We construct Schroedinger-like solutions of the Vasiliev higher spin theory in D>3 dimension. Symmetries of such solutions and the linearised equation of motion for the scalar on such backgrounds are analysed. We further propose Galilean invariant bosonic and fermionic field theories that could be dual to the two parity invariant higher spin theories on the Schroedinger-like background respectively. The discussion is phrased mainly in D=4 dimension, while similar constructions follow straightforwardly in higher dimensions.
We exhibit a nonrelativistic ideal gas with a Kaluza-Klein tower of species, featuring a singular behavior of thermodynamic functions at zero chemical potential. In this way, we provide a qualitative match to the thermodynamics of recently found black holes in backgrounds with asymptotic nonrelativistic conformal symmetry.
We obtain the reflected entropy for bipartite states in a class of $(1+1)$-dimensional Galilean conformal field theories ($GCFT_{1+1}$) through a replica technique. Furthermore we compare our results with the entanglement wedge cross section (EWCS) obtained for the dual (2+1) dimensional asymptotically flat geometries in the context of flat holography. We find that our results are consistent with the duality between the reflected entropy and the bulk EWCS for flat holographic scenarios.
The odd entanglement entropy (OEE) for bipartite states in a class of $(1+1)$-dimensional Galilean conformal field theories ($GCFT_{1+1}$) is obtained through an appropriate replica technique. In this context our results are compared with the entanglement wedge cross section (EWCS) for $(2+1)$-dimensional asymptotically flat geometries dual to the $GCFT_{1+1}$ in the framework of flat holography. We find that our results are consistent with the duality of the difference between the odd entanglement entropy and the entanglement entropy of bipartite states, with the bulk EWCS for flat holographi…
We embed a holographic description of a quantum field theory with Galilean conformal invariance in string theory. The key observation is that such field theories may be realized as conventional superconformal field theories with a known string theory embedding, twisted by the R-symmetry in a light-like direction. Using the Null Melvin Twist, we construct the appropriate dual geometry and its non-extremal generalization. From the nonzero temperature solution we determine the equation of state. We also discuss the hydrodynamic regime of these non-relativistic plasmas and show that the shear visc…
We present the analytical calculation of entanglement entropy for a class of two dimensional field theories governed by the symmetries of the Galilean conformal algebra, thus providing a rare example of such an exact computation. These field theories are the putative holographic duals to theories of gravity in three-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes. We provide a check of our field theory answers by an analysis of geodesics. We also exploit the Chern-Simons formulation of three-dimensional gravity and adapt recent proposals of calculating entanglement entropy by Wilson lines in this c…
Recently, gravity duals for certain Galilean-invariant conformal field theories have been constructed. In this paper, we point out that the spectrum of the particle number operator in the examples found so far is not a necessary consequence of the existence of a gravity dual. We record some progress towards more realistic spectra. In particular, we construct bulk systems with asymptotic Schrodinger symmetry and only one extra dimension. In examples, we find solutions which describe these Schrodinger-symmetric systems at finite density. A lift to M-theory is used to resolve a curvature singular…
We advance holographic constructions for the entanglement negativity of bipartite states in a class of $(1+1)-$dimensional Galilean conformal field theories dual to asymptotically flat three dimensional bulk geometries described by Einstein Gravity and Topologically Massive Gravity. The construction involves specific algebraic sums of the lengths of bulk extremal curves homologous to certain combinations of the intervals appropriate to such bipartite states. Our analysis exactly reproduces the corresponding replica technique results in the large central charge limit. We substantiate our constr…
We study chaos in non-Lorentzian field theories, specifically Galilean and Carrollian conformal field theories in two dimensions. In a large central charge limit, we find that the Lyapunov exponent saturates the bound on chaos, conjectured originally for relativistic field theories. We recover the same Lyapunov exponent holographically by a shock-wave calculation in three-dimensional flat space cosmologies, providing further evidence for flat space holography.
We introduce a prescription to compute the entanglement entropy of Galilean conformal field theories by combining gravitational anomalies and an İnönü-Wigner contraction. We find that our expression for the entanglement entropy in the thermal limit reproduces the Cardy formula for Galilean conformal field theories. Using this proposal, we calculate the entanglement entropy for a class of Galilean conformal field theories, which are believed to be dual to three-dimensional flat-space cosmological solutions. These geometries describe expanding (contracting) universes and can be viewed as the fla…
The non-relativistic version of the non commutative Field Theory, recently introduced by Lozano, Moreno and Schaposnik [1], is shown to admit the ``exotic'' Galilean symmetry found before for point particles.
We study the Galilean symmetry in a nonrelativistic model, recently advanced by Bak, Jackiw and Pi, involving the coupling of a nonabelian Chern-Simons term with matter fields. The validity of the Galilean algebra on the constraint surface is demonstrated in the gauge independent formalism. Then the reduced space formulation is discussed in the axial gauge using the symplectic method. An anomalous term in the Galilean algebra is obtained which can be eliminated by demanding conditions on the Green function. Finally, the axial gauge is also treated by Dirac's method. Galilean symmetry is preser…
The six-dimensional exotic Galilean algebra in (2+1) dimensions with two central charges $m$ and $θ$, is extended when $m=0$, to a ten-dimensional Galilean conformal algebra with dilatation, expansion, two acceleration generators and the central charge $θ$. A realisation of such a symmetry is provided by a model with higher derivatives recently discussed in \cite{peterwojtek}. We consider also a realisation of the Galilean conformal symmetry for the motion with a Coulomb potential and a magnetic vortex interaction. Finally, we study the restriction, as well as the modification, of the Galilean…
When the interaction potential is suitably reordered, the Moyal field theory admits two types of Galilean symmetries, namely the conventional mass-parameter-centrally-extended one with commuting boosts, but also the two-fold centrally extended ``exotic'' Galilean symmetry, where the commutator of the boosts yields the noncommutative parameter. In the free case, one gets an ``exotic'' two-parameter central extension of the Schroedinger group. The conformal symmetry is, however, broken by the interaction.
Conformal Galilei algebra contains so(1,2) subalgebra which is the conformal algebra in one dimension. In this note we generalize methods previously developed for one-dimensional many-body systems and construct a unitary map relating a quantum mechanics invariant under the conformal Galilean transformations to a set of decoupled particles for which the same symmetry is realized in a nonlocal way. Possible applications of the map are discussed.
We provide a framework for non-relativistic holography so that a covariant action principle ensuring the Galilean symmetry for dual conformal field theory is given. This framework is based on the Bargmann lift of the Newton-Cartan gravity to the one-dimensional higher Einstein gravity, or reversely, the null-like Kaluza-Klein reduction. We reproduce the previous zero temperature results, and our framework provides a natural explanation about why the holography is co-dimension 2. We then construct the black hole solution dual to the thermal CFT, and find the horizon is curvature singular. Howev…
We establish a construction for the entanglement wedge in asymptotically flat bulk geometries for subsystems in dual $(1+1)$-dimensional Galilean conformal field theories in the context of flat space holography. In this connection we propose a definition for the bulk entanglement wedge cross section for bipartite states of such dual non relativistic conformal field theories. Utilizing our construction for the entanglement wedge cross section we compute the entanglement negativity for such bipartite states through the generalization of an earlier proposal, in the context of the usual $AdS/CFT$ …
The ``exotic'' particle model associated with the two-parameter central extension of the planar Galilei group can be used to derive the ground states of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. Similar equations arise for a semiclassical Bloch electron. Exotic Galilean symmetry is also be shared by Chern-Simons field theory of the Moyal type.
A slightly modified and regularized version of the non-relativistic limit of the relativistic anyon model considered by Jackiw and Nair yields particles associated with the twofold central extension of the Galilei group, with independent spin and exotic structure.
A V-duality conjecture for noncommutative open string theories (NCOS) that result from decoupling D-branes in Lorentz-boost related backgrounds was put forward recently in hep-th/0006013. The aim of this paper is to test the Galilean nature of this conjecture in the gravity dual setup. We start with an (F, D3) bound state Lorentz-boosted along one D3-brane direction perpendicular to the F-string, and show that insisting a decoupled NCOS allows only infinitesimal Lorentz boosts. In this way, it is shown that the V-duality relates a family of NCOS by Galileo boosts. Starting with a Lorentz-boost…
A thorough analysis of Galilean symmetries for the gravitational well problem on a noncommutative plane is presented. A complete closure of the one-parameter centrally extended Galilean algebra is realised for the model. This implies that the field theoretic model constructed to describe noncommutative gravitational quantum well in \cite{ani} is indeed independent of the coordinate choice. Hence the energy spectrum predicted by the model can be associated with the experimental results to establish the upper-bound on time-space noncommutative parameter. Interestingly, noncommutativity is shown …
We show the twisted Galilean invariance of the noncommutative parameter, even in presence of space-time noncommutativity. We then obtain the deformed algebra of the Schrödinger field in configuration and momentum space by studying the action of the twisted Galilean group on the non-relativistic limit of the Klein-Gordon field. Using this deformed algebra we compute the two particle correlation function to study the possible extent to which the previously proposed violation of the Pauli principle may impact at low energies. It is concluded that any possible effect is probably well beyond detect…
An effective U(1) gauge invariant theory is constructed for a non-commutative Schrodinger field coupled to a background U(1)_{\star} gauge field in 2+1-dimensions using first order Seiberg-Witten map. We show that this effective theory can be cast in the form of usual Schrodinger action with interaction terms of noncommutative origin provided the gauge field is of ``background'' type with constant magnetic field. The Galilean symmetry is investigated and a violation is found in the boost sector. We also consider the problem of Hall conductivity in this framework.
In order to derive a large set of Hamiltonian dynamical systems, but with only first order Lagrangian, we resort to the formulation in terms of Lagrange-Souriau 2-form formalism. A wide class of systems derived in different phenomenological contexts are covered. The non-commutativity of the particle position coordinates are a natural consequence. Some explicit examples are considered.
The acceleration-dependent system with noncommuting coordinates, proposed by Lukierski, Stichel and Zakrzewski [Ann. Phys. 260, 224 (1997)] is derived as the non-relativistic limit of Mathisson's classical electron [Acta Physica Polonica 6, 218 (1937)], further discussed by Weyssenhoff and Raabe [Acta Physica Polonica 9, 7 (1947)]. The two-parameter centrally extended Galilean symmetry of the model is recoved using elementary methods. The relation to Schrödinger's Zitternde Elektron is indicated.
The procedure of null reduction provides a concrete way of constructing field theories with Galilean invariance. We use this to examine Galilean gauge theories, viz. Galilean electrodynamics and Yang-Mills theories in spacetime dimensions 3 and 4. Different non-relativistic conformal symmetries arise in these contexts: Schr{ö}dinger symmetry in $d=3$ and Galilean conformal symmetry in $d=4$. A canonical analysis further reveals that the symmetries enhance to their infinite dimensional versions in phase space and pick up central extensions. In addition, for the Abelian theory, we discuss non-re…
Vortex dynamics in a thin superfluid ${}^4$He film as well as in a type II superconductor is described by the classical counterpart of the model advocated by Peierls, and used for deriving the ground states of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. The model has non-commuting coordinates, and is obtained by reduction from a particle associated with the ``exotic'' extension of the planar Galilei group.
Non-relativistic versions of the AdS/CFT conjecture have recently been investigated in some detail. These have primarily been in the context of the Schrodinger symmetry group. Here we initiate a study based on a {\it different} non-relativistic conformal symmetry: one obtained by a parametric contraction of the relativistic conformal group. The resulting Galilean conformal symmetry has the same number of generators as the relativistic symmetry group and thus is different from the Schrodinger group (which has fewer). One of the interesting features of the Galilean Conformal Algebra is that it a…
The ``Laughlin'' picture of the Fractional Quantum Hall effect can be derived using the ``exotic'' model based on the two-fold centrally-extended planar Galilei group. When coupled to a planar magnetic field of critical strength determined by the extension parameters, the system becomes singular, and ``Faddeev-Jackiw'' reduction yields the ``Chern-Simons'' mechanics of Dunne, Jackiw, and Trugenberger. The reduced system moves according to the Hall law.
Galilean conformal algebra (GCA) is an Inonu-Wigner (IW) contraction of a conformal algebra, while Newton-Hooke string algebra is an IW contraction of an AdS algebra which is the isometry of an AdS space. It is shown that the GCA is a boundary realization of the Newton-Hooke string algebra in the bulk AdS. The string lies along the direction transverse to the boundary, and the worldsheet is AdS_2. The one-dimensional conformal symmetry so(2,1) and rotational symmetry so(d) contained in the GCA are realized as the symmetry on the AdS_2 string worldsheet and rotational symmetry in the space tran…
The Goheer-Kleban-Susskind no-go theorem says that the symmetry of de Sitter space is incompatible with finite entropy. The meaning and consequences of the theorem are discussed in the light of recent developments in holography and gravitational path integrals. The relation between the GKS theorem, Boltzmann fluctuations, wormholes, and exponentially suppressed non-perturbative phenomena suggests: the classical symmetry between different static patches is broken; and that eternal de Sitter space -- if it exists at all -- is an ensemble average.
We consider a generalization of nonrelativistic Schrödinger-Higgs Lagrangian by introducing a nonstandard kinetic term. We show that this model is Galilean invariant, we construct the conserved charges associated to the symmetries and realize the algebra of the Galilean group. In addition, we study the model in the presence of a gauge field. We also show that the gauged model is Galilean invariant. Finally, we explore relations between twin models and their solutions.
We investigate the symmetry structure of the non-relativistic limit of Yang-Mills theories. Generalising previous results in the Galilean limit of electrodynamics, we discover that for Yang-Mills theories there are a variety of limits inside the Galilean regime. We first explicitly work with the $SU(2)$ theory and then generalise to $SU(N)$ for all $N$, systematising our notation and analysis. We discover that the whole family of limits lead to different sectors of Galilean Yang-Mills theories and the equations of motion in each sector exhibit hitherto undiscovered infinite dimensional symmetr…
We show that a class of nonrelativistic algebras including non centrally-extended Schrodinger algebra and Galilean Conformal Algebra (GCA) has an affine extension in 2+1 hitherto unknown. This extension arises out of the conformal symmetries of the two dimensional complex plain. We suggest that this affine form may be the symmetry that explains the relaxation of some classical phenomena towards their critical point. This affine algebra admits a central extension and maybe realized in the bulk. The bulk realization suggests that this algebra may be derived by looking at the asymptotic symmetry …
Newtonian gravity was formulated as a geometrodynamic theory as far back in 1930s by Elie Cartan in what is named aptly as Newton Cartan space time. Though there are several approaches of realizing the algebraic structure of the Newton Cartan geometry from a contraction of the relativistic results, a dynamical (field theoretic) realization of it is lacking. In this paper we present such a realization from the localisation of the Galilean Symmetry of nonrelativistic matter field theories.
We argue that the gauge theory dual to the Type IIB string theory in ten-dimensional pp-wave background can be thought to `live' on an {\it Euclidean} subspace spanning four of the eight transverse coordinates. We then show that light-cone time evolution of the string is identifiable as the RG flow of the gauge theory -- a relation facilitating `holography' of the pp-wave background. The `holography' reorganizes the dual gauge theory into theories defined over Hilbert subspaces of fixed R-charge. The reorganization breaks the SO(4,2)$\times$SO(6) symmetry to a maximal subgroup SO(4)$\times$ SO…
We analyze the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking of scale invariance in Galilean invariant field theories. We show that the existence of a dynamic gapless dilaton mode depends on whether the $U(1)$ particle number or the Galilean boost symmetry are spontaneously broken. When both scale and particle number symmetries are spontaneously broken there is one propagating gapless Nambu-Goldstone mode. Its dispersion relation is linear if the chemical potential is nonzero and quadratic otherwise. We discuss the reversibility of RG flows in such theories.
We consider Schrodinger equations for a non-relativistic particle obeying N+1-th order higher derivative classical equation of motion. These equations are invariant under N(odd)-extended Galilean conformal (NGC) algebras in general d+1 dimensions. In 2+1 dimensions, the exotic Schrodinger equations are invariant under N(even)-GCA.
Quantum Mechanics in the non-commutative plane is shown to admit the ``exotic'' symmetry of the doubly-centrally-extended Galilei group. When coupled to a planar magnetic field whose strength is the inverse of the non-commutative parameter, the system becomes singular, and ``Faddeev-Jackiw'' reduction yields the ``Chern-Simons'' mechanics of Dunne, Jackiw, and Trugenberger. The reduced system moves according to the Hall law.
For the proposed duality relating a family of N=4 superconformal coset models to a certain supersymmetric higher spin theory on AdS_3, the asymptotic symmetry algebra of the bulk description is determined. It is shown that, depending on the choice of the boundary charges, one may obtain either the linear or the non-linear superconformal algebra on the boundary. We compare the non-linear version of the asymptotic symmetry algebra with the non-linear coset algebra and find non-trivial agreement in the 't Hooft limit, thus giving strong support for the proposed duality. As a by-product of our ana…
I concisely review the results of recent work done in collaboration with N. Beisert, H. Samtleben, and J. F. Morales, that shed some light on ``La Grande Bouffe'', the Pantagruelic Higgs mechanism whereby higher spin gauge fields in the AdS bulk eat lower spin Goldstone fields and become massive, and on its holographic implications such as the emergence of anomalous dimensions in the boundary N=4 SYM theory.
BMS symmetry, which is the asymptotic symmetry at null infinity of flat spacetime, is an important input for flat holography. In this paper, we give a holographic calculation of entanglement entropy and Rényi entropy in three dimensional Einstein gravity and Topologically Massive Gravity. The geometric picture for the entanglement entropy is the length of a spacelike geodesic which is connected to the interval at null infinity by two null geodesics. The spacelike geodesic is the fixed points of replica symmetry, and the null geodesics are along the modular flow. Our strategy is to first reform…
We study the consequences of imposing an approximate Galilean symmetry on the Effective Theory of Inflation, the theory of small perturbations around the inflationary background. This approach allows us to study the effect of operators with two derivatives on each field, which can be the leading interactions due to non-renormalization properties of the Galilean Lagrangian. In this case cubic non-Gaussianities are given by three independent operators, containing up to six derivatives, two with a shape close to equilateral and one peaking on flattened isosceles triangles. The four-point function…
Holographic low-energy spectral weight at zero temperature and finite momenta indicates the presence of a strongly coupled remnant of Pauli exclusion. Building upon previous work, we study the spectral weight of a bottom-up holographic superfluid model with spontaneously broken translational symmetry. We determine the effect of this symmetry breaking on the previously known attributes of the holographic superconductor spectral weight: 1) an instability at finite momenta and 2) the presence of nested Fermi surfaces (sometimes called Fermi shells). We find that the symmetry breaking seems to str…
We study confinement in 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(N)$ Super-Yang Mills (SYM) from a holographic point of view, focusing on the 1-form symmetry and its relation to chiral symmetry breaking. In the 5d supergravity dual, obtained by truncation of the Klebanov-Strassler solution, we identify the topological couplings that determine the 1-form symmetry and its 't Hooft anomalies. One such coupling is a mixed 0-form/1-form symmetry anomaly closely related to chiral symmetry breaking in gapped confining vacua. From the dual gravity description we also identify the infra-red (IR) 4d topological field the…
We obtain non-relativistic AdS4 X CP3 solutions with dynamical exponent 3 in type IIA string theory, both with and without Romans mass. The compactifications to four dimensions are found to describe Proca fields in anti-de Sitter spacetime. This leads us to conclude that the massive and massless IIA theories should be identified in four dimensions and the Romans mass should be identified with the `flux' along CP3 in a definite manner. From supergravity point of view, it is suggestive of some four-dimensional symmetry that rotates Romans mass into the flux along CP3. We also provide M-theory Ga…
Some aspects of the "exotic" particle, associated with the two-parameter central extension of the planar Galilei group are reviewed. A fundamental property is that it has non-commuting position coordinates. Other and generalized non-commutative models are also discussed. Minimal as well as anomalous coupling to an external electromagnetic field is presented. Supersymmetric extension is also considered. Exotic Galilean symmetry is also found in Moyal field theory. Similar equations arise for a semiclassical Bloch electron, used to explain the anomalous/spin/optical Hall effects.
Recently, a 2d coset model with N=3 superconformal symmetry was proposed to be holographic dual to a higher spin supergravity on AdS_3 and the relation to superstring theory was discussed. However, away from the tensionless limit, there is no higher spin symmetry and the higher spin states are massive. In this paper, we examine the deformations of the coset model which preserve N=3 superconformal symmetry, but break generic higher spin symmetry. We focus on double-trace type deformations which are dual to changes of boundary conditions for the bulk matter fields. In the bulk theory, the symmet…
This article is a detailed version of our short letter `On equilibrium partition function for non-relativistic fluid' [arXiv:1505.05677] extended to include an anomalous $U(1)$ symmetry. We construct a relativistic system, which we call null fluid and show that it is in one-to-one correspondence with a Galilean fluid living in one lower dimension. The correspondence is based on light cone reduction, which is known to reduce the Poincare symmetry of a theory to Galilean in one lower dimension. We show that the proposed null fluid and the corresponding Galilean fluid have exactly same symmetries…
The dynamics of the Goldstino mode of spontaneously broken supersymmetry is universal, being fully determined by the non-linearly realized symmetry. We investigate the small-field limit of this theory. This model non-linearly realizes an alternative supersymmetry algebra with vanishing anti-commutators between the fermionic generators, much like an internal supersymmetry. This Goldstino theory is akin to the Galilean scalar field theory that arises as the small-field limit of Dirac-Born-Infeld theory and non-linearly realizes the Galilean symmetry. Indeed, the small-field Goldstino is the part…
It is argued that the natural kinematics of the pilot-wave theory is Aristotelian. Despite appearances, Galilean invariance is not a fundamental symmetry of the low-energy theory. Instead, it is a fictitious symmetry that has been artificially imposed. It is concluded that the search for a Lorentz-invariant extension is physically misguided.
Enlarged planar Galilean symmetry, built of both space-time and field variables and also incorporating the ``exotic'' central extension is introduced. It is used to describe non-relativistic anyons coupled to an electromagnetic field. Our theory exhibits an anomalous velocity relation of the type used to explain the Anomalous Hall Effect. The Hall motions, characterized by a Casimir of the enlarged algebra, become mandatory for some critical value(s) of the magnetic field. The extension of our scheme yields the semiclassical effective model of the Bloch electron.
