We study the well-posedness of radial solutions for general nonlinear hyperbolic systems in three dimensions. We give a proof of the global existence of radial solutions for general semilinear hyperbolic systems in 3D under null condition, with small scaling invariant $\dot{W}^{2,1}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ data. We obtain a bilinear estimate that is effective to the hyperbolic systems which do not have any time decay. It allows us to achieve the boundedness of the weighted BV norm of the radial solution.
We revisit a method introduced by Tartar for proving global well-posedness of a semilinear hyperbolic system with null quadratic source in one space dimension. A remarkable point is that, since no dispersion effect is available for 1D hyperbolic systems, Tartar's approach is entirely based on spatial localization and finite speed of propagation.
We consider semilinear elliptic problems on two-dimensional hyperbolic space involving critical growth. We first establish the Palais-Smale(P-S) condition and using (P-S) condition we obtain existence of solutions. In addition, we also explore existence of infinitely many sign changing solutions as well.
In this article we will study the nondegeneracy properties of positive finite energy solutions of a semilinear elliptic equation in the N-dimensional Hyperbolic space. We will show that the degeneracy occurs only in an N dimensional subspace. We will prove that the positive solutions are nondegenerate in the case of geodesic balls.
We investigate the asymptotic behavior, as t goes to infinity, for a semilinear hyperbolic equation with asymptotically smal dissipation and convex potential. We prove that if the damping term behaves like K/t^αfor t large enough, k>0 and 0</alpha<1 then every global solution converges weakly to an equilibrium point. This result is a positive answer to a question left open in the paper [A. Cabot and P. Frankel, Asymptotics for some semilinear hyperbolic equation with non-autonomous damping. J. Differential Equations 252 (2012) 294-322.]
In this paper, we consider systems of semilinear elliptic equations \displaystyle -Δ_{\mathbb{H}^{N}}u=|v|^{p-1}v, \displaystyle -Δ_{\mathbb{H}^{N}}v=|u|^{q-1}u, in the whole of Hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{N}$. We establish decay estimates and symmetry properties of positive solutions. Unlike the corresponding problem in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^N$, we prove that there exists a nonnegative nontrivial solution of problem.
The paper gives a comprehensive study of Inertial Manifolds for hyperbolic relaxations of an abstract semilinear parabolic equation in a Hilbert space. A new scheme of constructing Inertial Manifolds for such type of problems is suggested and optimal spectral gap conditions which guarantee their existence are established. Moreover, the dependence of the constructed manifolds on the relaxation parameter in the case of the parabolic singular limit is also studied.
We prove small-data global existence to semi-linear wave equations on hyperbolic space of dimension greater than or equal to three, for nonlinearities that have the form of a sufficiently high integer power of the solution. We also prove the existence and asymptotic completeness of wave operators in this setting.
We consider a general hyperbolic model of chemotaxis in the multidimensional case. For this system we show the global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem and we determine their asymptotic behavior. Since this model does not enter in the classical framework of dissipative problems, we analyze it combining the features of the hyperbolic and the parabolic parts and using detailed decay estimates of the Green function.
We study mild solutions of a class of stochastic partial differential equations, involving operators with polynomially bounded coefficients. We consider semilinear equations under suitable hyperbolicity hypotheses on the linear part. We provide conditions on the initial data and on the stochastic terms, namely, on the associated spectral measure, so that mild solutions exist and are unique in suitably chosen functional classes. More precisely, function-valued solutions are obtained, as well as a regularity result.
We consider systems of semilinear wave equations in three space dimensions with quadratic nonlinear terms not satisfying the null condition. We prove small data global existence of the classical solution under a new structural condition related to the weak null condition. For two-component systems satisfying this condition, we also observe a new kind of asymptotic behavior: Only one component is dissipated and the other one behaves like a free solution in the large time.
We consider the inverse problem of determining a general nonlinear term appearing in a semilinear hyperbolic equation on a Riemannian manifold with boundary $(M,g)$ of dimension $n=2,3$. We prove results of unique recovery of the nonlinear term $F(t,x,u)$, appearing in the equation $\partial_t^2u-Δ_gu+F(t,x,u)=0$ on $(0,T)\times M$ with $T>0$, from some partial knowledge of the solutions $u$ on the boundary of the time-space cylindrical manifold $(0,T)\times M$ or on the lateral boundary $(0,T)\times\partial M$. We determine the expression $F(t,x,u)$ both on the boundary $x\in\partial M$ and i…
We study radial symmetry of large solutions of the semi-linear elliptic problem Δu + \nabla h.\nabla u = f(|x|,u), and we provide sharp conditions under which the problem has a radial solution. The result is independent of the rate of growth of the solution at infinity.
We provide a rigorous justication of nonlinear geometric optics expansions for reflecting \emph{pulses} in space dimensions $n>1$. The pulses arise as solutions to variable coefficient semilinear first-order hyperbolic systems. The justification applies to $N\times N$ systems with $N$ interacting pulses which depend on phases that may be nonlinear. The \emph{coherence} assumption made in a number of earlier works is dropped. We consider problems in which incoming pulses are generated from pulse boundary data as well as problems in which a single outgoing pulse reflects off a possibly curved bo…
We prove global well-posedness and scattering in $H^1$ for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} &(i\partial_t+Δ_\g)u=u|u|^{2σ}; &u(0)=ϕ, \end{cases} \end{equation*} on the hyperbolic spaces $\H^d$, $d\geq 2$, for exponents $σ\in(0,2/(d-2))$. The main unexpected conclusion is scattering to linear solutions in the case of small exponents $σ$; for comparison, on Euclidean spaces scattering in $H^1$ is not known for any exponent $σ\in(1/d,2/d]$ and is known to fail for $σ\in(0,1/d]$. Our main ingredients are certain noneuclidean global in time Strichartz e…
We investigate existence and nonexistence of global in time nonnegative solutions to the semilinear heat equation, with a reaction term of the type $e^{μt}u^p$ ($μ\in\mathbb{R}, p>1$), posed on cones of the hyperbolic space. Under a certain assumption on $μ$ and $p$, related to the bottom of the spectrum of $-Δ$ in $\mathbb H^n$, we prove that any solution blows up in finite time, for any nontrivial nonnegative initial datum. Instead, if the parameters $μ$ and $p$ satisfy the opposite condition we have: (a) blow-up when the initial datum is large enough, (b) existence of global solutions when …
We consider in this paper a large class of perturbed semilinear wave equations with critical (in the conformal transform sense) power nonlinearity. We will show that the blow-up rate of any singular solution is given by the solution of the non-perturbed associated ODE. The result in the radial case has been proved in [13]. The same approach will be followed here, but the main difference is to construct a Lyapunov functional in similarity variables valid in the non-radial case, which is far from being trivial. That functional is obtained by combining some classical estimates and a new identity …
We consider the semilinear wave equation in the radial case with conformal subcritical power nonlinearity. If we consider a blow-up point different from the origin, then we exhibit a new Lyapunov functional which is a perturbation of the one dimensional case and extend all our previous results known in the one-dimensional case. In particular, we show that the blow-up set near non-zero non-characteristic points is of class $C^1$, and that the set of characteristic points is made of concentric spheres in finite number in $\{\frac 1R \le |x|\le R\}$ for any $R>1$.
In this work we study permanence of hyperbolicity for autonomous differential equations under nonautonomous random/stochastic perturbations. For the linear case, we study robustness and existence of exponential dichotomies for nonautonomous random dynamical systems. Next, we establish a result on the persistence of hyperbolic equilibria for nonlinear differential equations. We show that for each nonautonomous random perturbation of an autonomous semilinear problem with a hyperbolic equilibrium there exists a bounded \textit{random hyperbolic solution} for the associated nonlinear nonautonomous…
In this article we discuss the maximum principle for the linear equation and the sign changing solutions of the semilinear equation with the Higgs potential. Numerical simulations indicate that the bubbles for the semilinear Klein-Gordon equation in the de Sitter spacetime are created and apparently exist for all times.
In this paper we investigate the zero-relaxation limit of the following multi-D semilinear hyperbolic system in pseudodifferential form: W_{t}(x,t) + (1/epsilon) A(x,D) W(x,t) = (1/epsilon^2) B(x,W(x,t)) + (1/epsilon) D(W(x,t)) + E(W(x,t)). We analyse the singular convergence, as epsilon tends to 0, in the case which leads to a limit system of parabolic type. The analysis is carried out by using the following steps: (i) We single out algebraic ``structure conditions'' on the full system, motivated by formal asymptotics, by some examples of discrete velocity models in kinetic theories. (ii) We …
This paper is devoted to the study of semi-stable radial solutions $u\in H^1(B_1)$ of $-Δu=g(u) {in} B_1\setminus \{0\}$, where $g\in C^1(R)$ is a general nonlinearity and $B_1$ is the unit ball of $R^N$. We establish sharp pointwise estimates for such solutions. As an application of these results, we obtain optimal pointwise estimates for the extremal solution and its derivatives (up to order three) of the semilinear elliptic equation $-Δu=λf(u)$, posed in $B_1$, with Dirichlet data $u|_{\partial B_1}=0$, and a continuous, positive, nondecreasing and convex function $f$ on $[0,\infty)$ such t…
In this article we consider the system of equations Δu_{i}=p_{i}(x)f_{i}(u_{1},...,u_{d}) for i=1,...,d on R^{N}, N\geq3 and d\in{1,2,3,4,...}. We prove that the considered system has a bounded positive entire solution under some conditions on p_{i} and f_{i}. Also, we give a necessary condition as well as a sufficient condition for a positive radial solution to be large. The method of proving theorems is essentially based on a successive approximation. Furthermore, a non-radially symmetric solution is obtained by using a lower and upper solution method.
Assume that $f(s) = F'(s)$ where $F$ is a double-well potential. Under certain conditions on the Lipschitz constant of $f$ on $[-1,1]$, we prove that arbitrary bounded global solutions of the semilinear equation $Δu = f(u)$ on hyperbolic space $\HH^n$ must reduce to functions of one variable provided they admit asymptotic boundary values on the infinite boundary of $\HH^n$ which are invariant under a cohomogeneity one subgroup of the group of isometries of $\HH^n$. We also prove existence of these one-dimensional solutions.
In this paper we study the global exponential stability in the $L^{2}$ norm of semilinear $1$-$d$ hyperbolic systems on a bounded domain, when the source term and the nonlinear boundary conditions are Lipschitz. We exhibit two sufficient stability conditions: an internal condition and a boundary condition. This result holds also when the source term is nonlocal. Finally, we show its robustness by extending it to global Input-to State Stability in the $L^{2}$ norm with respect to both interior and boundary disturbances.
We verify the existence of radial positive solutions for the semi-linear equation $$ -\,Δu=u^{p}\,-\,V(y)\,u^{q},\,\quad\quad u>0,\quad\quad\mbox{ in }\mathbb{R}^N$$ where $N\geq 3$, $p$ is close to $p^*:=(N+2)/(N-2)$, and $V$ is a radial smooth potential. If $q$ is super-critical, namely $q>p^*$, we prove that this Problem has a radial solution behaving like a super-position of bubbles blowing-up at the origin with different rates of concentration, provided $V(0)<0$. On the other hand, if $N/(N-2)<q<p^*$, we prove that this Problem has a radial solution behaving like a super-position of {\it …
We show that nontrivial solutions to higher and fractional order equations with certain nonlinearity are radially symmetric and nonincreasing on geodesic balls in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$ as well as on the entire space $\mathbb{H}^n$. Applying the Helgason-Fourier analysis techniques on $\mathbb{H}^n$, we develop a moving plane approach for integral equations on $\mathbb{H}^n$. We also establish the symmetry to solutions of certain equations with singular terms on Euclidean spaces. Moreover, we obtain symmetry to solutions of some semilinear equations involving fractional order deri…
In this paper, we prove the existence of non-radial solutions to the problem $-\triangle u=f(z,u)$, $u|_{\partial D}=0$ on the unit disc $D:=\{z\in \mathbb C : |z|<1\}$ with $u(z)\in \mathbb R^k$, where $f$ is a sub-linear continuous function, differentiable with respect to $u$ at zero and satisfying $f(e^{iθ}z,u) = f(z,u)$ for all $θ\in \mathbb R$, $f(z,-u)=- f(z,u)$. Under the assumption that $f$ respects additional (spacial) symmetries on $\mathbb R^k$, we investigate symmetric properties of the corresponding non-radial solutions. The abstract result is supported by a numerical example with…
We investigate stable solutions of elliptic equations of the type \begin{equation*} \left \{ \begin{aligned} (-Δ)^s u&=λf(u) \qquad {\mbox{ in $B_1 \subset \R^{n}$}} \\ u&= 0 \qquad{\mbox{ on $\partial B_1$,}}\end{aligned}\right . \end{equation*} where $n\ge2$, $s \in (0,1)$, $λ\geq 0$ and $f$ is any smooth positive superlinear function. The operator $(-Δ)^s$ stands for the fractional Laplacian, a pseudo-differential operator of order $2s$. According to the value of $λ$, we study the existence and regularity of weak solutions $u$.
We consider the equation $-Δu= |x|^α|u|^{p-1}u$ for any $α\geq 0$, either in $\mathbb R^2$ or in the unit ball $B$ of $\mathbb R^2$ centered at the origin with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. We give a sharp description of the asymptotic behavior as $p\rightarrow +\infty$ of all the radial solutions to these problems. In particular, we show that there is no uniform a priori bound (in $p$) for nodal solutions under Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. This contrasts with the recently shown fact that positive solutions have uniform a priori bounds for $α=0$ and Dirichlet boundary …
We define the radiation fields of solutions to critical semilinear wave equations in R^3 and use them to define the scattering operator. We also prove a support theorem for the radiation fields with radial initial data. This extends the well known support theorem for the Radon transform to this setting and can also be interpreted as a Paley-Wiener theorem for the distorted nonlinear Fourier transform of radial functions.
We consider the following critical semilinear nonlocal equation involving the fractional Laplacian $$ (-Δ)^su=K(|x|)|u|^{2^*_s-2}u,\ \ \hbox{in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $K(|x|)$ is a positive radial function, $N>2+2s$, $0<s<1$, and $2^*_s=\frac{2N}{N-2s}$. Under some asymptotic assumptions on $K(x)$ at an extreme point, we show that this problem has infinitely many non-radial positive or sign-changing solutions.
We investigate inverse boundary problems associated with a time-dependent semilinear hyperbolic equation, where both nonlinearity and sources (including initial displacement and initial velocity) are unknown. We establish in several generic scenarios that one can uniquely determine the nonlinearity or the sources by using passive or active boundary observations. In order to exploit the nonlinearity and the sources simultaneously, we develop a new technique, which combines the observability for linear wave equations and a Runge approximation with higher order linearization for the semilinear hy…
We are concerned with the classification of positive radial solutions for the system $Δu=v^p$, $Δv=f(|\nabla u|)$, where $p>0$ and $f\in C^1[0,\infty)$ is a nondecreasing function such that $f(t)>0$ for all $t>0$. We show that in the case where the system is posed in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$ such solutions exist if and only if $\displaystyle\int_{1}^\infty \Big(\displaystyle \int_0^s F(t)dt \Big)^{-p/(2p+1)} ds =\infty$. This is the counterpart of the Keller-Osserman condition for the case of single semilinear equation. Similar optimal conditions are derived in case where the system is p…
We study the problem of propagation of analytic regularity for semi-linear symmetric hyperbolic systems. We adopt a global perspective and we prove that if the initial datum extends to a holomorphic function in a strip of radius (=width) ε_0, the same happens for the solution u(t,.) for a certain radius ε(t), as long as the solution exists. Our focus is on precise lower bounds on the spatial radius of analyticity ε(t) as t grows. We also get similar results for the Schroedinger equation with a real-analytic electromagnetic potential.
By using a characterization of the Morse index and the degeneracy in terms of a singular one dimensional eigenvalue problem given in a previous paper, we give a lower bound for the Morse index of radial solutions to Hénon type problems \[ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = |x|^αf(u) \qquad & \text{ in } Ω, u= 0 & \text{ on } \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. \] where $Ω$ is a bounded radially symmetric domain of $\mathbb R^N$ ($N\ge 2$), $α>0$ and $f$ is a real function. From this estimate we get that the Morse index of nodal radial solutions to this problem goes to $\infty$ as $α\to \infty$. Concer…
In this paper we give a unified proof to the soliton resolution conjecture along a sequence of times, for the semilinear focusing energy critical wave equations in the radial case and two dimensional equivariant wave map equations, including the four dimensional radial Yang Mills equation, without using outer energy type inequalities. Such inequalities have played a crucial role in previous works with similar results. Roughly speaking, we prove that along a sequence of times approaching the maximal time of existence, the solution decouples to a sum of rescaled solitons and a term vanishing in …
We study the regularity of stable solutions to the problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{rcll} (-Δ)^s u &=& f(u) & \text{in} \quad B_1\,, u &\equiv&0 & \text{in} \quad \mathbb R^n\setminus B_1\,, \end{array} \right. $$ where $s\in(0,1)$. Our main result establishes an $L^\infty$ bound for stable and radially decreasing $H^s$ solutions to this problem in dimensions $2 \leq n < 2(s+2+\sqrt{2(s+1)})$. In particular, this estimate holds for all $s\in(0,1)$ in dimensions $2 \leq n\leq 6$. It applies to all nonlinearities $f\in C^2$. For such parameters $s$ and $n$, our result leads to the regularity of …
We study the uniqueness of singular radial (forward and backward) self-similar positive solutions of the equation $u_t-Δu = u^p, \quad x\in{\mathbb R}^n,\ t>0,$ where $p\geq(n+2)/(n-2)_+$.
We study radial solutions of the semilinear elliptic equation $Δu+f(u)=0$ under rather general growth conditions on $f$. We construct a radial singular solution and study the intersection number between the singular solution and a regular solution. An application to bifurcation problems of elliptic Dirichlet problems is given. To this end, we derive a certain limit equation from the original equation at infinity, using a generalized similarity transformation. Through a generalized Cole-Hopf transformation, all the limit equations can be reduced into two typical cases, i.e., $Δu+u^p=0$ and $Δu+…
In this paper we give conditions on $f$ so that problem $$ Δu +f(u)=0,\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^N, N\ge 2, $$ has at least two radial bound state solutions with any prescribed number of zeros, and such that $u(0)$ belongs to a specific subinterval of $(0,\infty)$. This property will allow us to give conditions on $f$ so that this problem has at least any given number of radial solutions having a prescribed number of zeros.
We investigate nodal radial solutions to semilinear problems of type \[\begin{cases}-Δu = f(|x|,u) \qquad & \text{ in } Ω, \newline u= 0 & \text{ on } \partial Ω, \end{cases} \] where $Ω$ is a bounded radially symmetric domain of $\mathbb R^N$ ($N\ge 2$) and $f$ is a real function. We characterize both the Morse index and the degeneracy in terms of a singular one dimensional eigenvalue problem, which is studied in full detail. The presented approach also describes the symmetries of the eigenfunctions. This characterization enables to give a lower bound for the Morse index in a forthcoming work…
We give blow-up results for the Klein-Gordon equation and other perturbations of the semilinear wave equations with superlinear power nonlinearity, in one space dimension or in higher dimension under radial symmetry outside the origin.
