We look at several saturation problems in complete balanced blow-ups of graphs. We let $H[n]$ denote the blow-up of $H$ onto parts of size $n$ and refer to a copy of $H$ in $H[n]$ as 'partite' if it has one vertex in each part of $H[n]$. We then ask how few edges a subgraph $G$ of $H[n]$ can have such that $G$ has no partite copy of $H$ but such that the addition of any new edge from $H[n]$ creates a partite $H$. When $H$ is a triangle this value was determined by Ferrara, Jacobson, Pfender, and Wenger. Our main result is to calculate this value for $H=K_4$ when $n$ is large. We also give exact results for paths and stars and show that for $2$-connected graphs the answer is linear in $n$ whilst for graphs which are not $2$-connected the answer is quadratic in $n$. We also investigate a similar problem where $G$ is permitted to contain partite copies of $H$ but we require that the addition of any new edge from $H[n]$ creates an extra partite copy of $H$. This problem turns out to be much simpler and we attain exact answers for all cliques and trees.
We prove that if the spectral radius of a graph G of order n is larger than the spectral radius of the r-partite Turan graph of the same order, then G contains various supergraphs of the complete graph of order r+1. In particular G contains a complete r-partite graph of size log n with one edge added to the first part. These results complete a project of Erdos from 1963. We also give corresponding stability results.
We study the problem of determining $sat(n,k,r)$, the minimum number of edges in a $k$-partite graph $G$ with $n$ vertices in each part such that $G$ is $K_r$-free but the addition of an edge joining any two non-adjacent vertices from different parts creates a $K_r$. Improving recent results of Ferrara, Jacobson, Pfender and Wenger, and generalizing a recent result of Roberts, we define a function $α(k,r)$ such that $sat(n,k,r) = α(k,r)n + o(n)$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. Moreover, we prove that \[ k(2r-4) \le α(k,r) \le \begin{cases} (k-1)(4r-k-6) &\text{ for }r \le k \le 2r-3, \\(k-1)(2r-3) …
Let $G$ be a fixed graph and let ${\mathcal F}$ be a family of graphs. A subgraph $J$ of $G$ is ${\mathcal F}$-saturated if no member of ${\mathcal F}$ is a subgraph of $J$, but for any edge $e$ in $E(G)-E(J)$, some element of ${\mathcal F}$ is a subgraph of $J+e$. We let $\text{ex}({\mathcal F},G)$ and $\text{sat}({\mathcal F},G)$ denote the maximum and minimum size of an ${\mathcal F}$-saturated subgraph of $G$, respectively. If no element of ${\mathcal F}$ is a subgraph of $G$, then $\text{sat}({\mathcal F},G) = \text{ex}({\mathcal F}, G) = |E(G)|$. In this paper, for $k\ge 3$ and $n\ge 100…
A graph $G$ is called $F$-saturated if $G$ does not contain $F$ as a subgraph (not necessarily induced) but the addition of any missing edge to $G$ creates a copy of $F$. The saturation number of $F$, denoted by $sat(n,F)$, is the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $F$-saturated graph. Determining the saturation number of complete partite graphs is one of the most important problems in the study of saturation number. The value of $sat(n,K_{2,2})$ was shown to be $\lfloor\frac{3n-5}{2}\rfloor$ by Ollmann, and a shorter proof was later given by Tuza. For $K_{2,3}$, there has been a series …
We provide an algorithm that verifies the optimal colored Tverberg problem for $10$ points in the plane: Every $10$ points in the plane in color classes of size at most $3$ can be partitioned in $4$ rainbow pieces such that their convex hulls intersect in a common point. This is achieved by translating the problem to $k$-partite graphs and using a new algorithm to verify that those graphs do not have a $k$-clique.
We give a minimum degree condition sufficent to ensure the existence of a fractional $K_r$-decomposition in a balanced $r$-partite graph (subject to some further simple necessary conditions). This generalises the non-partite problem studied recently by Barber, Lo, Kühn, Osthus and the author, and the $3$-partite fractional $K_3$-decomposition problem studied recently by Dukes. Combining our result with recent work by Barber, Kühn, Lo, Osthus and Taylor, this gives a minimum degree condition sufficient to ensure the existence of a (non-fractional) $K_r$-decomposition in a balanced $r$-partite g…
We construct a set of positive integers A in {1,..., n} with |A|>> n^{2/3} that does not contain Hilbert cubes of dimension 3. As a consequence we prove that ex(n; K^(3)(2,2,2))>> n^{8/3} where K^(3)(2,2,2) is the simplest complete 3-partite hypergraph. This is the first case of an improvement on the trivial lower bound for ex(n; L) when L is a complete r-partite hypergraph.
We compute a minimum degree threshold sufficient for 3-partite graphs to admit a fractional triangle decomposition. Together with recent work of Barber, Kühn, Lo, Osthus and Taylor, this leads to bounds for exact decompositions and in particular the completion problem for sparse partial latin squares. Some extensions are considered as well.
Let W_n(p,q) denote the minimum number of edges in an n x n bipartite graph G on vertex sets X,Y that satisfies the following condition; one can add the edges between X and Y that do not belong to G one after the other so that whenever a new edge is added, a new copy of K_{p,q} is created. The problem of bounding W_n(p,q), and its natural hypergraph generalization, was introduced by Balogh, Bollobás, Morris and Riordan. Their main result, specialized to graphs, used algebraic methods to determine W_n(1,q). Our main results in this paper give exact bounds for W_n(p,q), its hypergraph analogue, …
We consider a problem proposed by Linial and Wilf to determine the structure of graphs that allows the maximum number of $q$-colorings among graphs with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. Let $T_r(n)$ denote the Turán graph - the complete $r$-partite graph on $n$ vertices with partition sizes as equal as possible. We prove that for all odd integers $q\geq 5$ and sufficiently large $n$, the Turán graph $T_2(n)$ has at least as many $q$-colorings as any other graph $G$ with the same number of vertices and edges as $T_2(n)$, with equality holding if and only if $G=T_2(n)$. Our proof builds on methods by…

Let $F$ be a graph, $k \geq 2$ be an integer, and write $\mathrm{ex}_{ χ\leq k } (n , F)$ for the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that is $k$-partite and has no subgraph isomorphic to $F$. The function $\mathrm{ex}_{ χ\leq 2} ( n , F)$ has been studied by many researchers. Finding $\mathrm{ex}_{ χ\leq 2} (n , K_{s,t})$ is a special case of the Zarankiewicz problem. We prove an analogue of the Kövári-Sós-Turán Theorem for 3-partite graphs by showing \[ \mathrm{ex}_{ χ\leq 3} (n , K_{s,t} ) \leq \left( \frac{1}{3} \right)^{1 - 1/s} \left( \frac{ t - 1}{2} + o(1) \right)^{1/s} n^{2…
The trace norm $\left\Vert G\right\Vert _{\ast}$ of a graph $G$ is the sum of its singular values, i.e., the absolute values of its eigenvalues. The norm $\left\Vert G\right\Vert _{\ast}$ has been intensively studied under the name of graph energy, a concept introduced by Gutman in 1978. This note studies the maximum trace norm of $r$-partite graphs, which raises some unusual problems for $r>2$. It is shown that, if $G$ is an $r$-partite graph of order $n,$ then \[ \left\Vert G\right\Vert _{\ast}<\frac{n^{3/2}}{2}\sqrt{1-1/r}+\left( 1-1/r\right) n. \] For some special $r$ this bound is tight: …
Let $G$ and $H$ be $k$-graphs ($k$-uniform hypergraphs); then a perfect $H$-packing in $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ in $G$ which together cover every vertex of $G$. For any fixed $H$ let $δ(H, n)$ be the minimum $δ$ such that any $k$-graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree $δ(G) \geq δ$ contains a perfect $H$-packing. The problem of determining $δ(H, n)$ has been widely studied for graphs (i.e. $2$-graphs), but little is known for $k \geq 3$. Here we determine the asymptotic value of $δ(H, n)$ for all complete $k$-partite $k$-graphs $H$, as well as a wide class …
A well-known special case of a conjecture attributed to Ryser states that k-partite intersecting hypergraphs have transversals of at most k-1 vertices. An equivalent form was formulated by Gyárfás: if the edges of a complete graph K are colored with k colors then the vertex set of K can be covered by at most k-1 sets, each connected in some color. It turned out that the analogue of the conjecture for hypergraphs can be answered: Z. Király proved that in every k-coloring of the edges of the r-uniform complete hypergraph K^r (r >= 3), the vertex set of K^r can be covered by at most $\lceil k/r \…
For two $s$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ and $F$, the Turán number $ex_s(H,F)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free subgraph of $H$. Let $s, r, k, n_1, \ldots, n_r$ be integers satisfying $2\leq s\leq r$ and $n_1\leq n_2\leq \cdots\leq n_r$. De Silva, Heysse and Young determined $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r}, kK_2)$ and De Silva, Heysse, Kapilow, Schenfisch and Young determined $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r},kK_r)$. In this paper, as a generalization of these results, we consider three Turán-type problems for $k$ disjoint cliques in $r$-partite $s$-uniform hypergraphs. First, we consider a multi-…
A graph $G=(V,E)$ is called 1-planar if it admits a drawing in the plane such that each edge is crossed at most once. In this paper, we study bipartite $1$-planar graphs with prescribed numbers of vertices in partite sets. Bipartite 1-planar graphs are known to have at most $3n-8$ edges, where $n$ denotes the order of a graph. We show that maximal-size bipartite $1$-planar graphs which are almost balanced have not significantly fewer edges than indicated by this upper bound, while the same is not true for unbalanced ones. We prove that maximal possible sizes of bipartite $1$-planar graphs whos…
Let $G$ be a graph and $t$ a nonnegative integer. Suppose $f$ is a mapping from the vertex set of $G$ to $\{1,2,\dots, k\}$. If, for any vertex $u$ of $G$, the number of neighbors $v$ of $u$ with $f(v)=f(u)$ is less than or equal to $t$, then $f$ is called a $t$-relaxed $k$-coloring of $G$. And $G$ is said to be $(k,t)$-colorable. The $t$-relaxed chromatic number of $G$, denote by $χ_t(G)$, is defined as the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ is $(k,t)$-colorable. A set $S$ of vertices in $G$ is $t$-sparse if $S$ induces a graph with a maximum degree of at most $t$. Thus $G$ is $(k,t)$-colorabl…
A zero-one matrix $M$ contains a zero-one matrix $A$ if one can delete some rows and columns of $M$, and turn some 1-entries into 0-entries such that the resulting matrix is $A$. The extremal number of $A$, denoted by $ex(n,A)$, is the maximum number of $1$-entries in an $n\times n$ sized matrix $M$ that does not contain $A$. A matrix $A$ is column-$t$-partite (or row-$t$-partite), if it can be cut along the columns (or rows) into $t$ submatrices such that every row (or column) of these submatrices contains at most one $1$-entry. We prove that if $A$ is column-$t$-partite, then $ex(n,A)<n^{2-\…
A convex geometric hypergraph (abbreviated cgh) consists of a collection of subsets of a strictly convex set of points in the plane. Extremal problems for cgh's have been extensively studied in the literature, and in this paper we consider their corresponding saturation problems. We asymptotically determine the saturation number of two geometrically disjoint $r$-tuples. Further, amongst the eight nonisomorphic $3$-uniform cgh's on two edges, we determine the saturation number for seven of these up to order of magnitude and the eighth up to a log factor.
An {\em ordered $r$-graph} is an $r$-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered. Given $2\leq k\leq r$, an ordered $r$-graph $H$ is {\em interval} $k$-{\em partite} if there exist at least $k$ disjoint intervals in the ordering such that every edge of $H$ has nonempty intersection with each of the intervals and is contained in their union. Our main result implies that for each $α> k - 1$ and $d>0$, every $n$-vertex ordered $r$-graph with $d \,n^α$ edges has for some $m\leq n$ an $m$-vertex interval $k$-partite subgraph with $Ω(d\, m^α)$ edges. This is an extension to ordered $r$-g…
Given a coloring of the edges of a multi-hypergraph, a rainbow t-matching is a collection of t disjoint edges, each having a different color. In this note we study the problem of finding a rainbow $t$-matching in an r-partite r-uniform multi-hypergraph whose edges are colored with f colors such that every color class is a matching of size t. This problem was posed by Aharoni and Berger, who asked to determine the minimum number of colors which guarantees a rainbow matching. We improve on the known upper bounds for this problem for all values of the parameters. In particular for every fixed r, …
Recently, the saturation problem of $0$-$1$ matrices gained a lot of attention. This problem can be regarded as a saturation problem of ordered bipartite graphs. Motivated by this, we initiate the study of the saturation problem of ordered and cyclically ordered graphs. We prove that dichotomy holds also in these two cases, i.e., for a (cyclically) ordered graph its saturation function is either bounded or linear. We also determine the order of magnitude for large classes of (cyclically) ordered graphs, giving infinite many examples exhibiting both possible behaviours, answering a problem of P…
The $(a,b)$-eye is the graph $I_{a,b} = K_{a+b}-K_b$ obtained by deleting the edges of a clique of size $b$ from a clique of size $a+b$. We show that for any $a,b \ge 2$ and $p \in (0,1)$, if we condition the random graph $G \sim G(n,p)$ on having no induced copy of $I_{a,b}$, then with high probability $G$ is close to an $a$-partite graph or the complement of a $(b-1)$-partite graph. Our proof uses the recently developed theory of hypergraph containers, and a stability result for an extremal problem with two weighted colours. We also apply the stability method to obtain an exact Turán-type re…
Our main result essentially reduces the problem of finding an edge-decomposition of a balanced r-partite graph of large minimum degree into r-cliques to the problem of finding a fractional r-clique decomposition or an approximate one. Together with very recent results of Bowditch and Dukes as well as Montgomery on fractional decompositions into triangles and cliques respectively, this gives the best known bounds on the minimum degree which ensures an edge-decomposition of an r-partite graph into r-cliques (subject to trivially necessary divisibility conditions). The case of triangles translate…
In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon introduced a saturation version of Turán's classical theorem in extremal graph theory. In particular, they determined the minimum number of edges in a $K_r$-free, $n$-vertex graph with the property that the addition of any further edge yields a copy of $K_r$. We consider analogues of this problem in other settings. We prove a saturation version of the Erdős-Szekeres theorem about monotone subsequences and saturation versions of some Ramsey-type theorems on graphs and Dilworth-type theorems on posets. We also consider semisaturation problems, wherein we allow the…
We study the problem of computing the minimum vertex cover on k-uniform k-partite hypergraphs when the k-partition is given. On bipartite graphs (k = 2), the minimum vertex cover can be computed in polynomial time. For general k, the problem was studied by Lovász, who gave a k/2 -approximation based on the standard LP relaxation. Subsequent work by Aharoni, Holzman and Krivelevich showed a tight integrality gap of (k/2 - o(1)) for the LP relaxation. While this problem was known to be NP-hard for k >= 3, the first non-trivial NP-hardness of approximation factor of k/4- \eps was shown in a recen…
In 1975 Bollobás, Erd\H os, and Szemerédi asked the following question: given positive integers $n, t, r$ with $2\le t\le r-1$, what is the largest minimum degree $δ(G)$ among all $r$-partite graphs $G$ with parts of size $n$ and which do not contain a copy of $K_{t+1}$? The $r=t+1$ case has attracted a lot of attention and was fully resolved by Haxell and Szabó, and Szabó and Tardos in 2006. In this paper we investigate the $r>t+1$ case of the problem, which has remained dormant for over forty years. We resolve the problem exactly in the case when $r \equiv -1 \pmod{t}$, and up to an additive…
The generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. We consider the case where $χ(H)<χ(F)$. There are several exact results on $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ when the extremal graph is a complete $(χ(F)-1)$-partite graph. We obtain multiple exact results with other kinds of extremal graphs.
We report about some results, interesting examples, problems and conjectures revolving around the parabolic Kostant partition functions, the parabolic Kostka polynomials and ``saturation'' properties of several generalizations of the Littlewood--Richardson numbers.

Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a family of edge-colored graphs. A $t$-edge colored graph $G$ is $(\mathcal{C}, t)$-saturated if $G$ does not contain any graph in $\mathcal{C}$ but the addition of any edge in any color in $[t]$ creates a copy of some graph in $\mathcal{C}$. Similarly to classical saturation functions, define $\mathrm{sat}_t(n, \mathcal{C})$ to be the minimum number of edges in a $(\mathcal{C},t)$ saturated graph. Let $\mathcal{C}_r(H)$ be the family consisting of every edge-colored copy of $H$ which uses exactly $r$ colors. In this paper we consider a variety of colored saturation proble…
A graph $G$ is $F$-saturated if it does not contain any copy of $F$, but the addition of any missing edge in $G$ creates at least one copy of $F$. Inspired by work of Alon and Shikhelman regarding a similar question for $F$-free graphs, Kritschgau, Methuku, Tait, and Timmons introduced the parameter of $\text{sat}_H(n,F)$ to denote the minimum number of copies of some subgraph $H$ in an $F$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we address this generalized saturation problem with special focus on $\text{sat}_{K_r}(n,S_t)$ and $\text{sat}_{S_r}(n,S_t)$ This relates to recent work by Ch…
Caro and Yuster (Electronic J.Comb 7 (2000)) studied a generalization of the Turan problem, where a certain function (instead of the size) of an F-free graph of order n has to be maximized. We prove that for a wide class of functions the asymptotics of the maximum is given by complete partite graphs.
We solve four similar problems: For every fixed $s$ and large $n$, we describe all values of $n_1,\ldots,n_s$ such that for every $2$-edge-coloring of the complete $s$-partite graph $K_{n_1,\ldots,n_s}$ there exists a monochromatic (i) cycle $C_{2n}$ with $2n$ vertices, (ii) cycle $C_{\geq 2n}$ with at least $2n$ vertices, (iii) path $P_{2n}$ with $2n$ vertices, and (iv) path $P_{2n+1}$ with $2n+1$ vertices. This implies a generalization for large $n$ of the conjecture by Gyárfás, Ruszinkó, Sárkőzy and Szemerédi that for every $2$-edge-coloring of the complete $3$-partite graph $K_{n,n,n}$ the…
For a graph $F$, we say that another graph $G$ is $F$-saturated, if $G$ is $F$-free and adding any edge to $G$ would create a copy of $F$. We study for a given graph $F$ and integer $n$ whether there exists a regular $n$-vertex $F$-saturated graph, and if it does, what is the smallest number of edges of such a graph. We mainly focus on the case when $F$ is a complete graph and prove for example that there exists a $K_3$-saturated regular graph on $n$ vertices for every large enough $n$. We also study two relaxed versions of the problem: when we only require that no regular $F$-free supergraph …
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of graphs. A graph $G$ is $\mathcal{F}$-saturated if $G$ contains no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph but $G+e$ contains some member of $\mathcal{F}$ whenever $e\in E(\overline{G})$. The saturation number and extremal number of $\mathcal{F}$, denoted $sat(n,\mathcal{F})$ and $ex(n,\mathcal{F})$ respectively, are the minimum and maximum numbers of edges among $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}$-saturated graphs. For $k\in\mathbb{N}$, let $\mathcal{F}_k$ and $\mathcal{F}'_k$ be the families of $k$-connected and $k$-edge-connected graphs, respectively. Wenger proved $sat(n…
Saturation problems for forbidden graphs have been a popular area of research for many decades, and recently Brualdi and Cao initiated the study of a saturation problem for 0-1 matrices. We say that 0-1 matrix $A$ is saturating for the forbidden 0-1 matrix $P$ if $A$ avoids $P$ but changing any zero to a one in $A$ creates a copy of $P$. Define $sat(n, P)$ to be the minimum possible number of ones in an $n \times n$ 0-1 matrix that is saturating for $P$. Fulek and Keszegh proved that for every 0-1 matrix $P$, either $sat(n, P) = O(1)$ or $sat(n, P) = Θ(n)$. They found two 0-1 matrices $P$ for …
