In 2000 Iwaniec, Luo, and Sarnak proved for certain families of $L$-functions associated to holomorphic newforms of square-free level that, under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, as the conductors tend to infinity the one-level density of their zeros matches the one-level density of eigenvalues of large random matrices from certain classical compact groups in the appropriate scaling limit. We remove the square-free restriction by obtaining a trace formula for arbitrary level by using a basis developed by Blomer and Milićević, which is of use for other problems as well.
We compute the quantum variance of holomorphic cusp forms on the vertical geodesic for smooth, compactly supported test functions. The variance is related to an averaged shifted-convolution problem that we evaluate asymptotically. We encounter an off-diagonal term that matches exactly with a certain diagonal term, a feature reminiscent of moments of $L$-functions.
We find the average value of the $L^4$-norm of holomorphic Hecke cusp forms of weight within a dyadic interval, up to an error which saves a power of the weight.
Based on the theory of $L$-series associated with weakly holomorphic modular forms in \cite{DLRR}, we derive explicit formulas for central values of derivatives of $L$-series as integrals with limits inside the upper half-plane. This has computational advantages, already in the case of classical holomorphic cusp forms and, in the last section, we discuss computational aspects and explicit examples.
We derive an explicit formula for the trace of an arbitrary Hecke operator on spaces of twist-minimal holomorphic cusp forms with arbitrary level and character, and weight at least 2. We show that this formula provides an efficient way of computing basis elements for newform or cusp form spaces. This work was motivated by the development of a twist-minimal trace formula in the non-holomorphic case by Booker, Lee and Strömbergsson, as well as the presentation of a fully generalised trace formula for the holomorphic case by Cohen and Strömberg.
Let $f$ be a normalized holomorphic cusp form with a square-free level $N$ and weight $k$. Using a pre-trace formula, we establish a sup-norm bound of $f$ such that $\|y^kf(z)\|_{\infty} \ll N^{-1/6+ε}$ where the trivial bound is $\|y^kf(z)\|_{\infty} \ll 1$. This result is an analog of a similar bound in Maaß form case.
New uniform asymptotic formulas are obtained for the second moment of $L$-series of cusp forms of even weight $2k\ge2$ with respect to the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N).$
This note is concerned with the zeros of holomorphic Hecke cusp forms of large weight on the modular surface. The zeros of such forms are symmetric about three geodesic segments and we call those zeros that lie on these segments, real. Our main results give estimates for the number of real zeros as the weight goes to infinity.
We prove that the fourth moment of holomorphic Hecke cusp forms is bounded provided that the Riemann Hypothesis holds for an appropriate degree 8 L-function. We accomplish this using Watson's formula, which translates the question in hand into a moment problem for L-functions which is amenable to the techniques of Soundararajan and Harper on obtaining sharp bounds for moments of the Riemann zeta function.
In this work we prove a prime number type theorem involving the normalised Fourier coefficients of holomorphic and Maass cusp forms, using the classical circle method. A key point is in a recent paper of Fouvry and Ganguly, based on Hoffstein-Ramakrishnan's result about the non-existence of the Siegel zeros for $GL(2)$ $L$-functions, which allows us to improve preceding estimates.
We prove equidistribution theorems for a family of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms of general degree in the level aspect. Our main contribution is to estimate unipotent contributions for general degree in the geometric side of Arthur's invariant trace formula in terms of Shintani zeta functions. Several applications including the vertical Sato-Tate theorem and low-lying zeros for standard $L$-functions of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms are discussed. We also show that the "non-genuine forms" which come from non-trivial endoscopic contributions by Langlands functoriality classified by Arthur are n…
We prove an upper bound for the L^4-norm and for the L^2-norm restricted to the vertical geodesic of a holomorphic Hecke cusp form of large weight. The method is based on Watson's formula and estimating a mean value of certain L-functions of degree 6. Further applications to restriction problems of Siegel modular forms and subconvexity bounds of degree 8 L-functions are given.
We study nearly holomorphic Siegel Eisenstein series of general levels and characters on $\mathbb{H}_{2n}$, the Siegel upper half space of degree $2n$. We prove that the Fourier coefficients of these Eisenstein series (once suitably normalized) lie in the ring of integers of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for all sufficiently large primes $p$. We also prove that the pullbacks of these Eisenstein series to $\mathbb{H}_n \times \mathbb{H}_n$ are cuspidal under certain assumptions.
Given a maximal even-integral lattice $\cL$ of signature $(m+, 2-)$ with an odd $m\geq 3$, we consider the holomorphic cusp forms $F$ of weight $l$ on the bounded symmetric domain of type IV of dimension $m$ with respect to the discriminant subgroup of the orthogonal group $O(\cL)$ defined by $\cL$. Under a non-negativity assumption on the central $L$-values, we prove an equidistribution result of Satake parameters in an ensemble constructed from the central values of standard $L$-functions and the square of the Whittaker-Bessel periods.
We obtain a generalisation of the Quantum Unique Ergodicity for holomorphic cusp forms on $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}) \backslash \mathbb{H}$ in the weight aspect. We show that correlations of masses coming from off-diagonal terms dissipate as the weight tends to infinity. This corresponds to classifying the possible quantum limits along any sequence of Hecke eigenforms of increasing weight. Our new ingredient is to incorporate the spectral theory of weight $k$ automorphic functions to the method of Holowinsky-Soundararajan. For Holowinsky's shifted convolution sums approach, we need to develop …
We prove `polynomial in $k$' bounds on the size of the Bergman kernel for the space of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms of degree $n$ and weight $k$. When $n=1,2$ our bounds agree with the conjectural bounds on the aforementioned size, while the lower bounds match for all $n \ge 1$. For an $L^2$-normalised Siegel cusp form $F$ of degree $2$, our bound for its sup-norm is $O_ε(k^{9/4+ε})$. Further, we show that in any compact set $Ω$ (which does not depend on $k$) contained in the Siegel fundamental domain of $\mathrm{Sp}(2, \mathbb Z)$ on the Siegel upper half space, the sup-norm of $F$ is $O_Ω(k…
Let $Γ$ be the Fuchsian group of the first kind. For an even integer $m\ge 4$, we study $m/2$-holomorphic differentials in terms of space of (holomorphic) cuspidal modular forms $S_m(Γ)$. We also give in depth study of Wronskians of cuspidal modular forms and their divisors.
In this paper we determine the limiting distribution of the image of the Eichler--Shimura map or equivalently the limiting joint distribution of the coefficients of the period polynomials associated to a fixed cusp form. The limiting distribution is shown to be the distribution of a certain transformation of two independent random variables both of which are equidistributed on the circle $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$, where the transformation is connected to the additive twist of the cuspidal $L$-function. Furthermore we determine the asymptotic behavior of the zeroes of the period polynomials of a …
We define canonical real analytic versions of modular forms of integral weight for the full modular group, generalising real analytic Eisenstein series. They are harmonic Maass waveforms with poles at the cusp, whose Fourier coefficients involve periods and quasi-periods of cusp forms, which are conjecturally transcendental. In particular, we settle the question of finding explicit `weak harmonic lifts' for every eigenform of integral weight $k$ and level one. We show that mock modular forms of integral weight are algebro-geometric and have Fourier coefficients proportional to $n^{1-k}(a'_n + …
The summatory function of $t_j(n^2)$ is estimated, where $H_j(s) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty t_j(n)n^{-s}$ is the Hecke series of a non-holomorphic cusp form. The analogous problem of holomorphic cusp forms is also treated.
We study low-lying zeros of $L$-functions attached to holomorphic cusp forms of level $1$ and large weight. In this family, the Katz--Sarnak heuristic with orthogonal symmetry type was established in the work of Iwaniec, Luo and Sarnak for test functions $ϕ$ satisfying the condition supp$(\widehat ϕ) \subset(-2,2)$. We refine their density result by uncovering lower-order terms that exhibit a sharp transition when the support of $\widehat ϕ$ reaches the point $1$. In particular the first of these terms involves the quantity $\widehat ϕ(1)$ which appeared in previous work of Fouvry--Iwaniec and…
Let $f$ be a cuspidal Hecke eigenform of level 1. We prove the automorphy of the symmetric power lifting $\mathrm{Sym}^n f$ for every $n \geq 1$. We establish the same result for a more general class of cuspidal Hecke eigenforms, including all those associated to semistable elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$.
We study sums of additively twisted Fourier coefficients of a holomorphic cusp form, a Maass cusp form, and the symmetric-square lift of a holomorphic cusp form. We obtain bounds that are uniform with respect to both the form and the terms of the additive twist. We also improve a bound on a sum of additively twisted Fourier coefficients of a holomorphic cusp form that have also been twisted by a nonlinear exponential term. This last bound is uniform with respect to the terms of the additive twist but it is not uniform with respect to the form.
Several authors have recently proved results which express cusp forms as $p$-adic limits of weakly holomorphic modular forms under repeated application of Atkin's $U$-operator. The proofs involve techniques from the theory of weak harmonic Maass forms, and in particular a result of Guerzhoy, Kent, and Ono on the $p$-adic coupling of mock modular forms and their shadows. Here we obtain strengthened versions of these results using techniques from the theory of holomorphic modular forms.
We study the second moment of the L-function associated to a holomorphic primitive cusp form of even weight perturbed by a new family of mollifiers. This family is a natural extension of the mollifers considered by Conrey and by Bui, Conrey and Young. As an application, we improve the current lower bound on critical zeros of holomorphic primitive cusp forms.
Let $f$ be a Hecke cusp form of weight $k$ for the full modular group, and let $\{λ_f(n)\}_{n\geq 1}$ be the sequence of its normalized Fourier coefficients. Motivated by the problem of the first sign change of $λ_f(n)$, we investigate the range of $x$ (in terms of $k$) for which there are cancellations in the sum $S_f(x)=\sum_{n\leq x} λ_f(n)$. We first show that $S_f(x)=o(x\log x)$ implies that $λ_f(n)<0$ for some $n\leq x$. We also prove that $S_f(x)=o(x\log x)$ in the range $\log x/\log\log k\to \infty$ assuming the Riemann hypothesis for $L(s, f)$, and furthermore that this range is best …
In this paper we give a new proof of the Quantum Unique Ergodicity conjecture for holomorphic integral weight modular forms on the upper half plane. The proof requires only partial results towards the Ramanujan conjecture and the shifted convolution problem. Furthermore the proof is applicable to a wider class of cusp forms other than Hecke eigenforms. We also prove some interesting corollaries, particularly towards the Lehmer's conjecture on the non vanishing of the Fourier coefficients.
A holomorphic discrete series representation $(L_π,H_π)$ of a connected semi-simple real Lie group $G$ is associated with an irreducible representation $(π,V_π)$ of its maximal compact subgroup $K$. The underlying space $H_π$ can be realized as certain holomorphic $V_π$-valued functions on the bounded symmetric domain $\mathcal{D}\cong G/K$. By the Berezin quantization, we transfer $B(H_π)$ into End$(V_π)$-valued functions on $\mathcal{D}$. For a lattice $Γ$ of $G$, we give the formula of a faithful normal tracial state on the commutant $L_π(Γ)'$ of the group von Neumann algebra $L_π(Γ)''$. We…
Explicit bases for the spaces of holomorphic cusp forms of all even positive weights and all orders are constructed. The dimensions of these spaces are computed.
Let $\frak T_2$ (resp. $\mathfrak{T}$) be the Hermitian symmetric domain of $Spin(2,10)$ (resp. $E_{7,3}$). In the previous work, we constructed holomorphic cusp forms on $\mathfrak{T}$ from elliptic cusp forms with respect to $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. By using such cusp forms we construct holomorphic cusp forms on $\mathfrak{T}_2$ which are similar to Miyawaki lift in symplectic groups established by T. Ikeda.
We prove an equidistribution theorem for a family of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms for $GSp_4/\mathbb{Q}$ in various aspects. A main tool is Arthur's invariant trace formula. While Shin and Shin-Templier used Euler-Poincaré functions at infinity in the formula, we use a pseudo-coefficient of a holomorphic discrete series to extract holomorphic Siegel cusp forms. Then the non-semisimple contributions arise from the geometric side, and this provides new second main terms $A, B_1$ in the main theorem which have not been studied and a mysterious second term $B_2$ also appears in the second main te…
In this paper we deal with a new class of Clifford algebra valued automorphic forms on arithmetic subgroups of the Ahlfors-Vahlen group. The forms that we consider are in the kernel of the operator $D Δ^{k/2}$ for some even $k \in {\mathbb{Z}}$. They will be called $k$-holomorphic Cliffordian automorphic forms. $k$-holomorphic Cliffordian functions are well equipped with many function theoretical tools. Furthermore, the real component functions have also the property that they are solutions to the homogeneous and inhomogeneous Weinstein equation. This function class includes the set of $k$-hyp…
We obtain upper bounds for the fourth and higher moments of short exponential sums involving Fourier coefficients of holomorphic cusp forms twisted by rational additive twists with small denominators.
Serre proved that any holomorphic cusp form of weight one for $Γ_1(N)$ is lacunary while a holomorphic modular form for $Γ_1(N)$ of higher integer weight is lacunary if and only if it is a linear combination of cusp forms of CM-type (see Serre, subsections 7.6 and 7.7). In this paper, we show that when a non-zero modular function of arbitrary real weight for any finite index subgroup of the modular group ${\SL}_2(\Z)$ is lacunary, it is necessarily holomorphic on the upper-half plane, finite at the cusps and has non-negative weight.
Eichler and Zagier developed a theory of Jacobi forms to understand and extend Maass' work on the Saito-Kurokawa conjecture. Later Skoruppa introduced skew-holomorphic Jacobi forms, which play an important role in understanding liftings of modular forms and Jacobi forms. In this paper, we explain a relation between holomorphic Jacobi forms and skew-holomorphic Jacobi forms in terms of a group cohomology. More precisely, we introduce an isomorphism from the direct sum of the space of Jacobi cusp forms on $Γ^J$ and the space of skew-holomorphic Jacobi cusp forms on $Γ^J$ with the same half-integ…
This is a survey of results on the construction of holomorphic cusp forms on tube domains originally initiated by Ikeda. Besides a survey it includes conjectures and possible applications of our work.
A new upper bound is given for the dimension of the space of holomorphic cusp forms of weight one and prime level $q$: $$ \hbox{dim}\, S_1(q) << q^{11/12} \log^4{q} $$ with an absolute implied constant.
We show that the image of repeated differentiation on weak cusp forms is precisely the subspace which is orthogonal to the space of weakly holomorphic modular forms. This gives a new interpretation of the weakly holomorphic Hecke eigenforms.
Ahlgren and Samart relate three cusp forms with complex multiplication to certain weakly holomorphic modular forms using $p$-adic bounds related to their Fourier coefficients. In these three examples, their result strengthens a theorem of Guerzhoy, Kent, and Ono which pairs certain CM forms with weakly holomorphic modular forms via $p$-adic limits. Ahlgren and Samart use only the theory of modular forms and Hecke operators, whereas Guerzhoy, Kent, and Ono use the theory of harmonic Maass forms. Here we extend Ahlgren and Samart's work to all cases where the cusp form space is one-dimensional a…
Additive twists are important invariants associated to holomorphic cusp forms; they encode the Eichler--Shimura isomorphism and contain information about automorphic $L$-functions. In this paper we prove that central values of additive twists of the $L$-function associated to a holomorphic cusp form $f$ of even weight $k$ are asymptotically normally distributed. This generalizes (to $k\geq 4$) a recent breakthrough of Petridis and Risager concerning the arithmetic distribution of modular symbols. Furthermore we give as an application an asymptotic formula for the averages of certain 'wide' fam…
We continue the analysis of modular invariant functions, subject to inhomogeneous Laplace eigenvalue equations, that were determined in terms of Poincaré series in a companion paper. The source term of the Laplace equation is a product of (derivatives of) two non-holomorphic Eisenstein series whence the modular invariants are assigned depth two. These modular invariant functions can sometimes be expressed in terms of single-valued iterated integrals of holomorphic Eisenstein series as they appear in generating series of modular graph forms. We show that the set of iterated integrals of Eisenst…
We study certain types of Fuchsian groups of the first kind denoted by $R(N)$, which coincide with the Fricke groups or the arithmetic Hecke triangle groups of low levels. We find all elliptic points and cusps of $R(p)$ for a prime $p$, and prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the set of equivalence classes of elliptic points of $R(p)$ and the imaginary quadratic class group. We also find the explicit formula of the Fourier expansion of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series for $R(N)$ and study their analytic properties. These non-holomorphic Eisenstein series together with …
We present a dimension formula for spaces of vector-valued modular forms of integer weight in case the associated multiplier system has finite image, and discuss the weight distribution of the module generators of holomorphic and cusp forms, as well as the duality relation between cusp forms and holomorphic forms for the contragredient.
We prove an explicit integral representation -- involving the pullback of a suitable Siegel Eisenstein series -- for the twisted standard $L$-function associated to a holomorphic vector-valued Siegel cusp form of degree $n$ and arbitrary level. In contrast to all previously proved pullback formulas in this situation, our formula involves only scalar-valued functions despite being applicable to $L$-functions of vector-valued Siegel cusp forms. The key new ingredient in our method is a novel choice of local vectors at the archimedean place which allows us to exactly compute the archimedean local…
In this paper, we investigate cycle integrals of weakly holomorphic modular forms. We show that these integrals coincide with the cycle integrals of classical cusp forms. We use these results to define a Shintani lift from integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms to half-integral weight holomorphic modular forms.
In this article, we prove non-vanishing results for $L$-functions associated to holomorphic cusp forms of half-integral weight on average (over an orthogonal basis of Hecke eigenforms). This extends a result of W. Kohnen to forms of half-integral weight.
In this paper, we investigate the "angular changes" behavior of some subfamilies of Fourier coefficients of both integral and half-integral weight holomorphic cusp forms, thus one gets information about signs of the real an imaginary parts of these subfamilies. These give an extension of some recent results of Kohnen and his collaborators.

We prove Zagier duality between the Fourier coefficients of canonical bases for spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of prime level $p$ with $11 \leq p \leq 37$ with poles only at the cusp at $\infty$, and special cases of duality for an infinite class of prime levels. We derive generating functions for the bases for genus 1 levels.
Let $f$ be a holomorphic cusp form of weight $k$ with respect to full modular group $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ satisfying a normalized Hecke eigenform, $L_f(s)$ the $L$-function attached to the form $f$. Good gave the approximate functional equation and mean square formula of $L_f(s)$. In this paper, we shall generalize these formulas for the derivatives of $L_f(s)$.
