We prove that $m$-dimensional Lipschitz graphs with anisotropic mean curvature bounded in $L^p$, $p>m$, are regular almost everywhere in every dimension and codimension. This provides partial or full answers to multiple open questions arising in the literature. The anisotropic energy is required to satisfy a novel ellipticity condition, which holds for instance in a $C^2$ neighborhood of the area functional. This condition is proved to imply the atomic condition. In particular we provide the first non-trivial class of examples of anisotropic energies in high codimension satisfying the atomic condition, addressing an open question in the field. As a byproduct, we deduce the rectifiability of varifolds (resp. of the mass of varifolds) with locally bounded anisotropic first variation for a $C^2$ (resp. $C^1$) neighborhood of the area functional. In addition to these examples, we also provide a class of anisotropic energies in high codimension, far from the area functional, for which the rectifiability of the mass of varifolds with locally bounded anisotropic first variation holds. To conclude, we show that the atomic condition excludes non-trivial Young measures in the case of anisotropic stationary graphs.
This paper deals with a class of nonlinear anisotropic parabolic equations with degenerate coercivity. Using the anisotropic Gagliardo-Nirenberg-type inequality, we prove some existence and regularity results for the solutions under the framework of anisotropic Sobolev spaces, which generalize the previous results of [10,18,23].
In this paper we study a class of anisotropic equations with a lower order term whose coefficients lay in Marcinkiewicz spaces. We prove some regularity results for local solutions requiring any control on the norm of the coefficients.
In this article we use the mean curvature flow with surgery to derive regularity estimates for the level set flow going past Brakke regularity in certain special conditions allowing for 2-convex regions of high density. We also show a stability result for the plane under the level set flow.
We present a simple proof of the $C^1$ regularity of $p$-anisotropic functions in the plane for $2\leq p<\infty$. We achieve a logarithmic modulus of continuity for the derivatives. The monotonicity (in the sense of Lebesgue) of the derivatives is used. The case with two exponents is also included.
We consider fully nonlinear integro-differential equations governed by kernels that have different homogeneities in different directions. We prove a nonlocal version of the ABP estimate, a Harnack inequality and the interior $C^{1, γ}$ regularity, extending the results of [Caffarelli and Silvestre, CPAM 62, 2009] to the anisotropic case.
In this paper, we investigate the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to 2D Boussinesq system with anisotropic thermal diffusion or anisotropic viscosity and with striated initial data. Using the key idea of Chemin to solve 2-D vortex patch of ideal fluid, namely the striated regularity can help to bound the gradient of the velocity, we can prove the global well-posedness of the Boussinesq system with anisotropic thermal diffusion with initial vorticity being discontinuous across some smooth interface. In the case of an anisotropic horizontal viscosity we can study the propagat…
In this paper, we obtain local Hölder regularity for bounded, weak solutions to the anisotropic $p$-Laplace equation whose prototype structure is given by $$ \sum_{i=1}^N (|u_{x_i}|^{p_i-2}u_{x_i})_{x_i}=0,$$ where $1 < p_1 \leq p_2 \leq \cdots \leq p_N < \infty$. Under an additional assumption that double truncates of the solution are sub/super solution, we obtain Hölder regularity for the anisotropic equation.
We consider a class of quasi-linear anisotropic elliptic equations, possibly degenerate or singular, which are of interest in several applications such as computer vision and continuum mechanics. We prove a Hopf Lemma as well as local and global regularity estimates for positive solutions, generalizing previous results known in the context of p-Laplacian equations.
In this paper we prove a convergence result for sequences of Willmore immersions with simple minimal bubbles. To this end we replace the total curvature control in T. Rivière's proof of the $\varepsilon$-regularity for Willmore immersions by a control of the local Willmore energy.
We prove quantitative estimates for flows of vector fields subject to anisotropic regularity conditions: some derivatives of some components are (singular integrals of) measures, while the remaining derivatives are (singular integrals of) integrable functions. This is motivated by the regularity of the vector field in the Vlasov-Poisson equation with measure density. The proof exploits an anisotropic variant of the argument of Crippa and De Lellis and suitable estimates for the difference quotients in such anisotropic context. In contrast to regularization methods, this approach gives quantita…
We prove higher differentiability of bounded local minimizers to some widely degenerate functionals, verifying superquadratic anisotropic growth conditions. In the two dimensional case, we prove that local minimizers to a model functional are locally Lipschitz continuous functions, without any restriction on the anisotropy.
We establish interior $C^2$ estimates for convex solutions of scalar curvature equation and $σ_2$-Hessian equation. We also prove interior curvature estimate for isometrically immersed hypersurfaces $(M^n,g)\subset \mathbb R^{n+1}$ with positive scalar curvature. These estimates are consequences of an interior estimate for these equations obtained under a weakened condition.
We show short time existence and uniqueness of $\C^{1,1}$ solutions to the mean curvature flow with obstacles, when the obstacles are of class $\C^{1,1}$. If the initial interface is a periodic graph we show long time existence of the evolution and convergence to a minimal constrained hypersurface.
We give a new proof of Brakke's partial regularity theorem up to C^{1,ς} for weak varifold solutions of mean curvature flow by utilizing parabolic monotonicity formula, parabolic Lipschitz approximation and blow-up technique. The new proof extends to a general flow whose velocity is the sum of the mean curvature and any given background flow field in a dimensionally sharp integrability class. It is a natural parabolic generalization of Allard's regularity theorem in the sense that the special time-independent case reduces to Allard's theorem.
In this paper we consider the evolution of a graph-like hypersurface by anisotropic mean curvature flow, under some restrictions on the anisotropic area integrand. We find interior estimates (in both time and space) on the gradient of such hypersurfaces, depending only on the height of the graph and the anisotropic area integrand.
We show existence of solutions to the least gradient problem on the plane for boundary data in $BV(\partialΩ)$. We also provide an example of a function $f \in L^1(\partialΩ) \backslash (C(\partialΩ) \cup BV(\partialΩ))$, for which the solution exists. We also show non-uniqueness of solutions even for smooth boundary data in the anisotropic case for a nonsmooth anisotropy. We additionally prove a regularity result valid also in higher dimensions.
In this paper we study integro-differential equations like the anisotropic fractional Laplacian. As in [Silvestre, Indiana University Mathematics Journal 55, 2006], we adapt the De Giorgi technique to achieve the $C^γ$-regularity for solutions of class $C^{2}$ and use the geometry found in [Caffarelli, Leitão, and Urbano, Math. Ann. 360, 2014] to get an ABP estimate, a Harnack inequality and the interior $C^{1, γ}$ regularity for viscosity solutions.
A set of locally finite perimeter $E \subset \mathbb{R}^{n}$ is called an anisotropic minimal surface in an open set $A$ if $Φ(E;A) \le Φ(F;A)$ for some surface energy $Φ(E;A) = \int_{\partial^{*}E \cap A} \| ν_{E}\| d \mathcal{H}^{n-1}$ and all sets of locally finite perimeter $F$ such that $E ΔF \subset \subset A$. In this short note we provide the details of a geometric proof verifying that all anisotropic surface minimizers in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ whose corresponding integrand $\| \cdot \|$ is strictly convex are locally disjoint unions of line segments. This demonstrates that, in the plane, s…
Local volume-constrained minimizers in anisotropic capillarity problems develop free boundaries on the walls of their containers. We prove the regularity of the free boundary outside a closed negligible set, showing in particular the validity of Young's law at almost every point of the free boundary. Our regularity results are not specific to capillarity problems, and actually apply to sets of finite perimeter (and thus to codimension one integer rectifiable currents) arising as minimizers in other variational problems with free boundaries.
The focus of this paper is the study of the regularity properties of the time harmonic Maxwell's equations with anisotropic complex coefficients, in a bounded domain with $C^{1,1}$ boundary. We assume that at least one of the material parameters is $W^{1,3+δ}$ for some $δ>0$. Using regularity theory for second order elliptic partial differential equations, we derive $W^{1,p}$ estimates and Hölder estimates for electric and magnetic fields up to the boundary. We also derive interior estimates in bi-anisotropic media.
We consider inhomogeneous $p$-Laplace type equations of the form $-\mathrm{div}\left(a(\nabla u)\right)=f$ in a possibly anisotropic setting. Under general assumptions on the source term $f$, we obtain quantitative Sobolev regularity results for the stress field $a(\nabla u)$ and weighted $L^2$ estimates for the Hessian of the solution. As far as we know, our results are new or refine the ones available in literature also when restricted to the Euclidean setting.
We review recent work on the local geometry and optimal regularity of Lorentzian manifolds with bounded curvature. Our main results provide an estimate of the injectivity radius of an observer, and a local canonical foliations by CMC (Constant Mean Curvature) hypersurfaces, together with spatially harmonic coordinates. In contrast with earlier results based on a global bound for derivatives of the curvature, our method requires only a sup-norm bound on the curvature near the given observer.
In this paper, we address the partial regularity of suitable weak solutions of the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. We prove an interior regularity criterion involving only one component of the velocity. Namely, if $(u,p)$ is a suitable weak solution and a certain scale-invariant quantity involving only $u_3$ is small on a space-time cylinder $Q_r(x_0,t_0)$, then $u$ is regular at $(x_0,t_0)$.
We establish existence results for a class of mixed anisotropic and nonlocal $p$-Laplace equation with singular nonlinearities. We consider both constant and variable singular exponents. Our argument is based on an approximation method. To this end, we also discuss the necessary regularity properties of weak solutions of the associated non-singular problems. More precisely, we obtain local boundedness of subsolutions, Harnack inequality for solutions and weak Harnack inequality for supersolutions.
This paper establishes the global in time existence of classical solutions to the 2D anisotropic Boussinesq equations with vertical dissipation. When only the vertical dissipation is present, there is no direct control on the horizontal derivatives and the global regularity problem is very challenging. To solve this problem, we bound the derivatives in terms of the $L^\infty$-norm of the vertical velocity $v$ and prove that $\|v\|_{L^{r}}$ with $2\le r<\infty$ at any time does not grow faster than $\sqrt{r \log r}$ as $r$ increases. A delicate interpolation inequality connecting $\|v\|_{L^\inf…
In this paper, we study the 3D axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes Equations with swirl. We prove the global regularity of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations for a family of large anisotropic initial data. Moreover, we obtain a global bound of the solution in terms of its initial data in some $L^p$ norm. Our results also reveal some interesting dynamic growth behavior of the solution due to the interaction between the angular velocity and the angular vorticity fields.
This paper is concerned with the regularity of solutions to parabolic evolution equations. Special attention is paid to the smoothness in the specific anisotropic scale $\ B^{r\mathbf{a}}_{τ,τ}, \ \frac{1}τ=\frac{r}{d}+\frac{1}{p}\ $ of Besov spaces where $\mathbf{a}$ measures the anisotropy. The regularity in these spaces determines the approximation order that can be achieved by fully space-time adaptive approximation schemes. In particular, we show that for the heat equation our results significantly improve previous results by Aimar and Gomez [3].
The skew mean curvature flow is an evolution equation for a $d$ dimensional manifold immersed into $\mathbb{R}^{d+2}$, and which moves along the binormal direction with a speed proportional to its mean curvature. In this article, we prove small data global regularity in low-regularity Sobolev spaces for the skew mean curvature flow in dimensions $d\geq 4$. This extends the local well-posedness result in \cite{HT}.
In the first part of this paper, we develop the theory of anisotropic curvature measures for convex bodies in the Euclidean space. It is proved that any convex body whose boundary anisotropic curvature measure equals a linear combination of other lower order anisotropic curvature measures with nonnegative coefficients is a scaled Wulff shape. This generalizes the classical results by Schneider [Comment. Math. Helv. \textbf{54} (1979), 42--60] and by Kohlmann [Arch. Math. (Basel) \textbf{70} (1998), 250--256] to the anisotropic setting. The main ingredients in the proof are the generalized anis…
Given an initial $C^1$ hypersurface and a time-dependent vector field in a Sobolev space, we prove a time-global existence of a family of hypersurfaces which start from the given hypersurface and which move by the velocity equal to the mean curvature plus the given vector field. We show that the hypersurfaces are $C^1$ for a short time and, even after some singularities occur, almost everywhere $C^1$ away from higher multiplicity region.
Mean curvature flow of clusters of n-dimensional surfaces in R^{n+k} that meet in triples at equal angles along smooth edges and higher order junctions on lower dimensional faces is a natural extension of classical mean curvature flow. We call such a flow a mean curvature flow with triple edges. We show that if a smooth mean curvature flow with triple edges is weakly close to a static union of three n-dimensional unit density half-planes, then it is smoothly close. Extending the regularity result to a class of integral Brakke flows, we show that this implies smooth short-time existence of the …
We show the existence of a smooth solution for the flow deformed by the square root of the scalar curvature multiplied by a positive anisotropic factor $ψ$ given a strictly convex initial hypersurface in Euclidean space suitably pinched. We also prove the convergence of rescaled surfaces to a smooth limit manifold which is a round sphere. In dimension two, it is shown that, with a volume preserving rescaling, the limit profile satisfies a soliton equation.
We study the geometry of complete immersed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with constant anisotropic mean curvature (CAMC). Assuming that the anisotropic functional is uniformly elliptic, we prove that: (1) planes and CAMC cylinders are the only complete surfaces with CAMC whose Gauss map image is contained in a closed hemisphere of $\mathbb{S}^2$; (2) Any complete surface with non-zero CAMC and whose Gaussian curvature does not change sign is either a CAMC cylinder or the Wulff shape, up to a homothety of $\mathbb{R}^3$; and (3) if the Wulff shape $W$ of the anisotropic functional is invariant wit…
We consider a $C^{1}$ smooth surface with prescribed $p$(or $H$)-mean curvature in the 3-dimensional Heisenberg group. Assuming only the prescribed $p$-mean curvature $H\in C^{0},$ we show that any characteristic curve is $C^{2}$ smooth and its (line) curvature equals $-H$ in the nonsingular domain$.$ By introducing characteristic coordinates and invoking the jump formulas along characteristic curves, we can prove that the Legendrian (or horizontal) normal gains one more derivative. Therefore the seed curves are $C^{2}$ smooth. We also obtain the uniqueness of characteristic and seed curves pa…
