We study the GIT compactifications of pairs formed by a hypersurface and a hyperplane. We provide a general setting to characterize all polarizations which give rise to different GIT quotients. Furthermore, we describe a finite set of one-parameter subgroups sufficient to determine the stability of any GIT quotient. We characterize all maximal orbits of non stable and strictly semistable pairs, as well as minimal closed orbits of strictly semistable pairs. Our construction gives natural compactifications of the space of log smooth pairs for Fano and Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces.
In this paper, we study quotients of groupoids and coarse moduli spaces of stacks in a general setting. Geometric quotients are not always categorical, but we present a natural topological condition under which a geometric quotient is categorical. We also show the existence of geometric quotients of finite flat groupoids and give explicit local descriptions. Exploiting similar methods, we give an easy proof of the existence of quotients of flat groupoids with finite stabilizers. As the proofs do not use noetherian methods and are valid for general algebraic spaces and algebraic stacks, we obta…
We provide a geometric approach to constructing Lefschetz collections and Landau-Ginzburg Homological Projective Duals from a variation of Geometric Invariant Theory quotients. This approach yields homological projective duals for Veronese embeddings in the setting of Landau Ginzburg models. Our results also extend to a relative Homological Projective Duality framework.
For a complex variety $\hat X$ with an action of a reductive group $\hat G$ and a geometric quotient $π: \hat X \to X$ by a closed normal subgroup $H \subset \hat G$, we show that open sets of $X$ admitting good quotients by $G=\hat G / H$ correspond bijectively to open sets in $\hat X$ with good $\hat G$-quotients. We use this to compute GIT-chambers and their associated quotients for the diagonal action of $\text{PGL}_2$ on $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ in certain subcones of the $\text{PGL}_2$-effective cone via a torus action on affine space. This allows us to represent these quotients as toric varie…
We prove that the Leray spectral sequence in rational cohomology for the quotient map $U_{n,d} \to U_{n,d}/G$ where $U_{n,d}$ is the affine variety of equations for smooth hypersurfaces of degree $d$ in $\PP^n(\C)$ and $G$ is the general linear group, degenerates at $E_2$.
Fix a scheme $X$ over a field of characteristic zero that is equipped with an action of a reductive algebraic group $G$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a $G$-equivariant coherent sheaf on $X$ or a bounded-above complex of $G$-equivariant coherent sheaves on $X$ to descend to a good quotient $X//G$. This gives a description of the coherent derived category of $X//G$ as an admissible subcategory of the equivariant derived category of $X$.
It was proved by the first-named author and Zubkov [13] that given an affine algebraic supergroup $\mathbb{G}$ and a closed sub-supergroup $\mathbb{H}$ over an arbitrary field of characteristic $\ne 2$, the faisceau $\mathbb{G} \tilde{/} \mathbb{H}$ (in the fppf topology) is a superscheme, and is, therefore, the quotient superscheme $\mathbb{G}/\mathbb{H}$, which has desirable properties, in fact. We reprove this, by constructing directly the latter superscheme $\mathbb{G}/\mathbb{H}$. Our proof describes explicitly the structure sheaf of $\mathbb{G}/\mathbb{H}$, and reveals some new geometric…
We study a variation of Mumford's quotient for the action of a maximal torus $T$ on a flag variety $G/B$ depending on projective embedding $G/B \hookrightarrow \Bbb P(V(χ))$, where $T$-linearization is induced by the standard $G$-linearization. We describe the linear spans of the supports of semistable orbits, that allow us to calculate the rank of the Picard group of quotient $(G/B)^{ss}//T$, when $G$ does not contain simple factors of type $A_n$.
A 3-fold terminal quotient singularity X=C^3/G admits the economic resolution Y-> X, which is "close to being crepant". This paper proves that the economic resolution Y is isomorphic to a distinguished component of a moduli space of certain G-equivariant objects using the the King stability condition $θ$ introduced by Kędzierski.
Let $M$ be an irreducible smooth projective variety, defined over an algebraically closed field, equipped with an action of a connected reductive affine algebraic group $G$, and let ${\mathcal L}$ be a $G$--equivariant very ample line bundle on $M$. Assume that the GIT quotient $M/\!\!/G$ is a nonempty set. We prove that the homomorphism of algebraic fundamental groups $π_1(M)\, \longrightarrow\, π_1(M/\!\!/G)$, induced by the rational map $M\, \longrightarrow\, M/\!\!/G$, is an isomorphism. If $k\,=\, \mathbb C$, then we show that the above rational map $M\, \longrightarrow \, M/\!\!/G$ induc…
We give another proof that a reductive algebraic group is geometrically reductive. We show that a quotient of the semi-stable locus (by a linear action of a reductive algebraic group on a projective scheme) exists, and from this Haboush's Theorem (Mumford's Conjecture) follows.
Let T be a maximal torus of a connected reductive group G that acts linearly on a projective variety X so that all semi-stable points are stable. This paper compares the integration on the geometric invariant theory quotient X//G of Chow classes to the integration on the geometric invariant theory quotient X//T of certain lifts of these classes twisted by the top Chern class of the T -equivariant vector bundle induced by the quotient of the adjoint representation on the Lie algebra of G by that of T . We provide a purely algebraic proof that the ratio between any two such integrals is an invar…
We obtain a global resolution for the sheaf of differential operators on smooth geometric quotients of free linear actions of algebraic groups. The terms of our resolution involve symmetric and alternating powers of vector bundles easily constructed geometrically from the algebraic group and the vector space on which it acts.
We extend the methods of geometric invariant theory to actions of non--reductive groups in the case of homomorphisms between decomposable sheaves whose automorphism groups are non--reductive. Given a linearization of the natural action of the group $\Aut(E)\times\Aut(F)$ on Hom(E,F), a homomorphism is called stable if its orbit with respect to the unipotent radical is contained in the stable locus with respect to the natural reductive subgroup of the automorphism group. We encounter effective numerical conditions for a linearization such that the corresponding open set of semi-stable homomorph…
Recent results in geometric invariant theory (GIT) for non-reductive linear algebraic group actions allow us to stratify quotient stacks of the form [X/H], where X is a projective scheme and H is a linear algebraic group with internally graded unipotent radical acting linearly on X, in such a way that each stratum [S/H] has a geometric quotient S/H. This leads to stratifications of moduli stacks (for example, sheaves over a projective scheme) such that each stratum has a coarse moduli space.
In this article we review the question of constructing geometric quotients of actions of linear algebraic groups on irreducible varieties over algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero, in the spirit of Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT). The article surveys some recent work on geometric invariant theory and quotients of varieties by linear algebraic group actions, as well as background material on linear algebraic groups, Mumford's GIT and some of the challenges that the non-reductive setting presents. The earlier work of two of the authors in the setting of unipotent group a…
This paper applies the decomposition theorem in intersection cohomology to geometric invariant theory quotients, relating the intersection cohomology of the quotient to that of the semistable points for the action. Suppose a connected reductive complex algebraic group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective variety $X$. We prove that if $1 \to N \to G \to H \to 1$ is a short exact sequence of connected reductive groups, and $X^{ss}$ the set of semistable points for the action of $N$ on $X$, then the $H$-equivariant intersection cohomology of the geometric invariant theory quotient $X^{ss}//N…
We study the Borel moment map $μ_B:T^*(\mathfrak{b}\times \mathbb{C}^n)\rightarrow \mathfrak{b}^*$, given by $(r,s,i,j)\mapsto [r,s]+ij$, and describe our algorithm to construct the geometric invariant theory (GIT) quotients $μ_B^{-1}(0)/\!\!/_{\det}B$ and $μ_B^{-1}(0)/\!\!/_{\det^{-1}}B$, and the affine quotient $μ_B^{-1}(0)/\!\!/B$. We also provide an insight of the singular locus of $2^n$ irreducible components of $μ_B$. Finally, analogous to the Hilbert--Chow morphism, we discuss that the GIT quotient for the Borel setting is a resolution of singularities.
Geometric Invariant Theory gives a method for constructing quotients for group actions on algebraic varieties which in many cases appear as moduli spaces parametrizing isomorphism classes of geometric objects (vector bundles, polarized varieties, etc.). The quotient depends on a choice of an ample linearized line bundle. Two choices are equivalent if they give rise to identical quotients. A priori, there are infinitely many choices since there are infinitely many isomorphism classes of linearized ample line bundles. Hence several fundamental questions naturally arise. Is the set of equivalence…
In this paper we shall give formulas for the pairings of intersection cohomology classes of complementary dimensions in the intersection cohomology of geometric invariant theoretic quotients for which semistability is not necessarily the same as stability (although we make some weaker assumptions on the action). We also give formulas for intersection pairings on resolutions of singularities (or more precisely partial resolutions, since orbifold singularities are allowed) of the quotients.
We consider actions of reductive groups on a varieties with finitely generated Cox ring, e.g., the classical case of a diagonal action on a product of projective spaces. Given such an action, we construct via combinatorial data in the Cox ring all maximal open subsets such that the quotient is quasiprojective or embeddable into a toric variety. As applications, we obtain an explicit description of the chamber structure of the linearized ample cone and several Gelfand-MacPherson type correspondences relating quotients of reductive groups to quotients of torus actions. Moreover, our approach pro…
We study the relationship between derived categories of factorizations on gauged Landau-Ginzburg models related by variations of the linearization in Geometric Invariant Theory. Under assumptions on the variation, we show the derived categories are comparable by semi-orthogonal decompositions and describe the complementary components. We also verify a question posed by Kawamata: we show that $D$-equivalence and $K$-equivalence coincide for such variations. The results are applied to obtain a simple inductive description of derived categories of coherent sheaves on projective toric Deligne-Mumf…
Using the geometric quotient of a real algebraic set by the action of a finite group G, we construct invariants of GAS sets with respect to equivariant homeomorphisms with AS-graph, including additive invariants with values in Z.
We study linear actions of algebraic groups on smooth projective varieties X. A guiding goal for us is to understand the cohomology of "quotients" under such actions, by generalizing (from reductive to non-reductive group actions) existing methods involving Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT). We concentrate on actions of unipotent groups H, and define sets of stable points X^s and semistable points X^{ss}, often explicitly computable via the methods of reductive GIT, which reduce to the standard definitions due to Mumford in the case of reductive actions. We compare these with definiti…
We study how to use a suitably ample locally free sheaf over a proper Deligne-Mumford stack to furnish an embedding of the stack into a geometric invariant theory (GIT) quotient stack constructed from a finite-dimensional linear representation of the general linear group.
We show the existence of geometric quotients for the spaces of certain classes of morphisms of sheaves on projective space, modulo the canonical action of the group of automorphisms.
The aim of this paper is to show that classical geometric invariant theory (GIT) has an effective analogue for linear actions of a non-reductive algebraic group $H$ with graded unipotent radical on a projective scheme $X$. Here the linear action of $H$ is required to extend to a semi-direct product $\hat{H} = H \rtimes \mathbb{G}_m$ with a multiplicative one-parameter group which acts on the Lie algebra of the unipotent radical $U$ of $H$ with all weights strictly positive, and which centralises a Levi subgroup $R \cong H/U$ of $H$. We show that $X$ has an $H$-invariant open subscheme (the 'ha…
Given an action of a reductive group on a normal variety, we construct all invariant open subsets admitting a good quotient with a quasiprojective or a divisorial quotient space. Our approach extends known constructions like Mumford's Geometric Invariant Theory. We obtain several new Hilbert-Mumford type theorems, and we extend a projectivity criterion of Bialynicki-Birula and Swiecicka for varieties with semisimple group action from the smooth to the singular case.
In this paper, we prove that any two birational projective varieties with finite quotient singularities can be realized as two geometric GIT quotients of a non-singular projective variety by a reductive algebraic group. Then, by applying the theory of Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory Quotients ([3]), we show that they are related by a sequence of GIT wall-crossing flips.
We define a natural compactification of an arrangement complement in a ball quotient. We show that when this complement has a moduli space interpretation, then this compactification is often one that appears naturally by means of geometric invariant theory. We illustrate this with the moduli spaces of smooth quartic curves and rational elliptic surfaces.
We describe the structure of geometric quotients for proper locally triangulable additve group actions on locally trivial A^3-bundles over a noetherian normal base scheme X defined over a field of characteristic 0. In the case where dim X=1, we show in particular that every such action is a translation with geometric quotient isomorphic to the total space of a vector bundle of rank 2 over X. As a consequence, every proper triangulable Ga-action on the affine four space A^4 over a field of characteristic 0 is a translation with geometric quotient isomorphic to A^3.
Let $U$ be a graded unipotent group over the complex numbers, in the sense that it has an extension $\hat{U}$ by the multiplicative group such that the action of the multiplicative group by conjugation on the Lie algebra of $U$ has all its weights strictly positive. Given any action of $U$ on a projective variety $X$ extending to an action of $\hat{U}$ which is linear with respect to an ample line bundle on $X$, then provided that one is willing to replace the line bundle with a tensor power and to twist the linearisation of the action of $\hat{U}$ by a suitable (rational) character, and provi…
Let $x_1, x_2,\ldots$ be a system of homogeneous polynomial generators for the Lazard ring $\mathbb{L}^*=MU^{2*}$ and let $MGL_S$ denote Voevodsky's algebraic cobordism spectrum in the motivic stable homotopy category over a base-scheme $S$.Take $S$ essentially smooth over a field $k$. Relying on Hopkins-Morel-Hoyois isomorphism of the 0th slice $s_0MGL_S$ for Voevodsky's slice tower with $MGL_S/(x_1, x_2,\ldots)$ (after inverting the characteristic of $k$), Spitzweck computes the remaining slices of $MGL_S$ as $s_nMGL_S=Σ^n_TH\mathbb{Z}\otimes \mathbb{L}^{-n}$ (again, after inverting the char…
In this article we suggest a new approach to the systematic, computer-aided construction and to the classification of product-quotient surfaces, introducing a new invariant, the integer gamma, which depends only on the singularities of the quotient model X=(C_1 x C_2)/G. It turns out that gamma is related to the codimension of the subspace of H^{1,1} generated by algebraic curves coming from the construction (i.e., the classes of the two fibers and the Hirzebruch-Jung strings arising from the minimal resolution of singularities of X). Profiting from this new insight we developped and implement…
We study the deformations of the minimally elliptic surface singularity $N_{16}$. A standard argument reduces the study of the deformations of $N_{16}$ to the study of the moduli space of pairs $(C,L)$ consisting of a plane quintic curve and a line. We construct this moduli space in two ways: via the periods of $K3$ surfaces and by using geometric invariant theory (GIT). The GIT construction depends on the choice of the linearization. In particular, for one choice of linearization we recover the space constructed via $K3$ surfaces and for another we obtain the full deformation space of $N_{16}…
Given an action of a complex reductive Lie group G on a normal variety X, we show that every analytically Zariski-open subset of X admitting an analytic Hilbert quotient with projective quotient space is given as the set of semistable points with respect to some G-linearised Weil divisor on X. Applying this result to Hamiltonian actions on algebraic varieties we prove that semistability with respect to a momentum map is equivalent to GIT-semistability in the sense of Mumford and Hausen. It follows that the number of compact momentum map quotients of a given algebraic Hamiltonian G-variety is f…
We give explicit equations for the Chow and Hilbert quotients of a projective scheme X by the action of an algebraic torus T in an auxiliary toric variety. As a consequence we provide GIT descriptions of these canonical quotients, and obtain other GIT quotients of X by variation of GIT quotient. We apply these results to find equations for the moduli space \bar{M}_{0,n} of stable genus zero n-pointed curves as a subvariety of a smooth toric variety defined via tropical methods.
The wall-and-chamber structure of the dependence of the reductive GIT quotient on the choice of linearisation is well known. In this article, we first give a brief survey of recent results in non-reductive GIT, which apply when the unipotent radical is 'graded'. We then examine the dependence of these non-reductive quotients on the linearisation and an additional parameter, the choice of one-parameter subgroup grading the unipotent radical, and arrive at a picture similar to the reductive one.
We suggest to endow Mumford's GIT quotient scheme with a stack structure, by replacing Proj(-) of the invariant ring with its stack theoretic analogue. We analyse the stacks resulting in this way from classically studied invariant rings, and in particular for binary forms of low degree. Our viewpoint is that the stack structure carries interesting geometric information that is intrinsically present in the invariant ring, but lost when passing to its Proj(-).
Let $S$ be a smooth projective surface with $p_g=0$, let $ι$ be a regular involution acting on $S$, and let $W$ be the resolution of singularities of the quotient surface $S/ι$. In the paper we prove that Bloch's conjecture holds for the surface $S$ if and only if it holds for the surface $W$. This yields Bloch's conjecture for all surfaces $S$ whenever the same conjecture is true for the desingularized quotient $W$. In particular, Bloch's conjecture holds true for all numerical Godeaux surfaces with involutions, a "half" of Campedelli surfaces with involutions, the surface of Craighero and Ga…
Let S be a Noetherian scheme, f:X->Y a surjective S-morphism of S-schemes, with X of finite type over S. We discuss what makes Y of finite type. First, we prove that if S is excellent, Y is reduced, and f is universally open, then Y is of finite type. We apply this to understand Fogarty's theorem in "Geometric quotients are algebraic schemes, Adv. Math. 48 (1983), 166--171" for the special case that the group scheme G is flat over the Noetherian base scheme S. Namely, we prove that if G is a flat S-group scheme of finite type acting on X and f is its strict orbit space, then Y is of finite typ…
We classify all geometric torsion points on the Fermat quotients $y^n = x^d + 1$ where $n, d \ge 2$ are coprime. In addition, we classify all geometric torsion points on the generic superelliptic curve $y^n = (x - a_1) \cdots (x - a_d)$, extending a result of Poonen and Stoll, who considered the hyperelliptic $n = 2$ case.
When a reductive group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective scheme $X$ there is a stratification of $X$ into $G$-invariant locally closed subschemes, with an open stratum $X^{ss}$ formed by the semistable points in the sense of Mumford's geometric invariant theory which has a categorical quotient $X^{ss} \to X//G$. In this article we describe a method for constructing quotients of the unstable strata. As an application, we construct moduli spaces of sheaves of fixed Harder-Narasimhan type with some extra data (an '$n$-rigidification') on a projective base.
The paper proves that if a reductive group scheme acts properly on a scheme then the geometric quotient exists as an algebraic space. As a consequence we obtain the existence of the moduli spcace of canonically polarized varieties over Spec Z.
We study the Fulton-Macpherson operational Chow rings of good moduli spaces of properly stable, smooth, Artin stacks. Such spaces are étale locally isomorphic to geometric invariant theory quotients of affine schemes, and are therefore natural extensions of GIT quotients. Our main result is that, with rational coefficients, every operational class can be represented by a so-called topologically strong cycle on the corresponding stack. Moreover, this cycle is unique modulo rational equivalence on the stack. Using out methods, we prove that if $X$ is the good moduli space of a properly stable, s…
