Given a completely integrable system, we associate to any connection on its invariant tori fibred over a parameter manifold the classical and quantum holonomy operator (generalized Berry's phase factor), without any adiabatic approximation.
An adiabatic change of parameters along a closed path may interchange the (quasi-)eigenenergies and eigenspaces of a closed quantum system. Such discrepancies induced by adiabatic cycles are refereed to as the exotic quantum holonomy, which is an extension of the geometric phase. "Small" adiabatic cycles induce no change on eigenspaces, whereas some "large" adiabatic cycles interchange eigenspaces. We explain the topological formulation for the eigenspace anholonomy, where the homotopy equivalence precisely distinguishes the larger cycles from smaller ones. An application to two level systems …
A topological formulation of the eigenspace anholonomy, where eigenspaces are interchanged by adiabatic cycles, is introduced. The anholonomy in two-level systems is identified with a disclination of the director (headless vector) of a Bloch vector, which characterizes eigenprojectors. The covering map structure behind the exotic quantum holonomy and the role of the homotopy classification of adiabatic cycles are elucidated. The extensions of this formulation to nonadiabatic cycles and N-level systems are outlined.
The correspondence between exotic quantum holonomy that occurs in families of Hermitian cycles, and exceptional points (EPs) for non-Hermitian quantum theory is examined in quantum kicked tops. Under a suitable condition, an explicit expressions of the adiabatic parameter dependencies of quasienergies and stationary states, which exhibit anholonomies, are obtained. It is also shown that the quantum kicked tops with the complexified adiabatic parameter have a higher order EP, which is broken into lower order EPs with the application of small perturbations. The stability of exotic holonomy again…
An interplay of an exotic quantum holonomy and exceptional points is examined in one-dimensional Bose systems. The eigenenergy anholonomy, in which Hermitian adiabatic cycle induces nontrivial change in eigenenergies, can be interpreted as a manifestation of eigenenergy's Riemann surface structure, where the branch points are identified as the exceptional points which are degeneracy points in the complexified parameter space. It is also shown that the exceptional points are the divergent points of the non-Abelian gauge connection for the gauge theoretical formulation of the eigenspace anholono…
An adiabatic time evolution of a closed quantum system connects eigenspaces of initial and final Hermitian Hamiltonians for slowly driven systems, or, unitary Floquet operators for slowly modulated driven systems. We show that the connection of eigenspaces depends on a topological property of the adiabatic paths for given initial and final points. An example in slowly modulated periodically driven systems is shown. These analysis are based on the topological analysis of the exotic quantum holonomy in adiabatic closed paths.
We study the evolution of quantum eigenstates in the presence of level crossing under adiabatic cyclic change of environmental parameters. We find that exotic holonomies, indicated by exchange of the eigenstates after a single cyclic evolution, can arise from non-Abelian gauge potentials among non-degenerate levels. We illustrate our arguments with solvable two and three level models.
Using shortcuts to adiabaticity, we solve the time-dependent Schroedinger equation that is reduced to a classical nonlinear integrable equation. For a given time-dependent Hamiltonian, the counterdiabatic term is introduced to prevent nonadiabatic transitions. Using the fact that the equation for the dynamical invariant is equivalent to the Lax equation in nonlinear integrable systems, we obtain the counterdiabatic term exactly. The counterdiabatic term is available when the corresponding Lax pair exists and the solvable systems are classified in a unified and systematic way. Multisoliton pote…
In this thesis we provide a uniform treatment of two non-adiabatic geometric phases for dynamical systems of mixed quantum states, namely those of Uhlmann and of Sjöqvist et al. We develop a holonomy theory for the latter which we also relate to the already existing theory for the former. This makes it clear what the similarities and differences between the two geometric phases are. We discuss and motivate constraints on the two phases. Furthermore, we discuss some topological properties of the holonomy of `real' quantum systems, and we introduce higher-order geometric phases for not necessari…
We present a formal geometric framework for the study of adiabatic quantum mechanics for arbitrary finite-dimensional non-degenerate Hamiltonians. This framework generalizes earlier holonomy interpretations of the geometric phase to non-cyclic states appearing for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We start with an investigation of the space of non-degenerate operators on a finite-dimensional state space. We then show how the energy bands of a Hamiltonian family form a covering space. Likewise, we show that the eigenrays form a bundle, a generalization of a principal bundle, which admits a natural co…
A new simple proof of the adiabatic theorem is given in the finite dimensional case for nondegenerate as well as degenerate states. The explicitly integrable two level system is considered as an example. It is demonstrated that the error estimate given by the adiabatic theorem can not be improved.

The path dependence of adiabatic evolution in classical harmonic chains with clamps is examined. It is shown that cutting and joining a chain may braid adiabatic normal mode frequencies. Accordingly, different adiabatic paths with the same endpoints may transport a normal mode to a different one, and an adiabatic cycle pumps action variables, i.e., the adiabatic invariants of integrable classical systems. Another adiabatic pump for artificial edge modes induced by clamps is shown as an application. Extensions to completely integrable systems and quantum systems are outlined.
Non-adiabatic holonomic quantum gate in decoherence-free subspaces is of greatly practical importance due to its built-in fault tolerance, coherence stabilization virtues, and short run-time. Here we propose some compact schemes to implement two- and three-qubit controlled unitary quantum gates and Fredkin gate. For the controlled unitary quantum gates, the unitary operator acting on the target qubit is an arbitrary single-qubit gate operation. The controlled quantum gates can be directly implemented using non-adiabatic holonomy in decoherence-free subspaces and the required resource for the d…
The second quantized approach to geometric phases is reviewed. The second quantization generally induces a hidden local (time-dependent) gauge symmetry. This gauge symmetry defines the parallel transport and holonomy, and thus it controls all the known geometric phases, either adiabatic or non-adiabatic, in a unified manner. The transitional region from the adiabatic to non-adiabatic phases is thus analyzed in a quantitative way. It is then shown that the topology of the adiabatic Berry's phase is trivial in a precise sense and also the adiabatic phase is rather fragile against the non-adiabat…
It is shown that adiabatic cycles excite a quantum particle, which is confined in a one-dimensional region and is initially in an eigenstate. During the cycle, an infinitely sharp wall is applied and varied its strength and position. After the completion of the cycle, the state of the particle arrives another eigenstate. It is also shown that we may vary the final adiabatic state by choosing the parameters of the cycle. With a combination of these adiabatic cycles, we can connect an arbitrary pair of eigenstates. Hence, these cycles may be regarded as basis of the adiabatic excitations. A deta…
As a qubit usually has a limited lifetime, its manipulation should be as fast as possible, and thus non-adiabatic operation is more preferable. Moreover, as a qubit inevitably interacts with its surrounding environment, robust operations are of great significance. Here, we propose a scheme for quantum manipulation of the polariton qubit in circuit QED using non-adiabatic holonomy, which is inherently fast and robust. In particularly, the polariton qubit is shown to be robust against arbitrary low-frequency noise due to its near symmetric spectrum, which can also be convenient manipulated by ex…
We construct a unified operator framework for quantum holonomies generated from bosonic systems. For a system whose Hamiltonian is bilinear in the creation and annihilation operators, we find a holonomy group determined only by a set of selected orthonormal modes obeying a stronger version of the adiabatic theorem. This photon-number independent description offers deeper insight as well as a computational advantage when compared to the standard formalism on geometric phases. In particular, a strong analogy between quantum holonomies and linear optical networks can be drawn. This relation provi…
Topology, geometry, and gauge fields play key roles in quantum physics as exemplified by fundamental phenomena such as the Aharonov-Bohm effect, the integer quantum Hall effect, the spin Hall, and topological insulators. The concept of topological protection has also become a salient ingredient in many schemes for quantum information processing and fault-tolerant quantum computation. The physical properties of such systems crucially depend on the symmetry group of the underlying holonomy. We study here a laser-cooled gas of strontium atoms coupled to laser fields through a 4-level resonant tri…
We implement and characterize a numerical algorithm inspired by the $s$-source framework [Phys. Rev.~B 93, 045127 (2016)] for building a quantum many-body ground state wavefunction on a lattice of size $2L$ by applying adiabatic evolution to the corresponding ground state at size $L$, along with $L$ interleaved ancillae. The procedure can in principle be iterated to repeatedly double the size of the system. We implement the algorithm for several one dimensional spin model Hamiltonians, and find that the construction works particularly well when the gap is large and, interestingly, at scale inv…
The choice of the electronic representation in on-the-fly quantum dynamics is crucial. The adiabatic representation is appealing since adiabatic states are readily available from quantum chemistry packages. The nuclear wavepackets are then expanded in a basis of Gaussian functions, which follow trajectories to explore the potential energy surfaces and approximate the potential using a local expansion of the adiabatic quantities. Nevertheless, the adiabatic representation is plagued with severe limitations when conical intersections are involved: the diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections (DBOCs…
Adiabatic invariants are introduced and shown to provide an approximate second integral of motion for the non-integrable Dicke model, in the energy region where the system exhibits a regular dynamics. This low-energy region is always present and has been described both in a semiclassical and a full quantum analysis. Its Peres lattices exhibit that many observables vary smoothly with energy, along lines which beg for a formal description. It is shown how the adiabatic invariants provide a rationale to their presence in many cases. They are built employing the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, val…
In the past decades, it was recognized that quantum chaos, which is essential for the emergence of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, manifests itself in the effective description of the eigenstates of chaotic Hamiltonians through random matrix ensembles and the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Standard measures of chaos in quantum many-body systems are level statistics and the spectral form factor. In this work, we show that the norm of the adiabatic gauge potential, the generator of adiabatic deformations between eigenstates, serves as a much more sensitive measure of quantum cha…
Since its introduction by Hastings in [10], the technique of quasi-adiabatic continuation has become a central tool in the discussion and classification of ground state phases. It connects the ground states of self-adjoint Hamiltonians in the same phase by a unitary quasi-local transformation. This paper takes a step towards extending this result to non- self adjoint perturbations, though, for technical reason, we restrict ourselves here to weak perturbations of non-interacting spins. The extension to non-self adjoint perturbation is important for potential applications to Glauber dynamics (an…
We study adiabatic quantum quenches across a quantum multicritical point (MCP) using a quenching scheme that enables the system to hit the MCP along different paths. We show that the power-law scaling of the defect density with the rate of driving depends non-trivially on the path, i.e., the exponent varies continuously with the parameter $α$ that defines the path, up to a critical value $α= α_c$; on the other hand for $α\geq α_c$, the scaling exponent saturates to a constant value. We show that dynamically generated and {\it path($α$)-dependent} effective critical exponents associated with th…
Driving a quantum system across quantum critical points leads to non-adiabatic excitations in the system. This in turn may adversely affect the functioning of a quantum machine which uses a quantum critical substance as its working medium. Here we propose a bath-engineered quantum engine (BEQE), in which we use the Kibble--Zurek mechanism and critical scaling laws to formulate a protocol for enhancing the performance of finite-time quantum engines operating close to quantum phase transitions. In the case of free fermionic systems, BEQE enables finite-time engines to outperform engines operatin…
