We study the evolution of quantum eigenstates in the presence of level crossing under adiabatic cyclic change of environmental parameters. We find that exotic holonomies, indicated by exchange of the eigenstates after a single cyclic evolution, can arise from non-Abelian gauge potentials among non-degenerate levels. We illustrate our arguments with solvable two and three level models.
An adiabatic change of a bound state along a closed circuit in the parameter space can induces holonomies not only in the phase of the state, but also in the associated eigenspace and eigenvalue. The former is the well-known Berry phase while the latter, namely the exotic holonomy, is found a decade ago and its origin has not been understood yet. By extending the parameter into the complex number, the correspondence of the exotic holonomies and the degeneracy of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, or the exceptional points, is revealed. We show that this explains all the known non-trivial character…
The correspondence between exotic quantum holonomy that occurs in families of Hermitian cycles, and exceptional points (EPs) for non-Hermitian quantum theory is examined in quantum kicked tops. Under a suitable condition, an explicit expressions of the adiabatic parameter dependencies of quasienergies and stationary states, which exhibit anholonomies, are obtained. It is also shown that the quantum kicked tops with the complexified adiabatic parameter have a higher order EP, which is broken into lower order EPs with the application of small perturbations. The stability of exotic holonomy again…
An interplay of an exotic quantum holonomy and exceptional points is examined in one-dimensional Bose systems. The eigenenergy anholonomy, in which Hermitian adiabatic cycle induces nontrivial change in eigenenergies, can be interpreted as a manifestation of eigenenergy's Riemann surface structure, where the branch points are identified as the exceptional points which are degeneracy points in the complexified parameter space. It is also shown that the exceptional points are the divergent points of the non-Abelian gauge connection for the gauge theoretical formulation of the eigenspace anholono…
A topological formulation of the eigenspace anholonomy, where eigenspaces are interchanged by adiabatic cycles, is introduced. The anholonomy in two-level systems is identified with a disclination of the director (headless vector) of a Bloch vector, which characterizes eigenprojectors. The covering map structure behind the exotic quantum holonomy and the role of the homotopy classification of adiabatic cycles are elucidated. The extensions of this formulation to nonadiabatic cycles and N-level systems are outlined.
An adiabatic change of parameters along a closed path may interchange the (quasi-)eigenenergies and eigenspaces of a closed quantum system. Such discrepancies induced by adiabatic cycles are refereed to as the exotic quantum holonomy, which is an extension of the geometric phase. "Small" adiabatic cycles induce no change on eigenspaces, whereas some "large" adiabatic cycles interchange eigenspaces. We explain the topological formulation for the eigenspace anholonomy, where the homotopy equivalence precisely distinguishes the larger cycles from smaller ones. An application to two level systems …
Differential geometric structures such as the principal bundle for the canonical vector bundle on a complex Grassmann manifold, the canonical connection form on this bundle, the canonical symplectic form on a complex Grassmann manifold and the corresponding dynamical systems are investigated. The Grassmann manifold is considered as an orbit of the co-adjoint action and the symplectic form is described as the restriction of the canonical Poisson structure on a Lie coalgebra. The holonomy of the connection on the principal bundle over Grassmannian and its relation with Berry phase is considered …
A periodic change of slow environmental parameters of a quantum system induces quantum holonomy. The phase holonomy is a well-known example. Another is a more exotic kind that exhibits eigenvalue and eigenspace holonomies. We introduce a theoretical formulation that describes the phase and eigenspace holonomies on an equal footing. The building block of the theory is a gauge connection for an ordered basis, which is conceptually distinct from Mead-Truhlar-Berry's connection and its Wilczek-Zee extension. A gauge invariant treatment of eigenspace holonomy based on Fujikawa's formalism is develo…
We examine a parametric cycle in the N-body Lieb-Liniger model that starts from the free system and goes through Tonks-Girardeau and super-Tonks-Girardeau regimes and comes back to the free system. We show the existence of exotic quantum holonomy, whose detailed workings are analysed with the specific sample of two- and three body systems. The classification of eigenstates based on clustering structure naturally emerges from the analysis.
Completely integrable Hamiltonian systems look promising for controllability since their first integrals are stable under an internal evolution, and one may hope to find a perturbation of a Hamiltonian which drives the first integrals at will. Action-angle coordinates are most convenient for this purpose. Written with respect to these coordinates, a Hamiltonian and first integrals depend only on the action ones. We introduce a suitable perturbation of a Hamiltonian by a term containing time-dependent parameters so that an evolution of action variables is nothing else than a displacement along …
For an arbitrary possibly non-Hermitian matrix Hamiltonian H, that might involve exceptional points, we construct an appropriate parameter space M and the lines bundle L^n over M such that the adiabatic geometric phases associated with the eigenstates of the initial Hamiltonian coincide with the holonomies of L^n. We examine the case of 2 x 2 matrix Hamiltonians in detail and show that, contrary to claims made in some recent publications, geometric phases arising from encircling exceptional points are generally geometrical and not topological in nature.
Non-Abelian holonomy in dynamical systems may arise in adiabatic transport of energetically degenerate sets of states. We examine such a holonomy structure for mixtures of energetically degenerate quantal states. We demonstrate that this structure has a natural interpretation in terms of the standard Wilczek-Zee holonomy associated with a certain class of Hamiltonians that couple the system to an ancilla. The mixed state holonomy is analysed for holonomic quantum computation using ion traps.
We provide the first solution of a time-dependent metric operator for the non-Hermitian Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian. We use this solution to calculate the entanglement between two identical isolated such Hamiltonians. The presence of a non-Hermitian interaction term leads to a spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime which manifests itself in the exotic time-evolution of entanglement. When the symmetry is broken, oscillatory modes transition into decay. As such that there is a drastic difference in behaviour between the broken and unbroken regimes.
We present a formal geometric framework for the study of adiabatic quantum mechanics for arbitrary finite-dimensional non-degenerate Hamiltonians. This framework generalizes earlier holonomy interpretations of the geometric phase to non-cyclic states appearing for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We start with an investigation of the space of non-degenerate operators on a finite-dimensional state space. We then show how the energy bands of a Hamiltonian family form a covering space. Likewise, we show that the eigenrays form a bundle, a generalization of a principal bundle, which admits a natural co…
Photon-mediated interactions between quantum emitters in engineered photonic baths is an emerging area of quantum optics. At the same time, non-Hermitian (NH) physics is currently thriving, spurred by the exciting possibility to access new physics in systems ruled by non-trivial NH Hamiltonians - in particular photonic lattices - which can challenge longstanding tenets such as the Bloch theory of bands. Here, we combine these two fields and study the exotic interaction between emitters mediated by the photonic modes of a lossy photonic lattice described by a NH Hamiltonian. We show in a paradi…
We present a route towards the quantum simulation of exotic quantum magnetism in ion traps by exploiting dual relations between different spin models. Our strategy allows one to start from Hamiltonians that can be realized with current technology, while properties of an exotic dual model are inferred from measurements of non-local, string-order-like, operators. The latter can be achieved from fluorescence, or from certain spectroscopic measurements, both of which can be combined with finite-size scaling by controlling the number of ions in the dual quantum simulator. We apply this concept to p…
An adiabatic time evolution of a closed quantum system connects eigenspaces of initial and final Hermitian Hamiltonians for slowly driven systems, or, unitary Floquet operators for slowly modulated driven systems. We show that the connection of eigenspaces depends on a topological property of the adiabatic paths for given initial and final points. An example in slowly modulated periodically driven systems is shown. These analysis are based on the topological analysis of the exotic quantum holonomy in adiabatic closed paths.
Dynamical phase transition in quantum many body systems is usually studied by taking it in the ground state and then quenching a parameter to a new value. We investigate here the dynamics when one performs the time evolution of a generic state and observe that the rate function related to the Loschmidt echo shows non-analytic behavior of two types, one related, and the other unrelated, to the appearance of a quantum phase transition. Specifically, we consider a quantum Ising chain in an initial configuration which is a generic superposition of the eigenstates, and follow its dynamics under the…
A noncommutative extension of an ideal (Hamiltonian) fluid model in $3+1$-dimensions is proposed. The model enjoys several interesting features: it allows a multi-parameter central extension in Galilean boost algebra (which is significant being contrary to existing belief that similar feature can appear only in $2+1$-dim.); noncommutativity generates vorticity in a canonically irrotational fluid; it induces a non-barotropic pressure leading to a non-isentropic system. (Barotropic fluids are entropy preserving as pressure depends only on matter density.) Our fluid model is termed "Exotic" since…
It is shown that adiabatic cycles excite a quantum particle, which is confined in a one-dimensional region and is initially in an eigenstate. During the cycle, an infinitely sharp wall is applied and varied its strength and position. After the completion of the cycle, the state of the particle arrives another eigenstate. It is also shown that we may vary the final adiabatic state by choosing the parameters of the cycle. With a combination of these adiabatic cycles, we can connect an arbitrary pair of eigenstates. Hence, these cycles may be regarded as basis of the adiabatic excitations. A deta…
Time-dependent unitary transformations are used to study the Schreodinger equation for explicitly time-dependent Hamiltonians of the form $H(t)=\vec R(t).\vec J$, where $\vec R$ is an arbitrary real vector-valued function of time and $\vec J$ is the angular momentum operator. The solution of the Schreodinger equation for the most general Hamiltonian of this form is shown to be equivalent to the special case $\vec R=(1,0,ν(t))$. This corresponds to the problem of driven two-level atom for the spin half representation of $\vec J$. It is also shown that by requiring the magnitude of $\vec R$ to d…
