Comments welcome! This new version includes expanded reference to previous work of Stefaan Vaes which constructs equivalence relations without finite extensions or ergodic finite index sub relations. Also I shortened the paper by removing my construction with Pierre-Emmanuel Caprace since Stefaan's constructions are based on the same principles
We construct ergodic discrete probability measure preserving equivalence relations $\cR$ that has no proper ergodic normal subequivalence relations and no proper ergodic finite-index subequivalence relations. We show that every treeable equivalence relation satisfying a mild ergodicity condition and cost $>1$ surjects onto every countable group with ergodic kernel. Lastly, we provide a simple characterization of normality for subequivalence relations and an algebraic description of the quotient.
We study the $C^*$-algebras of the étale groupoids defined by the asymptotic equivalence relations for hyperbolic automorphisms on the two-dimensional torus. The algebras are proved to be four-dimensional non-commutative tori by an explicit numerical computation. The ranges of the unique tracial states of its $K_0$-groups of the $C^*$-algebras are described in terms of the hyperbolic matrices of the automorphisms on the torus.
We show that the stabilization of any countable ergodic p.m.p. equivalence relation which is not Schmidt, i.e. admits no central sequences in its full group, always gives rise to a stable equivalence relation with a unique stable decomposition, providing the first non-strongly ergodic such examples. In the proof, we moreover establish a new local characterization of the Schmidt property. We also prove some new structural results for product equivalence relations and orbit equivalence relations of diagonal product actions.
We introduce a generalization of the notion of approximately proper equivalence relations studied by Renault and with it we build an étale groupoid. Choosing a suitable set of continuous functions to play the role of a potential, we construct a cocycle in that groupoid and discuss the corresponding Radon-Nikodym problem.
We introduce higher order regionally proximal relations suitable for an arbitrary acting group. For minimal abelian group actions, these relations coincide with the ones introduced by Host, Kra and Maass. Our main result is that these relations are equivalence relations whenever the action is minimal. This was known for abelian actions by a result of Shao and Ye. We also show that these relations lift through extensions between minimal systems. Answering a question by Tao, given a minimal system, we prove that the regionally proximal equivalence relation of order $d$ corresponds to the maximal…
We show that every basis for the countable Borel equivalence relations strictly above $\mathbb{E}_0$ under measure reducibility is uncountable, thereby ruling out natural generalizations of the Glimm-Effros dichotomy. We also push many known results concerning the abstract structure of the measure reducibility hierarchy to its base, using arguments substantially simpler than those previously employed.
We show that a Borel action of a standard Borel group which is isomorphic to a sum of a countable abelian group with a countable sum of real lines and circles induces an orbit equivalence relation which is hypersmooth, i.e., Borel reducible to eventual agreement on sequences of reals, and it follows from this result along with the structure theory for locally compact abelian groups that Borel actions of Polish LCA groups induce orbit equivalence relations which are essentially hyperfinite, extending a result of Gao and Jackson and answering a question of Ding and Gao.
