Uniform non-amenability, cost, and the first l^2-Betti number

It is shown that $2β_1(\G)\leq h(\G)$ for any countable group $\G$, where $β_1(\G)$ is the first $\ell^2$-Betti number and $h(\G)$ the uniform isoperimetric constant. In particular, a countable group with non-vanishing first $\ell^2$-Betti number is uniformly non-amenable. We then define isoperimetric constants in the framework of measured equivalence relations. Amenable covers, volume and L2-Betti numbers of aspherical manifolds

We provide a proof for an inequality between volume and L2-Betti numbers of aspherical manifolds for which Gromov outlined a strategy based on general ideas of Connes. The implementation of that strategy involves measured equivalence relations, Gaboriau's theory of L2-Betti numbers of R-simplicial complexes, and other themes of measurable group theory. Further, we prove new vanishing theorems for L2-Betti numbers that generalize a classical result of Cheeger and Gromov. A spectral sequence to compute L2-Betti numbers of groups and groupoids

We construct a spectral sequence for L2-type cohomology groups of discrete measured groupoids. Based on the spectral sequence, we prove the Hopf-Singer conjecture for aspherical manifolds with poly-surface fundamental groups. More generally, we obtain a permanence result for the Hopf-Singer conjecture under taking fiber bundles whose base space is an aspherical manifold with poly-surface fundamental group. Non-standard limits of graphs and some orbit equivalence invariants

We consider probability measure preserving discrete groupoids, group actions and equivalence relations in the context of general probability spaces. We study for these objects the notions of cost, $β$-invariant and some higher-dimensional variants. We also propose various convergence results about $\ell^2$-Betti numbers and rank gradient for sequences of actions, groupoids or equivalence relations under weak finiteness assumptions. AF-equivalence relations and their cocycles

After a review of some of the main results about hyperfinite equivalence relations and their cocycles in the measured setting, we give a definition of a topological AF-equivalence relation. We show that every cocycle is cohomologous to a quasi-product cocycle. We then study the problem of determining the quasi-invariant probability measures admitting a given cocycle as their Radon-Nikodym derivative.
