We obtain non-relativistic AdS4 X CP3 solutions with dynamical exponent 3 in type IIA string theory, both with and without Romans mass. The compactifications to four dimensions are found to describe Proca fields in anti-de Sitter spacetime. This leads us to conclude that the massive and massless IIA theories should be identified in four dimensions and the Romans mass should be identified with the `flux' along CP3 in a definite manner. From supergravity point of view, it is suggestive of some four-dimensional symmetry that rotates Romans mass into the flux along CP3. We also provide M-theory Galilean ABJM background which gives rise to the nonrelativistic type IIA solution.
The Romans type IIA theory is the only known example of 10-dimensional maximal supergravity where (tensor) fields are explicitly massive. We provide an example of a non-relativistic anti-de Sitter $NRadS_4\times S^6$ background as a solution in massive type IIA. A compactification of which on $S^6$ gives immediately the prototype NRadS background in D=4 which is proposed to be dual to `cold atoms' or unitary fermions on a wire.
We construct the type IIA Green-Schwarz superstring action on a ten-dimensional IIA plane wave background with 24 supersymmetries keeping the full 32 fermionic coordinates. Starting from the symmetry superalgebra for the maximally supersymmetric eleven dimensional plane wave background, we obtain the eleven dimensional superfields. The Kaluza-Klein reduction leads to the ten dimensional superfields for the IIA plane wave background, from which the type IIA superstring action is constructed. We show that the superstring action reduces correctly to the previously known light-cone gauge fixed act…
We find new type II backgrounds with non-relativistic symmetries via non-Abelian T-duality. First we consider geometries with Galilean symmetries in type IIA, which have been identified as non-relativistic generalizations of the ABJM background and massive IIA supergravities. We then consider the non-Abelian T-duality transformation on the backgrounds with Lifshitz symmetry constructed by Donos and Gauntlett. Using gauge/gravity duality we study aspects of the field theory dual to these backgrounds.
We study type IIA superstring theory on a PP-wave background with 24 supercharges. This model can exactly be solved and then quantized. The open string in this PP-wave background is also studied. We observe that the theory has supersymmetric Dp-branes for p=2,4,6,8.
We present a family of N=1 supersymmetric backgrounds in type-IIA supergravity and their lifts to eleven-dimensional supergravity. These are of the form $AdS_5 \times X^5$ and are characterised by an $SU(2)$ structure. The internal space, $X^5$, is obtained from the known Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, $Y^{p,q}$, via an application of non-Abelian T-duality.
We study the low-lying excitations of Type IIA superstring theory in a plane wave background with 24 supersymmetries. In the light-cone gauge, the superstring action has ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetry and is exactly solvable, since it is quadratic in superstring coordinates. We obtain explicitly the spectrum of the Type IIA supergravity fluctuation modes in the plane wave background and give its correspondence with the spectrum of string states from the zero-mode sector of the light-cone superstring Hamiltonian.
We describe brane configurations that interpolate between the N=6 AdS4xCP3 background of Type IIA supergravity and the N=0 AdS4xCP3 background of massive Type IIA supergravity. Using the T-dual Type IIB configurations we prove that this leads to unequal Chern-Simons levels in the dual gauge theory, and find the precise relation between the parameters of the gauge theory and the RR fluxes of the background. This provides further evidence for the conjecture of Gaiotto and Tomasiello about the CFT dual of the massive Type IIA background.
We work out boundary states for Type IIA string theory on a plane wave background. By directly utilizing the channel duality, the induced conditions from the open string boundary conditions are imposed on the boundary states. The resulting boundary states correctly reproduce the partition functions of the open string theory for $DpDp$ and $DpD\bar{p}$ cases where $Dp$ branes are half BPS brane if located at the origin of the plane wave background.
We construct the effective action of the KK-monopole in a massive Type IIA background. We follow two approaches. First we construct a massive M-theory KK-monopole from which the IIA monopole is obtained by double dimensional reduction. This eleven dimensional monopole contains two isometries: one under translations of the Taub-NUT coordinate and the other under massive transformations of the embedding coordinates. Secondly, we construct the massive T-duality rules that map the Type IIB NS-5-brane onto the massive Type IIA KK-monopole. This provides a check of the action constructed from eleven…
We work out boundary conditions for the covariant open string in the type IIA plane wave background, which corresponds to the D-branes in the type IIA theory. We use the kappa symmetric string action and see what kind of boundary conditions should be imposed to retain kappa symmetry. We find half BPS as well as quarter BPS branes and the analysis agrees with the previous work in the light cone gauge if the result is available. Finally we find that D0-brane is non-supersymmetric.
We present a new Type IIB supergravity background of the warped form AdS$_4\times \mathcal{M}_6$ with dilaton, $B$-field and all Ramond-Ramond fluxes turned on. We obtain the solution by applying non-Abelian T-duality to a certain representative of a class of AdS$_4$ backgrounds in massive IIA supergravity. By explicitly constructing the Killing spinor of the seed solution and using an argument involving Kosmann spinorial Lie derivative we demonstrate that the background is supersymmetric.
We derive the spacetime superalgebras explicitly from ``test'' p-brane actions in a D-8-brane (i.e. a massive IIA) background to the lowest order in $θ$ via canonical formalism, and show that the forms of the superalgebras are the same as those in all the other D-brane (i.e. massless IIA) backgrounds, that is, they are indifferent to the presence of the Chern-Simons terms which are proportional to the mass and added to the D-brane actions in the case of massive IIA backgrounds. Thus, we can say that all the D-brane background solutions including a D-8-brane are on equal footing from the viewpo…
In the previous paper, the authors pointed out correspondence of a supersymmetric double-well matrix model with two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory on a nontrivial Ramond-Ramond background from the viewpoint of symmetries and spectrum. In this paper we further investigate the correspondence from dynamical aspects by comparing scattering amplitudes in the matrix model and those in the type IIA theory. In the latter, cocycle factors are introduced to vertex operators in order to reproduce correct transformation laws and target-space statistics. By a perturbative treatment of the Ramond-R…
We examine giant gravitons with a worldvolume magnetic flux $q$ in type IIA pp-wave background and find that they can move away from the origin along $x^4$ direction in target space satisfying $Rx^4=-q$. This nontrivial relation can be regarded as a complementary relation of the giant graviton on IIA pp-wave and is shown to be connected to the spacetime uncertainty principle. The giant graviton is also investigated in a system of N D0-branes as a fuzzy sphere solution. It is observed that $x^4$ enters into the fuzzy algebra as a deformation parameter. Such a background dependent Myers effect g…
In this paper we construct and examine new supersymmetric solutions of massive IIA supergravity that are obtained using non-Abelian T-duality applied to the Baryonic Branch of the Klebanov-Strassler background. The geometries display SU(2) structure which we show flows from static in the UV to dynamical in the IR. Confinement and symmetry breaking are given a geometrical interpretation by this change of structure. Various field theory observables are studied, suggesting possible ways to break conformality and flow in $N=1$ $T_N$ and related field theories.
We construct Schroedinger-like solutions of the Vasiliev higher spin theory in D>3 dimension. Symmetries of such solutions and the linearised equation of motion for the scalar on such backgrounds are analysed. We further propose Galilean invariant bosonic and fermionic field theories that could be dual to the two parity invariant higher spin theories on the Schroedinger-like background respectively. The discussion is phrased mainly in D=4 dimension, while similar constructions follow straightforwardly in higher dimensions.
In this paper we consider the non-Abelian T-dual geometry of the type $IIB$ supergravity theory on $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ background along a convenient $SU(2)$ subgroup of the $SO(4)$ R-symmetry. We examine various null geodesics of the resulting massive type $IIA$ supergravity theory and investigate the Penrose limits along these geodesics. We find that one of the resulting backgrounds admits pp-wave geometry in the neighbourhood of a suitable null geodesic. We carry out the supersymmetry analysis of the resulting pp-wave geometry and observe that it preserves sixteen supercharges. Furth…
We construct IIA GS superstring action on the ten-dimensional pp-wave background, which arises as the compactification of eleven-dimensional pp-wave geometry along the isometry direction. The background geometry has 24 Killing spinors and among them, 16 components correspond to the non-linearly realized kinematical supersymmetry in the string action. The remaining eight components are linearly realized and shown to be independent of x^+ coordinate, which is identified with the world-sheet time coordinate of the string action in the light-cone gauge. The resultant dynamical N=(4,4) supersymmetr…
We study four-dimensional heterotic flux vacua with N=2 spacetime supersymmetry. A worldsheet perspective is used to clarify quantization conditions associated to the fluxes and the constraints these place on the moduli spaces of resulting compactifications. We propose that these vacua fit naturally in the context of heterotic/IIA duality as heterotic duals to compactifications on K3-fibered but not elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau three-folds. We present some examples of such potential dual pairs.
In this note, we construct a Wess-Zumino-Witten model based on the Galilean conformal algebra in 2-spacetime dimensions, which is a nonrelativistic analogue of the relativistic conformal algebra. We obtain exact background corresponding to σ-models in six dimensions (the dimension of the group manifold) and a central charge c=6. We carry out a Sugawara type construction to verify the conformal invariance of the model. Further, we discuss the feasibility of the background obtained as a physical spacetime metric.
Looking for string vacua with fixed moduli, we study compactifications of type IIA string theory on Calabi-Yau fourfolds in the presence of generic Ramond-Ramond fields. We explicitly derive the (super)potential induced by Ramond-Ramond fluxes performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction of the ten-dimensional effective action. This can be conveniently achieved in a formulation of the massive type IIA supergravity where all Ramond-Ramond fields appear in a democratic way. The result agrees with the general formula for the superpotential written in terms of calibrations. We further notice that for gener…
We apply the methods of DeWolfe et al. [hep-th/0505160] to a T^6/Z_4 orientifold model. This is the first step in an attempt to build a phenomenologically interesting meta-stable de Sitter model with small cosmological constant and standard model gauge groups.
We compute the D-brane tensions in the type IIA plane-wave background by comparing the interaction potential between widely separated D-branes in string theory with the supergravity mode exchange between the D-branes. We found that the D-brane tensions and RR charges in the plane-wave background are the same as those in the flat space. Also we work out the stringy halo behavior of the $DpD\bar{p}$ spacelike branes and find the explicit dependence on the light cone separation $r^+$. This suggests that the detailed tachyon dynamics for the spacelike $DpD\bar{p}$ branes are different from those i…
IIA supergravity backgrounds preserving one supersymmetry locally admit four types of Killing spinors distinguished by the orbits of $Spin(9,1)$ on the space of spinors. We solve the Killing spinor equations of IIA supergravity with and without cosmological constant for Killing spinors representing two of these orbits, with isotropy groups $Spin(7)$ and $Spin(7)\ltimes\mathbb{R}^8$. In both cases, we identify the geometry of spacetime and express the fluxes in terms of the geometry. We find that the geometric constraints of backgrounds with a $Spin(7)\ltimes\mathbb{R}^8$ invariant Killing spin…
In this paper we study K3 compactification of ten-dimensional massive type IIA theory with all possible Ramond-Ramond background fluxes turned on. The resulting six-dimensional theory is a new massive (gauged) supergravity with an action that is manifestly invariant under an O(4,20) / (O(4) times O(20)) duality symmetry. We discover that this six-dimensional theory interpolates between vacua of ten-dimensional massive IIA supergravity and vacua of massless IIA supergravity with appropriate background fluxes turned on. This in turn suggests a new 11-dimensional interpretation for the massive ty…
We derive the Free Differential Algebra for type IIA supergravity in 10 dimensions in the string frame. We provide all fermionic terms for all curvatures. We derive the Green-Schwarz sigma model for type IIA superstring based on the FDA construction and we check its invariance under kappa-symmetry. Finally, we derive the pure spinor sigma model and we check the BRST invariance. The present derivation has the advantage that the resulting sigma model is constructed in terms of the superfields appearing in the FDA and therefore one can directly relate a supergravity background with the correspond…
We find that (massive) IIA backgrounds that admit a $G_2\ltimes \mathbb{R}^8$ invariant Killing spinor must exhibit a null Killing vector field which leaves the Killing spinor invariant and that the rotation of the Killing vector field satisfies a certain $\mathfrak{g}_2$ instanton condition. This result together with those in [4] and [5] complete the classification of geometries of all (massive) IIA backgrounds that preserve one supersymmetry. We also explore the geometry of a class of backgrounds which admit a $G_2\ltimes \mathbb{R}^8$ invariant Killing spinor and where in addition an approp…
We study various aspects of N=(4,4) type IIA GS superstring theory in the pp-wave background, which arises as the compactification of maximally supersymmetric eleven-dimensional pp-wave geometry along the spacelike isometry direction. We show the supersymmetry algebra of N=(4,4) worldsheet supersymmetry as well as non-linearly realized supersymmetry. We also give quantization of closed string and open string incorporating various boundary conditions. From the open string boundary conditions, we find configurations of D-branes which preserve half the supersymmetries. Among these we identify D4 …
An effective U(1) gauge invariant theory is constructed for a non-commutative Schrodinger field coupled to a background U(1)_{\star} gauge field in 2+1-dimensions using first order Seiberg-Witten map. We show that this effective theory can be cast in the form of usual Schrodinger action with interaction terms of noncommutative origin provided the gauge field is of ``background'' type with constant magnetic field. The Galilean symmetry is investigated and a violation is found in the boost sector. We also consider the problem of Hall conductivity in this framework.
Spin Matrix theory (SMT) limits provide a way to capture the dynamics of the AdS/CFT correspondence near BPS bounds. On the string theory side, these limits result in non-relativistic sigma models that can be interpreted as novel non-relativistic strings. This SMT string theory couples to non-relativistic $U(1)$-Galilean background geometries. In this paper, we explore the relation between pp-wave backgrounds obtained from Penrose limits of AdS${}_5 \times S^5$, and a new type of $U(1)$-Galilean backgrounds that we call flat-fluxed (FF) backgrounds. These FF backgrounds are the simplest possib…
We investigate the effective theory of type IIA string theory on six-dimensional orientifold backgrounds with SU(2)-structure. We focus on the case of orientifolds with O6-planes, for which we compute the bosonic effective action in the supergravity approximation. For a generic SU(2)-structure background, we find that the low-energy effective theory is a gauged N=2 supergravity where moduli in both vector and hypermultiplets are charged. Since all these supergravities descend from a corresponding N=4 background, their scalar target space is always a quotient of a SU(1,1)/U(1) x SO(6,n)/SO(6)xS…
The kappa--invariant worldvolume action for the NS5--brane in a D=10 type IIA supergravity background is obtained by carrying out the dimensional reduction of the M5--brane action.
We show that the observational universe may emerge classically from a de Sitter background with low energy scale. We find, after calculating the curvature perturbation, that the resulting scenario is actually a style of the eternal inflation scenario, in which some regions will go through the slowly expanding Galilean genesis phase with the rapidly increasing energy density and become island universes, while other regions are still eternally inflating, which will make the room for more island universes to emerge.
We study type IIA string theories on the pp-waves with 24 supercharges. The type IIA pp-wave backgrounds are derived from the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave solution in eleven dimensions through the toroidal compactification on the spatial isometry directions. The associated actions of type IIA strings are obtained by using these metrics and other background fields of the type IIA supergravities on the one hand. On the other hand, we derive these theories from D=11 supermembrane on the pp-wave via double dimensional reduction for the spatial isometry directions. The resulting actions agree w…
We investigate whether 4-dimensional static and cosmological Lifshitz solutions can be found from deforming the existing (A)dS_4 compactifications in IIA and IIA* supergravity. Using a well motivated compactification Ansatz on SU(3)-structure manifolds with 19 undetermined parameters we demonstrate that this is not the case in ordinary IIA supergravity, thereby generalising previous nogo results in different ways. On the other hand, for IIA* we construct explicit cosmological Lifshitz solutions. We also consider solutions with non-constant scalars and are able to find simple static and cosmolo…
We propose a candidate for the dual (in the weak/strong coupling sense) of the six-dimensional heterotic string compactification constructed recently by Chaudhuri, Hockney and Lykken. It is a type IIA string theory compactified on an orbifold $K3/Z_2$, where the $Z_2$ action involves an involution of $K3$ with fixed points, and also has an embedding in the U(1) gauge group associated with the Ramond-Ramond sector of the type IIA string theory. This introduces flux of the U(1) gauge field concentrated at the orbifold points. This construction provides an explicit example where the dual of a sup…
The N=1 effective action for generic type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds in the presence of background fluxes is computed from a Kaluza-Klein reduction. The Kahler potential, the gauge kinetic functions and the flux-induced superpotential are determined in terms of geometrical data of the Calabi-Yau orientifold and the background fluxes. The moduli space is found to be a Kahler subspace of the N=2 moduli space and shown to coincide with the moduli space arising in compactification of M-theory on a specific class of G_2 manifolds. The superpotential depends on all geometrical moduli and vanishes a…
We study type IIA string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau fourfolds and heterotic string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds times a two-torus. We derive the resulting effective theories which have two space-time dimensions and preserve four supercharges. The duality between such vacua is established at the level of the effective theory. For type IIA vacua with non-trivial Ramond-Ramond background fluxes a superpotential is generated. We show that for a specific choice of background fluxes and a fourfold which has the structure of a threefold fibred over a sphere the superpotential c…
We demonstrate that flux compactifications of type IIA string theory can classically stabilize all geometric moduli. For a particular orientifold background, we explicitly construct an infinite family of supersymmetric vacua with all moduli stabilized at arbitrarily large volume, weak coupling, and small negative cosmological constant. We obtain these solutions from both ten-dimensional and four-dimensional perspectives. For more general backgrounds, we study the equations for supersymmetric vacua coming from the effective superpotential and show that all geometric moduli can be stabilized by …
We provide explicit solutions of Type IIA supergravity which are believed to be dual to N = 2 superconformal four dimensional gauge theories. These explicit solutions are based on the general ansatz for such a type of backgrounds introduced by Gaiotto and Maldacena.
Recently, Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena proposed that the N=6 Chern-Simons gauge theories are holographically dual to the M-theory backgrounds with multiple M2-branes on orbifolds C^4/Z_k. When k is large, they have the type IIA string description. In this paper we analyze the Penrose limit of this IIA background and express the string spectrum as the conformal dimensions of operators in the gauge theories. For BPS operators, we can confirm the agreements between the IIA string on plane waves and the gauge theories. We point out that there exist BMN-like operators in the gauge theor…
We give the full supersymmetric and kappa-symmetric actions for the Dirichlet p-branes, including their coupling to background superfields of ten-dimensional type IIA and IIB supergravity.
We study the tachyon supertube probes in a type IIA supergravity background which is a stringy-like Gödel spacetime and contains closed timelike curve. In the case of small value of $f$, which is a parameter of the background, we use the Minahan-Zwiebach tachyon action to obtain a single regular tube solution and argue that the tube is a BPS D2-brane. However, we find that the fluctuation around the tube configuration has a negative-energy mode. This means that the tachyon supertube, despite being a BPS configuration, develops an instability in the pathological spacetime with closed timelike c…
We consider warped $\mathrm{AdS}_2\times \mathcal M_4$ backgrounds within $F(4)$ gauged supergravity in six dimensions. In particular, we are able to find supersymmetric solutions of the aforementioned type characterized by $\textrm{AdS}_{6}$ asymptotics and an $\mathcal M_4$ given by a three-sphere warped over a segment. Subsequently, we provide the 10D uplift of the solutions to massive type IIA supergravity, where the geometry is $\mathrm{AdS}_2\times S^{3}\times\tilde{S}^3$ warped over a strip. Finally we construct the brane intersection underlying one of these supergravity backgrounds. Th…
The explicit form of the fermionic zero-modes in the fivebrane backgrounds of type IIA and IIB supergravity theories is investigated. In type IIA fivebrane background there are four zero-modes of gravitinos and dilatinos. In type IIB fivebrane background four zero-modes of dilatinos and no zero-modes of gravitinos are found. These zero-modes indicate the four-fermion condensates which have been suggested in a calculation of the tension of the D-brane in fivebrane backgrounds.
We derive a component-field expansion of the Green-Schwarz action for the type IIA string, in an arbitrary background of massless NS-NS and R-R bosonic fields, up to quadratic order in the fermionic coordinates θ. Using this action, we extend the usual derivation of Buscher T-duality rules to include not only NS-NS, but also R-R fields. Our implementation of the T-duality transformation rules makes use of adapted background-field parametrizations, which provide a more geometrically natural and elegant description for the duality maps than the ones previously presented. These T-duality rules al…
In this paper we study a possible non-perturbative dual of the heterotic string compactified on K3 x T^2 in the presence of background fluxes. We show that type IIA string theory compactified on manifolds with SU(3) structure can account for a subset of the possible heterotic fluxes. This extends our previous analysis to a case of a non-perturbative duality with fluxes.
We find explicit AdS4 solutions of massive type IIA with N=2 supersymmetry obtained deforming with a Roman mass the type IIA supersymmetric reduction of the M theory background AdS4 times M111. The family of solutions have SU(3) times SU(3) structure and isometry SU(3) times U(1)^2. They are conjectured to be dual to three-dimensional N=2 Chern-Simons theories with generic Chern-Simons couplings and gauge group ranks.
We construct effective field theories for gapped quantum Hall systems coupled to background geometries with local Galilean invariance i.e. Bargmann spacetimes. Along with an electromagnetic field, these backgrounds include the effects of curved Galilean spacetimes, including torsion and a gravitational field, allowing us to study charge, energy, stress and mass currents within a unified framework. A shift symmetry specific to single constituent theories constraints the effective action to couple to an effective background gauge field and spin connection that is solved for by a self-consistent …
Type IIB toroidal orientifolds are among the earliest examples of flux vacua. By applying T-duality, we construct the first examples of massive IIA flux vacua with Minkowski space-times, along with new examples of type IIA flux vacua. The backgrounds are surprisingly simple with no four-form flux at all. They serve as illustrations of the ingredients needed to build type IIA and massive IIA solutions with scale separation. To check that these backgrounds are actually solutions, we formulate the complete set of type II supergravity equations of motion in a very useful form that treats the R-R f…
We consider backgrounds of (massive) IIA supergravity of the form of a warped product $M_{1,3}\times_ω X_6$, where $X_6$ is a six-dimensional compact manifold and $M_{1,3}$ is $AdS_4$ or a four-dimensional Minkowski space. We analyse conditions for $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry on manifolds of SU(2) structure. We prove the absence of solutions in certain cases.
We examine T-duality transformations for supersymmetric strings with target space geometry with compact abelian isometries. We consider the partition function of these models and we show that although T-duality is not a symmetry, due to an anomaly, it relates type IIA to type IIB strings. In this way we extend the corresponding result for toroidal compactification to the general case of non-trivial backgrounds with abelian isometries and for world sheets of any genera.
We summarize the results and the ideas in 1707.06152, 1707.06154, 1807.07768 where new warped $\mathrm{AdS}_3$ backgrounds are derived in massive IIA string theory by uplifting exact solutions in $\mathcal N=1$, $d=7$ and $\mathcal N=(1,1)$, $d=6$ gauged supergravities. These solutions are respectively asymptotically $\mathrm{AdS}_7$ and $\mathrm{AdS}_6$ and they are related to the D2-D4-NS5-D6-D8 brane intersection. We provide a particular supergravity solution in 10d describing this bound state and we discuss the relations between its near-horizon geometry and the uplifts from 6d and 7d. The…
Building on our recent results on dynamic SU(3)xSU(3) structures we present a set of sufficient conditions for supersymmetric AdS4xM6 backgrounds of type IIA/IIB supergravity. These conditions ensure that the background solves, besides the supersymmetry equations, all the equations of motion of type II supergravity. The conditions state that the internal manifold is locally a codimension-one foliation such that the five dimensional leaves admit a Sasaki-Einstein structure. In type IIA the supersymmetry is N=2, and the total six-dimensional internal space is locally an S^2 bundle over a four-di…
We study slow-roll accelerating cosmologies arising from geometric compactifications of type IIA string theory on $T^{6}/(\mathbb{Z}_{2}\,\times\,\mathbb{Z}_{2})$. With the aid of a genetic algorithm, we are able to find quasi-de Sitter backgrounds with both slow-roll parameters of order $0.1$. Furthermore, we study their evolution by numerically solving the corresponding time-dependent equations of motion, and we show that they actually display a few e-folds of accelerated expansion. Finally, we comment on their perturbative reliability.
