix entries. The condition that distinguishes these two rates is necessary and sufficient. For a general class of test functions, we further identify matching lower bounds for the convergence rates. In addition, …
In this article we investigate high-dimensional banded sample covariance matrices under the regime that the sample size $n$, the dimension $p$ and the bandwidth $d$ tend simultaneously to infinity such that $$n/p\to 0 \ \ \text{and} \ \ 2d/n\to y>0.$$ It is shown that the empirical spectral distribution of those matrices almost surely converges weakly to some deterministic probability measure which is characterized by its moments. Certain restricted compositions of natural numbers play a crucial role in the evaluation of the expected moments of the empirical spectral distribution.
We analyze the empirical spectral distribution of random periodic band matrices with correlated entries. The correlation structure we study was first introduced in 2015 by Hochstättler, Kirsch and Warzel, who named their setup "almost uncorrelated" and showed convergence to the semicircle distribution in probability. We strengthen their results which turn out to be also valid almost surely. Moreover, we extend them to band matrices. Sufficient conditions for convergence to the semicircle distribution both in probability and almost surely are provided. In contrast to convergence in probability,…
In this paper we establish the limit of the empirical spectral distribution of quaternion sample covariance matrices. Suppose $\mathbf X_n = ({x_{jk}^{(n)}})_{p\times n}$ is a quaternion random matrix. For each $n$, the entries $\{x_{ij}^{(n)}\}$ are independent random quaternion variables with a common mean $μ$ and variance $σ^2>0$. It is shown that the empirical spectral distribution of the quaternion sample covariance matrix $\mathbf S_n=n^{-1}\mathbf X_n\mathbf X_n^*$ converges to the M-P law as $p\to\infty$, $n\to\infty$ and $p/n\to y\in(0,+\infty)$.
We prove that for Gaussian random normal matrices the correlation function has universal behavior. Using the technique of orthogonal polynomials and identities similar to the Christoffel-Darboux formula, we find that in the limit, as the dimension of the matrix tends to infinity, the density of eigenvalues converges to a constant inside of an ellipse and to zero outside. The convergence holds locally uniformly. At the boundary, in scaled coordinates holding the distance between eigenvalues constant, we show that the density is falling off to zero like the complementary error function. The conv…
We study the high-dimensional asymptotic regimes of correlated Wishart matrices $d^{-1}\mathcal{Y}\mathcal{Y}^T$, where $\mathcal{Y}$ is a $n\times d$ Gaussian random matrix with correlated and non-stationary entries. We prove that under different normalizations, two distinct regimes emerge as both $n$ and $d$ grow to infinity. The first regime is the one of central convergence, where the law of the properly renormalized Wishart matrices becomes close in Wasserstein distance to that of a Gaussian orthogonal ensemble matrix. In the second regime, a non-central convergence happens, and the law o…
The eigenvector empirical spectral distribution (VESD) is a useful tool in studying the limiting behavior of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of covariance matrices. In this paper, we study the convergence rate of the VESD of sample covariance matrices to the deformed Marčenko-Pastur (MP) distribution. Consider sample covariance matrices of the form $Σ^{1/2} X X^* Σ^{1/2}$, where $X=(x_{ij})$ is an $M\times N$ random matrix whose entries are independent random variables with mean zero and variance $N^{-1}$, and $Σ$ is a deterministic positive-definite matrix. We prove that the Kolmogorov distance …
We study linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with Brownian motion entries. We prove that, the centred, normalized linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices obey a central limit theorem (CLT) type result. We also discuss the convergence of linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with independent entries for odd power monomials. Our method is based on trace formula, moment method and some results of process convergence.
Distributed consensus and other linear systems with system stochastic matrices $W_k$ emerge in various settings, like opinion formation in social networks, rendezvous of robots, and distributed inference in sensor networks. The matrices $W_k$ are often random, due to, e.g., random packet dropouts in wireless sensor networks. Key in analyzing the performance of such systems is studying convergence of matrix products $W_kW_{k-1}... W_1$. In this paper, we find the exact exponential rate $I$ for the convergence in probability of the product of such matrices when time $k$ grows large, under the as…
We study the almost sure convergence of the normalized columns in an infinite product of nonnegative matrices, and the almost sure rank one property of its limit points. Given a probability on the set of $2\times2$ nonnegative matrices, with finite support $\mathcal A=\{A(0),\dots,A(s-1)\}$, and assuming that at least one of the $A(k)$ is not diagonal, the normalized columns of the product matrix $P_n=A(ω_1)\dots A(ω_n)$ converge almost surely (for the product probability) with an exponential rate of convergence if and only if the Lyapunov exponents are almost surely distinct. If this conditio…
Recently, we have classified Hermitian random matrix ensembles that are invariant under the conjugate action of the unitary group and stable with respect to matrix addition. Apart from a scaling and a shift, the whole information of such an ensemble is encoded in the stability exponent determining the ``heaviness'' of the tail and the spectral measure that describes the anisotropy of the probability distribution. In the present work, we address the question how these ensembles can be generated by the knowledge of the latter two quantities. We consider a sum of a specific construction of identi…
Let $\mathbf{B}_n=\mathbf {S}_n(\mathbf {S}_n+α_n\mathbf {T}_N)^{-1}$, where $\mathbf {S}_n$ and $\mathbf {T}_N$ are two independent sample covariance matrices with dimension $p$ and sample sizes $n$ and $N$, respectively. This is the so-called Beta matrix. In this paper, we focus on the limiting spectral distribution function and the central limit theorem of linear spectral statistics of $\mathbf {B}_n$. Especially, we do not require $\mathbf {S}_n$ or $\mathbf {T}_N$ to be invertible. Namely, we can deal with the case where $p>\max\{n,N\}$ and $p<n+N$. Therefore, our results cover many impor…
A well known conjecture of Wigner, Dyson, and Mehta asserts that the (appropriately normalized) $k$-point correlation functions of the eigenvalues of random $n \times n$ Wigner matrices in the bulk of the spectrum converge (in various senses) to the $k$-point correlation function of the Dyson sine process in the asymptotic limit $n \to \infty$. There has been much recent progress on this conjecture, in particular it has been established under a wide variety of decay, regularity, and moment hypotheses on the underlying atom distribution of the Wigner ensemble, and using various notions of conve…
We study matrices whose entries are free or exchangeable noncommutative elements in some tracial $W^*$-probability space. More precisely, we consider operator-valued Wigner and Wishart matrices and prove quantitative convergence to operator-valued semicircular elements over some subalgebra in terms of Cauchy transforms. As direct applications, we obtain explicit rates of convergence for a large class of random block matrices with independent or correlated blocks. Our approach relies on a noncommutative extension of the Lindeberg method and operator-valued Gaussian interpolation techniques.
For polynomials in independent Wigner matrices, we prove convergence of the largest singular value to the operator norm of the corresponding polynomial in free semicircular variables, under fourth moment hypotheses. We actually prove a more general result of the form "no eigenvalues outside the support of the limiting eigenvalue distribution." We build on ideas of Haagerup-Schultz-Thorbjørnsen on the one hand and Bai-Silverstein on the other. We refine the linearization trick so as to preserve self-adjointness and we develop a secondary trick bearing on the calculation of correction terms. Ins…
Since E.P.Wigner (1958) established his famous semicircle law, lots of attention has been paid by physicists, probabilists and statisticians to study the asymptotic properties of the largest eigenvalues for random matrices. Bai and Yin (1988) obtained the necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong convergence of the extreme eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix. In this paper, we consider the case of quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrices. We prove the necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong convergence of extreme eigenvalues of quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrices correspondin…
Suppose $X$ and $Y$ are $p\times n$ matrices each with mean $0$, variance $1$ and where all moments of any order are uniformly bounded as $p,n \to \infty$. Moreover, the entries $(X_{ij}, Y_{ij})$ are independent across $i,j$ with a common correlation $ρ$. Let $C=n^{-1}XY^*$ be the sample cross-covariance matrix. We show that if $n, p\to \infty, p/n\to y\neq 0$, then $C$ converges in the algebraic sense and the limit moments depend only on $ρ$. Independent copies of such matrices with same $p$ but different $n$, say $\{n_l\}$, different correlations $\{ρ_l\}$, and different non-zero $y$'s, say…
Consider a sample of a centered random vector with unit covariance matrix. We show that under certain regularity assumptions, and up to a natural scaling, the smallest and the largest eigenvalues of the empirical covariance matrix converge, when the dimension and the sample size both tend to infinity, to the left and right edges of the Marchenko--Pastur distribution. The assumptions are related to tails of norms of orthogonal projections. They cover isotropic log-concave random vectors as well as random vectors with i.i.d. coordinates with almost optimal moment conditions. The method is a refi…
