If one considers an integral varifold $I^m\subseteq M$ with bounded mean curvature, and if $S^k(I)\equiv\{x\in M: \text{ no tangent cone at $x$ is }k+1\text{-symmetric}\}$ is the standard stratification of the singular set, then it is well known that $\dim S^k\leq k$. In complete generality nothing else is known about the singular sets $S^k(I)$. In this paper we prove for a general integral varifold with bounded mean curvature, in particular a stationary varifold, that every stratum $S^k(I)$ is $k$-rectifiable. In fact, we prove for $k$-a.e. point $x\in S^k$ that there exists a unique $k$-plane $V^k$ such that every tangent cone at $x$ is of the form $V\times C$ for some cone $C$.
In the case of minimizing hypersurfaces $I^{n-1}\subseteq M^n$ we can go further. Indeed, we can show that the singular set $S(I)$, which is known to satisfy $\dim S(I)\leq n-8$, is in fact $n-8$ rectifiable with uniformly finite $n-8$ measure. An effective version of this allows us to prove that the second fundamental form $A$ has apriori estimates in $L^7_{weak}$ on $I$, an estimate which is sharp as $|A|$ is not in $L^7$ for the Simons cone. In fact, we prove the much stronger estimate that the regularity scale $r_I$ has $L^7_{weak}$-estimates.
The above results are in fact just applications of a new class of estimates we prove on the quantitative stratifications $S^k_{ε,r}$ and $S^k_ε\equiv S^k_{ε,0}$. Roughly, $x\in S^k_ε\subseteq I$ if no ball $B_r(x)$ is $ε$-close to being $k+1$-symmetric. We show that $S^k_ε$ is $k$-rectifiable and satisfies the Minkowski estimate $Vol(B_r\,S_ε^k)\leq C_εr^{n-k}$. The proof requires a new $L^2$-subspace approximation theorem for integral varifolds with bounded mean curvature, and a $W^{1,p}$-Reifenberg type theorem proved by the authors in \cite{NaVa+}.
We establish an optimal regularity result for parametrized two-dimensional stationary varifolds. Namely, we show that the parametrization map is a smooth minimal branched immersion and that the multiplicity function is constant. We provide some applications of this regularity result, especially in the calculus of variations for the area functional.
For an intergral $2$-varifold $V=\underline{v}(Σ,θ_{\ge 1})$ in the unit ball $B_1$ passing through the original point, assuming the critical Allard condition holds, that is, the area $μ_V(B_1)$ is close to the area of a unit disk and the generalized mean curvature has sufficient small $L^2$ norm, we prove $Σ$ is bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic to a flat disk in $\mathbb{R}^2$ locally.
We give two structural conditions on a codimension $1$ integral $n$-varifold with first variation locally summable to an exponent $p>n$ that imply the following: whenever each orientable portion of the $C^{1}$-embedded part of the varifold (which is non-empty by the Allard regularity theory) is stationarity and the $C^{2}$-immersed part of it is stable with respect to the area functional for volume preserving deformations, its support, except possibly on a closed set of codimension $7$, is an immersed constant-mean-curvature (cmc) hypersurface of class $C^{2}$ that can fail to be embedded only…

In a previous paper we developed a regularity and compactness theory in Euclidean ambient spaces for codimension 1 weakly stable CMC integral varifolds satisfying two (necessary) structural conditions. Here we generalize this theory to the setting where the mean curvature (of the regular part of the varifold) is prescribed by a given $C^{1, α}$ ambient function $g$ and the ambient space is a general $(n+1)$-dimensional Riemannian manifold; we give general conditions that imply that the support of the varifold, away from a possible singular set of dimension $\leq n-7,$ is the image of a $C^{2}$…
We give a necessary and sufficient geometric structural condition for a stable codimension 1 integral varifold on a smooth Riemannian manifold to correspond to an embedded smooth hypersurface away from a small set of generally unavoidable singularities; when this condition is satisfied, the singular set is empty if the dimension of the varifold is 6 or smaller, discrete if the dimension is 7 and has Hausdorff codimension at least 7 if the dimension is 8 or larger. No initial smallness assumption on the singular set is necessary for these conclusions. The work in particular settles the long sta…
We prove existence and partial regularity of integral rectifiable $m$-dimensional varifolds minimizing functionals of the type $\int |H|^p$ and $\int |A|^p$ in a given Riemannian $n$-dimensional manifold $(N,g)$, $2\leq m<n$ and $p>m$, under suitable assumptions on $N$ (in the end of the paper we give many examples of such ambient manifolds). To this aim we introduce the following new tools: some monotonicity formulas for varifolds in $\mathbb{R}^S$ involving $\int |H|^p$, to avoid degeneracy of the minimizer, and a sort of isoperimetric inequality to bound the mass in terms of the mentioned f…
We survey - by means of 20 examples - the concept of varifold, as generalised submanifold, with emphasis on regularity of integral varifolds with mean curvature, while keeping prerequisites to a minimum. Integral varifolds are the natural language for studying the variational theory of the area integrand if one considers, for instance, existence or regularity of stationary (or, stable) surfaces of dimension at least three, or the limiting behaviour of sequences of smooth submanifolds under area and mean curvature bounds.
We prove that every stationary polyhedral varifold minimizes area in the following senses: (1) its area cannot be decreased by a one-to-one Lipschitz ambient deformation that coincides with the identity outside of a compact set, and (2) it is the varifold associated to a mass-minimizing flat chain with coefficients in a certain metric abelian group. NOTE: After this paper was posted, I learned that (1) and (2) were already proved by Choe and Morgan, respectively. Thus this paper is an exposition of their results.
For a given family of smooth closed curves $γ^1,...,γ^α\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ we consider the problem of finding an elastic \emph{connected} compact surface $M$ with boundary $γ=γ^1\cup...\cupγ^α$. This is realized by minimizing the Willmore energy $\mathcal{W}$ on a suitable class of competitors. While the direct minimization of the Area functional may lead to limits that are disconnected, we prove that, if the infimum of the problem is $<4π$, there exists a connected compact minimizer of $\mathcal{W}$ in the class of integer rectifiable curvature varifolds with the assigned boundary conditions…
We prove that $m$-dimensional Lipschitz graphs with anisotropic mean curvature bounded in $L^p$, $p>m$, are regular almost everywhere in every dimension and codimension. This provides partial or full answers to multiple open questions arising in the literature. The anisotropic energy is required to satisfy a novel ellipticity condition, which holds for instance in a $C^2$ neighborhood of the area functional. This condition is proved to imply the atomic condition. In particular we provide the first non-trivial class of examples of anisotropic energies in high codimension satisfying the atomic c…
We adapt the method of Simon [JDG '93] to prove a $C^{1,α}$-regularity theorem for minimal varifolds which resemble a cone $\bf{C}_0^2$ over an equiangular geodesic net. For varifold classes admitting a "no-hole" condition on the singular set, we additionally establish $C^{1,α}$-regularity near the cone $\bf{C}_0^2 \times \mathbb R^m$. Combined with work of Allard [Ann. of Math. '72], Simon [JDG '93], Taylor [Ann. of Math. '76], and Naber-Valtorta [Ann. of Math. '17], our result implies a $C^{1,α}$-structure for the top three strata of minimizing clusters and size-minimizing currents, and a Li…
We show $C^{1,α}$-regularity for energy minimizing maps from a 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold into a Finsler space $(\R^n, F)$ with a Finsler structure $F(u,X)$.
We prove a new logarithmic epiperimetric inequality for multiplicity-one stationary cones with isolated singularity by flowing in the radial direction any given trace along appropriately chosen directions. In contrast to previous epiperimetric inequalities for minimal surfaces (e.g. those of Reifenberg, Taylor and White), we need no a priori assumptions on the structure of the cone (e.g. integrability). Moreover, if the cone is integrable (not only through rotations), we recover the classical epiperimetric inequality. As a consequence we deduce a new $\varepsilon$-regularity result for almost …
In this article, we show that, for any compact 3-manifold, there is a $C^{1}$ volume-minimizing one-dimensional foliation. More generally, we show the existence of mass-minimizing rectifiable sections of sphere bundles without isolated "pole points" in the base manifold. This same analysis is used to show that the examples, due to Sharon Pedersen, of potentially volume-minimizing rectifiable sections (rectifiable foliations) of the unit tangent bundle to $S^{2n+1}$ are not, in fact, volume minimizing.
Hardt-Simon proved that every area-minimizing hypercone $\mathbf{C}$ having only an isolated singularity fits into a foliation of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ by smooth, area-minimizing hypersurfaces asymptotic to $\mathbf{C}$. In this paper we prove that if a stationary $n$-varifold $M$ in the unit ball $B_1 \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ lies sufficiently close to a minimizing quadratic cone (for example, the Simons' cone $\mathbf{C}^{3,3}$), then $\mathrm{spt} M \cap B_{1/2}$ is a $C^{1,α}$ perturbation of either the cone itself, or some leaf of its associated foliation. In particular, we show that singul…
Let $N$ be a Riemannian manifold and consider a stationary union of three or more $C^{1,μ}$ hypersurfaces-with-boundary $M_k$ in $N$ with a common boundary $Γ$. We show that if $N$ is smooth, then $Γ$ is smooth and each $M_k$ is smooth up to $Γ$ (real analytic in the case $N$ is real analytic). Consequently we strengthen a result of Wickramasekera to conclude that under the stronger hypothesis that $V$ is a stationary, stable, integral $n$-varifold in an $(n+1)$-dimensional, smooth (real analytic) Riemannian manifold such that the support of $\|V\|$ is nowhere locally the union of three or mor…
In this article we extend to generic $p$-energy minimizing maps between Riemannian manifolds a regularity result which is known to hold in the case $p=2$. We first show that the set of singular points of such a map can be quantitatively stratified: we classify singular points based on the number of almost-symmetries of the map around them, as done by Cheeger and Naber in 2013. Then, adapting the work of Naber and Valtorta, we apply a Reifenberg-type Theorem to each quantitative stratum; through this, we achieve an upper bound on the Minkowski content of the singular set, and we prove it is $k$…
In this paper we prove quantitative regularity results for stationary and minimizing extrinsic biharmonic maps. As an application, we determine sharp, dimension independent $L^p$ bounds for $\nabla^k f$ that do not require a small energy hypothesis. In particular, every minimizing biharmonic map is in $W^{4,p}$ for all $1\le p<5/4$. Further, for minimizing biharmonic maps from $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^5$, we determine a uniform bound on the number of singular points in a compact set. Finally, using dimension reduction arguments, we extend these results to minimizing and stationary biharmonic maps …
We analyze the asymptotic behavior of a $2$-dimensional integral current which is almost minimizing in a suitable sense at a singular point. Our analysis is the second half of an argument which shows the discreteness of the singular set for the following three classes of $2$-dimensional currents: area minimizing in Riemannian manifolds, semicalibrated and spherical cross sections of $3$-dimensional area minimizing cones.
Energy minimizing harmonic maps between manifolds are known to be smooth outside a rectifiable set of codimension $3$, called the singular set. The possibility that this set is not a manifold, but has arbitrarily many small gaps in it, is not excluded in general. Here we prove that some part of the singular set - characterized by topological and analytic properties of tangent maps - is a topological manifold. In the special case of maps into the sphere ${\mathbb S}^2$, we conclude that the whole top-dimensional part of the singular set is a manifold - this generalizes a similar result in two-d…
Let B be a fiber bundle with compact fiber F over a compact Riemannian n-manifold M. There is a natural Riemannian metric on the total space B consistent with the metric on M. With respect to that metric, the volume of a rectifiable section s:M--> B is the mass of the image s(M) as a rectifiable n-current in B. Theorem: For any homology class of sections of B, there is a mass-minimizing Cartesian current T representing that homology class which is the graph of a C^1 section on an open dense subset of M.
We construct a branched center manifold in a neighborhood of a singular point of a $2$-dimensional integral current which is almost minimizing in a suitable sense. Our construction is the first half of an argument which shows the discreteness of the singular set for the following three classes of $2$-dimensional currents: area minimizing in Riemannian manifolds, semicalibrated and spherical cross sections of $3$-dimensional area minimizing cones.
We construct Lipschitz $Q$-valued functions which approximate carefully integral currents when their cylindrical excess is small and they are almost minimizing in a suitable sense. This result is used in two subsequent works to prove the discreteness of the singular set for the following three classes of $2$-dimensional integral currents: area minimizing in Riemannian manifolds, semicalibrated and spherical cross sections of $3$-dimensional area minimizing cones.
This is the last of a series of three papers in which we give a new, shorter proof of a slightly improved version of Almgren's partial regularity of area minimizing currents in Riemannian manifolds. Here we perform a blow-up analysis deducing the regularity of area minimizing currents from that of Dir-minimizing multiple valued functions.
This a survey on a series of recent papers in collaboration with Emanuele Spadaro on the regularity of area-minimizing currents in codimension higher than $1$.
We study the existence and regularity of energy-minimizing harmonic almost complex structures. We have proved results similar to the theory of harmonic maps, notably the classical results of Schoen-Uhlenbeck and recent advance by Cheeger-Naber.
