Symplectic unitary representations for the Poincaré group are studied. The formalism is based on the noncommutative structure of the star-product, and using group theory approach as a guide, a consistent physical theory in phase space is constructed. The state of a quantum mechanics system is described by a quasi-probability amplitude that is in association with the Wigner function. As a result, the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations are derived in phase space. As an application, we study the Dirac equation with electromagnetic interaction in phase space.
In this work we study some symplectic submanifolds in the cotangent bundle of a factorizable Lie group defined by second class constraints. By applying the Dirac method, we study many issues of these spaces as fundamental Dirac brackets, symmetries, and collective dynamics. This last item allows to study integrability as inherited from a system on the whole cotangent bundle, leading in a natural way to the AKS theory for integrable systems.
For the description of space-time fermions, Dirac-Kähler fields (inhomogeneous differential forms) provide an interesting alternative to the Dirac spinor fields. In this paper we develop a similar concept within the symplectic geometry of phase-spaces. Rather than on space-time, symplectic Dirac-Kähler fields can be defined on the classical phase-space of any Hamiltonian system. They are equivalent to an infinite family of metaplectic spinor fields, i.e. spinors of Sp(2N), in the same way an ordinary Dirac-Kähler field is equivalent to a (finite) mulitplet of Dirac spinors. The results are int…
In the Standard Model of electroweak interactions the fundamental fermions acquire masses by the Yukawa interaction with the (spin 0) Higgs field. In our model spin 1/2 fermions acquire masses by an interaction with (spin 1) gauge field with symplectic symmetry.
In this paper a detailed Hamiltonian analysis of three-dimensional gravity without dynamics proposed by V. Hussain is performed. We report the complete structure of the constraints and the Dirac brackets are explicitly computed. In addition, the Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic approach is developed; we report the complete set of Faddeev-Jackiw constraints and the generalized brackets, then we show that the Dirac and the generalized Faddeev-Jackiw brackets coincide to each other. Finally, the similarities and advantages between Faddeev-Jackiw and Dirac's formalism are briefly discussed.
In symplectic mechanics, the magnetic term describing the interaction between a charged particle and an external magnetic field has to be introduced by hand. On the contrary, in generalised complex geometry, such magnetic terms in the symplectic form arise naturally by means of B-transformations. Here we prove that, regarding classical phase space as a generalised complex manifold, the transformation law for the symplectic form under the action of a weak magnetic field gives rise to Dirac's prescription for Poisson brackets in the presence of constraints.
Jacobi's method is a well-known algorithm in linear algebra to diagonalize symmetric matrices by successive elementary rotations. We report about the generalization of these elementary rotations towards canonical transformations acting in Hamiltonian phase spaces. This generalization allows to use Jacobi's method in order to compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors of Hamiltonian (and skew-Hamiltonian) matrices with either purely real or purely imaginary eigenvalues by successive elementary symplectic "decoupling"-transformations.
Inspired by the results on symmetries of the symplectic Dirac operator, we realize symplectic spinor fields and the symplectic Dirac operator in the framework of (the double cover of) homogeneous projective structure in two real dimensions. The symmetry group of the homogeneous model of the double cover of projective geometry in two real dimensions is $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}(3,{\mathbb R})$.
The dynamical structure of topologically massive gravity in the context of the Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic approach is studied. It is shown that this method allows to avoid some ambiguities arising in the study of the gauge structure via the Dirac formalism. In particular, the complete set of constraints and the gauge symmetry generators of the theory are obtained straightforwardly via the zero-modes of the symplectic matrix. In order to obtain the generalized Faddeev-Jackiw brackets and calculate the local physical degrees of freedom of this model, an appropriate gauge-fixing procedure is intro…
We study the spectral statistics of the Dirac operator on a rose-shaped graph---a graph with a single vertex and all bonds connected at both ends to the vertex. We formulate a secular equation that generically determines the eigenvalues of the Dirac rose graph, which is seen to generalise the secular equation for a star graph with Neumann boundary conditions. We derive approximations to the spectral pair correlation function at large and small values of spectral spacings, in the limit as the number of bonds approaches infinity, and compare these predictions with results of numerical calculatio…
We study gauge transformations of Dirac structures and the relationship between gauge and Morita equivalences of Poisson manifolds. We describe how the symplectic structure of a symplectic groupoid is affected by a gauge transformation of the Poisson structure on its identity section, and prove that gauge-equivalent integrable Poisson structures are Morita equivalent. As an example, we study certain generic sets of Poisson structures on Riemann surfaces: we find complete gauge-equivalence invariants for such structures which, on the 2-sphere, yield a complete invariant of Morita equivalence.
A basic problem in linear particle optics is to find a symplectic transformation that brings the (symmetric) beam matrix to a special diagonal form, called normal form. The conventional way to do this involves an eigenvalue-decomposition of a matrix related to the beam matrix, and may be applied to the case of 1, 2 or 3 particle degrees of freedom. For 2 degrees of freedom, a different normalization method involving "real Dirac matrices" has recently been proposed. In the present article, the mathematics of real Dirac matrices is presented differently. Another normalization recipe is given, an…
We construct in projective differential geometry of the real dimension $2$ higher symmetry algebra of the symplectic Dirac operator ${D}\kern-0.5em\raise0.22ex\hbox{/}_s$ acting on symplectic spinors. The higher symmetry differential operators correspond to the solution space of a class of projectively invariant overdetermined operators of arbitrarily high order acting on symmetric tensors. The higher symmetry algebra structure corresponds to a completely prime primitive ideal having as its associated variety the minimal nilpotent orbit of $\mathfrak{sl}(3,{\mathbb{R}})$.
By using the canonical and symplectic approaches an (nonstandard) alternative action describing linearized gravity is studied. We identify the complete set of Dirac's constraints, the counting of physical degrees of freedom is performed and the Dirac brackets are constructed. Furthermore, the symplectic analysis is developed which includes the complete set of Faddeev-Jackiw constraints and a symplectic tensor; from that symplectic matrix we show that the generalized Faddeev-Jackiw brackets and the Dirac ones coincide to each other. With all these results at hand, we prove that the number of ph…
Using tools from Dirac geometry and through an explicit construction, we show that every Poisson homogeneous space of any Poisson Lie group admits an integration to a symplectic groupoid. Our theorem follows from a more general result which relates, for a principal bundle $M\to M/H$, integrations of a Dirac structure on $M/H$ to $H$-admissible integrations of its pullback Dirac structure on $M$ by pre-symplectic groupoids. Our construction gives a distinguished class of explicit real or holomorphic pre-symplectic and symplectic groupoids over semi-simple Lie groups and some of their homogeneou…
This work contains a brief and elementary exposition of the foundations of Poisson and symplectic geometries, with an emphasis on applications for Hamiltonian systems with second-class constraints. In particular, we clarify the geometric meaning of the Dirac bracket on a symplectic manifold and provide a proof of the Jacobi identity on a Poisson manifold. A number of applications of the Dirac bracket are described: applications for the proof of the compatibility of a system consisting of differential and algebraic equations, as well as applications for the problem of reduction of a Hamiltonian…
We study the restriction to a family of second class constrained submanifolds in the cotangent bundle of a double Lie group, equipped with a 2-cocycle extended symplectic form, building the corresponding Dirac brackets. It is shown that, for a 2-cocycle vanishing on each isotropic subspaces of the associated Manin triple, the Dirac bracket contains no traces of the cocycle. We also investigate the restriction of the left translation action of the double Lie group on its cotangent bundle, where it fails in to be a symmetry a canonical transformation. However, the hamiltonian symmetry is restore…
In this paper we use the canonical complex structure $\mathbb{J}$ on $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ to introduce a twist of the symplectic Dirac operator. As a matter of fact, these operators can be interpreted as the bosonic analogues of the Dirac operators on a Hermitian manifold. Moreover, we prove that the algebra of these symplectic Dirac operators is isomorphic to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(1,2)$ which leads to the Howe dual pair $(\mathsf{U}(n),\mathfrak{su}(1,2))$.
The symplectic analysis of a four dimensional $BF$ theory in the context of the Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic approach is performed. It is shown that this method is more economical than Dirac's formalism. In particular, the complete set of Faddeev-Jackiw constraints and the generalized Faddeev-Jackiw brackets are reported. In addition, we show that the generalized Faddeev-Jackiw brackets and the Dirac ones coincide to each other. Finally, the similarities and advantages between Faddeev-Jackiw method and Dirac's formalism are briefly discussed.
Coherently with the principle of analogy suggested by Dirac, we describe a general setting for reducing a classical dynamics, and the role of the Noether theorem -- connecting symmetries with constants of the motion -- within a reduction. This is the first of two papers, and it focuses on the reduction within the Poisson and the symplectic formalism.
We establish soliton-like asymptotics for finite energy solutions to the Dirac equation coupled to a relativistic particle. Any solution with initial state close to the solitary manifold, converges in long time limit to a sum of traveling wave and outgoing free wave. The convergence holds in global energy norm. The proof uses spectral theory and the symplectic projection onto solitary manifold in the Hilbert phase space.
In this paper we study the sp(2m)-invariant Dirac operator Ds which acts on symplectic spinors, from an orthogonal point of view. By this we mean that we will focus on the subalgebra so(m), as this will allow us to derive branching rules for the space of 1-homogeneous polynomial solutions for the operator Ds (hence generalising the classical Fischer decomposition in harmonic analysis for a vector variable in Rm). To arrive at this result we use techniques from representation theory, including the transvector algebra Z(sp(4),so(4)) and tensor products of Verma modules.
Kinetic theory of Dirac fermions is studied within the matrix valued differential forms method. It is based on the symplectic form derived by employing the semiclassical wave packet build of the positive energy solutions of the Dirac equation. A satisfactory definition of the distribution matrix elements imposes to work in the basis where the helicity is diagonal which is also needed to attain the massless limit. We show that the kinematic Thomas precession correction can be studied straightforwardly within this approach. It contributes on an equal footing with the Berry gauge fields. In fact …
We describe an averaging procedure on a Dirac manifold, with respect to a class of compatible actions of a compact Lie group. Some averaging theorems on the existence of invariant realizations of Poisson structures around (singular) symplectic leaves are derived. We show that the construction of coupling Dirac structures (invariant with respect to locally Hamiltonian group actions) on a Poisson foliation is related with a special class of exact gauge transformations.
We construct a symplectic realisation of the twisted Poisson structure on the phase space of an electric charge in the background of an arbitrary smooth magnetic monopole density in three dimensions. We use the extended phase space variables to study the classical and quantum dynamics of charged particles in arbitrary magnetic fields by constructing a suitable Hamiltonian that reproduces the Lorentz force law for the physical degrees of freedom. In the source-free case the auxiliary variables can be eliminated via Hamiltonian reduction, while for non-zero monopole densities they are necessary …
The Courant-Snyder theory for two-dimensional coupled linear optics is presented, based on the systematic use of the real representation of the Dirac matrices. Since any real $4\times 4$-matrix can be expressed as a linear combination of these matrices, the presented Ansatz allows for a comprehensive and complete treatment of two-dim. linear coupling. A survey of symplectic transformations in two dimensions is presented. A subset of these transformations is shown to be identical to rotations and Lorentz boosts in Minkowski space-time. The transformation properties of the classical state vector…
In this paper we discuss a simplified approach to the symplectic Clifford algebra, the symplectic Clifford group and the symplectic spinor by first extending the Heisenberg algebra. We do this by adding a new idempotent element to the algebra. It turns out that this element is the projection operator onto the Dirac standard ket. When this algebra is transformed into the Fock algebra, the corresponding idempotent is the projector onto the vacuum. These additional elements give a very simple way to write down expressions for symplectic spinors as elements of the symplectic Clifford algebra. When…
Given a Poisson (or more generally Dirac) manifold $P$, there are two approaches to its geometric quantization: one involves a circle bundle $Q$ over $P$ endowed with a Jacobi (or Jacobi-Dirac) structure; the other one involves a circle bundle with a (pre-) contact groupoid structure over the (pre-) symplectic groupoid of $P$. We study the relation between these two prequantization spaces. We show that the circle bundle over the (pre-) symplectic groupoid of $P$ is obtained from the groupoid of $Q$ via an $S^1$ reduction that preserves both the groupoid and the geometric structure.
We obtain a Hitchin-Kobayashi-type correspondence for symplectic vortex equations, with the target a Kahler cone over a compact Sasakian manifold. We show that the correspondence reduces to studying the existence and uniqueness of Kazdan-Warner equations. Using this, we construct a map between the moduli space of solutions to the symplectic vortex equations and effective divisors.
Suppose that $(M,E)$ is a compact contact manifold, and that a compact Lie group $G$ acts on $M$ transverse to the contact distribution $E$. In an earlier paper, we defined a $G$-transversally elliptic Dirac operator $\dirac$, constructed using a Hermitian metric $h$ and connection $\nabla$ on the symplectic vector bundle $E\rightarrow M$, whose equivariant index is well-defined as a generalized function on $G$, and gave a formula for its index. By analogy with the geometric quantization of symplectic manifolds, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded Hilbert space $Q(M)=\ker \dirac \oplus \ker \dirac^{*}$ …
The canonical reduction algorithm is applied to Maxwell and Yang-Mills equations considered as Hamiltonian systems on some fiber bundles with symplectic and connection structures. The minimum interaction principle proved to have geometric origin within the reduction method devised.
We show that a symplectic reduction of the symmetric representation of the generalized $n$-dimensional rigid body equations yields the $n$-dimensional Euler equation. This result provides an alternative to the more elaborate relationship between these equations established by Bloch, Crouch, Marsden, and Ratiu. Specifically, we exploit the inherent $\mathsf{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$-symmetry in the symmetric representation to present its relationship with the Euler equation via symplectic reduction facilitated by the dual pair recently developed by Skerritt and Vizman.
In this paper we present novel integrable symplectic maps, associated with ordinary difference equations, and show how they determine, in a remarkably diverse manner, the integrability, including Lax pairs and the explicit solutions, for integrable partial difference equations which are the discrete counterparts of integrable partial differential equations of Korteweg-de Vries-type (KdV-type). As a consequence it is demonstrated that several distinct Hamiltonian systems lead to one and the same difference equation by means of the Liouville integrability framework. Thus, these integrable symple…
In this paper we study the symplectic and Poisson geometry of moduli spaces of flat connections over quilted surfaces. These are surfaces where the structure group varies from region to region in the surface, and where a reduction (or relation) of structure occurs along the boundaries of the regions. Our main theoretical tool is a new form moment-map reduction in the context of Dirac geometry. This reduction framework allows us to use very general relations of structure groups, and to investigate both the symplectic and Poisson geometry of the resulting moduli spaces from a unified perspective…
We complete the list of normal forms for effective 3-forms with constant coefficients with respect to the natural action of symplectomorphisms in \mathbb{R}^6. We show that the 3-form which corresponds to the Special Lagrangian equation is among the new members of the classification. The symplectic symmetry algebras and their Cartan prolongations for these forms are computed and a local classification theorem for the corresponding Monge-Ampere equations is proved.
For a scalar evolution equation $u_t=K(t,x,u,u_x,\ldots, u_n), n\geq 2$ the cohomology spaces $H^{1,s}({\mathcal R}^\infty)$ vanishes for $s\geq 3$ while the space $H^{1,2}({\mathcal R}^\infty)$ is isomorphic to the space of variational operators. The cohomology space $H^{1,2}({\mathcal R}^\infty)$ is also shown to be isomorphic to the space of symplectic operators for $u_t=K$ for which the equation is Hamiltonian. Third order scalar evolution equations admitting a first order symplectic (or variational) operator are characterized. The symplectic nature of the potential form of a bi-Hamiltonia…
We propose a family of reliable symplectic integrators adapted to the Discrete Non-Linear Schrödinger equation; based on an idea of Yoshida (H. Yoshida, Construction of higher order symplectic integrators, Physics Letters A, 150, 5,6,7, (1990), pp. 262.) we can construct high order numerical schemes, that result to be explicit methods and thus very fast. The performances of the integrators are discussed, studied as functions of the integration time step and compared with some non symplectic methods.
The $k$-symplectic structures appear in the geometric study of the partial differential equations of classical field theories. Meanwhile, we present a new application of the $k$-symplectic structures to investigate a type of systems of first-order ordinary differential equations, the $k$-symplectic Lie systems. In particular, we analyse the properties, e.g. the superposition rules, of a new example of $k$-symplectic Lie system which occurs in the analysis of diffusion equations.
Results on symplectic spinors and their higher spin versions, concerning representation theory and cohomology properties are presented. Exterior forms with values in the symplectic spinors are decomposed into irreducible modules including finding the hidden symmetry (Schur--Weyl--Howe type duality) given by a representation of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ in this case. We also determine ranges of the induced exterior symplectic spinor derivatives when they are restricted to bundles induced by the irreducible submodules mentioned. This duality is used to decompose curvature tensor…
