In 1972, Becker [J. Reine Angew. Math. 255 (1972), 23-43] discovered a construction of quasiconformal extensions making use of the classical radial Loewner chains. In this paper we develop a chordal analogue of Becker's construction. As an application, we establish new sufficient conditions for quasiconformal extendibility of holomorphic functions and give a simplified proof of one well-known result by Becker and Pommerenke for functions in the half-plane [J. Reine Angew. Math. 354 (1984), 74-94].
In this article, we obtain quasiconformal extensions of some classes of conformal maps defined either on the unit disc or on the exterior of it onto the extended complex plane. Some of these extensions have been obtained by constructing suitable Loewner chains and others have been obtained by applying a well-known result.
This survey article gives an account of quasiconformal extensions of univalent functions with its motivational background from Teichmüller theory and classical and modern approaches based on Loewner theory.
In 1972, J. Becker [J. Reine Angew. Math. 255] discovered a sufficient condition for quasiconformal extendibility of Loewner chains. Many known conditions for quasiconformal extendibility of holomorphic functions in the unit disk can be deduced from his result. We give a new proof of (a generalization of) Becker's result based on Slodkowski's Extended lambda-Lemma. Moreover, we characterize all quasiconformal extensions produced by Becker's (classical) construction and use that to obtain examples in which Becker's extension is extremal (i.e. optimal in the sense of maximal dilatation) or, on t…
We prove that for every $C>0$ there exists a driving function $U:[0,1]\to\mathbb{R}$ such that the corresponding chordal Loewner-Kufarev equation generates a quasislit and $ \limsup_{h\downarrow0}\frac{|U(1)-U(1-h)|}{\sqrt{h}}=C. $
The aim of this survey paper is to present a complete direct proof of the well celebrated cornerstone result in Loewner Theory, originally due to Kufarev et al [Trudy Tomsk. Gos. Univ. Ser. Meh.-Mat. 200 (1968) 142-164. MR0257336 (41 #1987)], stating that the family of the hydrodynamically normalized conformal self-maps of the upper-half plane onto the complement of a gradually erased slit satisfies, under a suitable parametrization, the chordal Loewner differential equation. The proof is based solely on basic theorems of Geometric Function Theory combined with some elementary topological fact…
A new approach in Loewner Theory proposed by Bracci, Contreras, Díaz-Madrigal and Gumenyuk provides a unified treatment of the radial and the chordal versions of the Loewner equations. In this framework, a generalized Loewner chain satisfies the differential equation $$ \partial_{t}f_{t}(z) = (z - τ(t))(1-\overline{τ(t)}z)\partial_{z}f_{t}(z)p(z,t), $$ where $τ: [0,\infty) \to \overline{\mathbb{D}}$ is measurable and $p$ is called a Herglotz function. In this paper, we will show that if there exists a $k \in [0,1)$ such that $p$ satisfies $$ |p(z,t) - 1| \leq k |p(z,t) + 1| $$ for all $z \in \…
We consider a univalent analytic function $f$ on the half-plane satisfying the condition that the supremum norm of its (pre-)Schwarzian derivative vanishes on the boundary. Under certain extra assumptions on $f$, we show that there exists a chordal Loewner chain initiated from $f$ until some finite time, and this Loewner chain defines a quasiconformal extension of $f$ over the boundary such that its complex dilatation is given explicitly in terms of the (pre-)Schwarzian derivative in some neighborhood of the boundary. This can be regarded as the half-plane version of the corresponding result d…
In [5], O. Bauer interpreted the chordal Loewner equation in terms of non-commutative probability theory. We follow this perspective and identify the chordal Loewner equations as the non-autonomous versions of evolution equations for semigroups in monotone and anti-monotone probability theory. We also look at the corresponding equation for free probability theory.
We consider a value range $\{g(i,T)\}$ of solutions to the chordal Loewner equation with the restriction $|λ(t)| \le c$ on the driving function. We use reachable set methods and the Pontryagin maximum principle.
We study chordal Loewner families in the upper half-plane and show that they have a parametric representation. We show one, that to every chordal Loewner family there corresponds a unique measurable family of probability measures on the real line, and two, that to every measurable family of probability measures on the real line there corresponds a unique chordal Loewner family. In both cases the correspondence is being given by solving the chordal Loewner equation. We use this to show that any probability measure on the real line with finite variance and mean zero has univalent Cauchy transfor…
In this paper, we discuss the chordal Komatu-Loewner equation on standard slit domains in a manner applicable not just to a simple curve but also a family of continuously growing hulls. Especially a conformally invariant characterization of the Komatu-Loewner evolution is obtained. As an application, we prove a sort of conformal invariance, or locality, of the stochastic Komatu-Loewner evolution $\mathrm{SKLE}_{\sqrt{6}, -b_{\mathrm{BMD}}}$ in a fully general setting, which solves an open problem posed by Chen, Fukushima and Suzuki [Stochastic Komatu-Loewner evolutions and SLEs, Stoch. Proc. A…
In this note we consider a multi-slit Loewner equation with constant coefficients that describes the growth of multiple SLE curves connecting $N$ points on $\mathbb{R}$ to infinity within the upper half-plane. For every $N\in\mathbb{N}$, this equation provides a measure valued process $t\mapsto \{α_{N,t}\},$ and we are interested in the limit behaviour as $N\to\infty.$ We prove tightness of the sequence $\{α_{N,t}\}_{N\in\mathbb{N}}$ under certain assumptions and address some further problems.
Loewner Theory is a deep technique in Complex Analysis affording a basis for many further important developments such as the proof of famous Bieberbach's conjecture and well-celebrated Schramm's Stochastic Loewner Evolution (SLE). It provides analytic description of expanding domains dynamics in the plane. Two cases have been developed in the classical theory, namely the {\it radial} and the {\it chordal} Loewner evolutions, referring to the associated families of holomorphic self-mappings being normalized at an internal or boundary point of the reference domain, respectively. Recently there h…
This paper studies the behavior of solutions near the explosion time to the chordal Komatu-Loewner equation for slits, motivated by the preceding studies by Bauer and Friedrich (2008) and by Chen and Fukushima (2018). The solution to this equation represents moving slits in the upper half-plane. We show that the distance between the slits and driving function converges to zero at its explosion time. We also prove a probabilistic version of this asymptotic behavior for stochastic Komatu-Loewner evolutions under some natural assumptions.
By using the method of Loewner chains, we establish some sufficient conditions for the analyticity and univalency of functions defined by an integral operator. Also, we refine the result to a quasiconformal extension criterion with the help of Beckers's method.
In this paper, we show that the chordal Loewner differential equation with $C^β$ driving function generates a $C^{β+ 1/2}$ slit for $1/2 < β\leq 2$, except when $β= 3/2$ the slit is only proved to be weakly $C^{1,1}$.
The paper is devoted to the multiple chordal Loewner differential equation with different driving functions on two time intervals. We obtain exact implicit or explicit solutions to the Loewner equations with piecewise constant driving functions and with combined constant and square root driving functions. In both cases, there is an analytical and geometrical description of generated traces.
We obtain a first order differential equation for the driving function of the chordal Loewner differential equation in the case where the domain is slit by a curve which is a trajectory arc of certain quadratic differentials. In particular this includes the case when the curve is a path on the square, triangle or hexagonal lattice in the upper halfplane or, indeed, in any domain with boundary on the lattice. We also demonstrate how we use this to calculate the driving function numerically. Equivalent results for other variants of the Loewner differential equation are also obtained: Multiple sl…
We describe the region $\mathcal{V}(z_0)$ of values of $f(z_0)$ for all normalized bounded univalent functions $f$ in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ at a fixed point $z_0 \in \mathbb{D}$. The proof is based on identifying $\mathcal{V}(z_0)$ as the reachable set of the radial Loewner differential equation. We also prove an analogous result for the upper half-plane using the chordal Loewner equation.
In this text we make study of the geometry of the solutions to the radial and chordal Loewner PDEs, for a particular choice of time-dependent driving measures with multiple point masses.
In this paper we confirm that several crucial theorems due to Pommerenke and Becker for the theory of Loewner chains work well without normalization on the complex-valued first coefficient. As applications of those considerations, some new univalent and quasiconformal extension criteria are given in the last section.
A quasislit is the image of a vertical line segment [0, iy], y > 0, under a quasiconformal homeomorphism of the upper half-plane fixing infinity. Quasislits correspond precisely to curves generated by the Loewner equation with a driving function in the Lip-1/2 class. It is known that a quasislit is contained in a cone depending only on its Loewner driving function Lip-1/2 seminorm, s. In this note we use the Loewner equation to give quantitative estimates on the opening angle of this cone in the full range s <4. The estimate is shown to be sharp for small s. As consequences, we derive explicit…
In paper found conditions that guarantee that solution of Loewner-Kufarev equation maps unit disc onto domain with quasiconformal rectifiable boundary, or it has continuation on closed unit disc, or it's inverse function has continuation on closure of domain.
Since the nonlinear integral transforms $J_α[f](z) = \int_{0}^{z}(f'(u))^α du$ and $I_α[f](z) =\int_0^z (f(u)/u)^α du$ with a complex number $α$ have been introduced, a great number of studies were dedicated to deriving sufficient conditions for univalence on the unit disk. On the other hand, little is known about the conditions that $J_α[f]$ or $I_α[f]$ produces a holomorphic univalent function in the unit disk which extends to a quasiconformal map on the complex plane. In this paper we discuss quasiconformal extendibility of the integral transforms $J_α[f]$ and $I_α[f]$ for holomorphic funct…
We consider the chordal Loewner differential equation for multiple slits in the upper half-plane and relations between the pointwise Hölder continuity of the driving functions and the generated hulls. The first result generalizes a result of Lind that gives a sufficient condition for driving functions to generate simple curves. The second result translates the property that the hulls locally look like straight lines at their starting points into a condition for the driving functions.
In part 1 (Chapter 2) we present the basic notions of Loewner theory. Here we use a modern form which was developed by F. Bracci, M. Contreras, S. Díaz-Madrigal et al. and which can be applied to certain higher dimensional complex manifolds. We look at two domains in more detail: the Euclidean unit ball and the polydisc. Here we consider two classes of biholomorphic mappings which were introduced by T. Poreda and G. Kohr as generalizations of the class S and we prove a conjecture about support points of these classes. In part 2 (Chapter 3) we consider one special Loewner equation: the chordal …
The (chordal) Loewner differential equation encodes certain curves in the half-plane (aka traces) by continuous real-valued driving functions. Not all curves are traces; the latter can be defined via a geometric condition called the local growth property. In this paper we give two other equivalent conditions that characterise traces: 1. A continuous curve is a trace if and only if mapping out any initial segment preserves its continuity (which can be seen as an analogue of the domain Markov property of SLE). 2. The (not necessarily simple) traces are exactly the uniform limits of simple traces…
We revisit the convergence of loop-erased random walk, LERW, to SLE(2) when the curves are parametrized by capacity. We construct a coupling of the chordal version of LERW and chordal SLE(2) based on the Green's function for LERW as martingale observable and using an elementary discrete-time Loewner "difference" equation. This coupling is different than the ones previously considered in this context. Our recent work (arXiv:1603.05203) on the convergence of LERW parametrized by length to SLE(2) parameterized by Minkowski content uses specific features of the coupling constructed here.
We show that, under mild assumptions on the limiting curve, a sequence of simple chordal planar curves converges uniformly whenever certain Loewner driving functions converge. We extend this result to random curves. The random version applies in particular to random lattice paths that have chordal $\mathrm {SLE}_κ$ as a scaling limit, with $κ<8$ (nonspace-filling). Existing $\mathrm {SLE}_κ$ convergence proofs often begin by showing that the Loewner driving functions of these paths (viewed from $\infty$) converge to Brownian motion. Unfortunately, this is not sufficient, and additional argumen…
Let $λ:[0,+\infty)\mapsto\mathbb{R}$ be the driving function of a chordal Loewner process. In this paper we find new conditions on $λ$ which imply that the process is generated by a simple curve. This result improves former one by Lind ,Marshall and Rhode, and it particular gives new results about the case $λ(t)=cW_b(t)$, $W_b$ being a Hölder-$1/2$ Weierstrass function. In the second part we find new conditions on $λ$ implying that the process is generated by a curve. The main tool here is a duality relation between the real part and the imaginary part of the Loewner equation.
We investigate univalent functions $f(z)=z+a_2z^2+a_3z^3+\ldots$ in the unit disk $\mathbb D$ extendible to $k$-q.c.(=quasiconformal) automorphisms of $\mathbb C$. In particular, we answer a question on estimation of $|a_3|$ raised by Kühnau and Niske [Math. Nachr. 78 (1977) 185-192]. This is one of the results we obtain studying univalent functions that admit q.c.-extensions via a construction, based on Loewner's parametric representation method, due to Becker [J. Reine Angew. Math. 255 (1972) 23-43]. Another problem we consider is to find the maximal $k_*\in(0,1]$ such that every univalent f…
In this paper we introduce a general version of the notion of Loewner chains which comes from the new and unified treatment, given in [arXiv:0807.1594], of the radial and chordal variant of the Loewner differential equation, which is of special interest in geometric function theory as well as for various developments it has given rise to, including the famous Schramm-Loewner evolution. In this very general setting, we establish a deep correspondence between these chains and the evolution families introduced in [arXiv:0807.1594]. Among other things, we show that, up to a Riemann map, such a cor…
We study some features of the energy of a deterministic chordal Loewner chain, which is defined as the Dirichlet energy of its driving function. In particular, using an interpretation of this energy as a large deviation rate function for SLE$_κ$ as $κ$ tends to 0 and the known reversibility of the SLE$_κ$ curves for small $κ$, we show that the energy of a deterministic curve from one boundary point A of a simply connected domain D to another boundary point B, is equal to the energy of its time-reversal ie. of the same curve but viewed as going from B to A in D.
Among diversity of frameworks and constructions introduced in Loewner Theory by different authors, one can distinguish two closely related but still different ways of reasoning, which colloquially may be described as "increasing" and "decreasing". In this paper we review in short the main types of (deterministic) Loewner evolution discussed in the literature and describe in detail the local duality between "increasing" and "decreasing" cases within the general unifying approach in Loewner Theory proposed recently in [Bracci et al. to appear in J Reine Angew Math; arXiv:0807.1594v1], [Bracci et…
Using the estimate of the difference between the discrete harmonic function and its corresponding continuous version we derive a rate of convergence of the Loewner driving function for the harmonic explorer to the Brownian motion with speed 4 on the real line. Based on this convergence rate, the derivative estimate for chordal $\mbox{SLE}_4$, and the estimate of tip structure modulus for harmonic explorer paths, we obtain an explicit power-law rate of convergence of the harmonic explorer paths to the trace of chordal $\mbox{SLE}_4$ in the supremum distance.
A well-known theorem by J. Becker states that if a normalized univalent function $f$ in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ can be embedded as the initial element into a Loewner chain $(f_t)_{t\geqslant 0}$ such that the Herglotz function $p$ in the Loewner -- Kufarev PDE $$\partial f_t(z)/\partial f=zf'_t(z)p(z,t),\qquad z\in\mathbb{D},\quad\mathrm{a.e.}~t\ge0,$$ satisfies $\big|(p(z,t)-1)/(p(z,t)+1)\big|\le k<1$, then $f$ admits a $k$-q.c. (="$k$-quasiconformal") extension $F:\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}$. The converse is not true. However, a simple argument shows that if $f$ has a $q$-q.c. extension with…
