Consider a real--analytic nearly--integrable mechanical system with potential $f$, namely, a Hamiltonian system, having a real-analytic Hamiltonian $$ H(y,x)=\frac12 | y |^2 +\e f(x)\ , $$
$y,x$ being $n$--dimensional standard action--angle variables (and $|\cdot|$ the Euclidean norm). Then, for "general" potentials $f$'s and $\e$ small enough, the Liouville measure of the complementary of invariant tori is smaller than $\e|\ln \e|^a$ (for a suitable $a>0$).
We obtain a global version of the Hamiltonian KAM theorem for invariant Lagrangean tori by glueing together local KAM conjugacies with help of a partition of unity. In this way we find a global Whitney smooth conjugacy between a nearly-integrable system and an integrable one. This leads to preservation of geometry, which allows us to define all the nontrivial geometric invariants like monodromy or Chern classes of an integrable system also for near integrable systems.
Consider a sufficiently smooth nearly integrable Hamiltonian system of two and a half degrees of freedom in action-angle coordinates \[ H_ε(φ,I,t)=H_0(I)+εH_1(φ,I,t), φ\in T^2,\ I\in U\subset R^2,\ t\in T=R/Z. \] Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser Theorem asserts that a set of nearly full measure in phase space consists of three dimensional invariant tori carrying quasiperiodic dynamics. In this paper we prove that for a class of nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems there is an orbit which contains these KAM tori in its $ω$-limit set. This implies that the closure of the orbit has almost full measure in…
In this paper we study families of Lagrangian tori that appear in a neighborhood of a resonance of a near-integrable Hamiltonian system. Such families disappear in the "integrable" limit $\varepsilon\to 0$. Dynamics on these tori is oscillatory in the direction of the resonance phases and rotating with respect to the other (non-resonant) phases. We also show that, if multiplicity of the resonance equals one, generically these tori occupy a set of large relative measure in the resonant domains in the sense that the relative measure of the remaining "chaotic" set is of order $\sqrt\varepsilon$. …
In this paper we are concerned with the existence of invariant tori in nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems \begin{equation*} H=h(y)+f(x,y,t), \end{equation*} where $y\in D\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$ with $D$ being a closed bounded domain, $x\in \mathbb{T}^n$, $f(x,y,t)$ is a real analytic almost periodic function in $t$ with the frequency ${ω}=(\cdots,{ω}_λ,\cdots)_{λ\in \mathbb{Z}}\in \mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{Z}}$. As an application, we will prove the existence of almost periodic solutions and the boundedness of all solutions for the second order differential equations with superquadratic potentials …
This paper demonstrates sufficient conditions for the existence of KAM tori in a singly thermostated, integrable hamiltonian system with $n$ degrees of freedom with a focus on the generalized, variable-mass thermostats of order 2--which include the Nosé thermostat, the logistic thermostat of Tapias, Bravetti and Sanders, and the Winkler thermostat. It extends Theorem 3.2 of Legoll, Luskin & Moeckel, (Non-ergodicity of Nosé-Hoover dynamics, Nonlinearity, 22 (2009), pp. 1673--1694) to prove that a "typical" singly thermostated, integrable, real-analytic hamiltonian possesses a positive-measure s…
Consider an integer $n \geq 2$ and real numbers $τ>n-1$ and $l>2(τ+1)$. Using ideas of Moser, Salamon proved that individual Diophantine tori persist for Hamiltonian systems which are of class $C^l$. Under the stronger assumption that the system is a $C^{l+τ}$ perturbation of an analytic integrable system, P{ö}schel proved the persistence of a set of positive measure of Diophantine tori. We improve the last result by showing it is sufficient for the perturbation to be of class $C^{l}$ and the integrable part to be of class $C^{l+2}$.
The celebrated KAM Theory says that if one makes a small perturbation of a non-degenerate completely integrable system, we still see a huge measure of invariant tori with quasi-periodic dynamics in the perturbed system. These invariant tori are known as KAM tori. What happens outside KAM tori draws a lot of attention. In this paper we present a Lagrangian perturbation of the geodesic flow on a flat 3-torus. The perturbation is $C^\infty$ small but the flow has a positive measure of trajectories with positive Lyapunov exponent, namely, the flow has positive metric entropy. From this result we g…
When a Gevrey smooth perturbation is applied to a quasi-convex integrable Hamiltonian, it is known that the KAM invariant tori that survive are sticky, that is, doubly exponentially stable. We show by examples the optimality of this effective stability.
For an integrable Tonelli Hamiltonian with $d\ (d\geq 2)$ degrees of freedom, we show that all of the Lagrangian tori can be destroyed by analytic perturbations which are arbitrarily small in the $C^{d-δ}$ topology.
Chow, Li and Yi in [2] proved that the majority of the unperturbed tori {\it on sub-manifolds} will persist for standard Hamiltonian systems. Motivated by their work, in this paper, we study the persistence and tangent frequencies preservation of lower dimensional invariant tori on smooth sub-manifolds for real analytic, nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems. The surviving tori might be elliptic, hyperbolic, or of mixed type.
In this paper the problem of persistence of invariant tori under small perturbations of integrable Hamiltonian systems is considered. The existence of one-to-one correspondence between hyperbolic invariant tori and critical points of the function $Ψ$ of two variables defined on semi-cylinder is established. It is proved that if unperturbed Hamiltonian has a saddle point, then under arbitrary perturbations there persists at least one hyperbolic torus.
What kinds of motion can occur in classical mechanics? We address this question by looking at the structures traced out by trajectories in phase space; the most orderely, completely integrable systems, are charactrized by phase trajectories confined to low-dimensional, invariant tori. The KAM theory examines what happens to the tori when an integrable system is subjected to a small perturbation and finds that, for small enough perturbations, most of them survive. The KAM theory is mute on the suject of the disrupted tori, but, for two dimensional systems, Aubry and Mather discovered an astonis…
From KAM Theory it follows that the measure of phase points which do not lie on Diophantine, Lagrangian, "primary" tori in a nearly--integrable, real--analytic Hamiltonian system is $O(\sqrt{\varepsilon})$, if $\varepsilon$ is the size of the perturbation. In this paper we discuss how the constant in front of $\sqrt{\varepsilon}$ depends on the unperturbed system and in particular on the phase--space domain.
In this paper we develop some new KAM-technique to prove two general KAM theorems for nearly integrable hamiltonian systems without assuming any non-degeneracy condition. Many of KAM-type results (including the classical KAM theorem) are special cases of our theorems under some non-degeneracy condition and some smoothness condition. Moreover, we can obtain some interesting results about KAM tori with prescribed frequencies.
In this note we present and briefly discuss results, which include as a particular case the theorem announced in [L. Biasco, and L. Chierchia. On the measure of Lagrangian invariant tori in nearly-integrable mechanical systems. Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei Rend. Lincei Mat. Appl. 26 (2015), 1-10], concerning the typical behaviour of nearly-integrable mechanical systems with generic analytic potentials.

A detailed description of topology of integrable billiard systems is given. For elliptical billiards and geodesic billiards on ellipsoid, the corresponding Fomenko graphs are constructed.
Bifibrations, in symplectic geometry called also dual pairs, play a relevant role in the theory of superintegrable Hamiltonian systems. We prove the existence of an analogous bifibrated geometry in dynamical systems with a symmetry group such that the reduced dynamics is periodic. The integrability of such systems has been proven by M. Field and J. Hermans with a reconstruction technique. We apply the result to the nonholonomic system of a ball rolling on a surface of revolution.
Quasi-periodic motions on invariant tori of an integrable system of dimension smaller than half the phase space dimension may continue to exists after small perturbations. The parametric equations of the invariant tori can often be computed as formal power series in the perturbation parameter and can be given a meaning via resummations. Here we prove that, for a class of elliptic tori, a resummation algorithm can be devised and proved to be convergent, thus extending to such lower-dimensional invariant tori the methods employed to prove convergence of the Lindstedt series either for the maxima…
We consider a nearly integrable, non-isochronous, a-priori unstable Hamiltonian system with a (trigonometric polynomial) $O(μ)$-perturbation which does not preserve the unperturbed tori. We prove the existence of Arnold diffusion with diffusion time $T_d = O((1/ μ) \log (1/ μ))$ by a variational method which does not require the existence of ``transition chains of tori'' provided by KAM theory. We also prove that our estimate of the diffusion time $T_d$ is optimal as a consequence of a general stability result proved via classical perturbation theory.
We prove the existence of real analytic Hamiltonians with topologically unstable quasi-periodic invariant tori. Using various versions of our examples, we solve the following problems in the stability theory of analytic quasi-periodic motion: $\quad i)$ Show the existence of topologically unstable tori of arbitrary frequency. Moreover, the Birkhoff Normal Form at the invariant torus can be chosen to be convergent, equal to a planar or non-planar polynomial. $\quad ii)$ Show the optimality of the exponential stability for Diophantine tori. ' $\quad iii)$ Show the existence of real analytic Hami…
In [3] (Rend. Lincei Mat. Appl. 26 (2015), 1-10; see also arXiv:1503.08145 [math.DS]) the following result has been announced: Theorem. Consider a real-analytic nearly-integrable mechanical system with potential $f$, namely, a Hamiltonian system with real-analytic Hamiltonian $$H(y,x)=\frac12 \sum_{i=1}^n y_i^2 +εf(x)\ ,$$ $(y,x)\in{\mathbb R}^n\times{\mathbb T}^n$ being standard action--angle variables. For "general non-degenerate" potentials $f$'s there exists $ε_0,a>0$ such that, if $0<ε<ε_0$, then the Liouville measure of the complementary of $H$-invariant tori is smaller than $ε|\log ε|^a…
In a previous work [Asymptotically quasiperiodic solutions for time-dependent Hamiltonians, arXiv preprint arXiv:2211.06623 (2022)], we consider time-dependent perturbations of a Hamiltonian vector field having an invariant torus supporting quasiperiodic solutions. Assuming the perturbation decays polynomially fast as time tends to infinity, we prove the existence of an asymptotic KAM torus. An asymptotic KAM torus is a time-dependent family of embedded tori converging as time tends to infinity to the invariant torus associated with the unperturbed system. Now, it is quite natural to wonder wh…
We characterize completely integrable Hamiltonian systems inducing an effective Hamiltonian torus action as systems with zero transport costs w.r.t. the time-$T$ map where $T \in {\mathbb R}^n$ is the period of the acting $n$-torus.
We prove a KAM-type result for the persistence of two-dimensional invariant tori in perturbations of integrable action-angle-angle maps with degeneracy, satisfying the intersection property. Such degenerate action-angle-angle maps arise upon generic perturbation of three-dimensional volume-preserving vector fields, which are invariant under volume-preserving action of $S^1$ when there is no motion in the group action direction for the unperturbed map. This situation is analogous to degeneracy in Hamiltonian systems. The degenerate nature of the map and the unequal number of action and angle va…
We study the splitting of invariant manifolds of whiskered tori with two frequencies in nearly-integrable Hamiltonian systems, such that the hyperbolic part is given by a pendulum. We consider a 2-dimensional torus with a fast frequency vector $ω/\sqrtε$, with $ω=(1,Ω)$ where $Ω$ is an irrational number of constant type, i.e. a number whose continued fraction has bounded entries. Applying the Poincaré-Melnikov method, we find exponentially small lower bounds for the maximal splitting distance between the stable and unstable invariant manifolds associated to the invariant torus, and we show tha…

We consider Gevrey perturbations $H$ of a completely integrable Gevrey Hamiltonian $H_0$. Given a Cantor set $Ω_κ$ defined by a Diophantine condition, we find a family of KAM invariant tori of $H$ with frequencies $ω\in Ω_κ$ which is Gevrey smooth in a Whitney sense. Moreover, we obtain a symplectic Gevrey normal form of the Hamiltonian in a neighborhood of the union $Λ$ of the invariant tori. This leads to effective stability of the quasiperiodic motion near $Λ$.
Given a completely integrable system, we associate to any connection on its invariant tori fibred over a parameter manifold the classical and quantum holonomy operator (generalized Berry's phase factor), without any adiabatic approximation.
We consider a class of quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems obtained by adding to a non-convex Hamiltonian function of an integrable system a perturbation depending only on the angle variables. We focus on a resonant maximal torus of the unperturbed system, foliated into a family of lower-dimensional tori of codimension 1, invariant under a quasi-periodic flow with rotation vector satisfying some mild Diophantine condition. We show that at least one lower-dimensional torus with that rotation vector always exists also for the perturbed system. The proof is based on multiscale analysis and resum…
Motivated by the Lagrange top coupled to an oscillator, we consider the quasi-periodic Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation. To this end, we develop the normal linear stability theory of an invariant torus with a generic (i.e., non-semisimple) normal $1:-1$ resonance. This theory guarantees the persistence of the invariant torus in the Diophantine case and makes possible a further quasi-periodic normal form, necessary for investigation of the non-linear dynamics. As a consequence, we find Cantor families of invariant isotropic tori of all dimensions suggested by the integrable approximation.
Invariant tori play a fundamental role in the dynamics of symplectic and volume-preserving maps. Codimension-one tori are particularly important as they form barriers to transport. Such tori foliate the phase space of integrable, volume-preserving maps with one action and $d$ angles. For the area-preserving case, Greene's residue criterion is often used to predict the destruction of tori from the properties of nearby periodic orbits. Even though KAM theory applies to the three-dimensional case, the robustness of tori in such systems is still poorly understood. We study a three-dimensional, rev…
We give a proof of the convergence of an algorithm for the construction of lower dimensional elliptic tori in nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems. The existence of such invariant tori is proved by leading the Hamiltonian to a suitable normal form. In particular, we adapt the procedure described in a previous work by Giorgilli and co-workers, where the construction was made so as to be used in the context of the planetary problem. We extend the proof of the convergence to the cases in which the two sets of frequencies, describing the motion along the torus and the transverse oscillations, hav…
This article is a part of a project investigating the relationship between the dynamics of completely integrable or close to completely integrable billiard tables, the integral geometry on them, and the spectrum of the corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operators. It is concerned with new isospectral invariants and with the spectral rigidity problem for families of Laplace-Beltrami operators with Dirichlet, Neumann or Robin boundary conditions, associated with C^1 families of billiard tables. We introduce a notion of weak isospectrality for such deformations. The main dynamical assumption on the i…
We consider the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on the two-dimensional torus. The equation admits a special family of elliptic invariant quasiperiodic tori called finite-gap solutions. These are inherited from the integrable 1D model (cubic NLS on the circle) by considering solutions that depend only on one variable. We study the long-time stability of such invariant tori for the 2D NLS model and show that, under certain assumptions and over sufficiently long timescales, they exhibit a strong form of transverse instability in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T}^2)$ ($0<s<1$). …
For an integrable Hamiltonian with $d\ (d\geq 2)$ degrees of freedom, we show the conditions on perturbations, for which invariant tori can be destructed.
We consider the integrable (zero perturbation) two--dimensional standard map, in light of current developments on ergodic sums of irrational rotations, and recent numerical evidence that it might possess non-trivial q-Gaussian statistics. Using both classical and recent results, we show that the phase average of the sum of centered positions of an orbit, for long times and after normalization, obeys the Cauchy distribution (a q-Gaussian with q=2), while for almost all individual orbits such a sum does not obey any distribution at all. We discuss the question of existence of distributions for K…
We consider a class of a priori stable quasi-integrable analytic Hamiltonian systems and study the regularity of low-dimensional hyperbolic invariant tori as functions of the perturbation parameter. We show that, under natural nonresonance conditions, such tori exist and can be identified through the maxima or minima of a suitable potential. They are analytic inside a disc centered at the origin and deprived of a region around the positive or negative real axis with a quadratic cusp at the origin. The invariant tori admit an asymptotic series at the origin with Taylor coefficients that grow at…
In the present paper, we consider a smooth $C^\infty$ symplectic classification of Lagrangian fibrations near cusp singularities, parabolic orbits and cuspidal tori. We show that for these singularities as well as for an arrangement of singularities known as a flap, which arises in the integrable subcritical Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation, the action variables form a complete set of $C^\infty$ symplectic invariants. We also give a symplectic classification for parabolic orbits in the real-analytic case. Namely, we prove that a complete symplectic invariant in this case is given by a real-analyti…
