Model categories have long been a useful tool in homotopy theory, allowing many generalizations of results in topological spaces to other categories. Giving a localization of a model category provides an additional model category structure on the same base category, which alters what objects are being considered equivalent by increasing the class of weak equivalences. In some situations, a model category where the class of weak equivalences is restricted from the original one could be more desirable. In this situation we need the notion of a delocalization. In this paper, right Bousfield delocalization is defined, we provide examples of right Bousfield delocalization as well as an existence theorem. In particular, we show that given two model category structures $\scr{M}_1$ and $\scr{M}_2$ we can define an additional model category structure $\scr{M}_1 \cap \scr{M}_2$ by defining the class of weak equivalences to be the intersection of the $\scr{M}_1$ and $\scr{M}_2$ weak equivalences. In addition we consider the model category on diagram categories over a base category (which is endowed with a model category structure) and show that delocalization is often preserved by the diagram model category structure.
Beligiannis and Marmaridis [\emph{Comm. in Algebra,} 22(12)(1994), 5021-5036] constructed the left and right triangulated structures on the stable categories of additive categories induced from some homological finite subcategories. We extend their results to slightly more general settings. As an application of our results we give some new examples of stable categories which have left or right triangulated structures from abelian model categories. An interesting outcome is that we can describe the pretriangulated structures of the homotopy categories of abelian model categories via the ones of…
The Euler characteristic was defined for finite strict n-categories by Leinster using the theory of enriched categories. This was an extension of some of his earlier work, which defined Euler characteristic for finite categories. Building on Leinster's work, we extend the notion of Euler characteristic to certain finite weak 2-categories and present a sketch of a similar extension to weak n-categories. We also discuss the extension of the Euler characteristic to certain finite $\left(\infty,1\right)$-categories.
Right triangulated categories can be thought of as triangulated categories whose shift functor is not an equivalence. We give intrinsic characterisations of when such categories have a natural extriangulated structure and are appearing as the (co-)aisle of a (co-)t-structure in an associated triangulated category.
The notion of right semi-equivalence in a right $(n+2)$-angulated category is defined in this article. Let $\mathscr C$ be an $n$-exangulated category and $\mathscr X$ is a strongly covariantly finite subcategory of $\mathscr C$. We prove that the standard right $(n+2)$-angulated category $\mathscr C/\mathscr X$ is right semi-equivalence under a natural assumption. As an application, we show that a right $(n+2)$-angulated category has an $n$-exangulated structure if and only if the suspension functor is right semi-equivalence. Besides, we also prove that an $n$-exangulated category $\mathscr C…
We define the notion of right $n$-angulated category, which generalizes the notion of right triangulated category. Let $\mathcal{C}$ be an additive category or $n$-angulated category and $\mathcal{X}$ a covariantly finite subcategory, we show that under certain conditions the quotient $\mathcal{C}/\mathcal{X}$ is a right $n$-angulated category. This result generalizes some previous work.
In a previous work, we have introduced a weakening of Quillen model categories called weak model categories. They still allow all the usual constructions of model category theory, but are easier to construct and are in some sense better behaved. In this paper we continue to develop their general theory by introducing combinatorial and accessible weak model categories. We give simple necessary and sufficient conditions under which such a weak model category can be extended into a left and/or right semi-model category. As an application, we recover Cisinski-Olschok theory and generalize it to we…
We show that an abelian category can be exactly, fully faithfully embedded into a module category as the right perpendicular subcategory to a set of modules or module morphisms if and only if it is a locally presentable abelian category with a projective generator, or in other words, the category of models of an additive algebraic theory of possibly infinite bounded arity. This includes the categories of contramodules over topological rings and other examples. Various versions of the definition of the right perpendicular subcategory are considered, all leading to the same class of abelian cate…
We present a doctrinal approach to category theory, obtained by abstracting from the indexed inclusions (via discrete fibrations and opfibrations) of the left and of the right actions of X in Cat in categories over X. Namely, a "weak temporal doctrine" consists essentially of two indexed functors with the same codomain, such that the induced functors have both left and right adjoints satisfying some exactness conditions, in the spirit of categorical logic. The derived logical rules include some adjunction-like laws, involving the truth-values-enriched hom and tensor functors, which display a n…
The main result of this paper is that the categories of (right) hypergroups over the group and of triples, consisting of a group, its subgroup and a (right) transversal to this subgroup, are equivalent.
We give a characterisation of the extriangulated categories which admit the structure of a triangulated category. We show that these are the extriangulated categories where for every object $X$ in the extriangulated category, the morphism $0 \rightarrow X$ is a deflation and the morphism $X \rightarrow 0$ is an inflation.
Every Serre subcategory of an abelian category is assigned a unique type. The type of a Serre subcategory of a Grothendieck category is in the list: $$(0, 0), \ (0, -1), \ (1, -1), \ (0, -2), \ (1, -2), \ (2, -1), \ (+\infty, -\infty);$$ and for each $(m, -n)$ in this list, there exists a Serre subcategory such that its type is $(m, -n)$. This uses right (left) recollements of abelian categories, Tachikawa-Ohtake [TO] on strongly hereditary torsion pairs, and Geigle-Lenzing [GL] on localizing subcategories. If all the functors in a recollement of abelian categories are exact, then the recollem…
The category of small 2-categories has two monoidal structures due to John Gray: one biclosed and one closed. We propose a formalisation of the construction of the right internal and internal homs of these monoidal structures.
A folklore result in category theory is that a (weakly) Cartesian closed category with finite co-products is distributive. Usually, the proof of this small result is carried on using the fact that the exponential functor is right adjoint to the product functor. And, since functors having a right adjoint preserve co-limits, the result follows immediately. But, when we try to explicitly construct the arrows, things become a bit more involved. In rare cases, it is pretty useful to have the exact arrows that make this isomorphism to hold. The purpose of this note is to develop the explicit proof w…
We introduce (partially) ordered Grothendieck categories and apply results on their structure to the study of categories of representations of the Mackey Lie algebra of infinite matrices $\mathfrak{gl}^M\left(V,V_*\right)$. Here $\mathfrak{gl}^M\left(V,V_*\right)$ is the Lie algebra of endomorphisms of a nondegenerate pairing of countably infinite-dimensional vector spaces $V_*\otimes V\to\mathbb{K}$, where $\mathbb{K}$ is the base field. Tensor representations of $\mathfrak{gl}^M\left(V,V_*\right)$ are defined as arbitrary subquotients of finite direct sums of tensor products $(V^*)^{\otimes …
We define for each $n \geq 1$ a symmetric monoidal $(\infty, n+1)$-category $n\mathrm{Pr}^L$ whose objects we call presentable $(\infty,n)$-categories, generalizing the usual theory of presentable $(\infty,1)$-categories. We show that each object $\mathcal{C}$ in $n\mathrm{Pr}^L$ has an underlying $(\infty,n)$-category $ψ_n(\mathcal{C})$ which admits all conical colimits, and that conical colimits of right adjointable diagrams in $ψ_n(\mathcal{C})$ can be computed in terms of conical limits after passage to right adjoints.
Skew-monoidal categories arise when the associator and the left and right units of a monoidal category are, in a specific way, not invertible. We prove that the closed skew-monoidal structures on the category of right R-modules are precisely the right bialgebroids over the ring R. These skew-monoidal structures induce quotient skew-monoidal structures on the category of R-R-bimodules and this leads to the following generalization: Opmonoidal monads on a monoidal category correspond to skew-monoidal structures with the same unit object which are compatible with the ordinary monoidal structure b…
We introduce a new categorical framework for studying derived functors, and in particular for comparing composites of left and right derived functors. Our central observation is that model categories are the objects of a double category whose vertical and horizontal arrows are left and right Quillen functors, respectively, and that passage to derived functors is functorial at the level of this double category. The theory of conjunctions and mates in double categories, which generalizes the theory of adjunctions and mates in 2-categories, then gives us canonical ways to compare composites of le…
In this paper we study categories $(F,\mathbf{C},\mathbf{D})$ and $(\mathbb{F},\mathbf{C},\mathbf{Set})$ and prove them to be fibred on $\mathbf{C}$. Then we examine Grothendieck construction in the context of an ordinary functor $F: \mathbf{C} \rightarrow \mathbf{D}$ through the concept of trivial categorification, using an appropriate functor $\mathbf{F}: \mathbf{C} \xrightarrow{F} \mathbf{D} \xrightarrow{I} \mathbf{Cat}$ to construct $\int_{\mathbf{C}^{op}} \bar{\mathbf{F}}$. This category characterizes a functor as an abstract right category action while its dual $\mathcal{X} \rtimes_{\mat…
Gillespie's Theorem gives a systematic way to construct model category structures on $\mathscr{C}( \mathscr{M} )$, the category of chain complexes over an abelian category $\mathscr{M}$. We can view $\mathscr{C}( \mathscr{M} )$ as the category of representations of the quiver $\cdots \rightarrow 2 \rightarrow 1 \rightarrow 0 \rightarrow -1 \rightarrow -2 \rightarrow \cdots$ with the relations that two consecutive arrows compose to $0$. This is a self-injective quiver with relations, and we generalise Gillespie's Theorem to other such quivers with relations. There is a large family of these, an…
We generalize the definition of satellites with respect to presheaves (and copresheaves) with trace in the sense of Inassaridze; a presheaf with trace is replaced by a graph with a pair of diagrams defined on it. We show that the right satellite functor is left adjoint to the left satellite functor, and that a functor having a right (left) adjoint preserves right (left) satellites. In particular cases the construction of satellites is given.
We study right quasi-representable differential graded bimodules as quasi-functors between dg-categories. We prove that a quasi-functor has a left adjoint if and only if it is left quasi-representable.
Let $k$ be a field. We show that locally presentable, $k$-linear categories $\mathcal{C}$ dualizable in the sense that the identity functor can be recovered as $\coprod_i x_i\otimes f_i$ for objects $x_i\in \mathcal{C}$ and left adjoints $f_i$ from $\mathcal{C}$ to $\mathrm{Vect}_k$ are products of copies of $\mathrm{Vect}_k$. This partially confirms a conjecture by Brandenburg, the author and T. Johnson-Freyd. Motivated by this, we also characterize the Grothendieck categories containing an object $x$ with the property that every object is a copower of $x$: they are precisely the categories o…
Given a DG-category A we introduce the bar category of modules Modbar(A). It is a DG-enhancement of the derived category D(A) of A which is isomorphic to the category of DG A-modules with A-infinity morphisms between them. However, it is defined intrinsically in the language of DG-categories and requires no complex machinery or sign conventions of A-infinity categories. We define for these bar categories Tensor and Hom bifunctors, dualisation functors, and a convolution of twisted complexes. The intended application is to working with DG-bimodules as enhancements of exact functors between tria…
We construct a flagged $\infty$-category ${\sf Corr}$ of $\infty$-categories and bimodules among them. We prove that ${\sf Corr}$ classifies exponentiable fibrations. This representability of exponentiable fibrations extends that established by Lurie of both coCartesian fibrations and Cartesian fibrations, as they are classified by the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories and its opposite, respectively. We introduce the flagged $\infty$-subcategories ${\sf LCorr}$ and ${\sf RCorr}$ of ${\sf Corr}$, whose morphisms are those bimodules which are \emph{left final} and \emph{right initial}, re…
Given a horizontal monoid M in a duoidal category F, we examine the relationship between bimonoid structures on M and monoidal structures on the category of right M-modules which lift the vertical monoidal structure of F. We obtain our result using a variant of the Tannaka adjunction. The approach taken utilizes hom-enriched categories rather than categories on which a monoidal category acts ("actegories"). The requirement of enrichment in F itself demands the existence of some internal homs, leading to the consideration of convolution for duoidal categories. Proving that certain hom-functors …
This paper is the first in a series of two papers, $\mathbf{Z}$-Categories I and $\mathbf{Z}$-Categories II, which develop the notion of $\mathbf{Z}$-category, the natural bi-infinite analog to strict $ω$-categories, and show that the $\left(\infty,1\right)$-category of spectra relates to the $\left(\infty,1\right)$-category of homotopy coherent $\mathbf{Z}$-categories as the pointed groupoids. In this work we provide a $2$-categorical treatment of the combinatorial spectra of \cite{Kan} and argue that this description is a simplicial avatar of the abiding notion of homotopy coherent $\mathbf{…
We define a traced pseudomonoid as a pseudomonoid in a monoidal bicategory equipped with extra structure, giving a new characterisation of Cauchy complete traced monoidal categories as algebraic structures in Prof, the monoidal bicategory of profunctors. This enables reasoning about the trace using the graphical calculus for monoidal bicategories, which we illustrate in detail. We apply our techniques to study traced ∗-autonomous categories, proving a new equivalence result between the left ⊗-trace and the right ⅋-trace, and describing a new condition under which traced ͨ…
In this paper, we introduce quotients of exact categories by percolating subcategories. This approach extends earlier localization theories by Cardenas and Schlichting for exact categories, allowing new examples. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a percolating subcategory of an exact category $\mathcal{E}$, the quotient $\mathcal{E} {/\mkern-6mu/} \mathcal{A}$ is constructed in two steps. In the first step, we associate a set $S_\mathcal{A} \subseteq \operatorname{Mor}(\mathcal{E})$ to $\mathcal{A}$ and consider the localization $\mathcal{E}[S^{-1}_\mathcal{A}]$. In general, $\mathcal{E}[S_\mathcal{A}^{-1}…
In this paper we continue the study of triangular matrix categories $\mathbfΛ=\left[ \begin{smallmatrix} \mathcal{T} & 0 \\ M & \mathcal{U} \end{smallmatrix}\right]$ initiated in [21]. First, given an additive category $\mathcal{C}$ and an ideal $\mathcal{I}_{\mathcal{B}}$ in $\mathcal{C}$, we prove a well known result that there is a canonical recollement $\xymatrix{\mathrm{Mod}(\mathcal{C}/\mathcal{I}_{\mathcal{B}})\ar[r]_{} & \mathrm{Mod}(\mathcal{C})\ar[r]_{}\ar@<-1ex>[l]_{}\ar@<1ex>[l]_{} & \mathrm{Mod}(\mathcal{B})\ar@<-1ex>[l]_{}\ar@<1ex>[l]_{}}$. We show that given a recollement betwee…
K. S. S. Nambooripad intoduced nornal categories to enable to describe the structure of regular semigroups fully. In this paper we describe the ideal categories of the regular semigroup $OX_n,$ of non-invertible order-preserving transformations on a finite chain $X_n=\{1\leq 2\leq \cdots \leq n \}$ which are normal categories. Further it is shown that the principal left ideal category of $OX_n$ as the power set category $P_o(X_n)$ of $OX_n$ and the principal right ideal category as $\prod_o(X_n)$ category of ordered partitions of $X_n$ and described the cone semigroup $T\mathscr L(OX_n)$ and p…
I verify the existence of right Bousfield localizations of right semimodel categories, and I apply this to construct a model of the homotopy limit of a left Quillen presheaf as a right semimodel category.
The categorical formulation of the Eilenberg-Watts calculus relates, for any pair of finite categories M and N, the finite categories Fun^{le}(N,M) and Fun^{re}(N,M) of linear left or right exact functors and the Deligne product \bar N \boxtimes M by adjoint equivalences. We establish a variant of this calculus for the case that the finite categories M and N are module categories over a finite tensor category. This provides in particular canonical and explicitly computable equivalences between categories of left or right exact module functors (or, more generally, balanced functors) and certain…
We construct a model structure on the category $\mathrm{DblCat}$ of double categories and double functors. Unlike previous model structures for double categories, it recovers the homotopy theory of 2-categories through the horizontal embedding $\mathbb{H}\colon2\mathrm{Cat}\to\mathrm{DblCat}$, which is both left and right Quillen, and homotopically fully faithful. Furthermore, we show that Lack's model structure on $2\mathrm{Cat}$ is both left- and right-induced along $\mathbb{H}$ from our model structure on $\mathrm{DblCat}$. In addition, we obtain a $2\mathrm{Cat}$-enrichment of our model st…
In this paper we construct a symmetric monoidal closed model category of coherently commutative monoidal categories. The main aim of this paper is to establish a Quillen equivalence between a model category of coherently commutative monoidal categories and a natural model category of Permutative (or strict symmetric monoidal) categories, $\mathbf{Perm}$, which is not a symmetric monoidal closed model category. The right adjoint of this Quillen equivalence is the classical Segal's Nerve functor.
We investigate the categories of weak maps associated to an algebraic weak factorisation system (AWFS) in the sense of Grandis-Tholen. For any AWFS on a category with an initial object, cofibrant replacement forms a comonad, and the category of (left) weak maps associated to the AWFS is by definition the Kleisli category of this comonad. We exhibit categories of weak maps as a kind of "homotopy category", that freely adjoins a section for every "acyclic fibration" (=right map) of the AWFS; and using this characterisation, we give an alternate description of categories of weak maps in terms of …
Let $\mathcal C$ be a $\mathcal V$-enriched model category. We say that an object $x$ of $\mathcal C$ is homotopy tiny if the total right derived functor of $\mathcal C(x, -) : \mathcal{C} \rightarrow {\mathcal V}$ preserves homotopy weighted colimits. Let $\mathcal C_0$ be a full subcategory of $\mathcal C$ all of whose objects are homotopy tiny. Our main result says that the homotopy category of the category generated by $\mathcal C_0$ under weak equivalences and homotopy weighted colimits is equivalent to the homotopy category of the category $\mathcal V^{\mathcal C_0^{op}}$ of $\mathcal V$…
If $\mathcal{M}$ is a finite abelian category and $\mathbf{T}$ is a linear right exact monad on $\mathcal{M}$, then the category $\mathbf{T}\mbox{-mod}$ of $\mathbf{T}$-modules is a finite abelian category. We give an explicit formula of the Nakayama functor of $\mathbf{T}\mbox{-mod}$ under the assumption that the underlying functor of the monad $\mathbf{T}$ has a double left adjoint and a double right adjoint. As applications, we deduce formulas of the Nakayama functor of the center of a finite bimodule category and the dual of a finite tensor category. Some examples from the Hopf algebra the…
Every right adjoint functor between presentable $\infty$-categories is shown to decompose canonically as a coreflection, followed by, possibly transfinitely many, monadic functors. Furthermore, the coreflection part is given a presentation in terms of a functorial iterated colimit. Background material, examples, and the relation to homology localization and completion are discussed as well.
For coalgebras $C$ over a field, we study when the categories ${}^C\Mm$ of left $C$-comodules and $\Mm^C$ of right $C$-comodules are symmetric categories, in the sense that there is a duality between the categories of finitely presented unitary left $R$-modules and finitely presented unitary left $L$-modules, where $R$ and $L$ are the functor rings associated to the finitely accessible categories ${}^C\Mm$ and $\Mm^C$.
We extend the theory of d-categories, by providing an explicit description of the right mapping spaces of the d-homotopy category of an $\infty$-category. Using this description, we deduce an invariant $\infty$-categorical characterization of the d-homotopy category. We then proceed to develop an analogous theory of d-operads, which model $\infty$-operads with (d -1)-truncated multi-mapping spaces, and prove analogous results for them.
This is a survey paper on the connection of enriched category theory over a quantale and tropical mathematics. Quantales or complete idempotent semirings, as well as matrices with coefficients in them, are fundamental objects in both fields. We first explain standard category-theoretic constructions on matrices, namely composition, right extension, right lifting and the Isbell hull. Along the way, we review known reformulations (due to Elliott and Willerton) of tropical polytopes, directed tight spans and the Legendre--Fenchel transform by means of these constructions, illustrating their ubiqu…
