We study the problem of the optimal mixing of a passive scalar under the action of an incompressible flow in two space dimensions. The scalar solves the continuity equation with a divergence-free velocity field, which satisfies a bound in the Sobolev space $W^{s,p}$, where $s \geq 0$ and $1\leq p\leq \infty$. The mixing properties are given in terms of a characteristic length scale, called the mixing scale. We consider two notions of mixing scale, one functional, expressed in terms of the homogeneous Sobolev norm $\dot H^{-1}$, the other geometric, related to rearrangements of sets. We study rates of decay in time of both scales under self-similar mixing. For the case $s=1$ and $1 \leq p \leq \infty$ (including the case of Lipschitz continuous velocities, and the case of physical interest of enstrophy-constrained flows), we present examples of velocity fields and initial configurations for the scalar that saturate the exponential lower bound, established in previous works, on the time decay of both scales. We also present several consequences for the geometry of regular Lagrangian flows associated to Sobolev velocity fields.
We consider the questions of efficient mixing and un-mixing by incompressible flows which satisfy periodic, no-flow, or no-slip boundary conditions on a square. Under the uniform-in-time constraint $\|\nabla u(\cdot,t)\|_p\leq 1$ we show that any function can be mixed to scale $ε$ in time $O(|\logε|^{1+ν_p})$, with $ν_p=0$ for $p<\tfrac{3+\sqrt 5}2$ and $ν_p\leq \tfrac 13$ for $p\geq \tfrac{3+\sqrt 5}2$. Known lower bounds show that this rate is optimal for $p\in(1,\tfrac{3+\sqrt 5}2)$. We also show that any set which is mixed to scale $ε$ but not much more than that can be un-mixed to a recta…
The inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with fractional Laplacian dissipations in the multi-dimensional whole space are considered. The existence and uniqueness of global strong solution with vacuum are established for large initial data. The exponential decay-in-time of the strong solution is also obtained, which is different from the homogeneous case. The initial density may have vacuum and even compact support.
Global well-posedness and exponential decay of strong solution for the three-dimensional inhomogeneous incompressible micropolar equations with density-dependent transport coefficients and large initial data
Well-posedness and exponential stability of the inhomogeneous anisotropic incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with far-field vacuum in two-dimensional whole space
We construct an initial data for two-dimensional Euler equation in a disk for which the gradient of vorticity exhibits double exponential growth in time for all times. This estimate is known to be sharp - the double exponential growth is the fastest possible growth rate.
In this paper, we consider a layer of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid interacting with the magnetic filed in a horizontally periodic setting. The upper boundary bounded by a free boundary and below bounded by a flat rigid interface. We prove the global well-posedness of the problem for both the case with and without surface tension. Moreover, we show that the global solution decays to the equilibrium exponentially in the case with surface tension, however the global solution decays to the equilibrium at an almost exponential rate in the case without surface tension.
We prove a Beale-Kato-Majda type criterion for the loss of regularity for solutions of the incompressible Euler equations in $H^{s}({\mathbb R}^3)$, for $s>\frac52$. Instead of double exponential estimates of Beale-Kato-Majda type, we obtain a single exponential bound on $\|u(t)\|_{H^s}$ involving the length parameter introduced by P. Constantin in \cite{co1}. In particular, we derive lower bounds on the blowup rate of such solutions.
We construct an initial data for the two-dimensional Euler equation in a bounded smooth symmetric domain such that the gradient of vorticity in $L^{\infty}$ grows as a double exponential in time for all time. Our construction is based on the recent result by Kiselev and Šverák.
In this work we extend the results in [6,32] on the 2D IPM system with constant viscosity (Atwood number $A_μ=0$) to the case of viscosity jump ($|A_μ|<1$). We prove a h-principle whereby (infinitely many) weak solutions in $C_tL_{w^*}^{\infty}$ are recovered via convex integration whenever a subsolution is provided. As a first example, non-trivial weak solutions with compact support in time are obtained. Secondly, we construct mixing solutions to the unstable Muskat problem with initial flat interface. As a byproduct, we check that the connection, established by Székelyhidi for $A_μ=0$, betwe…
We study the mixing properties of a passive scalar advected by an incompressible flow. We consider a class of cellular flows (more general than the class in [Crippa-Schulze M3AS 2017]) and show that, under the constraint that the palenstrophy is bounded uniformly in time, the mixing scale of the passive scalar cannot decay exponentially.
We study the stability of a type of stratified flows of the two dimensional inviscid incompressible MHD equations with velocity damping. The exponential stability for the perturbation near certain stratified flow is investigated in a strip-type area R*[0,1]. Although the magnetic filed potential is governed by a transport equation, by using the algebraic structure of the incompressible condition, it turns out that the linearized MHD equations around the given stratified flow retain a non-local damping mechanism. After carefully analyzing the non-linear structure and introducing some suitable w…
We prove the existence of mixing solutions of the incompressible porous media equation for all Muskat type $H^5$ initial data in the fully unstable regime. The proof combines convex integration, contour dynamics and a basic calculus for non smooth semiclassical type pseudodifferential operators which is developed.
Consider a diffusion-free passive scalar $θ$ being mixed by an incompressible flow $u$ on the torus $\mathbb{T}^d$. Our aim is to study how well this scalar can be mixed under an enstrophy constraint on the advecting velocity field. Our main result shows that the mix-norm ($||θ(t)||_{H^{-1}}$) is bounded below by an exponential function of time. The exponential decay rate we obtain is not universal and depends on the size of the support of the initial data. We also perform numerical simulations and confirm that the numerically observed decay rate scales similarly to the rigorous lower bound, at…
We show how gradient estimates for transition semigroups can be used to establish exponential mixing for a class of Markov processes in infinite dimensions. We concentrate on semilinear systems driven by cylindrical $α$-stable noises, $α\in (0,2)$, introduced in Priola-Zabczyk "Structural properties of semilinear SPDEs driven by cylindrical stable processes" (PTRF to appear). We first prove that if the nonlinearity is bounded, then the system is ergodic and strong mixing. Then we show that the system is exponentially mixing provided that the nonlinearity, or its Lipschitz constant, are suffici…
In this paper, we first present a Gearhardt-Prüss type theorem with a sharp bound for m-accretive operators. Then we give two applications: (1) give a simple proof of the result proved by Constantin et al. on relaxation enhancement induced by incompressible flows; (2) show that shear flows with a class of Weierstrass functions obey logarithmically fast dissipation time-scales.
This paper concerns the dynamics of a layer of incompressible viscous fluid lying above a rigid plane and with an upper boundary given by a free surface. The fluid is subject to a constant external force with a horizontal component, which arises in modeling the motion of such a fluid down an inclined plane, after a coordinate change. We consider the problem both with and without surface tension for horizontally periodic flows. This problem gives rise to shear-flow equilibrium solutions, and the main thrust of this paper is to study the asymptotic stability of the equilibria in certain paramete…
We study the uniqueness, the continuity in $L^2$ and the large time decay for the Leray solutions of the $3D$ incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with nonlinear exponential damping term $a (e^{b |u|^{\bf 4}}-1)u$, ($a,b>0$).
We are concerned with large-time behaviors of solutions for Vlasov--Navier--Stokes equations in two dimensions and Vlasov-Stokes system in three dimensions including the effect of velocity alignment/misalignment. We first revisit the large-time behavior estimate for our main system and refine assumptions on the dimensions and a communication weight function. In particular, this allows us to take into account the effect of the misalignment interactions between particles. We then use a sharp heat kernel estimate to obtain the exponential time decay of fluid velocity to its average in $L^\infty$-…
The paper is devoted to studying the stochastic nonlinear wave (NLW) equation in a bounded domain D $\subset$ R3. We show that the Markov process associated with the flow of solution has a unique stationary measure $μ$, and the law of any solution converges to $μ$ with exponential rate in the dual-Lipschitz norm
We prove a version of Bressan's mixing conjecture where the advecting field is constrained to be a shear at each time. Also, inspired by recent work of Blumenthal, Coti Zelati and Gvalani, we construct a particularly simple example of a shear flow which mixes at the optimal rate. The constructed vector field alternates randomly in time between just two distinct shears.
We consider the mixing behaviour of the solutions of the continuity equation associated with a divergence-free velocity field. In this announcement we sketch two explicit examples of exponential decay of the mixing scale of the solution, in case of Sobolev velocity fields, thus showing the optimality of known lower bounds. We also describe how to use such examples to construct solutions to the continuity equation with Sobolev but non-Lipschitz velocity field exhibiting instantaneous loss of any fractional Sobolev regularity.
We study a diffuse interface model for the flow of two viscous incompressible Newtonian fluids in a bounded domain. The fluids are assumed to be macroscopically immiscible, but a partial mixing in a small interfacial region is assumed in the model. Moreover, diffusion of both components is taken into account. In contrast to previous works, we study a model for the general case that the fluids have different densities due to Lowengrub and Truskinovski. This leads to an inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes system coupled to a Cahn-Hilliard system, where the density of the mixture depends on the concentra…
Consider a free boundary problem of compressible-incompressible two-phase flows with surface tension and phase transition in bounded domains $Ω_{t +}, Ω_{t -} \subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N \ge 2$, where the domains are separated by a sharp compact interface $Γ_t \subset \mathbb{R}^{N - 1}$. We prove a global in time unique existence theorem for such free boundary problem under the assumption that the initial data are sufficiently small and the initial domain of the incompressible fluid is close to a ball. In particular, we obtain the solution in the maximal $L_p - L_q$-regularity class with $2 < p…
We construct mixing solutions to the incompressible porous media equation starting from Muskat type data in the partially unstable regime. In particular, we consider bubble and turned type interfaces with Sobolev regularity. As a by-product, we prove the continuation of the evolution of IPM after the Rayleigh-Taylor and smoothness breakdown exhibited in [18,17]. At each time slice the space is split into three evolving domains: two non-mixing zones and a mixing zone which is localized in a neighborhood of the unstable region. In this way, we show the compatibility between the classical Muskat …
We address the system of partial differential equations modeling motion of an elastic body interacting with an incompressible fluid. The fluid is modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations while the structure is represented by a damped wave equation $w_{tt}-Δw + αw_t =0$, where $α>0$. We prove the global existence and exponential decay of strong solutions for small initial data in a suitable Sobolev space. We show that the elastic velocity $w_t$ and the acceleration $w_{tt}$ can be controlled by the $H^2$ elliptic estimates and by the dissipation of the fluid via the free interface.…
For any $A > 2$, we construct solutions to the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ whose vorticity gradient $\nablaω$ grows exponentially in time: $$\|\nablaω(t, \cdot)\|_{L^\infty} \gtrsim e^{At},\quad \forall\ t \geq 0.$$
We study the uniqueness, the continuity in $L^2$ and the large time decay for the Leray solutions of the $3D$ incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the nonlinear exponential damping term $a (e^{b |u|^{\bf 2}}-1)u$, ($a,b>0$) studied by the second author in \cite{J1}.
This paper concerns with the stability of the plane Couette flow resulted from the motions of boundaries that the top boundary $Σ_1$ and the bottom one $Σ_0$ move with constant velocities $(a,0)$ and $(b,0)$, respectively. If one imposes Dirichlet boundary condition on the top boundary and Navier boundary condition on the bottom boundary with Navier coefficient $α$, there always exists a plane Couette flow which is exponentially stable for nonnegative $α$ and any positive viscosity $μ$ and any $a, b \in \mathbb{R}$, or, for $α<0$ but viscosity $μ$ and the moving velocities of boundaries $(a,0)…
In a plane polygon $P$ with straight sides, we prove analytic regularity of the Leray-Hopf solution of the stationary, viscous, and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We assume small data, analytic volume force and no-slip boundary conditions. Analytic regularity is quantified in so-called countably normed, corner-weighted spaces with homogeneous norms. Implications of this analytic regularity include exponential smallness of Kolmogorov $N$-widths of solutions, exponential convergence rates of mixed $hp$-discontinuous Galerkin finite element and spectral element discretizations and of mod…
In this paper, we study exponentially fast mixing induced/enhanced by gravity and stochastic boundary in the kinetic theory of Vlasov equations. We consider the Vlasov equations with and without a vertical magnetic field inside a horizontally-periodic 3D half-space equipped with a non-isothermal diffusive reflection boundary condition of bounded continuous boundary temperature at the bottom. We construct both stationary solutions and global-in-time dynamical solutions in $L^\infty$. We prove that moments of a dynamical fluctuation around the steady solutions decay exponentially fast in $L^\inf…
We study an infinite white $α$-stable systems with unbounded interactions, proving the existence by Galerkin approximation and exponential mixing property by an $α$-stable version of gradient bounds.
We prove the strong Feller property and exponential mixing for 3D stochastic Navier-Stokes equation driven by mildly degenerate noises (i.e. all but finitely many Fourier modes are forced) via Kolmogorov equation approach.
We study the Boltzmann equation on the $d$-dimensional torus in a perturbative setting around a global equilibrium under the Navier-Stokes linearisation. We use a recent functional analysis breakthrough to prove that the linear part of the equation generates a $C^0$-semigroup with exponential decay in Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces with polynomial weight, independently on the Knudsen number. Finally we show a Cauchy theory and an exponential decay for the perturbed Boltzmann equation, uniformly in the Knudsen number, in Sobolev spaces with polynomial weight. The polynomial weight is almost optima…
We prove that well posed quasilinear equations of parabolic type, perturbed by bounded nondegenerate random forces, are exponentially mixing for a large class of random forces.
We performed a numerical study of the efficiency of mixing by alternating horizontal and vertical shear ``wedge'' flows on the two-dimensional torus. Our results suggest that except in cases where each individual flow is applied for only a short time, these flows produce exponentially fast mixing. The observed mixing rates are higher when the individual flow times are shorter (but not too short), and randomizing either the flow times or phase shifts of the flows does not appear to enhance mixing (again when the flow times are not too short). In fact, the latter surprisingly seems to inhibit it…
We consider the question of exponential mixing for random dynamical systems on arbitrary compact manifolds without boundary. We put forward a robust, dynamics-based framework that allows us to construct space-time smooth, uniformly bounded in time, universal exponential mixers. The framework is then applied to the problem of proving exponential mixing in a classical example proposed by Pierrehumbert in 1994, consisting of alternating periodic shear flows with randomized phases. This settles a longstanding open problem on proving the existence of a space-time smooth (universal) exponentially mi…
We consider mixing by incompressible flows. In 2003, Bressan stated a conjecture concerning a bound on the mixing achieved by the flow in terms of an $L^1$ norm of the velocity field. Existing results in the literature use an $L^p$ norm with $p>1$. In this paper we introduce a new approach to prove such results. It recovers most of the existing results and offers new perpective on the problem. Our approach makes use of a recent harmonic analysis estimate from Seeger, Smart and Street.
In fluid mechanics, a lot of authors have been executing their researches to obtain the analytical solutions of Navier-Stokes equations, even for 3D case of compressible gas flow or 3D case of non-stationary flow of incompressible fluid. But there is an essential deficiency of non-stationary solutions indeed. We explore the ansatz of derivation of non-stationary solution for the Navier-Stokes equations in the case of incompressible flow, which was suggested earlier. In general case, such a solution should be obtained from the mixed system of 2 Riccati ordinary differential equations (in regard…
We study the mixing and dissipation properties of the advection-diffusion equation with diffusivity $0 < κ\ll 1$ and advection by a class of random velocity fields on $\mathbb T^d$, $d=\{2,3\}$, including solutions of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations forced by sufficiently regular-in-space, non-degenerate white-in-time noise. We prove that the solution almost surely mixes exponentially fast uniformly in the diffusivity $κ$. Namely, that there is a deterministic, exponential rate (independent of $κ$) such that all mean-zero $H^1$ initial data decays exponentially fast in $H^{-1}$ at this rate wit…
