Given positive integers $a\leq b \leq c$, let $K_{a,b,c}$ be the complete 3-partite 3-uniform hypergraph with three parts of sizes $a,b,c$. Let $H$ be a 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices where $n$ is divisible by $a+b+c$. We asymptotically determine the minimum vertex degree of $H$ that guarantees a perfect $K_{a, b, c}$-tiling, that is, a spanning subgraph of $H$ consisting of vertex-disjoint copies of $K_{a, b, c}$. This partially answers a question of Mycroft, who proved an analogous result with respect to codegree for $r$-uniform hypergraphs for all $r\ge 3$. Our proof uses a lattice-based absorbing method, the concept of fractional tiling, and a recent result on shadows for 3-graphs.
Given two $k$-graphs ($k$-uniform hypergraphs) $F$ and $H$, a perfect $F$-tiling (or an $F$-factor) in $H$ is a set of vertex disjoint copies of $F$ that together cover the vertex set of $H$. For all complete $k$-partite $k$-graphs $K$, Mycroft proved a minimum codegree condition that guarantees a $K$-factor in an $n$-vertex $k$-graph, which is tight up to an error term $o(n)$. In this paper we improve the error term in Mycroft's result to a sub-linear term that relates to the Turán number of $K$ when the differences of the sizes of the vertex classes of $K$ are co-prime. Furthermore, we find …
The vertex $k$-partiteness $v_k(G)$ of graph $G$ is defined as the fewest number of vertices whose deletion from $G$ yields a $k$-partite graph. In this paper, we introduce two concepts: monotonic decreasing topological index and monotonic increasing topological index, and characterize the extremal graphs having the minimum Wiener index, the maximum Harry index, the maximum reciprocal degree distance, the minimum eccentricity distance sum, the minimum adjacent eccentric distance sum index, the maximum connective eccentricity index, the maximum Zagreb indices among graphs with a fixed number $n…
Recently, we have introduced and modified graph-decomposition theorems based on a graph product motivated by applications in the context of synchronising periodic real-time processes. This vertex-removing synchronised product (VRSP) is based on modifications of the well-known Cartesian product and is closely related to the synchronised product due to Wöhrle and Thomas. Here, we introduce a new graph-decomposition theorem based on the VRSP that decomposes an edge-labelled acyclic n-partite multigraph where all labels are the same.
For two graphs $G$ and $H$, the Turán number $ex(G,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in a subgraph of $G$ that contains no copy of $H$. Chen, Li, and Tu determined the Turán numbers $ex(K_{m,n},kK_2)$ for all $k\geq 1$ [7]. In this paper we will determine the Turán numbers $ex(K_{a_1,\ldots,a_r},kK_r)$ for all $r\geq 3$ and $k\geq 1$.
Let $H$ be a $3$-partite $3$-uniform hypergraph, i.e. a $3$-uniform hypergraph such that every edge intersects every partition class in exactly one vertex, with each partition class of size $n$. We determine a Dirac-type vertex degree threshold for perfect matchings in $3$-partite $3$-uniform hypergraphs.
Given two $k$-graphs $F$ and $H$, a perfect $F$-tiling (also called an $F$-factor) in $H$ is a set of vertex disjoint copies of $F$ that together cover the vertex set of $H$. Let $t_{k-1}(n, F)$ be the smallest integer $t$ such that every $k$-graph $H$ on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $t$ contains a perfect $F$-tiling. Mycroft (JCTA, 2016) determined the asymptotic values of $t_{k-1}(n, F)$ for $k$-partite $k$-graphs $F$. Mycroft also conjectured that the error terms $o(n)$ in $t_{k-1}(n, F)$ can be replaced by a constant that depends only on $F$. In this paper, we improve the er…
We prove that the vertex degree threshold for tiling $\C_4^3$ (the 3-uniform hypergraph with four vertices and two triples) in a 3-uniform hypergraph on $n\in 4\mathbb N$ vertices is $\binom{n-1}2 - \binom{\frac34 n}2+\frac38n+c$, where $c=1$ if $n\in 8\mathbb N$ and $c=-\frac12$ otherwise. This result is best possible, and is one of the first results on vertex degree conditions for hypergraph tiling.
Let $k\ge 2$ and $n_1\ge n_2\ge n_3\ge n_4$ be integers such that $n_4$ is sufficiently larger than $k$. We determine the maximum number of edges of a 4-partite graph with parts of sizes $n_1,\dots, n_4$ that does not contain $k$ vertex-disjoint triangles. For any $r> t\ge 3$, we give a conjecture on the maximum number of edges of an $r$-partite graph that does not contain $k$ vertex-disjoint cliques $K_t$.

Given $k\ge 2$ and two $k$-graphs ($k$-uniform hypergraphs) $F$ and $H$, an \emph{$F$-factor} in $H$ is a set of vertex disjoint copies of $F$ that together covers the vertex set of $H$. Lenz and Mubayi studied the $F$-factor problems in quasi-random $k$-graphs with minimum degree $Ω(n^{k-1})$. In particular, they constructed a sequence of $1/8$-dense quasi-random $3$-graphs $H(n)$ with minimum degree $Ω(n^2)$ and minimum codegree $Ω(n)$ but with no $K_{2,2,2}$-factor. We prove that if $p>1/8$ and $F$ is a $3$-partite $3$-graph with $f$ vertices, then for sufficiently large $n$, all $p$-dense …
A well-known special case of a conjecture attributed to Ryser states that k-partite intersecting hypergraphs have transversals of at most k-1 vertices. An equivalent form was formulated by Gyárfás: if the edges of a complete graph K are colored with k colors then the vertex set of K can be covered by at most k-1 sets, each connected in some color. It turned out that the analogue of the conjecture for hypergraphs can be answered: Z. Király proved that in every k-coloring of the edges of the r-uniform complete hypergraph K^r (r >= 3), the vertex set of K^r can be covered by at most $\lceil k/r \…
Over recent years there has been much interest in both Turán and Ramsey properties of vertex ordered graphs. In this paper we initiate the study of embedding spanning structures into vertex ordered graphs. In particular, we introduce a general framework for approaching the problem of determining the minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect $H$-tiling in an ordered graph. In the (unordered) graph setting, this problem was resolved by Kühn and Osthus [The minimum degree threshold for perfect graph packings, Combinatorica, 2009]. We use our general framework to resolve the perfect $H$-tilin…
An \emph{equitable $(q, r)$-tree-coloring} of a graph $G$ is a $q$-coloring of $G$ such that the subgraph induced by each color class is a forest of maximum degree at most $r$ and the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most $1.$ Let the \emph{strong equitable vertex $r$-arboricity} of a graph $G,$ denoted by $va^\equiv_r (G)$, be the minimum $p$ such that $G$ has an equitable $(q, r)$-tree-coloring for every $q\geq p.$ The values of $va^\equiv_1 (K_{n,n})$ were investigated by Tao and Lin and Wu, Zhang, and Li where exact values of $va^\equiv_1 (K_{n,n})$ were found in some special ca…
In this paper, we prove an analogue of Corrádi and Hajnal's classical theorem. There exists $n_0$ such that for every $n \in 3\mathbb{Z}$ when $n \ge n_0$ the following holds. If $G$ is an oriented graph on $n$ vertices and every vertex has both indegree and outdegree at least $7n/18$, then $G$ contains a perfect transitive triangle tiling, which is a collection of vertex-disjoint transitive triangles covering every vertex of $G$. This result is best possible, as, for every $n \in 3\mathbb{Z}$, there exists an oriented graph $G$ on $n$ vertices without a perfect transitive triangle tiling in w…
We find explicit optimal vertex, edge and face coulourings for the chair tiling, the Ammann--Beenker tiling, the rational pinwheel tiling and the pinwheel tiling.
We compute the number of rhombus tilings of a hexagon with sides n, n, N, n, n, N, where two triangles on the symmetry axis touching in one vertex are removed. The case of the common vertex being the center of the hexagon solves a problem posed by Propp.
Let $G$ be a graph and $t$ a nonnegative integer. Suppose $f$ is a mapping from the vertex set of $G$ to $\{1,2,\dots, k\}$. If, for any vertex $u$ of $G$, the number of neighbors $v$ of $u$ with $f(v)=f(u)$ is less than or equal to $t$, then $f$ is called a $t$-relaxed $k$-coloring of $G$. And $G$ is said to be $(k,t)$-colorable. The $t$-relaxed chromatic number of $G$, denote by $χ_t(G)$, is defined as the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ is $(k,t)$-colorable. A set $S$ of vertices in $G$ is $t$-sparse if $S$ induces a graph with a maximum degree of at most $t$. Thus $G$ is $(k,t)$-colorabl…
In this paper we prove an asymptotic multipartite version of a well-known theorem of Kühn and Osthus by establishing, for any graph $H$ with chromatic number $r$, the asymptotic multipartite minimum degree threshold which ensures that a large $r$-partite graph $G$ admits a perfect $H$-tiling. We also give the threshold for an $H$-tiling covering all but a linear number of vertices of $G$, in a multipartite analogue of results of Komlós and of Shokoufandeh and Zhao.
Let $G$ and $H$ be $k$-graphs ($k$-uniform hypergraphs); then a perfect $H$-packing in $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ in $G$ which together cover every vertex of $G$. For any fixed $H$ let $δ(H, n)$ be the minimum $δ$ such that any $k$-graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree $δ(G) \geq δ$ contains a perfect $H$-packing. The problem of determining $δ(H, n)$ has been widely studied for graphs (i.e. $2$-graphs), but little is known for $k \geq 3$. Here we determine the asymptotic value of $δ(H, n)$ for all complete $k$-partite $k$-graphs $H$, as well as a wide class …
Kalai conjectured that every $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with more than $\frac{t-1}{r} {n \choose r-1}$ edges contains all tight $r$-trees of some fixed size $t$. We prove Kalai's conjecture for $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraphs. Our result is asymptotically best possible up to replacing the term $\frac{t-1}{r}$ with the term $\frac{t-r+1}{r}$. We apply our main result in graphs to show an upper bound for the Turán number of trees.
For a fixed bipartite graph H and given number c, 0<c<1, we determine the threshold T_H(c) which guarantees that any n-vertex graph with at edge density at least T_H(c) contains $(1-o(1))c/v(H) n$ vertex-disjoint copies of H. In the proof we use a variant of a technique developed by Komlos~\bcolor{[Combinatorica 20 (2000), 203-218}]
We introduce a counterpart to the notion of vertex disjoint tilings by copy of a fixed graph F to the setting of graphons. The case F=K_2 gives the notion of matchings in graphons. We give a transference statement that allows us to switch between the finite and limit notion, and derive several favorable properties, including the LP-duality counterpart to the classical relation between the fractional vertex covers and fractional matchings/tilings, and discuss connections with property testing. As an application of our theory, we determine the asymptotically almost sure F-tiling number of inhomo…
Bipartite graph tiling was studied by Zhao who gave the best possible minimum degree conditions for a balanced bipartite graph on 2ms vertices to contain m vertex disjoint copies of K_{s,s}. Let s<t be fixed positive integers. Hladký and Schacht gave minimum degree conditions for a balanced bipartite graph on 2m(s+t) vertices to contain m vertex disjoint copies of K_{s,t}. Their results were best possible, except in the case when m is odd and t> 2s+1. We give the best possible minimum degree condition in this case.
A semi-regular tiling of the hyperbolic plane is a tessellation by regular geodesic polygons with the property that each vertex has the same vertex-type, which is a cyclic tuple of integers that determine the number of sides of the polygons surrounding the vertex. We determine combinatorial criteria for the existence, and uniqueness, of a semi-regular tiling with a given vertex-type, and pose some open questions.
Let $\vec{T}_k$ be the transitive tournament on $k$ vertices. We show that every oriented graph on $n=4m$ vertices with minimum total degree $(11/12+o(1))n$ can be partitioned into vertex disjoint $\vec{T}_4$'s, and this bound is asymptotically tight. We also improve the best known bound on the minimum total degree for partitioning oriented graphs into vertex disjoint $\vec{T}_k$'s.
We consider the following problem posed by Volkmann in 2007: How close to regular must a c-partite tournament be, to secure a strongly connected subtournament of order $c$? We give sufficient conditions on the regularity of balanced $c$-partite tournaments to assure the existence of strong maximal subtournament with minimum degree at least $\left\lfloor \frac{c-2}{4}\right\rfloor+1$. We obtain this result as an application of counting the number of subtournaments of order $c$ for which a vertex has minimum out-degree (resp. in-degree) at most $q\geq 0$.
For positive integers $s,t,u,v$, we define a bipartite graph $Γ_{\mathbb{R}}(X^s Y^t,X^u Y^v)$ where each partite set is a copy of $\mathbb{R}^3$, and a vertex $(a_1,a_2,a_3)$ in the first partite set is adjacent to a vertex $[x_1,x_2,x_3]$ in the second partite set if and only if \[ a_2 + x_2 = a_1^s x_1^t \quad \text{and} \quad a_3+x_3=a_1^ux_1^v. \] In this paper, we classify all such graphs according to girth.
A tiling (edge-to-edge) of the plane is a family of tiles that cover the plane without gaps or overlaps. Vertex figure of a vertex in a tiling to be the union of all edges incident to that vertex. A tiling is $k$-vertex-homogeneous if any two vertices with congruent vertex figures are symmetric with each other and the vertices form precisely $k$ transitivity classes with respect to the group of all symmetries of the tiling. In this article, we discuss that if a map is the quotient of a plane's $k$-vertex-homogeneous lattice ($k \ge 4$) then what would be the sharp bounds of the number of verte…
The Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem states that for any integer $r \ge 1$ and any multiple $n$ of $r$, if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices and $δ(G) \ge (1 - 1/r)n$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $n/r$ vertex-disjoint copies of the complete graph on $r$ vertices. We prove a very general analogue of this result for directed graphs: for any integer $r \ge 4$ and any sufficiently large multiple $n$ of $r$, if $G$ is a directed graph on $n$ vertices and every vertex is incident to at least $2(1 - 1/r)n - 1$ directed edges, then $G$ can be partitioned into $n/r$ vertex-disjoint subgraphs of size $r$ eac…
For a fixed integer h>=1, let G be a tripartite graph with N vertices in each vertex class, N divisible by 6h, such that every vertex is adjacent to at least 2N/3+h-1 vertices in each of the other classes. We show that if N is sufficiently large, then G can be tiled perfectly by copies of K_{h,h,h}. This extends the work in [19] and also gives a sufficient condition for tiling by any (fixed) 3-colorable graph. Furthermore, we show that this minimum-degree condition is best possible and provide very tight bounds when N is divisible by h but not by 6h.
By using the Szemerédi Regularity Lemma, Alon and Sudakov recently extended the classical Andrásfai-Erdõs-Sós theorem to cover general graphs. We prove, without using the Regularity Lemma, that the following stronger statement is true. Given any (r-1)-partite graph H whose smallest part has t vertices, and any fixed c>0, there exists a constant C such that whenever G is an n-vertex graph with minimum degree at least ((3r-4)/(3r-1)+c)n, either G contains H, or we can delete at most Cn^(2-1/t) edges from G to yield an r-partite graph.
Let G be a simple undirected graph. We find the number of maximal independent sets in complete t-partite graphs. We will show that vertex decomposability and shellability are equivalent in this graphs. Also, we obtain an equivalent condition for Cohen-Macaulay in complete t-partite graphs.
An {\em ordered $r$-graph} is an $r$-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered. Given $2\leq k\leq r$, an ordered $r$-graph $H$ is {\em interval} $k$-{\em partite} if there exist at least $k$ disjoint intervals in the ordering such that every edge of $H$ has nonempty intersection with each of the intervals and is contained in their union. Our main result implies that for each $α> k - 1$ and $d>0$, every $n$-vertex ordered $r$-graph with $d \,n^α$ edges has for some $m\leq n$ an $m$-vertex interval $k$-partite subgraph with $Ω(d\, m^α)$ edges. This is an extension to ordered $r$-g…
Komlos [Tiling Turan theorems, Combinatorica, 20,2 (2000), 203{218] determined the asymptotically optimal minimum degree condition for covering a given proportion of vertices of a host graph by vertex-disjoint copies of a fixed graph. We show that the minimum degree condition can be relaxed in the sense that we require only a given fraction of vertices to have the prescribed degree.
We study the minimum degree necessary to guarantee the existence of perfect and almost-perfect triangle-tilings in an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with sublinear independence number. In this setting, we show that if $δ(G) \ge n/3 + o(n)$ then $G$ has a triangle-tiling covering all but at most four vertices. Also, for every $r \ge 5$, we asymptotically determine the minimum degree threshold for a perfect triangle-tiling under the additional assumptions that $G$ is $K_r$-free and $n$ is divisible by $3$.
For two $s$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ and $F$, the Turán number $ex_s(H,F)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free subgraph of $H$. Let $s, r, k, n_1, \ldots, n_r$ be integers satisfying $2\leq s\leq r$ and $n_1\leq n_2\leq \cdots\leq n_r$. De Silva, Heysse and Young determined $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r}, kK_2)$ and De Silva, Heysse, Kapilow, Schenfisch and Young determined $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r},kK_r)$. In this paper, as a generalization of these results, we consider three Turán-type problems for $k$ disjoint cliques in $r$-partite $s$-uniform hypergraphs. First, we consider a multi-…
We show that the number of configurations of the 20 Vertex model on certain domains with domain wall type boundary conditions is equal to the number of domino tilings of Aztec-like triangles, proving a conjecture from [P. Di Francesco and E. Guitter, Twenty-Vertex Model with Domain Wall Boundaries and Domino Tilings, Elec. Jour. of Combinatorics 27 (2020), no. 2, P2.13]. The result is based on the integrability of the 20 Vertex model and uses a connection to the U-turn boundary 6 Vertex model to re-express the number of 20 Vertex configurations as a simple determinant, which is then related to…
Ryser's Conjecture states that for any $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph the vertex cover number is at most $r-1$ times the matching number. This conjecture is only known to be true for $r\leq 3$. For intersecting hypergraphs, Ryser's Conjecture reduces to saying that the edges of every $r$-partite intersecting hypergraph can be covered by $r-1$ vertices. This special case of the conjecture has only been proven for $r \leq 5$. It is interesting to study hypergraphs which are extremal in Ryser's Conjecture i.e, those hypergraphs for which the vertex cover number is exactly $r-1$ times the matc…
There is a sufficiently large $N\in h\mathbb{N}$ such that the following holds. If $G$ is a tripartite graph with $N$ vertices in each vertex class such that every vertex is adjacent to at least $2N/3+2h-1$ vertices in each of the other classes, then $G$ can be tiled perfectly by copies of $K_{h,h,h}$. This extends work by two of the authors [Electron. J. Combin, 16(1), 2009] and also gives a sufficient condition for tiling by any fixed 3-colorable graph. Furthermore, we show that $2N/3+2h-1$ in our result can not be replaced by $2N/3+ h-2$ and that if $N$ is divisible by $6h$, then we can rep…
Web crawlers are used by internet search engines to gather information about the web graph. In this paper we investigate a simple process which models such software by walking around the vertices of a graph. Once initial random vertex weights have been assigned, the robot crawler traverses the graph deterministically following a greedy algorithm, always visiting the neighbour of least weight and then updating this weight to be the highest overall. We consider the maximum, minimum and average number of steps taken by the crawler to visit every vertex of firstly, complete k-partite graphs and se…
A combinatorial tiling of the sphere is naturally given by an embedded graph. We study the case that each tile has exactly five edges, with the ultimate goal of classifying combinatorial tilings of the sphere by geometrically congruent pentagons. We show that the tiling cannot have only one vertex of degree >3. Moreover, we construct earth map tilings, which give classifications under the condition that vertices of degree >3 are at least of distance 4 apart, or under the condition that there are exactly two vertices of degree >3.
Let $Y_{3,2}$ be the $3$-uniform hypergraph with two edges intersecting in two vertices. Our main result is that any $n$-vertex 3-uniform hypergraph with at least $\binom{n}{3} - \binom{n-m+1}{3} + o(n^3)$ edges contains a collection of $m$ vertex-disjoint copies of $Y_{3,2}$, for $m\le n/7$. The bound on the number of edges is asymptotically best possible. This problem generalizes the Matching Conjecture of Erdős. We then use this result combined with the absorbing method to determine the asymptotically best possible minimum $(k-3)$-degree threshold for $\ell$-Hamiltonicity in $k$-graphs, whe…
We look at several saturation problems in complete balanced blow-ups of graphs. We let $H[n]$ denote the blow-up of $H$ onto parts of size $n$ and refer to a copy of $H$ in $H[n]$ as 'partite' if it has one vertex in each part of $H[n]$. We then ask how few edges a subgraph $G$ of $H[n]$ can have such that $G$ has no partite copy of $H$ but such that the addition of any new edge from $H[n]$ creates a partite $H$. When $H$ is a triangle this value was determined by Ferrara, Jacobson, Pfender, and Wenger. Our main result is to calculate this value for $H=K_4$ when $n$ is large. We also give exac…
A perfect $K_r$-tiling in a graph $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $K_r$ that together cover all the vertices in $G$. In this paper we consider perfect $K_r$-tilings in the setting of randomly perturbed graphs; a model introduced by Bohman, Frieze and Martin where one starts with a dense graph and then adds $m$ random edges to it. Specifically, given any fixed $0< α<1-1/r$ we determine how many random edges one must add to an $n$-vertex graph $G$ of minimum degree $δ(G) \geq αn$ to ensure that, asymptotically almost surely, the resulting graph contains a perfect $K_r$-tiling. A…
Let $TT_k$ denote the transitive tournament on $k$ vertices. Let $TT(h,k)$ denote the graph obtained from $TT_k$ by replacing each vertex with an independent set of size $h \geq 1$. The following result is proved: Let $c_2=1/2$, $c_3=5/6$ and $c_k=1-2^{-k-\log k}$ for $k \geq 4$. For every $ε> 0$ there exists $N=N(ε,h,k)$ such that for every undirected graph $G$ with $n > N$ vertices and with $δ(G) \geq c_kn$, every orientation of $G$ contains vertex disjoint copies of $TT(h,k)$ that cover all but at most $εn$ vertices. In the cases $k=2$ and $k=3$ the result is asymptotically tight. For $k \g…
At the free-fermion point, the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) can be related to the Aztec diamond, a domino tiling problem. We study the mapping on the level of complete statistics for general domains and boundary conditions. This is obtained by associating to both models a set of non-intersecting lines in the Lindstroem-Gessel-Viennot (LGV) scheme. One of the consequence for DWBC is that the boundaries of the ordered phases are described by the Airy process in the thermodynamic limit.
A perfect $H$-tiling in a graph $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of a graph $H$ in $G$ that together cover all the vertices in $G$. In this paper we investigate perfect $H$-tilings in a random graph model introduced by Bohman, Frieze and Martin in which one starts with a dense graph and then adds $m$ random edges to it. Specifically, for any fixed graph $H$, we determine the number of random edges required to add to an arbitrary graph of linear minimum degree in order to ensure the resulting graph contains a perfect $H$-tiling with high probability. Our proof utilises Szemerédi's …
We consider the triangular lattice ice model (20-Vertex model) with four types of domain-wall type boundary conditions. In types 1 and 2, the configurations are shown to be equinumerous to the quarter-turn symmetric domino tilings of an Aztec-like holey square, with a central cross-shaped hole. The proof of this statement makes extensive use of integrability and of a connection to the 6-Vertex model. The type 3 configurations are conjectured to be in same number as domino tilings of a particular triangle. The four enumeration problems are reformulated in terms of four types of Alternating Phas…
