Recently, gravity duals for certain Galilean-invariant conformal field theories have been constructed. In this paper, we point out that the spectrum of the particle number operator in the examples found so far is not a necessary consequence of the existence of a gravity dual. We record some progress towards more realistic spectra. In particular, we construct bulk systems with asymptotic Schrodinger symmetry and only one extra dimension. In examples, we find solutions which describe these Schrodinger-symmetric systems at finite density. A lift to M-theory is used to resolve a curvature singularity. As a happy byproduct of this analysis, we realize a state which could be called a holographic Mott insulator.
We exhibit a nonrelativistic ideal gas with a Kaluza-Klein tower of species, featuring a singular behavior of thermodynamic functions at zero chemical potential. In this way, we provide a qualitative match to the thermodynamics of recently found black holes in backgrounds with asymptotic nonrelativistic conformal symmetry.
We obtain the reflected entropy for bipartite states in a class of $(1+1)$-dimensional Galilean conformal field theories ($GCFT_{1+1}$) through a replica technique. Furthermore we compare our results with the entanglement wedge cross section (EWCS) obtained for the dual (2+1) dimensional asymptotically flat geometries in the context of flat holography. We find that our results are consistent with the duality between the reflected entropy and the bulk EWCS for flat holographic scenarios.
We construct Schroedinger-like solutions of the Vasiliev higher spin theory in D>3 dimension. Symmetries of such solutions and the linearised equation of motion for the scalar on such backgrounds are analysed. We further propose Galilean invariant bosonic and fermionic field theories that could be dual to the two parity invariant higher spin theories on the Schroedinger-like background respectively. The discussion is phrased mainly in D=4 dimension, while similar constructions follow straightforwardly in higher dimensions.
The odd entanglement entropy (OEE) for bipartite states in a class of $(1+1)$-dimensional Galilean conformal field theories ($GCFT_{1+1}$) is obtained through an appropriate replica technique. In this context our results are compared with the entanglement wedge cross section (EWCS) for $(2+1)$-dimensional asymptotically flat geometries dual to the $GCFT_{1+1}$ in the framework of flat holography. We find that our results are consistent with the duality of the difference between the odd entanglement entropy and the entanglement entropy of bipartite states, with the bulk EWCS for flat holographi…
We present the analytical calculation of entanglement entropy for a class of two dimensional field theories governed by the symmetries of the Galilean conformal algebra, thus providing a rare example of such an exact computation. These field theories are the putative holographic duals to theories of gravity in three-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes. We provide a check of our field theory answers by an analysis of geodesics. We also exploit the Chern-Simons formulation of three-dimensional gravity and adapt recent proposals of calculating entanglement entropy by Wilson lines in this c…
We embed a holographic description of a quantum field theory with Galilean conformal invariance in string theory. The key observation is that such field theories may be realized as conventional superconformal field theories with a known string theory embedding, twisted by the R-symmetry in a light-like direction. Using the Null Melvin Twist, we construct the appropriate dual geometry and its non-extremal generalization. From the nonzero temperature solution we determine the equation of state. We also discuss the hydrodynamic regime of these non-relativistic plasmas and show that the shear visc…
We introduce a prescription to compute the entanglement entropy of Galilean conformal field theories by combining gravitational anomalies and an İnönü-Wigner contraction. We find that our expression for the entanglement entropy in the thermal limit reproduces the Cardy formula for Galilean conformal field theories. Using this proposal, we calculate the entanglement entropy for a class of Galilean conformal field theories, which are believed to be dual to three-dimensional flat-space cosmological solutions. These geometries describe expanding (contracting) universes and can be viewed as the fla…
We advance holographic constructions for the entanglement negativity of bipartite states in a class of $(1+1)-$dimensional Galilean conformal field theories dual to asymptotically flat three dimensional bulk geometries described by Einstein Gravity and Topologically Massive Gravity. The construction involves specific algebraic sums of the lengths of bulk extremal curves homologous to certain combinations of the intervals appropriate to such bipartite states. Our analysis exactly reproduces the corresponding replica technique results in the large central charge limit. We substantiate our constr…
We advance a construction for the balanced partial entanglement entropy (BPE) for bipartite mixed states in a class of $(1+1)$-dimensional Galilean conformal field theories dual to Einstein gravity and topologically massive gravity in asymptotically flat spacetimes. We compare our results with the entanglement wedge cross section (EWCS) in the dual geometries and find exact agreement. Furthermore, utilizing a geometric picture, we demonstrate the holographic duality between the EWCS and the BPE in the context of flat holography.
We provide a framework for non-relativistic holography so that a covariant action principle ensuring the Galilean symmetry for dual conformal field theory is given. This framework is based on the Bargmann lift of the Newton-Cartan gravity to the one-dimensional higher Einstein gravity, or reversely, the null-like Kaluza-Klein reduction. We reproduce the previous zero temperature results, and our framework provides a natural explanation about why the holography is co-dimension 2. We then construct the black hole solution dual to the thermal CFT, and find the horizon is curvature singular. Howev…
Aging phenomena are examples of `non-equilibrium criticality' and can be exemplified by systems with Galilean and scaling symmetries but no time translation invariance. We realize aging holographically using a deformation of a non-relativistic version of gauge/gravity duality. Correlation functions of scalar operators are computed using holographic real-time techniques, and agree with field theory expectations. At least in this setup, general aging phenomena are reproduced holographically by complexifying the bulk space-time geometry, even in Lorentzian signature.
We establish a construction for the entanglement wedge in asymptotically flat bulk geometries for subsystems in dual $(1+1)$-dimensional Galilean conformal field theories in the context of flat space holography. In this connection we propose a definition for the bulk entanglement wedge cross section for bipartite states of such dual non relativistic conformal field theories. Utilizing our construction for the entanglement wedge cross section we compute the entanglement negativity for such bipartite states through the generalization of an earlier proposal, in the context of the usual $AdS/CFT$ …
We study the space-time symmetries of the actions obtained by expanding the action for a massive free relativistic particle around the Galilean action. We obtain all the point space-time symmetries of the post-Galilean actions by working in canonical space. We also construct an infinite collection of generalized Schrödinger algebras parameterized by an integer $M$, with $M=0$ corresponding to the standard Schrödinger algebra. We discuss the Schrödinger equations associated to these algebras, their solutions and projective phases.
It is often said that interactions destroy the particle nature of excitations. We report that, in holographic theory adding interaction term can create a new quasi particle spectrum, on the contrary. We show this by calculating the optical conductivity in a model with exact background solution and finding a new quasi-particle spectrum. We argue that such new poles are generic consequence of any non-minimal interaction like Chern-Simon term. The interaction driven metal-insulator transition and the pinning effect in holography are examples of this phenomena. We also point out that the origin of…
We provide a first derivation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of 3d flat cosmological horizons in terms of the counting of states in a dual field theory. These horizons appear in the shifted-boost orbifold of R^{1,2}, the flat limit of non-extremal rotating BTZ black holes. These 3d geometries carry non-zero charges under the asymptotic symmetry algebra of R^{1,2}, the 3d Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS3) algebra. The dual theory has the symmetries of the 2d Galilean Conformal Algebra, a contraction of two copies of the Virasoro algebra, which is isomorphic to BMS3. We study flat holography as a li…
We consider Schrodinger equations for a non-relativistic particle obeying N+1-th order higher derivative classical equation of motion. These equations are invariant under N(odd)-extended Galilean conformal (NGC) algebras in general d+1 dimensions. In 2+1 dimensions, the exotic Schrodinger equations are invariant under N(even)-GCA.
Galilean transformation relates a physical system under mutually perpendicular uniform magnetic and electric fields to that under uniform magnetic field only. This allows a complete specification of quantum states in the former case in terms of those for the latter. Based on this observation, we consider the Hall effect and the behavior of a neutral composite system in the presence of uniform electromagnetic fields.
The non-relativistic version of the non commutative Field Theory, recently introduced by Lozano, Moreno and Schaposnik [1], is shown to admit the ``exotic'' Galilean symmetry found before for point particles.
We study free particle motion on homogeneous kinematical spacetimes of galilean type. The three well-known cases of Galilei and (A)dS--Galilei spacetimes are included in our analysis, but our focus will be on the previously unexplored torsional galilean spacetimes. We show how in well-chosen coordinates free particle motion becomes equivalent to the dynamics of a damped harmonic oscillator, with the damping set by the torsion. The realization of the kinematical symmetry algebra in terms of conserved charges is subtle and comes with some interesting surprises, such as a homothetic version of ha…
Strictly working in the framework of the nonrelativistic quantum mechanics of a spin 1/2 particle coupled to an external electromagnetic field, we show, by explicit construction, the existence of a charge conjugation operator matrix which defines the corresponding antiparticle wave function and leads to the galilean and gauge invariant Schroedinger-Pauli equation satisfied by it.
Conformal Galilei algebra contains so(1,2) subalgebra which is the conformal algebra in one dimension. In this note we generalize methods previously developed for one-dimensional many-body systems and construct a unitary map relating a quantum mechanics invariant under the conformal Galilean transformations to a set of decoupled particles for which the same symmetry is realized in a nonlocal way. Possible applications of the map are discussed.
We study the nonrelativistic limit of the $N=2$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons matter system. We show that in addition to Galilean invariance the model admits a set of symmetries generated by fermionic charges, which can be interpreted as an {\it extended Galilean supersymmetry }. The system also possesses a hidden conformal invariance and then the full group of symmetries is the {\it extended superconformal Galilean} group. We also show that imposing extended superconformal Galilean symmetry determines the values of the coupling constants in such a way that their values in the bosonic sector agr…
The Souriau massless Galilean particle of "colour" $k$ and spin $s$ is shown to be the Galilean limit of the Souriau tachyon of mass $m = ik$ and spin $s$. We compare and contrast this result with the recent Galilean limit of the Nambu-Goto string and the Green-Schwarz superstring.
The ``exotic'' particle model associated with the two-parameter central extension of the planar Galilei group can be used to derive the ground states of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. Similar equations arise for a semiclassical Bloch electron. Exotic Galilean symmetry is also be shared by Chern-Simons field theory of the Moyal type.
This is a critical review of inert properties of classical relativistic point objects. The objects are classified as Galilean and non-Galilean. Three types of non-Galilean objects are considered: spinning, rigid, and dressed particles. In the absence of external forces, such particles are capable of executing not only uniform motions along straight lines but also Zitterbewegungs, self-accelerations, self-decelerations, and uniformly accelerated motions. A free non-Galilean object possesses the four-velocity and the four-momentum which are in general not collinear, therefore, its inert properti…
The relation between the separability of a system of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field and Galilean symmetry is revisited using Duval's "Bargmann framework". If the charge-to-mass ratios of the particles are identical, $e_a/m_a=ε$ for all particles, then the Bargmann space of the magnetic system is isometric to that of an anisotropic harmonic oscillator. Assuming that the particles interact through a potential which only depends on their relative distances, the system splits into one representing the center of mass plus a decoupled internal part, and can be mapped further into an i…
After defining conformal Galilean-type algebras for arbitrary dynamical exponent $z$ we consider the particular cases of the conformal Galilei algebra (CGA) and the Schrödinger Lie algebra (sch). Galilei massless particles moving with arbitrary, finite velocity are introduced \begin{description} \item{i)} in $d=2$ as a realization of the centrally extended CGA in 6 dimensional phase space, \item{ii)} in arbitrary spatial dimension $d$ as a realization of the unextended \it{sch} in 4d dimensional phase space. \end{description} A particle system, minimally coupled to gravity, shows, besides Gali…
We show that the Lukierski et al. model, invariant with respect to the two-fold centrally extended Galilei group, can be decomposed into an infinite number of independent copies (differing in their spin) of the ``exotic'' particle of Duval et al. The difference between the two models is found to be sensitive to electromagnetic coupling. The nature of the noncommutative plane coordinates is discussed in the light of the exotic Galilean symmetry. We prove that the first model, interpreted as describing a non-relativistic anyon, is the non-relativistic limit of a particle with torsion related to …
A Galilean Chern-Simons field theory is formulated for the case of two interacting spin-1/2 fields of distinct masses M and M'. A method for the construction of states containing N particles of mass M and N' particles of mass M' is given which is subsequently used to display equivalence to the spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm effect in the N = N' =1 sector of the model. The latter is then studied in perturbation theory to determine whether there are divergences in the fourth order (one loop) diagram. It is found that the contribution of that order is finite (and vanishing) for the case of parallel spin …
We show that particle-hole pairing is realized in the background of a charged black hole in magnetic field. The pairing instability occurs for sufficiently large fermion charges, which correspond to the Fermi liquid regime. The critical temperature for Fermi liquids is proportinal to the magnetic field and vanishes as we approach the non-Fermi liquid state. The pairing order parameter leads to a relative shift of the Fermi surfaces corresponding to the bulk fermions with spin up and down. The value of the shift in Fermi momentum $k_F$ and the critical temperature $T_c$ are proportional to the …
We use 3d bosonization dualities to derive new non-supersymmetric dualities between bosonic quiver theories in $2+1$ dimensions. It is shown that such dualities are a natural non-Abelian generalization of the bosonic particle-vortex duality. A special case of such dualities is applicable to Chern-Simons theories living on interfaces in $3+1$ dimensional $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory across which the theta angle jumps. We also analyze such interfaces in a holographic construction which provides further evidence for novel dualities between quiver gauge theories and gauge theories with adjoint scalar…
In the context of asymptotically flat space-times, it has been suggested to label elementary particles as unitary irreducible representations of the BMS group. We analyse this idea in the spirit of the holographic principle advocating the use of this definition.
Some aspects of the "exotic" particle, associated with the two-parameter central extension of the planar Galilei group are reviewed. A fundamental property is that it has non-commuting position coordinates. Other and generalized non-commutative models are also discussed. Minimal as well as anomalous coupling to an external electromagnetic field is presented. Supersymmetric extension is also considered. Exotic Galilean symmetry is also found in Moyal field theory. Similar equations arise for a semiclassical Bloch electron, used to explain the anomalous/spin/optical Hall effects.
We analyze the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking of scale invariance in Galilean invariant field theories. We show that the existence of a dynamic gapless dilaton mode depends on whether the $U(1)$ particle number or the Galilean boost symmetry are spontaneously broken. When both scale and particle number symmetries are spontaneously broken there is one propagating gapless Nambu-Goldstone mode. Its dispersion relation is linear if the chemical potential is nonzero and quadratic otherwise. We discuss the reversibility of RG flows in such theories.
Galilean genesis is an alternative to inflation, in which the universe starts expanding from Minkowski with the stable violation of the null energy condition. In this paper, we discuss how the early universe is reheated through the gravitational particle production at the trasition from the genesis phase to the subsequent phase where the kinetic energy of the scalar field is dominant. We then study the consequences of gravitational reheating after Galilean genesis on the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves. The resultant spectrum is strongly blue, and at high frequencies $Ω_{\rm gw}\pro…
The ``exotic'' particle model with non-commuting position coordinates, associated with the two-parameter central extension of the planar Galilei group, can be used to derive the ground states of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. The relation to other NC models is discussed. Anomalous coupling is presented. Similar equations arise for a semiclassical Bloch electron, used to explain the anomalous/spin/optical Hall effects.
We consider U(1) gauge fields in a slice of AdS_5 with bulk and boundary mass parameters. The zero mode of a bulk U(1) gauge field can be localized either on the UV or IR brane. This leads to a simple model of millicharged particles in which fermions can have arbitrarily small electric charge. In the electroweak sector we also discuss phenomenological implications of a localized U(1)_Y gauge boson. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we present the 4D holographic interpretation of the 5D model. In particular the photon is shown to be a composite particle when localized near the IR brane, whereas …
We construct the holographic dual theory of unparticles. The Randall-Sundrum type hard wall model is shown to produce deconstructing particles, whose spectrum has a finite mass gap proportional to the inverse of the fifth direction segment. The introduction of new scale corresponds to setting a brane in ${\rm AdS}_5$. The broken conformal symmetry due to this brane is restored when it is moved to infinity. Unparticles then emerge as an infinite tower of massless particles.
In this paper we generalize the idea of species holography to the case of Cascading DGP theories. Essence of the phenomenon is that a 4D field theory with N particle species coupled to a high-dimensional bulk gravity propagating solely a graviton becomes strongly coupled at the scale that would be the quantum gravity scale of the bulk theory if all the species were propagating in the bulk. We will see that both, crossover scales and Vainshtein scales, can be understood as holographic scales in the above sense. We confirm our results by an explicit effective field theoretic derivation of these …
Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) was obtained in string theory and quantum gravity and suggested the existence of a fundamental minimal length which, as was established, can be obtained within the deformed Heisenberg algebra. We use the deformed commutation relations or in classical case (studied in this paper) the deformed Poisson brackets, which are invariant with respect to the translation in configurational space. We have found transformations relating coordinates and times of moving and rest frames of reference in the space with GUP in the first order over parameter of deformation.…

In the background of a charged AdS black hole, we consider a Dirac particle endowed with an arbitrary magnetic dipole moment. For non-zero charge and dipole coupling of the bulk fermion, we find that the dual boundary theory can be plagued with superluminal modes. Requiring consistency of the dual CFT amounts to constraining the strength of the dipole coupling by an upper bound. We briefly discuss the implications of our results for the physics of holographic non-Fermi liquids.
I generalize classical gravity/quantum gauge theory duality in AdS/CFT correspondence to (1+1)-dimensional non-relativistic quantum mechanical system. It is shown that (1+1)-dimensional non-relativistic quantum mechanical system can be reproduced from holographic projection of (2+1)-dimension classical gravity at semiclassical limit. In this explanation every quantum path in 2-dimension corresponds to a classical path of 3-dimension gravity under definite holographic projection. I consider free particle and harmonic oscillator as two examples and find their dual gravity description.
We review the extrapolation of the single-particle string spectrum on AdS(5)xS(5) to the Higher Spin enhancement point and the successful comparison of the resulting spectrum with the one of single-trace gauge-invariant operators in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We also describe how to decompose the common spectrum in terms of massless and massive representations of the relevant Higher Spin symmetry group. Based on the lecture delivered by M. Bianchi at the First Solvay Conference on Higher-Spin Gauge Theories held in Bruxelles, on May 12-14, 2004.
Many non-relativistic Quantum Field Theories with conserved particle number share a common set of symmetries: time dependent spatial diffeomorphisms acting on the background metric and U(1) invariance acting on the background fields which couple to particle number. Here we use these symmetries to deduce a gravity dual for any such theory in terms of a non-relativistic theory of gravity, a variant of Horava gravity. This duality allows the extension of holography to generic non-relativistic field theories. As Horava gravity is presumed to be a consistent quantum theory, this duality also allows…
We define a class of space-times that we call asymptotically locally Schroedinger space-times. We consider these space-times in 3 dimensions, in which case they are also known as null warped AdS. The boundary conditions are formulated in terms of a specific frame field decomposition of the metric which contains two parts: an asymptotically locally AdS metric and a product of a lightlike frame field with itself. Asymptotically we say that the lightlike frame field is proportional to the particle number generator N regardless of whether N is an asymptotic Killing vector or not. We consider 3-dim…
We study the Schwinger pair production in confining theories. The production rate in an external electric field E is numerically evaluated by using the holographic description. There exist two kinds of critical values of the electric field, i) E=E_c, above which there is no potential barrier and particles are freely generated, ii) E=E_s, below which the confining string tension dominates the electric field and the pair production does not occur. We argue the universal exponents associated with the critical behaviors.
We consider gauge/gravity correspondence between maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in ($p+1$) dimensions and superstring theory on the near-horizon limit of the D$p$-brane solution. The string-frame metric is AdS$_{p+1}\times S^{8-p}$ times a Weyl factor, and there is no conformal symmetry except for $p=3$. In a previous paper by one of the present authors, the free-field result of gauge theory has been reproduced from string theory for a particular operator which has angular momentum along $S^{8-p}$. In this paper, we extend this result to operators which have angular momenta along A…
We find and study the gravity duals of the supersymmetric vacua of N=6 mass-deformed Chern-Simons-matter theory for M2-branes. The classical solution extends that of Lin, Lunin and Maldacena by introducing a Z_k quotient and discrete torsions. The gravity vacua perfectly map to the recently identified supersymmetric field theory vacua. We calculate the masses of BPS charged particles in the weakly coupled field theory, which agree with the classical open membrane analysis when both calculations are reliable. We also comment on how non-relativistic conformal symmetry is realized in our gravity …
Relevant physical models are described by singular Lagrangians, so that their Hamiltonian description is based on the Dirac theory of constraints. The qualitative aspects of this theory are now understood, in particular the role of the Shanmugadhasan canonical transformation in the determination of a canonical basis of Dirac's observables allowing the elimination of gauge degrees of freedom from the classical description of physical systems. This programme was initiated by Dirac for the electromagnetic field with charged fermions. Now Dirac's observables for Yang-Mills theory with fermions (wh…
We describe the twisted space-time symmetries which imply the quantum Poincaré covariance of noncommutative Minkowski spaces, with constant, Lie algebraic and quadratic commutators. Further we present the relativistic and nonrelativistic particle models invariant respectively under twisted relativistic and twisted Galilean symmetries.
Employing the world line spinning particle picture we discuss the appearance of several different `gauges' which we use to gain a deeper explanation of the Collective/Gravity identification. We discuss transformations and algebraic equivalences between them. For a bulk identification we develop a `gauge independent' representation where all gauge constraints are eliminated. This `gauge reduction' of Higher Spin Gravity demonstrates that the physical content of 4D AdS HS theory is represented by the dynamics of an unconstrained scalar field in 6d. It is in this gauge reduced form that HS Theory…
An effective quantum field theory (QFT) with a manifest UV/IR connection, so as to be valid for arbitrarily large volumes, can successfully be applied to the cosmological dark energy problem as well as the cosmological constant (CC) problem. Motivated by recent approaches to the hierarchy problem, we develop such a framework with a large number of particle species. When applying to systems on the brink of experiencing a sudden collapse to a black hole, we find that the entropy, unlike the total energy, now becomes an increasing function of the number of field species. An internal consistency o…
First the "frame problem" is sketched: the motion of an isolated particle obeys a simple law in galilean frames, but how does the galilean character of the frame manifest itself at the place of the particle? A description of vacuum as a system of virtual particles will help to answer this question. For future application to such a description, the notion of global particle is defined and studied. To this end, a systematic use of the Fourier transformation on the Poincare group is needed. The state of a system of n free particles is represented by a statistical operator W, which defines an oper…
