A tiling (edge-to-edge) of the plane is a family of tiles that cover the plane without gaps or overlaps. Vertex figure of a vertex in a tiling to be the union of all edges incident to that vertex. A tiling is $k$-vertex-homogeneous if any two vertices with congruent vertex figures are symmetric with each other and the vertices form precisely $k$ transitivity classes with respect to the group of all symmetries of the tiling. In this article, we discuss that if a map is the quotient of a plane's $k$-vertex-homogeneous lattice ($k \ge 4$) then what would be the sharp bounds of the number of vertex orbits.
We develop a method to find a set of diminimal polyhedral maps on the torus from which all other polyhedral maps on the torus may be generated by face splitting and vertex splitting. We employ this method, though not to its completion, to find 53 diminimal polyhedral maps on the Torus.
A vertex-transitive map $X$ is a map on a closed surface on which the automorphism group ${\rm Aut}(X)$ acts transitively on the set of vertices. If the face-cycles at all the vertices in a map are of same type then the map is said to be a semi-equivelar map. Clearly, a vertex-transitive map is semi-equivelar. Converse of this is not true in general. We show that there are eleven types of semi-equivelar maps on the torus. Three of these are equivelar maps. It is known that two of the three types of equivelar maps on the torus are always vertex-transitive. We show that this is true for the rema…
The well-known twenty types of 2-uniform tilings of the plane give rise infinitely many doubly semi-equivelar maps on the torus. In this article, we show that every such doubly semi-equivelar map on the torus contains a Hamiltonian cycle. As a consequence, we establish the Nash-Williams conjecture for the graphs associated with these doubly semi-equivelar maps by showing that these graphs are either 3-connected or 4-connected.
There is no 5,7-triangulation of the torus, that is, no triangulation with exactly two exceptional vertices, of degree 5 and 7. Similarly, there is no 3,5-quadrangulation. The vertices of a 2,4-hexangulation of the torus cannot be bicolored. Similar statements hold for 4,8-triangulations and 2,6-quadrangulations. We prove these results, of which the first two are known and the others seem to be new, as corollaries of a theorem on the holonomy group of a euclidean cone metric on the torus with just two cone points. We provide two proofs of this theorem: One argument is metric in nature, the oth…
Semi-Equivelar maps are generalizations of Archimedean solids to the surfaces other than 2-sphere. There are eight semi-equivelar maps of types $\{3^{3},4^{2}\}$, $\{3^{2},4,3,4\}$, $\{6,3,6,3\}$, $\{3^{4},6\}$, $\{4,8^{2}\}$, $\{3,12^{2}\}$, $\{4,6,12\}$, $\{6,4,3,4\}$ exist on the torus. In this article we show the existence of Hamiltonian cycle in each semi-equivelar map on the torus except the map of type $\{3,12^{2}\}$. This result gives the partial solution to the conjecture which is given by Gr$\ddot{u}$nbaum \cite{grunbaum} and Nash-Williams \cite{nash williams} that every 4-connected …
A proper vertex-colouring of a simple graph $G$ is said to be odd if, for every non-isolated vertex $v$ of $G$, some colour appears an odd number of times in the neighbourhood of $v$. We show that if $G$ embeds in the torus, then it admits a proper odd vertex-colouring with at most $9$ colours.
If the face-cycles at all the vertices in a map on a surface are of same type then the map is called semi-equivelar. There are eleven types of Archimedean tilings on the plane. All the Archimedean tilings are semi-equivelar maps. If a map $X$ on the torus is a quotient of an Archimedean tiling on the plane then the map $X$ is semi-equivelar. We show that each semi-equivelar map on the torus is a quotient of an Archimedean tiling on the plane. Vertex-transitive maps are semi-equivelar maps. We know that four types of semi-equivelar maps on the torus are always vertex-transitive and there are ex…
Semi-Equivelar maps are generalizations of maps on the surfaces of Archimedean solids to surfaces other than the $2$-sphere. The well known 11 types of normal tilings of the plane suggest the possible types of semi-equivelar maps on the torus and the Klein bottle. In this article we classify (up to isomorphism) semi-equivelar maps on the torus and the Klein bottle with few vertices.
The second part of the paper is devoted to enumeration of $r$-regular toroidal maps up to all homeomorphisms of the torus (unsensed maps). We describe in detail the periodic orientation reversing homeomorphisms of the torus which turn out to be representable as glide reflections. We show that considering quotients of the torus with respect to these homeomorphisms leads to maps on the Klein bottle, annulus and the Möbius band. Using $3$- and $4$-regular maps as an example we describe the technique of enumerating quotient maps on surfaces with a boundary. Obtained recurrence relations are used t…
A map $X$ on a surface is called vertex-transitive if the automorphism group of $X$ acts transitively on the set of vertices of $X$. If the face-cycles at all the vertices in a map are of same type then the map is called semi-equivelar. In general, semi-equivelar maps on a surface form a bigger class than vertex-transitive maps. There are semi-equivelar toroidal maps which are not vertex-transitive. In this article, we show that semi-equivelar toroidal maps are quotients of vertex-transitive toroidal maps. More explicitly, we prove that each semi-equivelar toroidal map has a finite vertex-tran…
Quasi-vertex-transitive maps are the homogeneous maps on the plane with finitely many vertex orbits under the action of their automorphism groups. We show that there exist quasi-vertex-transitive maps of types $[p^3, 3]$ for $p \equiv 1$ (mod $6$), but there doesn't exist vertex-transitive map of such types. In particular, we determine the surface with the lowest possible genus that admit a polyhedral map of type $[5^3, 3]$.
The work that consists of two parts is devoted to the problem of enumerating unrooted $r$-regular maps on the torus up to all its symmetries. We begin with enumerating near-$r$-regular rooted maps on the torus, projective plane and the Klein bottle. We also present the results of enumerating some special kinds of maps on the sphere: near-$r$-regular maps, maps with multiple leaves and maps with multiple root semi-edges. For $r=3$ and $r=4$ we obtain exact analytical formulas. For larger $r$ we derive recurrence relations. Then using these results we enumerate $r$-regular maps on the torus up t…
The $k$-semi equivelar maps, for $k \geq 2$, are generalizations of maps on the surfaces of Johnson solids to closed surfaces other than the 2-sphere. In the present study, we determine 2-semi equivelar maps of curvature 0 exhaustively on the torus and the Klein bottle. Furthermore, we classify (up to isomorphism) all these 2-semi equivelar maps on the surfaces with up to 12 vertices.
A vertex $v$ in a map $M$ has the face-sequence $(p_1 ^{n_1}. \ldots. p_k^{n_k})$, if there are $n_i$ numbers of $p_i$-gons incident at $v$ in the given cyclic order, for $1 \leq i \leq k$. A map $M$ is called a semi-equivelar map if each of its vertex has same face-sequence. Doubly semi-equivelar maps are a generalization of semi-equivelar maps which have precisely 2 distinct face-sequences. In this article, we enumerate the types of doubly semi-equivelar maps on the plane and torus which have combinatorial curvature 0. Further, we present classification of doubly semi-equivelar maps on the t…
We present enumerations of a class of toroidal graphs which give rise to semi-equivelar maps. There are eleven different types of semi-equivelar maps on the torus. These are of the types $\{3^{6}\}$, $\{4^{4}\}$, $\{6^{3}\}$, $\{3^{3}, 4^{2}\}$, $\{3^{2}, 4, 3, 4\}$, $\{3, 6, 3, 6\}$, $\{3^{4}, 6\}$, $\{4, 8^{2}\}$, $\{3, 12^{2}\}$, $\{4, 6, 12\}$, $\{3, 4, 6, 4\}$. We know the classification of the maps of types $\{3^{6}\}$, $\{4^{4}\}$, $\{6^{3}\}$ on the torus. In this article, we attempt to classify maps of types $\{3^{3}, 4^{2}\}$, $\{3^{2}, 4, 3, 4\}$, $\{3, 6, 3, 6\}$, $\{3^{4}, 6\}$, $…
If a map has k transitivity classes of vertices that are subject to the action of the automorphism group, it is said to be k-uniform. The classification of 1-uniform maps on the torus is known. In this article, we classify 2-uniform maps on the torus up to isomorphism. Explicit formulas for the number of combinatorial types of these maps on number of vertices is obtained in terms of arithmetic functions in number theory, such as the divisor function. The asymptotic behaviour of these functions as number of vertices tends to infinity is also discussed and we obtained continuous functions which …
The number of distinct maps (pre-maps) with a single vertex and valence $d$ is computed for any value of $d$. The types of maps (pre-maps) that we consider depend on whether the underlaying graph (pre-graph) is signed or unsigned and directed or undirected.
Among all equivelar vertex-transitive maps on a given closed surface S, the automorphism groups of maps with Schläfli types {3, 7} and {7, 3} allow the highest possible order. We describe a procedure to transform all such maps into 1- or 2-orbit maps, whose symmetry type has been previously studied. In so doing we provide a procedure to determine all vertex-transitive maps with Schläfli type {3, 7} which are neither regular or chiral. We determine all such maps on surfaces with Euler characteristic -1 \geq \c{hi} \geq -40.
Let $H$ be an induced subgraph of the torus $C_k^m$. We show that when $k \ge 3$ is even and $|V(H)|$ divides some power of $k$, then for sufficiently large $n$ the torus $C_k^n$ has a perfect vertex-packing with induced copies of $H$. On the other hand, disproving a conjecture of Gruslys, we show that when $k$ is odd and not a prime power, then there exists $H$ such that $|V(H)|$ divides some power of $k$, but there is no $n$ such that $C_k^n$ has a perfect vertex-packing with copies of $H$. We also disprove a conjecture of Gruslys, Leader and Tan by exhibiting a subgraph $H$ of the $k$-dimen…
Semi-Equivelar maps are generalizations of Archimedean solids to the surfaces other than 2-sphere. In earlier work a complete classification of semi-equivelar map of type $(3^5, 4)$ on the surface of Euler characteristic -1 was given. In the meantime Karabas an Nedela classified vertex transitive semi-equivelar maps on the double torus. In this article we study the types of semi-equivelar maps on double torus that are also available on the surface of Euler characteristic -1. We classify them and show that none of them are vertex transitive.
This paper provides an alternate proof to parts of the Goulden-Slofstra formula for enumerating two vertex maps by genus, which is an extension of the famous Harer-Zagier formula that computes the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of curves. This paper also shows a further simplification to the Goulden-Slofstra formula. Portions of this alternate proof will be used in a subsequent paper, where it forms a basis for a more general result that applies for a certain class of maps with an arbitrary number of vertices.
If the face\mbox{-}cycles at all the vertices in a map are of same type then the map is called semi\mbox{-}equivelar. A map is called minimal if the number of vertices is minimal. We know the bounds of number of vertex orbits of semi-equivelar toroidal maps. These bounds are sharp. Datta \cite{BD2020} has proved that every semi-equivelar toroidal map has a vertex-transitive cover. In this article, we prove that if a semi-equivelar map is $k$ orbital then it has a finite index $m$-orbital minimal cover for $m \le k$. We also show the existence and classification of $n$-sheeted covers of semi-eq…
We prove a general multi-dimensional central limit theorem for the expected number of vertices of a given degree in the family of planar maps whose vertex degrees are restricted to an arbitrary (finite or infinite) set of positive integers $D$. Our results rely on a classical bijection with mobiles (objects exhibiting a tree structure), combined with refined analytic tools to deal with the systems of equations on infinite variables that arise. We also discuss possible extensions to maps of higher genus and to weighted maps.
We describe procedures for generating all 2-cell embedded simple graphs with up to a fixed number of vertices on a given surface. We also modify these procedures to generate closed 2-cell embeddings and polyhedral embeddings. We give results of computer implementations of these procedures for seven surfaces: the sphere, the torus, the double torus, the projective plane, the Klein bottle, the triple cross surface, and the quadruple cross surface.
A triangulation of a surface with fixed topological type is called irreducible if no edge can be contracted to a vertex while remaining in the category of simplicial complexes and preserving the topology of the surface. A complete list of combinatorial structures of irreducible triangulations is made by hand for the once-punctured torus, consisting of exactly 297 non-isomorphic triangulations.

Our results rely on a classical bijection with mobiles (objects exhibiting a tree structure), combined with refined analytic tools to deal with the systems of equations on infinite variables that arise. We prove that every triangulation of either of the torus, projective plane and Klein bottle, contains a vertex-spanning planar Laman graph as a subcomplex. Invoking a result of Kir{á}ly, we conclude that every $1$-skeleton of a triangulation of a surface of nonnegative Euler characteristic has a rigid realization in the plane using at most 26 locations for the vertices.
A Schnyder wood is an orientation and coloring of the edges of a planar map satisfying a simple local property. We propose a generalization of Schnyder woods to graphs embedded on the torus with application to graph drawing. We prove several properties on this new object. Among all we prove that a graph embedded on the torus admits such a Schnyder wood if and only if it is an essentially 3-connected toroidal map. We show that these Schnyder woods can be used to embed the universal cover of an essentially 3-connected toroidal map on an infinite and periodic orthogonal surface. Finally we use th…
We address the six vertex model on a random lattice, which in combinatorial terms corresponds to the enumeration of weighted 4-valent planar maps equipped with an Eulerian orientation. This problem was exactly, albeit non-rigorously solved by Ivan Kostov in 2000 using matrix integral techniques. We convert Kostov's work to a combinatorial argument involving functional equations coming from recursive decompositions of the maps, which we solve rigorously using complex analysis. We then investigate modular properties of the solution, which lead to simplifications in certain special cases. In part…
We compute the distance-dependent two-point function of vertex-bicolored planar maps, i.e., maps whose vertices are colored in black and white so that no adjacent vertices have the same color. By distance-dependent two-point function, we mean the generating function of these maps with both a marked oriented edge and a marked vertex which are at a prescribed distance from each other. As customary, the maps are enumerated with arbitrary degree-dependent face weights, but the novelty here is that we also introduce color-dependent vertex weights. Explicit expressions are given for vertex-bicolored…
We study the vertices of the polytopes of all affine maps (a.k.a. hom-polytopes) between higher dimensional simplices, cubes, and crosspolytopes. Systematic study of general hom-polytopes was initiated in [3]. The study of such vertices is the classical aspect of a conjectural homological theory of convex polytopes. One quickly runs into open problems even for simple source and target polytopes. The vertices of Hom(simplex_m,-) and Hom(-,cube_n) are easily understood. In this work we describe the vertex sets of Hom(box_m,simplex_n), Hom(diamond_m,simplex_n), and Hom(diamond_m,diamond_n). The e…
In this paper we consider a fundamental problem in the area of viral marketing, called T{\scriptsize ARGET} S{\scriptsize ET} S{\scriptsize ELECTION} problem. In a a viral marketing setting, social networks are modeled by graphs with potential customers of a new product as vertices and friend relationships as edges, where each vertex $v$ is assigned a threshold value $θ(v)$. The thresholds represent the different latent tendencies of customers (vertices) to buy the new product when their friend (neighbors) do. Consider a repetitive process on social network $(G,θ)$ where each vertex $v$ is ass…
