A method for constructing first integral preserving numerical schemes for time-dependent partial differential equations on non-uniform grids is presented. The method can be used with both finite difference and partition of unity approaches, thereby also including finite element approaches. The schemes are then extended to accommodate $r$-, $h$- and $p$-adaptivity. The method is applied to the Korteweg-de Vries equation and the Sine-Gordon equation and results from numerical experiments are presented.
A fixed time-step variational integrator cannot preserve momentum, energy, and symplectic form simultaneously for nonintegrable systems. This barrier can be overcome by treating time as a discrete dynamic variable and deriving adaptive time-step variational integrators that conserve the energy in addition to being symplectic and momentum-preserving. Their utility, however, is still an open question due to the numerical difficulties associated with solving the discrete governing equations. In this work, we investigate the numerical performance of energy-preserving, adaptive time-step variationa…

A novel class of explicit high-order energy-preserving methods are proposed for general Hamiltonian partial differential equations with non-canonical structure matrix. When the energy is not quadratic, it is firstly done that the original system is reformulated into an equivalent form with a modified quadratic energy conservation law by the energy quadratization approach. Then the resulting system that satisfies the quadratic energy conservation law is discretized in time by combining explicit high-order Runge-Kutta methods with orthogonal projection techniques. The proposed schemes are shown …
This work proposes an adaptive structure-preserving model order reduction method for finite-dimensional parametrized Hamiltonian systems modeling non-dissipative phenomena. To overcome the slowly decaying Kolmogorov width typical of transport problems, the full model is approximated on local reduced spaces that are adapted in time using dynamical low-rank approximation techniques. The reduced dynamics is prescribed by approximating the symplectic projection of the Hamiltonian vector field in the tangent space to the local reduced space. This ensures that the canonical symplectic structure of t…
In this work, we present a positivity-preserving entropy-based adaptive filtering method for shock capturing in discontinuous spectral element methods. By adapting the filter strength to enforce positivity and a local discrete minimum entropy principle, the resulting approach can robustly resolve strong discontinuities with sub-element resolution, does not require problem-dependent parameter tuning, and can be easily implemented on general unstructured meshes with relatively low computational cost. The efficacy of the approach is shown in numerical experiments on hyperbolic and mixed hyperboli…
This work is focused on the extension and assessment of the monotonicity-preserving scheme in [3] and the local bounds preserving scheme in [5] to hierarchical octree adaptive mesh refinement (AMR). Whereas the former can readily be used on this kind of meshes, the latter requires some modifications. A key question that we want to answer in this work is whether to move from a linear to a nonlinear stabilization mechanism pays the price when combined with shock-adapted meshes. Whereas nonlinear (or shock-capturing) stabilization leads to improved accuracy compared to linear schemes, it also neg…
We present an adaptive well-balanced positivity preserving central-upwind scheme on quadtree grids for shallow water equations. The use of quadtree grids results in a robust, efficient and highly accurate numerical method. The quadtree model is developed based on the well-balanced positivity preserving central-upwind scheme proposed in [A. Kurganov and G. Petrova, Commun. Math. Sci., 5 (2007), pp. 133--160]. The designed scheme is well-balanced in the sense that it is capable of exactly preserving "lake-at-rest" steady states. In order to achieve this as well as to preserve positivity of water…
Convergence of an adaptive collocation method for the stationary parametric diffusion equation with finite-dimensional affine coefficient is shown. The adaptive algorithm relies on a recently introduced residual-based reliable a posteriori error estimator. For the convergence proof, a strategy recently used for a stochastic Galerkin method with an hierarchical error estimator is transferred to the collocation setting. Extensions to other variants of adaptive collocation methods (including the classical one proposed in the paper "Dimension-adaptive tensor-product quadratuture" Computing (2003) …
Many important differential equations model quantities whose value must remain positive or stay in some bounded interval. These bounds may not be preserved when the model is solved numerically. We propose to ensure positivity or other bounds by applying Runge-Kutta integration in which the method weights are adapted in order to enforce the bounds. The weights are chosen at each step after calculating the stage derivatives, in a way that also preserves (when possible) the order of accuracy of the method. The choice of weights is given by the solution of a linear program. We investigate differen…
We introduce an explicit, adaptive time-stepping scheme for the simulation of SPDEs with one-sided Lipschitz drift coefficients. Strong convergence rates are proven for the full space-time discretisation with multiplicative trace-class noise by considering the space and time discretisation separately. Adapting the time-step size to ensure strong convergence is shown numerically to produce more accurate solutions when compared to alternative fixed time-stepping strategies for the same computational effort.
We present a new temporal discretization paradigm for developing energy-production-rate preserving numerical approximations to thermodynamically consistent partial differential equation systems, called the supplementary variable method. The central idea behind it is to introduce a supplementary variable to the thermodynamically consistent model to make the over-determined equation system, consisting of the thermodynamically consistent PDE system, the energy definition and the energy dissipation equation, structurally stable. The supplementary variable allows one to retain the consistency betwe…
In this paper, a nonsmooth semilinear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) is considered. For a reduced basis (RB) approach, a space-time formulation is used to develop a certified a-posteriori error estimator. This error estimator is adopted to the presence of the discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM) as approximation technique for the nonsmoothness. The separability of the estimated error into an RB and a DEIM part then guides the development of an adaptive RB-DEIM algorithm, combining both offline phases into one. Numerical experiments show the capabilities of this novel a…
In this article, we propose a two-grid based adaptive proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method to solve the time dependent partial differential equations. Based on the error obtained in the coarse grid, we propose an error indicator for the numerical solution obtained in the fine grid. Our new algorithm is cheap and easy to be implement. We apply our new method to the solution of time-dependent advection-diffusion equations with the Kolmogorov flow and the ABC flow. The numerical results show that our method is more efficient than the existing POD methods.
In this paper, we present and study discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for one-dimensional multi-symplectic Hamiltonian partial differential equations. We particularly focus on semi-discrete schemes with spatial discretization only, and show that the proposed DG methods can simultaneously preserve the multi-symplectic structure and energy conservation with a general class of numerical fluxes, which includes the well-known central and alternating fluxes. Applications to the wave equation, the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation, the Camassa-Holm equation, the Korteweg-de Vries equation and the nonli…
In recent years, there has been a large increase in interest in numerical algorithms which preserve various qualitative features of the original continuous problem. Herein, we propose and investigate a numerical algorithm which preserves qualitative features of so-called quenching combustion partial differential equations (PDEs). Such PDEs are often used to model solid-fuel ignition processes or enzymatic chemical reactions and are characterized by their singular nonlinear reaction terms and the exhibited positivity and monotonicity of their solutions on their time intervals of existence. In t…
Strong stability preserving (SSP) coefficients govern the maximally allowable step-size at which positivity or contractivity preservation of integration methods for initial value problems is guaranteed. In this paper, we show that the task of computing linear SSP coefficients of explicit one-step methods is, to a certain extent, equivalent to the problem of characterizing positive quadratures with integer nodes with respect to Poisson-Charlier measures. Using this equivalence, we provide sharp upper and lower bounds for the optimal linear SSP coefficients in terms of the zeros of generalized L…
In this paper, we construct a robust adaptive central-upwind scheme on unstructured triangular grids for two-dimensional shallow water equations with variable density. The method is well-balanced, positivity-preserving, and oscillation-free at the curve where two types of fluid merge. The proposed approach is an extension of the adaptive well-balanced, positivity-preserving scheme developed in Epshteyn and Nguyen (arXiv preprint arXiv:2011.06143, 2020). In particular, to preserve "lake-at-rest" steady states, we utilize the Riemann Solver with appropriately rotated coordinates to obtain the po…
We present novel roulette schemes for rare-event sampling that are both structure-preserving and unbiased. The boundaries where Monte Carlo markers are split and deleted are placed automatically and adapted during runtime. Extending existing codes with the new schemes is possible without severe changes because the equation of motion for the markers is not altered. These schemes can also be applied in the presence of nonlinear and nonlocal coupling between markers. As an illustrative application, we have implemented this method in the ASCOT-RFOF code, used to simulate fast-ion generation by rad…

In this work we propose a deep adaptive sampling (DAS) method for solving partial differential equations (PDEs), where deep neural networks are utilized to approximate the solutions of PDEs and deep generative models are employed to generate new collocation points that refine the training set. The overall procedure of DAS consists of two components: solving the PDEs by minimizing the residual loss on the collocation points in the training set and generating a new training set to further improve the accuracy of current approximate solution. In particular, we treat the residual as a probability …

We introduce an $r-$adaptive algorithm to solve Partial Differential Equations using a Deep Neural Network. The proposed method restricts to tensor product meshes and optimizes the boundary node locations in one dimension, from which we build two- or three-dimensional meshes. The method allows the definition of fixed interfaces to design conforming meshes, and enables changes in the topology, i.e., some nodes can jump across fixed interfaces. The method simultaneously optimizes the node locations and the PDE solution values over the resulting mesh. To numerically illustrate the performance of …
